C

hicago is the story of Roxie Hart, housewife and night club dancer who murders her lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer, Billy Flynn, to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines. The Tony Award winning revival version (1996) is set in Chicago in the ‘Age of Jazz’ and is the 2nd longest running Broadway musical after The Phantom of the Opera. Winning six Tony Awards in 1997, the musical was cemented into popular culture and elevated to an even higher status when Rob Marshall’s 2002 movie version won an Academy Award for Best Picture. This ‘made in Tamworth’ production, by Tamworth Musical Society, takes a fresh look at this decadent and dazzling time to make Chicago as fun and relevant in 2022.
