Field Notes w/ Farmer Dean

I hope you all had a relaxing yet exciting 4th of July. I just wanted to give you a little update on the farm now that we are back in the swing of CSA pick-ups. As you know, we have had our ups and downs this year with all of this rain.

We got over 20 inches of rain in June. That obviously had a major impact on what we could get done and how the crops grew. It looks like the pattern is about to change. We should see less rainy weather and a few more warm sunny days. We are waiting with open arms to welcome that kind of weather. Despite the hurdles, our farm team has busted their butts getting things done in the short windows of time we have had.

To give you an example, the Thursday before the week of the 4th, we dried out just enough by 10 a.m to get two transplanting crews in the field. I cultivated and fertilized for about 12 straight hours and by the end of the day, our crews transplanted nearly 20,000 vegetable plugs. Then, the rain showed up and watered in all the new babies. We actually wanted rain for the new plants but really didn't need it for those that were previously planted, such a dilemma.

In addition, we planted another round of lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, zucchini, scallions, melons, basil, and many others that totaled around 15,000 new seedlings in the greenhouse that should be ready to transplant out in the field just a few short weeks from now. As we start to dry out, our little farmer engines are revving. We are ready to work overtime to make the best CSA experience for you.

Thank you for all your support. Enjoy this week's share.

WELCOME TO 2024 CSA - Week 3

(S) - Small Share, (M) - Medium Share, (L) - Large Share

This key indicates which share sizes get what produce. Different share sizes will often receive different produce. We will vary what goes into the share each week to spread the bounty equitably to all members.

There are times when mother nature puts a kink in our plans, so while we can't guarantee that all of these items will be in your share, you can expect to see most of them and sometimes a few extras.

CSA Recipes & Tips featuring Kohlrabi (aka Sputnik)

Chef Dan of the Wise Acre Kitchen shares his insight on maximizing your CSA.

Kohlrabi can be an intimidating vegetable to deal with, but it doesn’t have to be! It’s delicious raw, pickled, roasted, sauteed, grilled - really anything you would do with more familiar vegetables. It has a mild, sweet taste especially when harvested young. The key is to use a knife to peel it, as there is a fairly tough and deep skin on the vegetable.

Simple way to cut your Kohlrabi:

Cut off the top and bottom of the kohlrabi then work your way around the vegetable cutting at a curve to remove that outside layer.

A great way to get the most out of your Kohlrabi is to marinate it with spices and EVOO. I like to do this right when I get my Kohlrabi. This makes it easy to eat and enjoy later as a side dish, on a salad or with a dip.

Here’s an easy spice blend you can make for it.

Sweet Chili Seasoning

1 tsp Ground ginger

1.5 tsp Chili powder

1 Tbsp Paprika

1 tsp Cayenne

1 tsp Cumin

1 Tbsp Garlic powder

1 tsp Onion powder

¼ C Brown sugar

2 Tbsp Salt

1 tsp Black pepper

Combine 1 Tbsp of EVOO and 1 Tbsp of spice blend per Kohlrabi. Mix and marinate for at least 1 hour and up to 5 days. Enjoy!
