Meet the guest editor
Dear Tampa Bay Parents,
I’m honored to serve as your guest editor for this month’s issue of Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine. For over four decades, my mission has been to build a community of safer swimmers right here in Tampa Bay. With Florida leading the nation in accidental drownings, that mission has never been more urgent – or more personal.
At Watermelon Swim, we are committed year-round to advancing water safety education across our community. Each May, we’re proud to raise our voices even louder during National Water Safety Month, a nationwide campaign dedicated to highlighting the importance of water safety and drowning prevention. Drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4. However, formal, continuous swim lessons can reduce that risk by up to 88%. In short: Swim lessons save lives.
As a third-generation swim instructor, my journey in the water began early. I was raised in a family immersed in the world of swimming. My grandparents moved to Florida from Chicago and brought with them a passion for aquatic education, running swim lessons out of Wall Springs, a natural spring. That torch was passed to my mother, who continued teaching lessons in our own backyard. By 1980, I joined her in the water as an instructor, and eventually carried the family legacy forward, building what is now Watermelon Swim.
Today, we operate five locations across Tampa Bay, with two more in development. We proudly teach an average of 7,000 swimmers per week – a reflection of the growing recognition of how critical water safety truly is. We also deliver free water safety presentations to thousands of children in local schools and community organizations, including many in underserved areas.
It’s never too early (or too late) to learn how to swim. Everyone deserves access to life-saving water safety education, and we remain deeply committed to our mission of making that a reality.
Visit us at watermelonswim.com to learn more and take the first step on your family’s swim journey.
Swimcerely,
Micha Seal

Make a Memorable Mother’s Day Brunch with the Kids
by Dani Faig, danifaig.com
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to mean a fancy, stress-filled brunch. This year, let the kids get hands-on in the kitchen and show Mom just how much she’s appreciated by creating a heartwarming morning with simple, fun and delicious recipes the whole family can enjoy. From oatmeal pancakes to yogurt parfaits and fruity mocktails, these easy recipes are sure to bring big smiles and make Mom feel truly loved.
OATMEAL PANCAKE ART
Who says pancakes have to be boring? These easy, homemade oatmeal pancakes are not only healthy and delicious, but they're the perfect canvas for creativity! Let kids make shapes like hearts, stars or even funny faces using a squeeze bottle or spoon. Once cooked, top with Mom’s favorite fruits, a swirl of whipped cream or a sprinkle of chocolate chips.

INGREDIENTS
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup milk (dairy or plant-based)
1 egg
1 ripe banana
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon baking powder
Pinch of salt
Optional toppings: fresh fruit, chocolate chips, maple syrup, yogurt, whipped cream

3. Add toppings and serve!
PRO TIP: Let each child create their own pancake masterpiece! You’ll end up with a pancake gallery that makes the perfect Mother’s Day photo-op.

FRUIT SKEWERS
This colorful, no-cook treat is a winner for both little hands and big hearts. Let the kids assemble fruit skewers with a variety of fruits — think strawberries, grapes, pineapple and kiwi. For a bonus, drizzle them with a little chocolate or honey for an indulgent finish.
INGREDIENTS
Wooden or reusable skewer sticks
Fruit: strawberries, grapes, pineapple chunks, kiwi, blueberries, watermelon
Optional drizzle: chocolate syrup or honey
QUICK PREP

FUN TWIST: Spell out “MOM” with fruit or arrange skewers in a heart shape on the serving tray.

HEART-SHAPED TOAST
Transform ordinary toast into an adorable Mother’s Day treat by using a heart-shaped cookie cutter. Have your little chefs toast the bread and then spread on delicious toppings like peanut butter, jam or avocado. Add sliced fruit in sweet shapes for a finishing touch.
INGREDIENTS
Whole grain or sourdough bread
Spreads: peanut butter, cream cheese, avocado or jam
Fruit: strawberries, bananas, blueberries
QUICK PREP
1. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter on bread slices.
2. Toast slices until golden.
3. Let kids spread their topping of choice and decorate with fruit slices for a cute, delicious treat.

INGREDIENTS
Vanilla or Greek yogurt
Granola

PARFAIT PERFECTION
No cooking required but still delicious! Set up a DIY parfait bar with yogurt, granola, fresh berries and other fun toppings the kids love. The best part? Kids can layer it however they like, mixing and matching. It’s like a mini art project you can eat!
Fresh berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
Optional toppings: honey, mini chocolate chips, sprinkles
SPARKLING “MOM-OSA” MOCKTAILS
It’s not a celebration without a fun drink! Let the kids mix up some sparkling “Mom-osas” using fresh orange juice and a splash of sparkling water. Add some fresh fruit like berries or slices of citrus, and voilà — Mom’s drink is ready for a toast!
INGREDIENTS
Fresh orange juice (or other juice: mango, peach, cranberry)
Sparkling water or lemon-lime soda
Fresh fruit: orange slices, berries, mint leaves
Ice (optional)
QUICK PREP
1. Fill a glass with 2/3 juice and 1/3 sparkling water.
2. Add ice and garnish with fruit.
BONUS IDEA: Set up a "Mom-osa" bar with multiple juice options and colorful garnishes so each child can create their own special version.
PRO TIP: For a sweet version, try cream cheese with strawberry slices and a drizzle of honey. A BRUNCH TO REMEMBER
QUICK PREP
1. Set out ingredients in small bowls.
2. Let kids layer yogurt, granola and fruit into cups or jars.
3. Top with their favorite extras and serve chilled.

