What’s your favourite Edmonton winter festival—or your go-to way to enjoy the season?

It’s the most dazzling time of year in Edmonton— when the city trades autumn gold for festival lights, steaming mugs, and weekends packed with celebration. In this issue, we unwrap the season with our Gift Guide (page 10) and spotlight the artistry of Edmonton’s winter festivals (page 14), where ice, fire, and imagination meet.
We’re also looking ahead to February with Romantic Edmonton (page 34), your guide to Valentine’s dining and date-night ideas that shine all winter long. Wherever the season takes you—through the markets, across the iceways, or into the glow of the river valley—bundle up and dive in. Edmonton never feels more alive than it does under a little snow and a lot of light.
1) What’s your very Edmonton way to survive — or even enjoy — winter? 2) If you were creating your own winter festival, what would it celebrate?

Q1: I will survive winter the only way: Keep Moving! I love getting outside, especially taking laps of our hill at Snow Valley Ski Club. I’m also looking forward to running outside, walking in off leash parks, playing hockey or skating at the local ODR. We also like to dine at local eateries, both old favourites or unique experiences. The more flavour, the better!
Q2: It's hard to compete with Silver Skate but it would be a North Saskatchewan River Hockey tournament, set up like pond hockey. It would move along the river each season to Laurier Park, Dawson Park, Terwillegar Park, Emily Murphy Park, or even Rundle Park. With a bit of shoveling and flooding in February I'm sure it would work. Possibly.
Tim Dea, Communications Manager, Snow Valley Ski Club

Q1: I’ve built a jaunty collection of brightly coloured toques and vintage jackets to shake off the winter doldrums. I’m also lucky because working at the Citadel means I have a winter refuge in the Lee Pavilion, filled with plants, light, and warmth. It’s where we eat our lunches and defrost.
Q2: I really loved The Lost Sock Rescue Society at 2025 Edmonton Fringe Festival, so my festival would celebrate socks. Warm, fuzzy socks. The making of socks, the wearing of socks, the history of socks, the display of rare and wonderful socks. It would feature sock-themed food and drinks, a giant mascot, and cozy corners to curl up in. Because nothing says winter joy quite like warm feet and a good laugh. Sockapalooza? Sockstock? SoleFest!
Jessie van Rijn, Executive Director, The Citadel Theatre

Q1: I lean in. I put on a coat so puffy it could double as a small architectural structure. I stomp through the snow like a protagonist in a weather-based tragedy, then reward myself by putting on a pair of fresh socks... I embrace the frostbite, because if I can’t be warm, I might as well be dramatic about it. Taking in as much dance and theatre in those cold months is also key to survival.
Q2: It would be called “Snowverload.” People would gather to collectively complain about the weather in increasingly operatic ways: arias, monologues, interpretive shivers. There’d be a bonfire for catharsis, and then everyone would share pierogies in silence while a local artist reads ominous forecasts aloud like a post-dramatic poem.
Jake Tkaczyk, Managing Director, Ukrainian Shumka Dancers / theatre-maker / Professional Snow Complainer/PHd

In Edmonton, winter isn’t a pause — it’s a gallery that opens after dark. As snow deepens and daylight shrinks, the city’s festival circuit turns frost and shadow into canvases of light, ice, and community wonder.
The first glow comes early: All Is Bright on 124 Street kicks things off each November with immersive light art, live music, and cozy street ambiance. On Whyte Avenue, Winter Whyte Light Up follows right after — turning the strip into a parade of firepits, lanterns, and local faces warmed by community spirit. Around the same time, Festival of Trees casts its own glow indoors — rows of elaborately decorated trees and gingerbread scenes transform the Convention Centre into an enchanting holiday gallery.
As winter deepens, Zoominescence at the Edmonton Valley Zoo transfigures trails and enclosures into glowing wonderlands. Light sculptures, tunnels, and interactive installations shift through whimsical shapes, beckoning visitors to wander, gasp, and stay longer than intended in the frosty dark.
Then comes the season’s icy crescendo. Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival brings ice carving, fire theatre, folk music, and visual art to Alberta Avenue. Sculptors, dancers, and musicians thread heritage and modernity through snow and ice, turning streets into open-air installations that glow with life.

