PROGRAM NOTES I have always found a great deal of inspiration in film and television. Frequently when I am writing, I find myself envisioning a movie in my head and simply attempting to write the soundtrack to that movie. I’ve often wished that I could show my imagined movie to the audience while the piece is being played. After witnessing a performance of Garth Neustadter’s Seaborne, an incredible piece for percussion ensemble with video, it became clear that this was a real possibility. Around the same time, I became obsessed with Qasim Naqvi’s synthesizer album Teenages, and also around the same time, Andrew Lynge approached me to write a snare drum solo. Thus, Kingdoms was born. In the Austin Kleon-inspired spirit of “nothing is original,” here are the musicians, movies, and video games that influenced this piece: Garth Neustadter, Bon Iver, Hans Zimmer, Qasim Naqvi, Stranger Things, Holly Herndon, Blade Runner 2049, Mitch Murder, Hollow Knight, Bill Wurtz, Interstellar, and Square Peg Round Hole. I must also give credit to my students for first imagining that we might someday live in a world full of bugs.
—Russell Wharton
CONSORTIUM MEMBERS Kingdoms was commissioned by a consortium led by Dr. Andrew Lynge and included the following members: Lucas Allen Jesse Backes Dr. Logan Ball Thomas Andrew Barlow McKenna Blenk Dr. Christopher Butler Dr. Omar Carmenates Kevin Castelo Alex Chao Cory Doran Dr. Andrew Eldridge Tim Feerst
Jami’ Fennell Nigel Fernandez Matthew James Dr. Matthew Jordan Stephen Karukas Dr. Kellen King Tahlequah Kirk Dr. Oni Lara Austin Lemmons Dr. Mariusz Mocarski Brandon Mooney Daniel Myers
Dr. Rob Parks Matt Penland Dr. Francisco Perez McKayla Phillips Dr. Akira Robles Nicholas Sardello Dr. Marco Schirripa Dr. Bailey Seabury Dr. Ben Stiers Conner Viets Dr. Eric Willie
PERFORMANCE & TECHNOLOGY NOTES Kingdoms requires a concert snare drum and an optional Meinl Backbeat Pro Tambourine. The snare drum is played with sticks, brushes, and fingers. It is recommended that the performer play along to the supplied click track. In order to do this, some minor technological details will need to be addressed. Here’s what you’ll need: • A computer or laptop • An audio interface capable of sending at least 4 channels of output, with the ability to switch between outputs for headphone monitoring (i.e., Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) • Headphones and headphone extension cable (if necessary) • Software capable of playing and routing video and audio. Most common digital audio workstations, such as Logic Pro or Ableton Live, are able to do this. If you don’t have a DAW, there are a number of routing software applications, such as Audio Hijack or Loopback, that can be used for a workaround. The instructions below are not specific to any one piece of software or hardware but have been broadened and made as universal as possible. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Connect your audio interface to your computer. Connect your speakers to outputs 1-2 on your audio interface. Connect your headphones to outputs 3-4. Load the performance video (Kingdoms-VIDEO ACCOMPANIMENT) and the click track file into your software. Route the audio from the performance video to outputs 1-2. Route the click track to outputs 3-4. Test and ensure that everything is working. You should hear the click track coming from your headphones and the audio from the performance video coming from the speakers.
This piece can be performed with or without the video, though performing with the video is preferable.
NOTATION GUIDE
1. Play with fingertips at the 6 o’clock edge of the head, right near the snare throw. 2. Unmetered double stroke roll using two fingers on each hand 3. Normal hit but leave finger on head, similar to a “dead stroke” 4. Just like a diddle but with two fingers 5. “Rim shot” using one finger near the 4 or 8 o’clock positions on the head. Let ring. 6. Same as above but “dead stroke” the finger into the head, stopping all vibration. 7. Muffle the center of the drum head using the fingers, similar to timpani. 8. Normal hit 9. Closed concert roll 10. Single buzz with one hand. Let buzz until all vibration stops. 11. BBP = Meinl Backbeat Pro tambourine. This sits on the drum head and has a raised edge that is struck to create an aggressive and industrial sound. 12. Press the left bead into the drum head and strike the left stick with the right stick. Adjust the angle of the left stick to create a pitch bend effect. 13. Make sure these rhythms are clearly readable and articulate. 14. Swirl the brush against the drum head in a circular pattern to create a soft, sustained sound.
Level: Med-Advanced Approx. playing time: 6'10"