FUN IDEA: Have kids label each parfait with a cute note like, “You’re the berry best, Mom!” or “Made with love by [child’s name]” for a sweet, personalized touch.
The best part of this Mother’s Day brunch isn’t just the delicious food; it’s the laughter, the mess and the memories you’ll create together in the kitchen. With these easy, kid-friendly recipes, your Mother’s Day brunch will be special and full of love. Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms out there!

MOSI’s Digital Dome Theatre Opens with First Field Trip

With eyes looking up and jaws dropping down, students from Hillsborough County Public Schools became the first to experience the brand-new Digital Dome Theatre at MOSI, Tampa’s Museum of Science & Industry, during its grand opening.
At the drop of a purple ribbon, students from Tampa’s Forest Hills, Lewis and Shaw Elementary Schools took their seats inside the massive theatre, tilting their heads back to take in the towering, 10,000-square-foot screen.
Retired NASA Astronaut Nicole Stott, who grew up in Clearwater, spoke to the students about their limitless potential.
“We have, right now, future astronauts, right here in Tampa Bay,” Stott said. “And not just
astronauts, but designers, engineers, nurses and artists – all waiting to discover what’s possible for them. And I’m so excited that we can do that here in this amazing space.”
A NEW ERA OF IMMERSIVE LEARNING
MOSI admission includes one show inside the theatre, with additional shows available for just $5 each. Each experience begins with a live tour of the night sky led by a MOSI astronomer, followed by a 30-minute, 360-degree movie that transports audiences to outer space, the ancient past and beyond.
The Digital Dome Theatre is now home to MOSI’s Saunders Planetarium, which previously had space for just 46 guests. The new theatre has more than 330 seats, dramatically expanding options for families and field trips, making

science more accessible and aweinspiring than ever.
Thanks to cutting-edge 8K projection technology, the theatre’s visuals are sharper, brighter and more immersive than the film-based system last used in 2017.
A LANDMARK FOR TAMPA’S UPTOWN
Beyond its daily shows, MOSI’s Digital Dome Theatre will host laser light shows set to music, academic presentations, corporate events and even weddings.
The theatre’s transformation was no small feat. Over 13 weeks in fall 2024, crews installed the massive eight-story-tall NanoSeam screen. In early 2025, 10 powerful Christie digital projectors were added,

followed by months of testing before the grand opening.
“This project solidifies the fact that MOSI is here to stay as an anchor in Tampa’s Uptown region,” MOSI CEO John Graydon Smith said. “We’re proud to be the first of many transformational projects happening here in this neighborhood.”
With its doors now open, MOSI’s Digital Dome Theatre is set to inspire and educate for years to come. Tickets and showtimes are available at mosi.org.
GIANTS, DRAGONS. & UNICORNS.
Could magical unicorns, massive sea monsters and firebreathing dragons have been inspired by real animals? Find out starting May 17 at MOSI.
In “Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures,” explore the fossils and living animals that may have led to these long-lasting legends. Weave through the tenacles of a huge kraken, compare dinosaur fossils to dragons and touch a narwhal tusk (a possible origin for tales of unicorn horns). Organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the exhibit is included with MOSI admission.

LET’S SEE!
A New Eye-Opening Exhibit at Glazer Children's Museum
by Kate White

Soon, you can step inside “Let’s See,” an exciting new exhibit at Glazer Children’s Museum, presented by Glazer Vision Foundation. Opening May 24, this vibrant, bilingual (English and Spanish) exhibit invites families to explore the science of vision through hands-on, mind-bending experiences.
Discover how your eyes work with playful interactives that bring light, color and perspective to life. Mix colors on spinning wheels, walk into a giant kaleidoscope and cast dazzling colored shadows. Peer through a water sphere to see the world flipped upside down – just like your eyes do before your brain flips it back! Try on glasses, test for color blindness and watch your pupils dilate as you explore how we see the world.
“Let’s See” is a vision-focused interactive adventure with a powerful mission: to educate families about eye health and help kids get the glasses they need. Don’t miss this eyeopening experience only at Glazer Children’s Museum!

