A family hike at Athabasca Lookout near Hinton shows just how easy it is to make the most of Alberta’s endless outdoor adventures. Whether you’re exploring the trails, hitting the road for a weekend away, or diving into our top five mustsees for every region, there’s no shortage of ways to fill your summer days

WHY GO ANYWHERE ELSE?

Albertans love to travel. Give us a free weekend, and we’re already planning the next road trip, weekend escape, or big summer adventure. But here’s the thing—why look anywhere else when we’ve got everything right here?

Alberta is a province of contrasts, where every trip feels like stepping into a different world.

Exploring Alberta is the Ultimate Getaway

One weekend, you’re climbing in the Rockies or paddling across an emerald lake. The next, you’re walking among ancient hoodoos or standing on the edge of a vast northern salt plain. And if you’re a history buff? We’ve got everything from dinosaur digs to fur trade forts to hands-on ranching experiences. The best part? All of it is within a day’s drive from home.

Let’s talk about convenience. Hopping on a plane or crossing a border means passports, security lineups, currency exchange, and who knows what new travel headaches. But hitting the road in Alberta? No customs, no unexpected fees—just you, your car, and some of the most

breathtaking landscapes in the world. (And if the kids spill snacks all over the back seat, at least you’re not stuck on a five-hour flight with strangers giving you the side-eye.)

Then there’s the cost. Let’s be honest—travel isn’t cheap these days, and with the Canadian dollar doing what it does, why spend extra when you can have a world-class adventure right here? Whether you’re looking for a budget-friendly camping trip, a weekend in a cozy mountain lodge, or a festivalpacked city escape, Alberta delivers unforgettable experiences without the sticker shock. Plus, some local attractions and destinations offer discounts for Albertans—like special rates at Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge—so you can explore your own backyard for less.

And don’t get us started on variety. Feel like stargazing in a Dark Sky Preserve? We’ve got multiple. Want to walk on a glacier? Easy. In the mood for world-class museums, epic music festivals, or the best dinosaur museum in the country? Alberta’s got it all. You can ski and golf in the same weekend, soak in hot springs, explore massive caves, or ride the rails on a historic train.

The truth is, you don’t have to go far to find something extraordinary. Whether it’s a full-on summer road trip, a last-minute weekend getaway, or just a day trip to shake up your routine, Alberta is the place to explore. So load up the car, hit the highway, and start making memories—no passports required.

CANADIAN ROCKIES

Top 5 Must Sees

It’s no surprise the Rockies are Alberta’s crown jewel when it comes to jaw-dropping getaways. Towering peaks, turquoise lakes, wildlife around every bend— it’s basically a postcard come to life. But beyond the classic mountain views, the region is packed with hands-on, family-friendly adventures that turn a simple road trip into an unforgettable experience.

ATHABASCA GLACIER & COLUMBIA ICEFIELD SKYWALK

This is the kind of experience you just can't get anywhere else. Ride a massive Ice Explorer right onto the surface of the Athabasca Glacier, part of the Columbia Icefield, and walk on ice that formed thousands of years ago. Then head to the Skywalk—literally a glass-floored platform hanging over the Sunwapta Valley—for views that will make your stomach flip (in the best way). It's equal parts thrilling and educational, with exhibits about climate change and glacial science that are surprisingly fun for the whole family. ColumbiaIcefield.com

Whether you're strolling on ancient ice, spotting grizzlies from a gondola, or wading through a canyon painted in reds and oranges, there’s no shortage of “wow” moments here. These five picks stand out for their scenery, accessibility, and the fact that kids (and grown-ups) will be talking about them long after the trip is over.

JASPER SKYTRAM

Take the easy way up Whistlers Mountain with this 7-minute ride to the alpine zone—where you’ll be greeted by sweeping views of the town, six mountain ranges, and on a clear day, Mount Robson. Once at the top, there's a well-marked trail leading to the summit for those feeling energetic. It’s a gentle introduction to high-altitude adventure, and a great place for kids to experience the magic of the Rockies without a serious hike. JasperSkyTram.com

JOHNSTON CANYON & THE SECRET CAVE

Banff National Park

WATERTON LAKES NATIONAL PARK –RED ROCK CANYON

Tucked into the southwestern corner of the province, Waterton offers a quieter, often-overlooked mountain escape. Red Rock Canyon is the star attraction: a short drive and an even shorter walk lead you to shallow creeks weaving through vividly coloured rock formations. It’s the perfect spot for wading, rock-hopping, and soaking in a bit of Alberta’s geology in action.

ParksCanada.ca/Waterton

This is one of Banff’s most popular hikes for a reason. A series of catwalks and trails hug the canyon walls, leading you past waterfalls and turquoise pools. The trail is relatively easy and shaded, making it a good option for younger hikers. Adventurous families might also hear whispers about the “secret cave”—a hidden grotto off the main trail. If you go looking, tread lightly and respect nature.

