COVID has certainly taught us that what we thought mattered doesn’t necessarily matter and what we perhaps took for granted does.

Art & Culture have always played a major part in nourishing and enriching a community’s soul and having that taken away from us, especially live entertainment, during COVID, has made us appreciate that more than ever. At the end of the day, the value of culture comes down to three words: happiness, togetherness and understanding. We all appreciate the value of culture – to our personal happiness, to our connection with community and to our sense of understanding of the world around us. We all engage in some form of culture – be it painting or praying, bushwalking or baking, playing a sport or learning an instrument. Culture is everything. To quote Australian arts leader, Patrick McIntyre, “Once we are fed and sheltered, everything beyond that is culture.”

31 events, made up of local and touring productions, are on offer across the Capitol Theatre, Tamworth Town Hall and TRECC. he Spooky Men’s Chorale is a vast, rumbling, steam powered and black-clad behemoth, capable of rendering audiences moist eyed with mute appreciation or haplessly gurgling with merriment. Based on the twin pillars of grand foolishness and the quest for the perfect ‘boofchord’, the Spooky Men seek to commentate on the absurdity and grandeur of the modern male armed only with their voices, a sly collection of hats, and a twinkle in the eye.

The Spooky Men’s Chorale sing a judicious combination of Georgian table songs, pin drop beautiful ballads highly inappropriate covers, and immaculate man anthems like Don’t Stand Between a Man and His Tool.

A

nnalisa Kerrigan has an acclaimed international reputation, having been based in Florence for a decade. She will entertain you with beautiful songs much loved by Dame Joan Sutherland, Peter Allen and many more.

Navigating many genres of music, including opera, contemporary, classics, musical theatre and folk comes naturally to Annalisa. She has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Australia, enjoyed singing as a soloist with major symphony orchestras and chamber ensembles and has recorded with many Australian artists. Her international touring included The Phantom of the Opera (Christine), My Fair Lady (Eliza), and as a soloist with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

We are indeed fortunate to have Annalisa agree to come back to Tamworth to perform in this exciting one-off show to raise funds for Action on Poverty, an international aid organisation that connects Australians with grassroots projects across Africa, Asia and the Pacific to break the poverty cycle.

n 1997, a BAFTA award-winning British film about six out-ofwork Sheffield steelworkers with nothing to lose took the world by storm. Now they’re back, live on stage, and for them it really has to be The Full Monty.

Two powerful yet forgotten Australian stories uncovering our past to reveal who we are today.

TARDUST tells the story of bandleader and trumpet player, Col Brain. Before he died, Col placed his most prized life possessions into a cupboard and locked it up, never to be opened again.

But what was inside? Told through the eyes of his grandson – award winning ABC presenter & performer, Joel Carnegie – herein lies the discovery of a time capsule of Australian musical life, in a heartwarming quest to uncover what Col wanted us to know about his life by the things he left behind.

THE MISSION follows the journey of “Fighting Gunditjmara” man, Allan McDonald – one of the first Aboriginal soldiers from Victoria to enlist for war. He fought at Gallipoli and Beersheba, only to be denied a soldier’s settlement on his ultimate return to Australia and forced from his land at the Lake Condah Mission. This captivating and rollicking story, told by his great, great nephew, acclaimed Gunditjmara man Tom Molyneux, tells the truth of Uncle Allan’s struggle; fighting for Country, for love, and for justice.

Experience this award-winning double bill, featuring a combined regional brass band drawn from the Tamworth RSL Brass Band and the Gunnedah Shire Band, and meet two ordinary individuals, whose extraordinary lives still reverberate to this day.

Recommended ages 15yrs+. Warning: includes adult themes, coarse language, smoke and scenes depicting war and violence. The Mission contains depictions of, and reference to, Aboriginal people who have passed away. It also describes confronting content in relation to the massacre, dispossession, and mistreatment of First Nations Peoples.