A Clear Vision for the Future
Glazer Vision Foundation and Glazer Children’s Museum share a common goal: to uplift the children and families in Tampa Bay. “Let’s See” uses the power of play to spark curiosity about vision, turning hands-on fun into a learning experience that makes a real impact. Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, Glazer Vision Foundation chair, speaks more about this partnership.
KW: Why is vision health such an important focus for the Glazer Vision Foundation?
DGK: When my father was young, he received his first pair of glasses and felt that his gift of clear vision had an immediate positive impact on his life. My family created the Mobile Vision Clinic to honor his legacy by giving free screenings and glasses to underserved children in need of this care. One in four children experience vision problems and one in five are unable to afford eye care. It was important to us to go directly to Title 1 schools in the Tampa Bay region to provide children with the services and glasses they need to help them reach their full potential.
KW: How does “Let’s See” support your mission?
DGK: The “Let’s See” exhibit encourages children to explore and learn about their vision through fun, interactive displays and exhibits. It highlights the importance of taking children for annual eye screenings because many children aren’t aware of their vision issues, and this can negatively affect learning and development. The exhibit also features our community mission project, #oneshareonepair. This is a selfie station providing opportunities for kids and caregivers to provide a child with a free eye screening and glasses for every selfie that’s posted. It’s a great way to empower children visiting the exhibit to help other children in need.

KW: What do you hope families take away from this exhibit?
DGK: My family was very intentional in creating an artistic and joyful exhibit to make learning about vision health fun and enjoyable. Approximately 60% of children with learning difficulties have undetected vision problems that can easily be misdiagnosed as behavioral or learning issues, yet 80% of all vision impairment can be prevented or cured. We’ve provided 100,000 eye screenings and over 20,000 glasses to local children in need, but we must continue to educate and shed additional light on this issue so that more children get their eyes checked every year.

Discover the Wonders of Wetlands at Great Explorations
by Kim Stockton

Great Explorations
Children’s Museum is proud to debut Wonders of Wetlands, a brand-new interactive exhibit made possible by Tampa Bay Water. Designed to engage young minds and spark environmental curiosity, this immersive experience brings one of Florida’s most vital ecosystems to life inside the museum.
Wetlands play a critical role in our environment, especially here in Florida. They naturally filter water, recharge our aquifer, provide flood protection and are home to countless species of plants and animals. Through hands-on learning and play, Wonders of Wetlands helps children understand how these unique habitats work and why they matter.
The exhibit features several key components, including a large wetland terrarium that visually represents the relationship between the environment and our water supply. Kids can create their own rainstorm to explore how the aquifer is replenished and see how water travels through the wetland system before arriving at our taps. The interactive model highlights the importance of conservation and the role wetlands play in keeping our water clean and safe.
Another highlight is the water filtration display, which simulates how pollutants are naturally filtered out as water passes through soil and rock layers. Children can experiment and
observe the effects of pollution and see how wetlands act as nature’s filter.
To help make these concepts come alive, the museum has introduced new animal ambassadors to its Living Collection. Guests can meet species that live in and around Florida’s wetlands, including a corn snake and a green tree frog.
“Florida’s wetlands are home to some truly amazing animals, and we're excited to introduce visitors to a few species they can meet right here at the museum,” says Krista Foster, Great Explorations’ Living Collection Specialist.
“These native critters help tell the story of why wetlands are so important to our state’s biodiversity.”
Through this new exhibit, Great Explorations is helping children connect the dots between the environment, their daily lives and the future of our planet.
“Wetlands are one of Florida’s most vital ecosystems,” says Angeline Howell, CEO of Great Explorations. “With Wonders of Wetlands, we’re giving children and families the chance to explore these natural treasures up close and learn why protecting them matters for the future of our environment and our communities.”
The Wonders of Wetlands exhibit is included with regular admission and is recommended for children of all ages. Whether you are a parent, educator or caregiver, this exhibit offers an engaging way to inspire environmental awareness and spark curiosity in the next generation.
When Accidents Happen, Preparedness is Key
Watermelon Swim to the Rescue: A Family’s Survival Thanks to Swim Lessons
by Laura Byrne