LAKE LOUISE GONDOLA & WILDLIFE CENTRE

A must-do for families visiting Banff National Park. The gondola glides up the slopes of Mount Whitehorn, offering some of the best views of Lake Louise and the surrounding peaks. Keep an eye out—grizzly sightings are common (don’t worry, you’re safely above them!). At the top, visit the interpretive Wildlife Centre to learn about the animals that call this rugged terrain home. SkiLouise.com

JASPER,

A THAN EVERStronger

fter the wildfires of summer 2023, many Albertans have wondered: How’s Jasper doing? The short answer? Still stunning, still welcoming, and still worth the trip. Perhaps even more so, now.

Yes, the fires left their mark. Some areas bear the scars, and Parks Canada continues restoration work. But nature is resilient, and so is Jasper. The town is open, the mountains stand tall, and the wildlife hasn’t gone anywhere (except maybe a little closer to the roads—watch for elk).

The good news? Your favourite spots—Maligne Lake, Athabasca Falls, the SkyTram, and those

cozy downtown cafés—are ready for visitors. Hiking trails remain spectacular. Plus, local businesses could use the support after a tough couple of years.

If you’ve been hesitating, consider this your sign: Jasper is waiting. The air is crisp, the scenery is as breathtaking as ever, and there’s no better way to help a place recover than to show up and experience it.

So pack up the car, hit the Icefields Parkway, and see for yourself. Jasper’s story isn’t one of loss— it’s one of resilience.

CALGARY & AREA

Top 5 Must Sees

Calgary has always been a bit of a shape-shifter. One minute it’s all business and big-city energy, the next it’s cowboy boots and cotton candy on the midway. But for families looking to pack a whole lot of fun, learning, and classic Alberta charm into one region—it doesn’t get much better than this.

The city is home to some of Alberta’s best museums, biggest attractions, and yes, a giant theme park just

outside the ring road. But venture a little farther south and you’ll find working ranches, wide-open prairies, and places where kids can get their hands dirty and their imaginations fired up. Whether you’re based in Calgary or making it your weekend destination, there’s no shortage of things to do with the fam.

Here are five standouts that deliver big on fun, adventure, and memories in the making.

Here, the attractions are refreshingly real. You’ll find history that hums with engines, wild animals

Innisfail

Not your typical zoo, Discovery Wildlife Park is home to rescued animals that can’t return to the wild, including bears, cougars, wolves, and more. The park focuses on education and conservation, offering up-close encounters, keeper talks, and even behind-the-scenes experiences. It’s the kind of place where kids can learn something new and also be totally wowed by seeing wildlife just a few feet away. DiscoveryWildlifePark.com

CANYON SKI RESORT (Summer & Winter Fun)

Red

Yes, it’s a ski hill in winter—but Canyon transforms into an all-season adventure spot. In the summer, you’ll find Alberta’s only alpine coaster, a tubing track, and other gravity-fueled fun. Come winter, it’s a full ski resort with beginner-friendly hills, a terrain park, and rental gear for the whole family. Whether you’re chasing speed or just soaking in the valley views, Canyon is Central Alberta’s go-to outdoor playground. CanyonSkiResort.com

LACOMBE CORN MAZE

(Kraay Family Farm)

Lacombe

This isn’t just a corn maze—it’s a full-on farm adventure. In addition to the massive maze (which changes designs every year), there’s a giant jumping pillow, mini-golf, pedal carts, a petting zoo, and more. It’s hands-on, active fun that’ll wear the kids out in the best possible way. Pro tip: come in late summer or early fall for peak maze magic. KraayFamilyFarm.com

PONOKA STAMPEDE

Ponoka

For one week every summer, Ponoka becomes rodeo central. The Stampede combines pro-level rodeo events with a midway, fireworks, concerts, and a whole lot of cowboy spirit. It’s got the energy of a big-city fair but the friendliness of a hometown celebration. If you’ve never seen chuckwagon races in person—this is the place to do it.

EDMONTON & AREA

Top 5 Must Sees

There’s something satisfying about being a tourist in your own backyard—especially when your backyard happens to be packed with world-class attractions, family-friendly adventures, and a good dose of local charm. Edmonton may be home base for most Alberta 48 readers, but that doesn’t mean we’ve seen it all. In fact, some of the best experiences in the province are right here—or just a short drive away.

FORT EDMONTON PARK

Alberta’s largest living history museum just keeps getting better. With four eras of Edmonton’s past to explore—from the 1846 Fort to the 1920s midway— it’s an all-day immersive experience. The Indigenous Peoples Experience is a must-see on its own: an award-winning exhibit that shares Indigenous stories in powerful and engaging ways. Plus, where else can you ride a steam train, eat bannock, and try an oldtimey Ferris wheel all in one day?