From here, winter flowers. Silver Skate Festival in Wilfred Laurier Park blends the sculptural with the kinetic: skaters spiral past snow castles, cast shadows on sculpture walls, and move through fire-lit performances. What’s striking is how art and motion become inseparable — the ice isn’t just a backdrop, it’s part of the show.
Through these festivals, Edmonton crafts a narrative: that cold is not absence but possibility. That darkness is not void, but space to illuminate. That creativity in winter doesn’t whisper — it glows, pulses, and dances.
In Edmonton, we don’t wait for spring to show off. We build sculptures, plant lanterns, kindle fire, and sculpt snow so the season itself becomes the exhibit — where every breath is visible, and every step is part of a masterpiece.

Shadow Theatre brings An Iliad to the stage — a one-man tour de force that transforms Homer’s ancient epic into a visceral modern retelling. Part poetry, part performance, it’s the story of the Trojan War told by a lone Poet, haunted by the endless cycle of human conflict. The play has drawn critical acclaim worldwide for its raw intensity and emotional depth — actors like David Wenham (The Lord of the Rings) have tackled the role. Shadow Theatre’s production promises that same mix of fire and reflection: a night of theatre that’s both timeless and urgently present.

While much of Fort Edmonton Park rests for the winter, the award-winning Indigenous Peoples Experience remains open year-round — and it’s reason enough to visit. Through immersive storytelling, multimedia, and first-person perspectives from Indigenous voices, the exhibit explores life on the plains before and after European contact. It’s part history, part living conversation, and deeply moving in every season.
During the holidays, the park also hosts the Edmonton Christmas Market and throughout the year the I.A.M. Collective gift shop, showcasing locally made works by Indigenous artists and makers. It’s a chance to experience culture, community, and craftsmanship all in one place.

The Art Gallery of Alberta opens winter with two major exhibitions that explore the language of form and time. Temporal, featuring sculptor Catherine Burgess and photographic artist Alison Rossiter, reflects on the passage of time through material and process — steel and paper shaped by patience and precision. Shift, by Marie Lannoo and Katie Ohe, dives into colour, motion, and perception, creating luminous works that seem to move as you do.
Together, they offer a winter meditation on stillness and change, showcasing the depth of Alberta’s contemporary art scene.

ove in Edmonton doesn’t wait for spring — it glows right through the frost. Whether you’re planning the perfect Valentine’s Day or just stealing a night away in midwinter, the city knows how to make cold evenings warm.
Start with dinner: the Harvest Room at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald offers timeless romance with candlelight and river views, while Lady Bea’s in the 124th Street area wraps you in velvet light and old-world charm. Café Bloom at the Muttart Conservatory offers a private, heated dome experience that is too good to miss.
Not ready for the night to end? Stop by Brew & Bloom in Ellerslie, where fresh flowers, good coffee, and soft lighting make conversation linger. Or share dessert at Café Bicyclette, a sweet place for sweet talk. Or take something home from the French patisserie, Duchess Bake Shop, to end your evening intimately.
You could also embrace the season together. Glide hand-in-hand along the iceways at Victoria Park, or circle the rink at City Hall. Even Rundle Park offers
ice trails where the air feels sharper and laughter carries farther.
And for something truly memorable, plan your Valentine’s around the Silver Skate Festival and their award-winning fantasy Folk Trail, where love shines as bright as the ice.
In Edmonton, romance isn’t about escaping winter; it’s about celebrating it, together.
1. Valentine’s dinner at The Harvest Room — classic, candlelit perfection.
2. Coffee and blooms at Bloom & Brew — two locations of floral charm.
3. Afternoon tea at Lady Bea’s — pure ambiance.
4. Skate the Victoria Park Iceway or the rink at City Hall.
5. Take in the lights at Silver Skate’s Folk Trail — romance, the Edmonton way.