May is National Water Safety Month, but in Florida, where we are surrounded by water and bask in year-round beautiful weather, water safety is something we need to practice every day.
You could say our children’s lives depend on it.
Drowning is the leading cause of preventable death among children under the age of 5 in our community, and it can happen in a matter of seconds. But we can take steps to prepare for and prevent such accidents.
Adam and Rachel Kornicki of Tampa learned this from a dramatic experience this past summer while on a boat ride in Mexico with their daughters Abby, 4, Eliza, 2, and their 8-year-old nephew.
We met up with the Kornickis and Watermelon Swim owner Micha Seal at their Lutz location to hear their story, a testament to the power of swim and water safety lessons.
TBPM: Tell us about your boat tour.
Adam: Everything was looking good. [The tour guide] was telling us about the animals we could see – turtles, sharks and fish. [Then] we noticed that we started slowing down. And we were like, ‘Oh, maybe he's just going to show us some more,’ but eventually, the boats started slowing more and more, and water started coming into the boat.
The guide was a young guy, had no clue what to do. My wife was like, ‘Do you have a whistle? Do you have a walkie-talkie? Do you have a foghorn? Do you have a flare? Do you have a phone?’ He had no way to communicate! We didn't have our phones on us either. Luckily, we did have life vests on. As the boat began to capsize, we had no choice but to jump in the water.
TBPM: How did the kids handle this?
Adam: This is where Watermelon Swim comes in because Abby just dove in like a dolphin and was calm as a cucumber. I decided to swim to the other side of the boat where Rachel was with Eliza and our nephew, and just as I got to them, the boat completely capsized.
Rachel: My foot was stuck in the sail ropes. I'm holding Eliza. She was really nervous while we were stressing out as it was tipping, but once we hit the water, she really calmed down, which was amazing to see. She was floating in her life vest and I had her, my nephew had me – and then my leg was being pulled under!
Adam: I had to leave Abby to swim by herself. She was treading really well. Abby was just a rock star in the water. I freed Rachel's leg. We were able to get away from the sailboat, and we were just screaming for help. Thank God, a boat from a different resort just happened to see us.”
TBPM: This must have been terrifying as a parent.
Rachel: It was just so intense.
Adam: The first thing we did when we got back that next weekend, we went to Watermelon Swim. I went to Julia, one of the workers, and I said, “Thank you so much for all you do.”
TBPM: Micha, when you heard how confident the girls were in the water while Adam freed Rachel’s leg, what was your reaction?
Micha: The thing is, you're never expecting an accident or emergency. So when you prepare over and over and talk about water safety, you hope that when an emergency happens, it becomes second nature.
TBPM: How do you instill this lesson of preparedness here?
Micha: With each lesson, we talk to the parents and children about water safety. Everything we do isn’t just about swimming—it’s a full approach: water safety, survival, and swim. Because we don’t plan for accidents, how you respond to them is what truly matters.
Micha’s Ring of Safety Reminders:
SUPERVISION: Always designate a water watcher when kids are near water, and avoid distractions like cell phones and reading.
BARRIERS: Install a pool fence and add alarms to doors leading out to the pool.
SWIMMING LESSONS: Kids can start lessons as soon as their umbilical cord falls off!
CPR AND FIRST AID: Sign up for a CPR and first aid class so you are prepared when an accident happens.
TBPM: You also encourage parents to set up a “Ring of Safety.”
Micha: I always talk about creating a Ring of Safety around your children. That includes supervision, barriers, swim lessons, and CPR/first aid. You need all those elements to be ready when the unexpected happens.
TBPM: What’s the right age to begin teaching water safety?
Micha: We start our Water Babies program as soon as the infant’s umbilical cord falls off—it’s free until the child is six months old. Then we offer parent-tot classes and beginner classes for children 18 months and up. We also teach adults because it’s just as important that they know how to swim. At Watermelon Swim, you're never too young or to old to learn to swim! The Kornickis’ accident could have ended very differently. It’s a powerful reminder: drowning doesn’t just happen in pools. Accidents can happen anywhere there’s water. And as parents, we need to know what to do.
The Kornickis’ boat accident could have been a very different experience for their girls, and it’s a lesson for all of us that drowning doesn’t only happen in pools. Accidents can happen anywhere there is water, and it’s important that our kids, and we as parents, know what to do.
Drowning Facts:
• Accidental drowning is the leading cause of preventable death for kids under the age of 5.
• Babies, toddlers, and children can drown when adults take their eyes off them in as little as 20 seconds, even if they are nowhere near a pool.
• Formal swimming lessons for kids under the age of 4 can cut the risk of drowning by 88%.
• In 2024, five children died as a result of accidental drowning in Hillsborough County, according to data pulled by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Four were only 1 year old, and one was 3 years old.

Watermelon Swim teaches swim, safety and survival lessons for all ages and abilities across five locations in Tampa Bay. Their mission is to grow a community full of safer swimmers while increasing confidence in and around water.

