PROGRAM NOTES

Written for solo snare drum and audio accompaniment, Sapience is a piece that was written in memory of an influential late friend of mine, Dr. Rob Parks. I wanted to compose a piece that echoed his vastness in musical understanding and pedagogical prowess, as well as his ability to be caring and empathetic. When composing the electronic component of this work, large inspiration was taken from elements of neo-soul, hip-hop, and gamelan styles of music. Furthermore, I was watching the television series Stranger Things for the first time as I was composing this work, and inspiration from the theme song of the show can be found throughout the electronic component.

My favorite snare drum music to perform is material that demands a great deal of dexterity from the performer. Sapience utilizes rapid hand feel changes through the use of rhythmic language from rudimental, concert, and Basel styles of drumming.

PERFORMANCE NOTES

The performer should work to make clear and precise changes from section to section when moving between different styles of drumming. Throughout the piece there are also numerous quotes from well-known snare drum etudes and excerpts. One may find brief quotes from Joseph Tompkins, Jacques Delécluse, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Sergei Prokofiev. Feel free to play these reminiscently of the original source material as they appear. Lastly, please note that the music in measures 141-149 is an expansion on the initial rhythms from measures 9-17.
