Editor’s Note

Editor's Note SUN, FUN & FESTIVAL SEASON HAS BEGUN!

Summer in Edmonton is all about energy—the kind that fills the streets with music, laughter, and the irresistible scent of food sizzling on a patio grill. Festival season is here, and with it comes a whirlwind of events, from world-class concerts to cultural celebrations and thrilling attractions.

In this issue, we’re diving into the best of Edmonton’s summer scene. Whether you’re looking for the perfect patio, a must-see festival, or an unforgettable adventure, we’ve got you covered.

So grab your sunglasses, claim your spot at a bustling street festival, and make the most of these sun-drenched months. Because in Edmonton, summer doesn’t just arrive—it takes over.

WE ASKED:

1) What is your favourite Edmonton festival? 2) From which restaurant patio do you most like to enjoy watching spring?

1) My favorite festivals are the Silver Skate Festival and the Taste of Edmonton. I'm Dutch on my mom's side so we've been going to the Silver Skate festival for years, sometimes just for the Dutch food! Taste of Edmonton allows you to try food from so many of the culinary gems in Edmonton.

2) My favorite patio is MKT. With four kids, I don't have too much time to venture around Edmonton. MKT is a quick walk from the Antique Mall for a quick lunch or after-work drinks.

Bobbi Weibel, Owner, Old Strathcona Antique Mall

1) My favorite festival is the Folk Music Festival. There’s something magical about sitting on the hill, listening to incredible music while the sun sets over the city. The energy is unbeatable, everyone’s relaxed and soaking up the summer vibes. Plus, the food vendors are top-tier! I always grab green onion cakes and a cold drink while swaying to the music.

2) Nothing beats patio season. My go-to spot is La Petite Iza. The charming little French bistro’s patio has a gorgeous view of the river valley. It makes you want to slow down and savor the moment. I am a little biased towards Bianco’s patio, there’s something about the way the city wakes from winter that makes it feel special.

Ahmed Desai, Manager, Bianco and Nero Restaurants

1) I gotta admit, can’t help it—I get so excited for festival season! One of my absolute favourite combos? K-Days and Taste of Edmonton. I’ve been going to K-Days for as long as I can remember, and every summer, I look forward to the outdoor shows and that unbeatable festival energy. Add in Taste of Edmonton, and it’s the ultimate summer experience!

2) Picture this: dining al fresco on the stunning Hotel Macdonald courtyard patio, a refreshing mocktail in hand, the sun warming my face as I soak in the river valley and city skyline. With dishes that are both comforting favourites and some unique flavours. It is my springtime indulgence!

Secret LIVES OF EDMONTON’S ATTRACTIONS THE

TELUS World of Science – Edmonton

G

o beyond the exhibits and into the weird, wonderful, and occasionally grimy work behind Edmonton’s most popular destinations.

From 80-year-old tractors to towering thrill rides, the attractions that define Edmonton are powered by a whole lot more than ticket sales and visitor stats. Behind the scenes, teams of engineers, educators, curators, performers—and yes, custodians—keep these experiences running smoothly and full of surprises.

Three standout destinations opened their doors and let us peek inside.

At Reynolds-Alberta Museum in Wetaskiwin, a new exhibition reveals the science of traction using tracked vehicles—and high heels. At TELUS World of Science – Edmonton (TWOSE), the city’s coolest science guy is flash-freezing Taylor Swift–themed ice cream. And at Galaxyland, the massive indoor amusement park in West Edmonton Mall, a cast of hundreds keeps the rides spinning, records breaking, and guests grinning.

These are the stories from the other side of the velvet rope.

THE MACHINES, THE MESS, AND THE BIG IDEAS

Reynolds-Alberta Museum

Known for its collection of tractors, planes, and all things mechanical, the Reynolds-Alberta Museum recently launched Making Tracks: Crawlers, Tractors & Snowmobiles—a clever, hands-on look at how machines stay mobile over tricky terrain. It’s surprisingly elegant, with exhibits that include snowshoes, a “seat of nails,” and yes, a stiletto heel, used to explain how weight distribution affects surface contact.

But there’s grime behind the glamour. Most of the 24 tracked vehicles in the exhibit were donated in rough shape. “They hadn’t been deep cleaned in decades,” says Brian Manning, Curator of Agriculture & Industry Collections. “Removing 80+ years of grease, oil, and soil is a dirty job—but it’s necessary to get them ready for display.”

Still, it’s not all cleaning fluid and elbow grease. “The best part is dreaming up the Big Idea for an exhibition,” staff say. “Taking rare machines and building something memorable and relevant around them—that’s where the real magic is.”