Watermelon Swim Locations: South Tampa, Lutz, Riverview, Wesley Chapel and Brooksville. They will be adding two new locations in the next two years in Brandon and Zephyrhills.
JulieRemembering Tingley's
Legacy of Love
"When you choose hope, anything is possible.” -Julie Tingley
It feels impossible to be writing these words right now because somehow, by avoiding them, it feels like there is the possibility that you are still here. But you taught us we can do hard things.
We are heartbroken to share the news that Julie Tingley, our incredible Moms to Know and Kids to Know editor, passed away on April 6. The news has shaken this entire community to the core.
The last few weeks have felt like a nightmare that we’ve all been waiting to wake up from. And yet, each morning, we are reminded that there wasn’t enough time with you, and so many words have been left unsaid.
Time is the one commodity we all have that, once given, we can’t take back. We can’t make up for lost time, and we can’t go back in time. It’s this gift of time that Julie gave so lovingly to our community with no expectations of anything in return, always leaving us with a sense of hope.
She was a super mom and super friend and put her all into everything she did, even if it seemed impossible. She turned ideas into reality. It was her superpower.
A community builder, Julie connected 400+ women in a movement that continues today. She followed her passion for uplifting women and children in our community, whether through intimate Seated dinners where meaningful conversations and connections happened or through her nonprofit Wee Macree, which empowered kids to be change-makers in our community. In February, she even launched the first-ever “Brave Hearts, A Rally Against Bullying” in our community. Teaching kindness and empathy was part of her magic.
Julie was also a wizard with words, always speaking and writing from her heart. She shared the stories of inspiring women through the ‘Moms to Know’ page in our magazine, which officially launched six years ago this month. And a few years later, we launched ‘Kids to Know’ with her because it was the youngest generation that inspired her the most.
She loved her family, husband and two daughters so fiercely, but still found a way to make other children feel like they were the center of her world. It was another one of her many superpowers. I don’t know how we move in this world without you in it.
But the reality of time is creeping back in. So, with the time we have left, we honor you and remember you, Julie, for the mark you have left on this community and your legacy that will be carried on through those who love you.
We are praying for strength for her family, whom she loved beyond all measure – her husband Ken, and her incredible little girls, Ella and Kate.
We will never be the same. You made us all better people, and you made this world a better place. We love you, Julie.
-Laura Byrne, and your Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine family

A
for Children

“This little light of mine I’m
gonna let it shine -
There is a special kind of glow that radiates from your soul when you faithfully trust God’s plan for this little life. I am thankful for all it took to bring me back to this place where I feel sunshine from within.
Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.”
-Julie Tingley

In her words
Julie wrote this in 2022, and while she penned these words in memory of her beloved dog, Rocco, it almost feels as if she wrote it for us to read today:
“The moment that you left me, My heart was split in two; One side was filled with memories; The other side died with you.
I now lie awake each night When the world is fast asleep; I take a walk down memory lane With tears upon my cheek.
Remembering you is easy, I do it every day; But missing you is a heartache That will never go away.
I hold you tightly in my heart And there you will remain; Life will go on without you, But it will never be the same.”
"I’m just so grateful that we never stopped believing + we saw the magic in every moment - no matter what."

GIVING KIDS A VOICE.
Julie established the Wee Macree Junior Leadership Board in 2024, with a mission of ‘kids helping kids'. It was a unique approach to put children (ages 7 to 14) at the helm of key decisions like selecting which issues to support and fundraise for. Together, they launched the first-ever 'Brave Hearts: A Rally Against Bullying' in February with the IamMore Foundation to encourage kids to be upstanders and provide resources for families experiencing bullying.
Julie was an incredible writer and storyteller. We’ve talked about her superpowers, and finding a way to reach for the heart and dig deep with people were among them.
“These are the stories I GET to tell… What I love to write about most are stories about the people I know and the things they do!
I see the magic in every single person I meet, which makes getting to learn more about them a gift I give to myself.
These are our neighbors. This is our community. And inside the pages of this magazine … well, that’s where the best kind of magic lives!”

A Champion for Women

A Champion for Nonprofits
Julie was a connector and a friend to everyone. She had a magical way about her that brought women from all different backgrounds together to collaborate and connect through meaningful conversations. She did this when she launched KNOW Women in Tampa Bay and then Seated, a supper club for women hosted at locally owned restaurants in Tampa. “Why introduce a new concept in a city where there is already so much for women? Why invest time doing something without membership commitments, without making it a business, without generating revenue?
Why spend hours serving, hosting, and connecting friends every single month? Why?
I don’t think about it (like that).
I just JUMP.”
-Julie Tingley
Julie didn’t just focus on her own organization, Wee Macree, but she gave her time to several local nonprofits, including the Mommy and Me High Tea in support of Redefining Refuge
In one of her last posts on social, she wrote:
“In honor of Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month (April), Ella, Kate, and I joined @redefiningrefuge and @mommyandmehightea to raise awareness and stand up for every child’s right to feel safe, loved, and protected. These blue pinwheels are a symbol of the bright futures all children deserve.
I’m so very proud to teach my girls the power of kindness, advocacy, and community one pinwheel at a time - especially alongside other women who have committed to making this a priority for our children, too.”
She was also a big supporter of the Girl Scouts and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, where she was a member. Her passion for empowering girls and caring for animals combined during a trip to the aquarium with her troop.

