PROGRAM & PERFORMANCE NOTES

Similar to the relationship between acoustic guitar and voice, August is meant to illustrate delicate accompaniments that surround and transition into simple melodies. Its nature should be subtle but not without purpose. It is recommended the performer distinguish between melodic and harmonic material during practice. Exploring different mallet combinations and stroke types will help in this endeavor.

The rubato nature of this piece allows the performer to stretch tempo dramatically. With that said, the tempo markings use a double tilde (≈), indicating an approximate tempo. These tempo markings will get the performer in the general range of appropriate tempos.

August requires a 5-octave marimba.