West Edmonton isn’t about sitting quietly in galleries or strolling narrow lanes. It’s about big experiences; a selfcontained entertainment ecosystem. Whether you’re seeking thrills, art, theatre, water, lights, or just a place to get lost in wonder, WEM and its surrounds offer a mini city all to itself. Here’s your guide to standout venues & attractions:
1. West Edmonton Mall (WEM)
A beast of a destination: over 800 stores, themed entertainment, indoor rides, and attractions all under one roof. Think a tropical wave pool, ice palace, marine life exhibits, and Galaxyland — literally a little city inside a mall. 8882 170 St NW WEM.ca
2. Galaxyland Powered by Hasbro
Within WEM, this indoor amusement park houses dozens of rides, from gentle loops to thrilling roller coasters, all themed and mapped for all ages. WEM’s attractions list includes Galaxyland as a flagship feature. WEM.ca/play/attractions/Galaxyland
3. World Waterpark
Also inside WEM: one of North America’s largest indoor wave pools, multiple slides, aquatic adventures and year-round splash fun, no matter how cold it is outside. 17 slides, tropical air in mid-winter? Yes, please. WEM.ca/play/attractions/ World-Waterpark
4. Jubilations Dinner Theatre
For evenings instead of daytime thrills. A full buffet supper followed by some of the best theatrical and musical performances around. Jubilations.ca
Inside WEM’s entertainment wing, Starlight Casino brings the Vegas energy north — complete with slot machines, live tables, and themed lounges. Whether you’re chasing luck or just soaking up the buzz, it’s a lively, grown-up contrast to the mall’s family attractions.

WHY VISIT WEST EDMONTON?
All-weather appeal. Rain, snow, or shining sun — you can explore, watch, swim, and shop without stepping outdoors.
Immersive scale. You can spend an entire day (or two) exploring every corner, from aquarium to skating to fine dining.
Mix of spectacle + local heart. Big attractions draw crowds, but local galleries, theatre, and art spots nearby add texture.
Convenience. It’s something of a selfsufficient hub: food, shows, shopping, and fun all in one zone.
QUICK VISIT GUIDE
Getting there: Ample parking zones; the mall is also served by multiple bus routes. Use the 170 Street pedestrian bridge to access adjacent neighbourhoods safely.

Snowflakes are falling, lights are glowing, and Edmonton is deep into its season of celebration. Winter here isn’t something to endure — it’s something to savour. From art carved in ice to music under the stars, the city hums with a kind of coldweather energy that feels distinctly our own.
This is the time for glowing trails and steaming mugs, for late-night theatre and early-morning skates. The city’s winter festivals — Deep Freeze, Flying Canoë Volant, Silver Skate, and more — turn frozen parks into galleries of snow and light, proving once again that Edmontonians don’t hide from winter; we dance through it.
As the nights grow long, find your light wherever it shines brightest — in a packed theatre, beside a firepit at a festival, or gliding through the river valley under a halo of snow.
Onstage, the season continues to sparkle with Les Misérables at the Jubilee Auditorium and Alberta Ballet’s Swan Lake — elegance in motion to warm even the frostiest night. Late winter warms up with
the return of Edmonton’s Caribbean Winter Food Festival and a fresh staging of The Wizard of Oz at the Citadel—two February events bursting with colour, flavour, and heart.
Then, as winter finally loosens its grip, we’ll welcome spring with our Dining Issue — a delicious look at the city’s best new tables, rising chefs, and where to eat (and sip) next.
Until then, bundle up, step out, and let the season work its magic. Edmonton in winter isn’t just beautiful — it’s alive.