GREASE, GRIT & HIGH HEELS

Behind the scenes at Reynolds-Alberta Museum

Making Tracks: Crawlers, Tractors & Snowmobiles explores how machines (and people) move over difficult terrain. One exhibit highlights traction using a stiletto heel—no joke. It’s part physics, part fun, and totally unexpected.

But to get there, staff had to prep 24 tracked vehicles, many coated in decades of grime. “Removing 80+ years of buildup isn’t glamorous,” says curator Brian Manning, “but it’s essential.”

ICE CREAM CHEMISTRY & STAGECRAFT

TELUS World of Science – Edmonton

Over at TWOSE, Matthew Green has one of the most eclectic roles in the city. As Lead Science Presenter, he oversees programming for the science stage, birthday parties, gallery events—and the very serious business of ice cream innovation.

“We use liquid nitrogen to flash-freeze themed ice cream for special events,” says Green, who’s worked at the centre for 19 years. “I’ve done Creeper Crackle for Minecraft, Lavender Haze for Swifties, and a holiday gingerbread version based on my favourite cookie recipe.”

But for every moment of fun on stage, there’s a mountain of prep behind the curtain. “Only about 10 to 20 percent of what guests see happens live,” he says. “The rest is mixing chemicals, checking inventory, creating procedures, and training staff to deliver it all safely and memorably.”

It’s a job that involves equal parts showmanship and science, and Green thrives on both. “I love getting reactions from people—surprise, joy, curiosity. That’s the real reward.”

ICE CREAM, BUT MAKE IT SCIENCE

Matthew Green’s sweetest gig at Telus World of Science

Using liquid nitrogen and a lot of imagination, Matthew Green creates custom ice cream flavours for TELUS World of Science events—like Lavender Haze for Swifties and Creeper Crackle with Pop Rocks.

Testing is serious business. “I’ll send out an invite and 30–40 staff show up to sample,” Green laughs. “It’s R&D—but fun.”

Science has never been so delicious.

THRILLS, SPILLS, AND RECORD-BREAKERS

Galaxyland at West Edmonton Mall

It’s hard to imagine Galaxyland as anything other than a swirl of flashing lights, laughter, and thrill rides—but behind the scenes, there’s a full-scale operation running 24/7 to keep the magic alive.

Covering over 400,000 square feet, Galaxyland is the largest indoor amusement park in North America, employing over 250 people. The park is also home to rides that have set global records— like Space Shot, which was once the tallest indoor tower ride in the world.

“Ride maintenance is no joke,” says Manager Devin Carradine. “Our team works daily to keep everything running at peak performance. And our custodial crew deserves huge credit—they clean every inch of the park, top to bottom.”

The job isn’t just mechanical—it’s collaborative. “We work with teams from marketing, I.T., security, and more to keep Galaxyland safe, exciting, and fun,” Carradine says. “Getting to test new rides before they open? That’s definitely a perk.”

The team is currently developing a new ride they say will be a record-setter. “Stay

GALAXYLAND’S 250PERSON DREAM TEAM

What it takes to power an indoor amusement empire

Galaxyland at West Edmonton Mall is a massive operation, covering 400,000 square feet and staffed by 250+ employees. Teams across maintenance, marketing, custodial, security, and tech keep the rides spinning and the smiles coming.

Devin Carradine, Galaxyland Manager, says the best part is being first to test a new ride—and yes, there’s a new one on the way. “It’ll be something no one’s seen before,” he says.

tuned,” Carradine teases. “It’s going to be one-of-a-kind.”

THE FUN BENEATH THE SURFACE

From vintage engines to nitrogen clouds and mile-long maintenance checklists, Edmonton’s attractions run on more than just ticket sales and spectacle—they run on passion, teamwork, and a whole lot of behind-the-scenes brilliance.

Reynolds, TWOSE, and Galaxyland proved there’s just as much story behind the curtain as on the main stage.

So the next time you’re riding a coaster, watching a science show, or admiring a historic snowmobile, spare a thought for the team that made it all possible—grease, goggles, and all.

FESTIVAL LIKE A PRO

HACKS, TIPS & SURVIVAL TRICKS FOR EDMONTON’S SUMMER SCENE

Edmonton doesn’t just do festivals—it practically lives and breathes them all summer long. From food fests to theatre in the park to citywide parties, there’s something happening almost every weekend. But if you don’t come prepared, you’ll end up sunburned, dehydrated, and stuck in a mile-long porta-potty lineup when your favourite band is playing. Avoid rookie mistakes with this handy guide to festival survival.

1. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

The summer festival season kicks off in May and doesn’t slow down until fall (when the winter festivals gear up), so it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Avoid last-minute FOMO by checking schedules in advance. The Edmonton International Street Performers

Festival (July 4-13) is all about juggling, acrobatics, and comedy downtown, while the Edmonton International Jazz Festival (June 21-29) brings smooth tunes to venues all over the city. Planning ahead means you won’t miss out—plus, some festivals offer early bird pricing if you’re on top of things.

2. GET THERE (Without the Parking Nightmare) Here’s the deal: festival parking is awful. Churchill Square? Forget it. Gallagher Park during Folk Fest? You’re dreaming. Instead, take transit, bike, or carpool. The LRT will get you close to most major festival sites, and bike valets are often available (Folk Fest and Heritage Festival both have them). If you must drive, park a little further away and walk—it’ll save you time and frustration.

3. HYDRATION IS YOUR BEST FRIEND

The number one cause of festival fatigue? Not drinking enough water. Bring a refillable water bottle—most festivals have water stations, and it beats paying $5 for a bottle of the same stuff from a vendor. Bonus: Taste of Edmonton (July 17-27) has plenty of amazing food, but salty snacks + sun = dehydration. Plan accordingly.

cramming onto the High Level Bridge with thousands of others, try a less chaotic spot: Forest Heights Park, End of Steel Park in Old Strathcona, or even a rooftop patio downtown (hello, Hotel Macdonald’s Confederation Lounge).

9. CHARGE YOUR PHONE

(or Bring a Backup Battery)

There’s nothing worse than your phone dying when you’re trying to meet up with friends or grab that perfect sunset shot at K-Days (July 19-28).

4. SUN SAFETY IS NO JOKE

Edmonton summers are sneaky—you might feel fine in the shade, but one hour in direct sunlight at Whyte Avenue Art Walk (July 11-13) and suddenly you’re a lobster. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are musthaves. If you’re hitting an all-day outdoor event (looking at you, Canada Day at the Legislature), find a shady spot early before they all disappear.

Worse, you arrive via Uber…now you can’t call one to get home! A portable battery pack is a lifesaver—just trust me on this one.

10. VOLUNTEER FOR THE ULTIMATE FESTIVAL EXPERIENCE

5. BRING CASh (Yes, Really)

Yes, most places take cards now, but some still don’t—especially food trucks and market vendors. Having a bit of cash on hand can save you the embarrassment of holding up the line while you fumble with your phone trying to reload your tap-to-pay app.

6. PRO-LEVEL FESTIVAL SEATING

For festivals like Folk Fest (Aug 7-10), seating is a sport. If you’re in it for the long haul, bring a low-profile festival chair or a blanket. Anything too tall and you’ll get that look from people behind you. Also, at Folk Fest, the tarp run is a thing—get there early if you want prime real estate.

7. EAT SMART

Some festivals (ahem Heritage Festival, early August) will tempt you with so much amazing food that you’ll want to try everything. Do it strategically. Start light, pace yourself, and share with friends so you don’t fill up too fast. Oh, and if you’re at Taste of Edmonton, go during non-peak hours (mid-afternoon or later at night) to avoid the biggest crowds.

8. ESCAPE THE CANADA DAY FIREWORKS CROWDS

The Canada Day fireworks over the river valley are stunning, but so is the traffic jam afterward. Instead of

Want free entry, cool perks, and behind-the-scenes access? Volunteer! The Cariwest Caribbean Arts Festival (Aug 8-10), for example, is always looking for people to help with the parade, and it’s a great way to be part of the action. Plus, you’ll meet cool people, and sometimes there’s free food.

Edmonton’s summer is packed with festivals, and if you do it right, you’ll make some incredible memories. Follow these tips, and you’ll be the one giving advice next year. Now, go forth and festival like a pro!

EDMONTON’S PATIOS ARE CALLING

Summer in Edmonton doesn’t sneak in—it kicks down the door with a blast of sunshine and a deep-seated need to eat, drink, and people-watch in the open air. We are a city that takes patio season seriously. Whether it’s brunch with the girls, a solo latte with a side of book, or cocktails as the sun sets over Whyte Ave, our patios are where we unwind, connect, and soak in the fleeting season.

We’ve covered patios before (many times), but every summer brings new favourites, fresh energy, and more than a few surprises. This year, we’re focusing on five standout patios that offer style, charm, and serious stay-a-while vibes—plus a passing nod to an Edmonton classic celebrating a big birthday.