Helping Children Cope With Losing a Loved One
by Maggie Rodriguez, Co-host of Daytime

When I planned this topic for this issue’s article, I couldn’t have imagined that a friend I love and admire would pass away unexpectedly, leaving behind two young daughters. My heart is aching thinking of her girls having to go on without their mom and of her husband, who must process his pain while also being there for his children. While each family’s journey towards healing is unique, experts who work with grieving families offer insights to help navigate it. We spoke with Clinical Social Worker Danielle Wondrak, head of the Blue Butterfly Family Grief Center at Empath Health, which serves children ages 4-18 who are grieving the death of someone special.
TBPM: What advice would you offer a parent who must explain the death of a loved one to their children?
DW: First, I always ask, “Does the child know the truth about how the person died?” My biggest tip is to tell the most honest truth, which is age-appropriate for the child. To do that, you need concrete language, no euphemism. For example, if the child’s grandmother died due to cancer, we encourage the caregiver to say, “Grandma died of cancer,” not, “Grandma was very, very sick and passed.” It is also essential to establish the permanence of the situation. The child needs to understand that when someone dies, they can’t come back.
TBPM: Why is it so important to tell the truth and in an age-appropriate way?
DW: Children need to know the age-appropriate truth because if we don't provide appropriate language, they often make up stories that are way worse than what happened. Providing the facts and truth early on
sets the child up for the ability to begin grieving and start the healing journey. We can’t expect them to start processing appropriately if they don't know the real story. Caregivers often think that keeping the truth from the child is a form of protection, but what we frequently see is that the child begins to resent them when they find out how their person died.
I imagine it will be a long journey towards healing, and it will come with challenges.
Grieving someone you love is normal. Some of the frequent symptoms we see in children are difficulty sleeping, changes in eating patterns, relationships with family and friends, focus and school performance, and mental health.
Sometimes, as caregivers, we don’t have all the answers, and that is okay. Sharing that with your child and seeking information or additional resources is key. Programs like Blue Butterfly at Empath Health are designed to help the caregiver navigate these challenges while prioritizing the child’s grief journey.
TBPM: How does your bereavement program help?
DW: Without proper support, children coping with death may exhibit a range of negative behavioral responses, including depression, anxiety, substance abuse, declining academic performance and, in extreme cases, even suicidal thoughts or actions. At the heart of the program are peer support groups led by masters-level clinical counselors. Children who attend Blue Butterfly benefit from being heard, understood and equipped to cope with their grief, ultimately improving their emotional resilience and mental health.
TBPM: Besides support groups for grieving families, I know that you also host camps just for children. When is the next one?
DW: We are excited to offer Camp Blue Butterfly, a three-day overnight bereavement camp for children ages 9-18 on Sept. 5, 6 and 7 in Manatee County. The camp experience is designed to thoughtfully introduce children to the power of grief support and to explore their feelings in a safe, therapeutic and holistic environment. As with all Blue Butterfly programming, Camp Blue Butterfly is free for children experiencing the death of a special person. We encourage those interested to watch our social media and website for more information and registration.

Why Summer Reading is Crucial in the Age of AI
by Jennifer Jagdmann

Ways to support your child’s summer reading.
Offer variety and choice:
Let kids choose books that excite them! Any reading is valuable, whether it's fantasy, sports, graphic novels or history.
Connect reading to their interests:
Whether your child is in a dinosaur phase, their American Girl doll era or all about sports, find titles that align with their passions.
Make reading social:
Encourage informal book discussions at the dinner table or set up small reading groups with friends. Ask open-ended questions about what your children read, such as “What would you do in this situation?” or “How else could this story have ended?” These conversations can further enhance creative and problem-solving abilities.
Read together:
For younger children or those who struggle with reading, shared reading time can be a bonding experience. For older children, read a book together and have impromptu book chats. Kids are more likely to read when they see their parents and family members enjoying books as well.
Summer is right around the corner! Before we know it, the sounds of the school bus will be replaced by children splashing in pools, riding bikes around neighborhoods and laughing with friends during their precious summer days. While a well-deserved break sounds lovely, parents often worry about the silent challenge that lurks beneath the sunfilled days – the ominous summer slide.
So, how can parents and teachers keep young minds engaged and prevent learning loss during the months before school resumes? The answer is simple: summer reading!
Reading during the summer strengthens critical and creative thinking –skills that are more essential than ever in our fast-paced, AI-driven world. But here’s the challenge: Kids are reading for fun less than ever before. According to the National Assessment of Education Progress, only 17% of 13-year-olds say they read for fun almost every day, a steep decline from 27% in 2012 and 35% in 1984. This shift isn’t surprising, given the endless digital distractions today.
As a mother of two teenagers, I’ve witnessed the shift from excitement over bedtime stories to reading only for school assignments. But last summer, something magical happened. My daughter picked up a book just for fun. I watched her get lost in a fictional world, forming deep connections with the characters. It reminded me why summer is perfect for long-form reading. Whether it’s a novel, biography, historical account or even an in-depth article, summer reading builds stamina, persistence and curiosity.
And in the age of Artificial Intelligence, these skills are more important than ever. Strong literacy and analytical thinking will help our children sift through misinformation, identify reliable sources and critically engage with AI-generated content. Beyond analysis, reading also fuels imagination and empathy. Stories help kids see the world through different perspectives, teaching them to think outside the box, an essential skill in an era of rapid technological change.
Take advantage of local resources:
Public libraries offer fantastic summer reading programs, complete with book lists, events and incentives to keep kids engaged.
At the SXSW Education Conference this past March, futurist Sinead Bovell shared a powerful insight: “Kids need to read more, read for the sake of reading and read in a way that they can come back to school or with their parents and discuss the ideas and have those ideas challenged. Kids need to play more in the age of advanced technologies. The future Steve Jobs of the world, they're not going to come from a corporate cubicle. They're going to come from people that have imagination, that can play freely, experiment and work collaboratively.”
That’s exactly what summer gives our children: time to explore, create and dream. Summer reading is about more than avoiding the summer slide. It’s about preparing young minds for a future where curiosity, critical thinking and creativity will be their greatest assets. Happy reading!