FortEdmontonPark.ca

From immersive historical sites to science centres that make learning feel like play, Edmonton and its surrounding area are ideal for quick day trips, last-minute plans, or full weekends with the kids. These five picks combine hands-on learning, cultural connection, and enough fun to keep everyone—from toddlers to grandparents—fully engaged.

TELUS WORLD OF SCIENCE – EDMONTON

If your kids are the curious, question-asking kind (and let’s face it, most are), they’ll love it here. With galleries dedicated to health, space, robotics, and the environment—not to mention a full planetarium and an IMAX theatre—there’s no shortage of ways to explore the wonders of science. It's educational, yes, but also packed with interactive fun that makes it feel more like an adventure than a lesson. TelusWorldOfScienceEdmonton.ca

EDMONTON VALLEY ZOO

Don’t underestimate this local favourite. The Valley Zoo has been undergoing a big transformation in recent years, with new habitats, upgraded play areas, and a focus on conservation and animal welfare. It’s just the right size for young kids—not overwhelming, but packed with animals to see and things to do. The paddle boats and carousel are always a hit, and the new sections like the Arctic Shores exhibit add fresh excitement. Edmonton.ca/Attractions_Events/Edmonton-Valley-Zoo

UKRAINIAN CULTURAL HERITAGE VILLAGE

Near Tofield

Just east of the city, this open-air museum offers a step back into the life of early Ukrainian settlers in Alberta. With costumed interpreters, traditional buildings, and farm animals on-site, it feels like walking into another century. The whole place is hands-on and interactive—watch blacksmithing demos, taste fresh-made perogies, or help pump water the old-fashioned way. UkrainianVillage.ca

ROYAL ALBERTA MUSEUM (RAM)

Massive, modern, and packed with stories, RAM is Alberta’s flagship museum for a reason. The Natural History Hall is a hit with dino lovers, while the Bug Gallery (live insects included!) is always a crowd-pleaser. The museum also does a great job showcasing Indigenous culture and Alberta’s social history. Bonus: the hands-on Children’s Gallery is basically a dream come true for kids under 10. ALBERTA SOUTH

Top 5 Must Sees

Southern Alberta doesn’t get enough credit. While the Rockies often steal the spotlight, this corner of the province is full of wild beauty, fascinating history, and some seriously cool natural wonders. The landscape shifts quickly down here—from badlands to prairie grasslands to winding river valleys—and you never know when you’ll stumble across a towering hoodoo or a herd of bison.

WRITING-ON-STONE PROVINCIAL PARK

Near Milk River, AB

This place feels like another planet. Towering hoodoos stretch across the landscape, carved by thousands of years of wind and water. But it’s also a deeply spiritual place, home to one of the largest collections of Indigenous petroglyphs and pictographs in North America. You can take a guided tour to learn the stories behind the rock art—or explore on your own. Cool off with a swim in the Milk River and soak in the peaceful beauty of this sacred site. AlbertaParks.ca/Parks/South/WRAS/

It’s also where Alberta’s deep past is on full display. We’re talking ancient fossils, Indigenous heritage sites, and small towns packed with stories. It’s the kind of region that rewards curiosity—perfect for families who like to explore, learn a little, and get their hands (and hiking shoes) dirty.

Here are five standout experiences that make Southern Alberta one of the most surprising and rewarding road trip destinations in the province.

ROYAL TYRRELL MUSEUM

Drumheller, AB

If you’ve got a dino-loving kid (or are one yourself), this is a must. The Royal Tyrrell is Canada’s premier dinosaur museum, and it's absolutely packed with fossils, life-sized skeletons, and interactive exhibits. You’ll come face-to-face with a T. rex, peek into a working fossil lab, and maybe even try a fossil dig if you visit in summer. Educational? Yes. But it’s also just plain awesome. TyrrellMuseum.com

HEAD-SMASHED-IN BUFFALO JUMP

Near Fort Macleod, AB

HOODOOS TRAIL Drumheller, AB

Just outside Drumheller, this short but unforgettable walk takes you through some of Alberta’s most iconic badlands terrain. Towering hoodoos (the kind that look like stone mushrooms) rise up from the earth, and kids will love scrambling around the base—just remember to stay on the marked paths to help preserve them. It’s a great leg-stretcher between stops and perfect for a quick photo op. TravelDrumheller.com

This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a powerful look at the hunting practices of the Plains Peoples, who used the cliffs here for thousands of years to drive and harvest bison. The on-site museum is packed with hands-on displays and exhibits that bring Indigenous history and culture to life. The cliff itself? Still awe-inspiring. It’s a place that sticks with you long after the visit. HeadSmashedIn.ca
