During my time as a doctoral student at Indiana University, I attended Fairview United Methodist Church. The pastor during much of this time was Curtis Hurley. During the summer of 2012, I was asked if I could bring a marimba to perform a special piece for the Offertory during Pastor Hurley’s final service at Fairview, as he was being transferred to a different church in a different town. Luckily, I was able to borrow my roommate’s beautiful instrument, and so I began planning what to perform that day. The music director had already compiled a list of Pastor Hurley’s favorite hymns. Toward the top of the list was Gustav Holst’s “In the Bleak Midwinter,” and at the very top was Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Come Down O Love Divine.” I decided to turn these two pieces into one solo medley. The arrangement was premiered during Pastor Hurley’s final service on June 24, 2012.

Since that time, I have occasionally performed “In the Bleak Midwinter” as a stand-alone piece for Christmas concerts, since it is a Christmas carol. For this reason there is an optional Fine at the end of the tune before the improvisatory transition into “Come Down O Love Divine.” The arrangement can be performed either way. When played in its entirety, there is a gradual build from tenderness and reflection to energy and celebration.

If the player wishes, they may improvise during the transition between the two hymns in a style similar to the notated transition in measures 66-70. Simple melodic ideas can be played in the key of D, with the A in the left hand continuously filling in the gaps between melody notes. Keep the dynamic of the left hand a level lower than the right hand. Rhythm and energy are more important than melodic content at this point in the arrangement, and the transition should create an air of anticipation as the music moves toward the arrival of the main theme.

ABOUT THE HYMNS: The text to “In the Bleak Midwinter” was written by Christina Rossetti and was first published in 1872. Holst’s setting was first published in The English Hymnal of 1906 to the hymn tune “Cranham.”

The text to “Come Down O Love Divine” was written by Bianco de Siena in the 14th century, and translated to English by Richard Littledale in 1867. Vaughan Williams’ setting was first published in The English Hymnal of 1906 to the hymn tune “Down Ampney.”