Being and Staying Cool at the YMCA Summer Camp
by Kiran Malik-Khan, senior communications director, Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA
With all its unique offerings, summer camp is a rite of passage; a memory that makes you smile. At the YMCA of the Suncoast and the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, we're ready to help your children and teens create lasting summer camp memories.
Exciting news, the Tampa YMCA will host 2- to 5-year-olds at the newly launched YMCA Preschool Summer Enrichment Program. Running from June 2 to Aug. 8 (the same dates as camps for older children), the program will be hosted at the Central City Family YMCA in Tampa Heights and Camp Sierra in Carrollwood.
YMCA of the Suncoast
“By choosing the YMCA of the Suncoast for summer camp, parents can provide their children with a fun, enriching and memorable summer experience in a supportive community,” explains Beth Gettig, vice president of Youth Development for the Suncoast Y. “We offer wellrounded programs and a variety of activities, including sports, arts, swimming, outdoor adventures and leadership development, ensuring that every child has a chance to explore their interests and build new skills.”
With locations in Citrus, Hernando, Pasco and Pinellas counties, YMCA camps focus on character development, integrating values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility into the summer camp experience. This helps kids grow emotionally and socially while learning important life skills.
“The YMCA is committed to making summer camp accessible to all families,” Gettig says. “We offer affordable rates and financial assistance, so more children can enjoy the benefits of a fun and enriching summer experience.”
Tampa YMCA
“YMCA Summer Camp isn't just play – it’s purpose,” says Matt Lewis, vice president of Operations - Membership/Programs for the Tampa YMCA. “Our Summer Camp offers more than just childcare. It’s a place where kids can truly achieve, relate and belong. Y camps help children set and reach personal goals, whether it’s trying something new, building a skill or completing a challenge. It's about confidence, growth and having fun.”
“Every child is welcomed and celebrated for who they are. YMCA staff are trained in inclusive practices and create a nurturing space where each camper feels seen and valued. Everything is designed to strengthen spirit, mind and body. From fun activities to reflective moments, every experience helps kids become the heroes of their own stories, with the Y guiding their journey.”
In addition, this fun journey entails keeping kids cool in Tampa’s heat, which is crucial for comfort and safety. Hydration is essential, so the Y sets up stations across campuses for easy access. Activities include water play, and are rotated between indoor, outdoor and shaded areas to keep campers cool. YMCA staff are trained to recognize the early signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion to keep campers safe.
Spots are limited. Don't wait; register today. Visit ymcasuncoast.org/letscamp or tampaymca.org/letscamp.

Full Circle at Johns Hopkins All Children’s
A nurse who overcame leukemia as a patient at Johns Hopkins All Children’s is now back on the hospital’s oncology unit, caring for kids who are fighting similar battles.
by Ellen McVay

Two-year-old Shelby is wearing her dinner.
Around here, that’s completely OK.
Lindsey Belcher, R.N., has just breezed into the young patient’s room on the hematology-oncology floor of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.
Shelby is digging into a plate of spaghetti. She’s here for chemotherapy treatment.
But this toddler doesn’t care about all that. She’s just happy to see Lindsey.
“Shelby, girl! How are you?”
Shelby’s face lights up with a spaghetti-sauced smile.
Lindsey steers the pasta into her mouth and moves seamlessly into checking her vital signs as she keeps Shelby in giggles.
There’s no reason this can’t be fun, right?
As a pediatric oncology nurse, Lindsey’s connection to these kids is apparent.
“It lights my heart up to walk into a patient’s room and they’re excited to see me,” Lindsey says.
HISTORY
There’s another reason for this special connection.
In 2007, when Lindsey was 7 years old, she was a patient at All Children’s, battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL).
Lindsey’s family rallied around her, but her medical journey was not easy.
Her father, Charley Belcher, a feature reporter on Fox 13-TV’s morning show, remembers the hardship, but he gained a deep understanding of how clinical staff can make a difference.
“It was the most difficult time in our lives,” Belcher says. “But the care there was so amazing. I described the people there as ‘wingless angels.’”

