Notes I arranged Mood for a Day as a young percussionist in 1982. It was my first attempt at arranging a four-mallet marimba piece, as I had only been playing the instrument for about a year or so. Being a huge fan of the progressive rock band Yes, I had listened to guitarist Steve Howe play it many times on the album Fragile. I decided to play it for a few of my college auditions, and it was very well received even though I am pretty sure my audition panels had probably never heard of Yes.

Mood for a Day has a distinctive flamenco sound and feel and, like most guitar music, it translates very well to the marimba. It is obvious that several parts of the composition are improvisational in nature, so I would urge the performer to add his or her own flair to the piece. Over the years I have had several students perform the composition, and each time I have added a few little embellishments resulting in the current edition. For ease of performance I would suggest a longer shaft mallet so that the octaves are more accurately executed. Also, a heavier mallet such as the Marimba One Double Helix will greatly assist you in bringing out the fundamental pitches of the lower notes. All chords with arpeggiated notations should be executed quickly to mimic the strum of an aggressive flamenco-style guitar performance. Several sections of the piece are rubato, but the give and take should always take place with a sense of rhythm.

Level: Medium Approx. playing time: 3’00”