This is a story of strength, resistance, hope and possibility.

ver 150 years ago, 13 brave Aboriginal men in Western Victoria picked up their cricket bats and embarked on a treacherous voyage to England and into the unknown – all in the name of sport. Risking illness and persecution, Australia’s first international cricket team – including Australia’s first Indigenous sporting hero, Johnny Mullagh – amazed the English crowds with astonishing talent, personality and grit. They should have returned to Australia as celebrated heroes. Instead they came back to find the world they once knew was no longer there.

This is not just a story about cricket – this is story of strength, resistance, hope and possibility. When a group of young presentday activists sneak into the Wimmera Discovery Centre to expose the truth of what happened to Johnny and his team mates, a hidden legend of triumph and tragedy unfolds. elix Mendelssohn’s overture to Victor Hugo’s play Ruy Blas skilfully sets the stage for a dramatic and tragic tale, with a brooding opening that quickly finds its feet with an energetic melody, before sweeping into a spirited finale. It’s a curtain raiser that’s sure to delight.

The mood continues with Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto. It’s a rare chance to hear a trumpet take the lead as a solo instrument and just as rare to hear Sydney Symphony’s brilliant and renowned Principal Trumpet, David Elton, bring this unique composition to life.

In his Symphony No.8, Dvořák digs into his Czech heritage.

Before Margaret Fulton burst into the nation’s kitchens in 1969 with her burnt orange crockpots and chunky stoneware serving dishes, encouraging housewives to try their hand at Nasi Goreng and Apricot Chicken, Australian food was bland, boring and British, or overly fussy, fancy and French!

The Margaret Fulton Cookbook encouraged Australian housewives to experiment with more interesting ingredients, straying from the old tradition of meat and three veg.

This delightful musical romp follows her journey from humble beginnings to super-stardom.

Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate Velma Kelly, by hiring Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer, Billy Flynn, to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines.

The Tony Award winning revival version (1996) is set in Chicago in the ‘Age of Jazz’ and is the 2nd longest running Broadway musical after The Phantom of the Opera. Winning six Tony Awards in 1997, the musical was cemented into popular culture and elevated to an even higher status when Rob Marshall’s 2002 movie version won an Academy Award for Best Picture.

dward is bored with his lot. Being the only emu at the zoo has left him feeling glum and under the impression that the grass is greener in everyone else’s enclosure. Maybe being a seal, or a lion, or a snake might be a better option in life for a lonely bird? Convinced that the other creatures are more popular, Edward breaks ranks and goes to find the fun and along the way, finds Edwina!

We follow the emus as they hilariously navigate their own feathered existential crises, seeking to find their place in the world. Meanwhile, unaware of the birds’ internal worlds, their human keepers are in hot pursuit to restore order to the zoo.

ADFAS Tamworth Region 2022 Lectures ADFAS societies present a series of quality lectures by leading UK and Australian experts. Each lecture is followed by light refreshments and a convivial social forum.

4 March – Geoffrey Edwards

Streams of Fire and Tongues of Flame – A Short History of the Art of Glass In this illustrated lecture, the ancient and remarkable history of glass as an art form is traced with reference to works in major public collections including the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.

The lecture also refers to glass-related imagery and symbolism in the visual arts, film and literature – a tradition that ranges in time and type from biblical allusion and Chaucerian dream visions of glass temples through to the novels of Daphne du Maurier, the films of Orson Wells, the poetry of Les Murray and recent science fiction.

Tamworth Tales: Digitisation Discoveries In June 2021 Tamworth Regional Council started an ambitious project to digitise local cultural collections, made possible by funding from the NSW Government’s Regional Cultural Fund. Along the way, collection objects revealing fascinating local stories were uncovered.

Learn about some of the most significant and revealing finds made while digitising the collections from Tamworth Regional Gallery, Australian Country Music Collections, Tamworth Regional Film and Sound Archive, Tamworth Powerstation Museum, Moonbi Museum and Rocks, Gems, Minerals and Fossil Collections.

