PROGRAM NOTES

This joyful marimba solo is based on a traditional Macedonian dance rhythm which alternates between 9/8 (2+2+2+3) and 7/8 (2+2+3). The entire pattern adds up to 16 eighth notes, which allows for fun polyrhythmic and cross-rhythm possibilities. Leventikos was originally the final movement of a sonata for solo marimba and was premiered by Paul Millette in 2018.