CAFÉ BLOOM

Nestled in the Muttart Conservatory, Café Bloom feels like a secret garden in the heart of the city. The patio is small but stunning, surrounded by lush greenery and floral views. It’s peaceful and a

little whimsical—the perfect place for a tea break or a light, locally inspired lunch. Inside or out, the design is warm, refined, and thoughtfully curated, just like their menu.

(780) 263-2880 | 9626 96A St. | CafeBloom.ca

REMEDY CAFÉ

At Remedy’s Savona Centre location in Sherwood Park, the patio is all about clean lines, big skies, and open space. It’s bright, minimalist, and catches the sun just right—perfect for a midday pick-me-up or a laid-back weekend brunch. Remedy’s signature menu is as eclectic as ever, with butter chicken wraps, vegan curries, and cardamom-sweet chai that locals swear by. This isn’t your leafy garden patio—it’s all about open air, great food, and that unmistakable Remedy vibe: casual, colourful, and always full of character.

(780) 570-1060 | #110, 200 Festival Lane, Sherwood Park. | RemedyCafe.ca

TIRAMISU BISTRO

Tucked along 124 Street, Tiramisu Bistro offers one of the most charming courtyard patios in the city. String lights, garden greenery, and Italian comfort food set the mood for everything from long lunches to romantic dinners. The energy here is calm but lively, and if you’re lucky, you might catch live music drifting through the air on a weekend evening. Their brunch game is strong—but trust us, the patio pasta hits different. (780) 452-3393 | 10750 124 St. | TiramisuBistro.ca

AND ONE MORE CLASSIC...

We can’t talk patios without a mention of the Confederation Lounge at the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald. Celebrating 110 years this summer, “The Mac” remains one of the most iconic places to sip something special while overlooking the river valley. If patios had royalty, this one would wear the crown. (866) 540-4468 | 10065 100 St. | Fairmont.com/Macdonald-Edmonton

Whether you’re craving charm, elegance, or a party under the sun, Edmonton’s patios deliver in every flavour. So grab your sunnies, order something delicious, and settle in—summer won’t wait.

VIOLINO GASTRONOMIA ITALIANA

If elegance is what you’re after, Violino delivers. Set in a converted heritage home off High Street, this tucked-away patio is one of the city’s most romantic. Under the trees and glowing string lights, you’ll find fine Italian cuisine that’s worth lingering over—especially when paired with a bottle of wine from their well-curated list. Quiet, refined, and utterly transportive.

(780) 757-8701 | 10133 125 St. | Violino.ca

EL CORTEZ MEXICAN KITCHEN + TEQUILA BAR

Looking for high energy? El Cortez is your place. Their back patio is vibrant, colourful, and tailor-made for long evenings with friends. With bold murals, spicy tacos, and margaritas that don’t mess around, it’s a fiesta waiting to happen. The music’s loud, the flavours are louder, and the vibe is unmistakably fun. EDMONTON’S FARMERS’ MARKET NEWS

Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market is Expanding!

Big changes are coming to the OSFM. The beloved market is gearing up for a major revamp, turning it into a multi-day destination while keeping its lively, homegrown charm.

Planned upgrades include better plumbing, heating, and electrical systems—essentials for staying open beyond Saturdays. Expect fresh new "neighborhoods" within the market, giving vendor stalls their own unique vibe.

Plus, a General Store will offer vendor goods all week, and a new café and event space will serve up farm-to-table eats every day. It’s all about making the market even better—without losing the character that makes it a community favourite.

CANADIAN, ALWAYS LOCAL Proudly

t Info Edmonton, we’ve championed local from the start. Whether it’s spotlighting Alberta-born businesses, homegrown festivals, or Edmonton’s vibrant dining and shopping scenes, our focus has always been on what’s made right here.

In 2025, Canadians are embracing this ethos more than ever. A recent Angus Reid poll found that 98% of Canadians are actively seeking “Made in Canada” products, with 85% replacing U.S. goods when possible. This surge in economic patriotism has led to a significant increase in traffic to directories like Made in CA, which saw over 100,000 visitors in a single day following recent trade tensions.

Alberta’s manufacturing sector is also thriving, with sales reaching $9.0 billion in January 2025,

marking the highest level since September 2023. This growth is largely driven by increased sales in petroleum and coal products, as well as food manufacturing. Supporting local isn’t just about economics; it’s about community. When you choose Canadian-made, you’re investing in your neighbors, your city, and your country’s future. Discover more about Edmonton’s local gems in our directory at InfoEdmonton.com
