NOTES Fanfare is a short work for a large percussion ensemble of 12 players. Featuring an array of melodic and non-melodic instruments, this piece is intended as a bold concert opener. Ideally suited for larger performance spaces, the intention is to fill the room with sound, enveloping the listener. • The timpani part is written for four drums with the intention that the performer will execute some pedal tuning while playing between some pitches. Because a few different options for tuning schemes are possible, it is up to the performer to make the decision about which drums to place which notes on, and in turn, which notes will require pedal tuning while playing. • The two snare drums should be different sizes (for example 5” and 6”) and tuned so there is a clear separation of pitch, but not so wide that when played together, they feel incongruous. Avoid using a field drum for the lower snare drum. A larger concert snare drum is preferred. • Brake drums should be of medium resonance so the decay times are not extensively long. If needed, use dampening materials to create an ideal decay to match the other instruments and performance space. • The brake drums should be played with the back ends of snare drumsticks, not a plastic glockenspiel mallet or other metal implement. • It is recommended that dampening or muffling is used for the concert bass drum part, whether that is one’s hand, leg, or a mute of some kind. Utilize this in spots where the part requires successive notes to be executed cleanly (i.e. 16th notes or triplets) and where clear articulation is critical. Remove or reduce the muffling on notes where the drum plays larger impacts or longer note values and let the drum resonate fully. • The tam-tam should be balanced and blended within the concert bass drum sound to feel like one instrument. The bass drum should carry the weight of those combined notes and the tam-tam should be thought of as adding additional resonance and bloom. Avoid harsh initial articulations on the tam-tam in favor of a warm, open sound. When crash cymbals are played with the bass drum, the sound should be balanced and blended in a similar fashion. • The single arch is one suggested setup, however, feel free to adjust instrument placement, or devise alternate setups to suit the needs of your ensemble or performance space. —Jonathan Ovalle
