Program Notes When I was asked to write a piece for the opening of the Forbes Center at James Madison University, I knew I wanted it to be a spectacular work. Halfway though my writing process, the words “shock and awe” came into my head. The term “shock and awe” originated in a 1996 military doctrine written by Harlan K. Ullman and James P. Wade. The basis of this idea was to use overwhelming power, dominant battlefield maneuvers, and spectacular displays of force to paralyze an enemy and destroy their will to fight. This militaristic term is the inspiration for the piece.
Performance Notes •
There is a sound that occurs in measure 19 of the Percussion 1 part that is very unique. It requires the player to place the base of a Roto tom upside down on top of a suspended cymbal stand and then spin the base. The player then takes a triangle beater and presses it gently onto the spinning base to create a series of quick metallic ringing notes. If a Rototom base is not available, any loud ringing piece of metal, struck with triangle beaters in a fast to slow rubato style, will suffice.

Staccato marks that appear throughout the score typically mean to muffle or choke the sound of any instrument after it is struck (i.e., cymbals and tam tams). When it appears over a note played on bass drum, the bass drum is to be dampened with a towel or the player’s arm.

The opening measure is meant to be startling–a “shock.” An effective performance technique is to have the ensemble already in place on stage with the lights out. When the conductor cues the first note, the lights then come on. The first two measures should last about 10 to 15 seconds.

A small djembe or conga may be substituted if a doumbek is not available.
•
Percussion 3 and 4 should be placed on opposite sides of the ensemble so as to create an antiphonal effect.
Players and Instrumentation Shock and Awe requires 13 players with the following instrumentation: 1 glockenspiel, 1 chimes, 1 xylophone, 2 vibraphones, 2 medium marimbas (4.3-octave, low A), 1 large marimba (5-octave, low C), 5 timpani, auxiliary percussion (shekere, doumbek, large tam tam, hi-hat, concert bass drum, ocean drum, finger cymbals, medium low tom, brake drum [or anvil], 3 woodblocks [low, medium, high], crash cymbals, tambourine, 2 triangles [high, low], bell tree, 3 Zil-bells [at least 2 pitch variations], 3 sets of wind chimes, 4 suspended cymbals, 2 splash cymbals, 2 sizzle cymbals, and china cymbal)