13 May – Peter McPhee

Jean-Francois Millet Paints the French Countryside Jean-Francois Millet settled in Barbizon after the French Revolution of 1848 and left a rich and evocative legacy of images of labour, landscape and family life. The peasant households’ routines of spinning, caring for livestock, harvesting, baking bread, and carting water and wood are captured in images which resonate with respect for rural toil. Some of his paintings such as The Angelus are among the most reproduced paintings of all time. But who was Millet? And did he simply detail the rural world he saw around him as he claimed, or did he create an imaginary world?

Fragile Beauty in a Changing Climate Since time began, we have used plants for food, for shelter, in gardens, for medicine, for decoration, to build homes, bridges, ships and so on. Plants are fundamental to our well-being. Plants are robust, but they are also fragile, and increasingly they suffer from our constant and thoughtless forays into their habitats. So over the years, botanical art has reinvented itself many times in response to the needs of the age in which it was being created. Today, botanical artists work to educate people about the importance of plants as fragile beauties in a changing climate.

The Seven Wonders of the Ancient World For the Greeks, to see the marvellous was to touch the divine. The Greeks loved stories about fabulous works of nature and feats of engineering, and compiled many lists of “must see” monuments. This lecture focuses on the most famous of these catalogues of marvels, the Seven Wonders of the World. It describes the various monuments on this list and why they were so important. It also looks at the mentality of the ancient tourists who visited them and the industries that grew up to support tourism.

Art Deco Sydney: A Persistent Presence From an incinerator designed by Walter Burley Griffin to the local cinema, pub and milk bar, Art Deco design was not limited to the elegant office buildings of bustling downtown Sydney of the 1930s.

Sydney’s smart set were early adopters embracing the style at every level. Join Claudia Chan Shaw for an exploration of Art Deco Sydney, a visual culture defined not only through architecture, but also through graphic and interior design, the decorative arts and photography.

The World on show – the world’s fair and the role of the international exhibition…

Most people will have heard of the ‘first World Expo’ that was held in Joseph Paxton’s stunning Crystal Palace in London in 1851. The Great Exhibition, as it is often called, was a showcase of art-anddesign education, international trade and relations, and tourism.

The concept of international exhibitions originated in the French tradition of national exhibitions; a tradition that culminated with the French Industrial Exposition of 1844 held in Paris. This highly successful event would be followed by other national exhibitions in continental Europe and the United Kingdom and around the world including the colonies of Australia. This lecture will examine the evolution of the world expo, the showcase for products, exchange of ideas and national promotion.

14 October – Robert Ketton

Learn the lines and don’t fall over the furniture The title of this Lecture comes from the great Noel Coward. It was his advice to a young actor. But there is more to acting than that!

With thirty-five years of lecturing in acting, Robert explodes the myth of ‘truth in acting’. Using performance he will demonstrate the importance of observation, imagination and concentration when bringing a character to life. Robert also looks at the way in which acting techniques are used by our politicians, preachers and con men to persuade cajole and hector us into doing what they want.

Today celebrities have an undue influence on public debate and Robert looks at why actor training has helped them to become a potent force in today’s society.

11 November – Richard Morecroft

On Interviews with Artists Richard Morecroft started his career as a TV broadcaster and is best known for his time as the news reader for the ABC. More recently Richard has been involved with the Australian Artworld. He has developed a series called Interviews with Artists, where he speaks with them about their art practice and current exhibition. Richard has a way of getting artists to ‘open up’ about their work and what motivates them to keep going. Richard will talk about some of the more interesting artists he has interviewed and what makes them stand out.

The price of a Subscription Package is determined by how many shows you attend.

You must pick 5 or more paid shows to access the discount and once you’ve selected your shows online, the system will tally it for you. A transaction fee of $5.50 will apply.
