PROGRAM & PERFORMANCE NOTES

Originally a poem by English poet Christina Rosetti published in 1872, In the Bleak Midwinter was later set to music both as a hymn by Gustav Holst and as an anthem by Harold Darke. Its lyrical nature and overall simplicity make it an attractive vehicle for young percussionists and their audience.

The vibraphone is the lead voice and should carry the melody at all times, particularly when not being doubled by the glockenspiel. The shared marimba supplies bass and harmony while the drumset and timpani provide a soothing rhythm bed in support of the melodic instruments. If the ensemble’s approach remains steady, calm, and balanced, In the Bleak Midwinter will likely deliver a soothing and reflective moment in time.