Lindsey got well, and as she got older, there were career decisions to make.
Could she come full circle — to treat children in the same place she was once a sick child herself?
It all began to make sense.
COMING HOME
Lindsey remembers the first moment as a new nurse when she realized she was right where she was supposed to be. She found herself comforting a young patient.
“I held her hands. I helped her control her breathing, and wiped her tears away,” Lindsey says. “When I left that room, I realized that I had just given to her what others had given to me all those years ago.”
Being a pediatric oncology nurse requires compassion, medical expertise, communication skills and, in the worst of times, the resilience to cope with loss.
Lindsey credits her co-workers for sustaining her.
“I’m surrounded by an amazing work family,” Lindsey says.
DAY IS DONE
Lindsey makes her way down the hall and knocks softly on the door of 7-year-old Samantha (Sami).
Dressed in her pajamas, Sami sees Lindsey and reflexively reaches out for her.
After rocking her gently, they begin to dance around the room.
For a moment, there is no chemotherapy, no pain or fear. Just these friends.
After a little while, Lindsey leaves the patient’s room and moves on down the hall … just one more “wingless angel” doing what she’s meant to do.

A multidisciplinary group that includes skilled, empathetic pediatric nurses and child life specialists also plays a key part. The children are even offered virtual reality goggles and

stuck. That requires other procedures that we perform at Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH.”
But TNE is a game-changer that may prevent the need for that, and help children live normal lives. “Offering procedures like TNE is critical to improve care for our children,” says Nikki Hurley, interim vice president of Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH and TGH Women’s Institute. “Through the collaboration of Muma Children’s Hospital and USF Health, our GI Center of Excellence is leading and transforming the way we care for children in the Tampa Bay region and ultimately

Caring for Teens: Meet Dr. Charisse Graham, Pediatrician and TFHC’s Adolescent Physician
by Sammecia Bagley, Communications Director at TFHC
Navigating the teenage years can be challenging for both youth and their families. At Tampa Family Health Centers (TFHC), we recognize that in addition to routine check-ups, adolescents need a little more. They need a trusted space where they can feel heard, supported and cared for through every milestone, obstacle and question that comes with growing up. That’s why we’re proud to introduce Dr. Charisse Graham, a board-certified pediatrician with additional training in adolescent medicine, who leads our adolescent program with compassion and purpose.
Dr. Graham brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and empathy to our team. A graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana with a degree in chemistry, she earned her Doctor of Medicine from Morehouse School of Medicine. She completed her residency in community pediatrics at Morehouse and pursued a fellowship in adolescent medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she also earned her Master of Business Administration. Her unique training allows her to care for both the physical and emotional needs of teens with a thoughtful, comprehensive approach.
She is especially passionate about early intervention and its ability to shape positive outcomes in a young person’s life. Her commitment to adolescent care reflects a broader vision emphasized by TFHC’s Chief Medical Informatics Officer, Dr. Ashley McPhie.
“As a pediatrician, I’ve seen firsthand how critical the teen years are,” Dr. McPhie says. “We wanted a physician who understands the complexities of adolescents’ health and can also take the time to truly listen and guide them. Dr. Graham brings that rare combination of expertise, empathy and dedication – and our patients deserve nothing less.”
While pediatricians care for patients from infancy through teens, adolescent medicine physicians like Dr. Graham receive training focused on the specific physical, emotional and behavioral needs of teenagers and young adults. This life stage is full of rapid change, not just for teens, but for their parents too. Dr. Graham serves as an ally for both, offering guidance on everything from peer pressure, changes in mood or the body and nutrition. And whether it’s sniffles, sports physicals or something more complex, she’s here for it all. With longer appointment times, she creates space for meaningful conversations, trust-building, and early intervention – making a lasting difference in the lives of young people and the parents who love them.
In addition to clinical care, Dr. Graham is an educator and mentor whose research on teen mental health and eating disorders informs resources that empower both caregivers and adolescents nationwide.

Whether you need help guiding your teen through puberty or managing a chronic condition, Dr. Graham and the TFHC adolescent care team are here for you. Schedule an appointment at 813-397-5300 or TFHC.org and discover the difference that personalized, compassionate care can make.
Our mission is clear: to make healthcare more accessible and effective, especially in the communities we serve. Because at TFHC, we believe in healthcare as it should be – supportive, accessible and made just for you.

A Village of Support
How parenting workshops provide support, education and confidence
by Rosa Ontiveros

In 2024, the Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County (DOH-Hillsborough) hosted a community event, “Moving Maternal Health Forward in 2024” at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County.
The event was open to people working in a maternal and child healthrelated field or those interested in health issues affecting mothers. Approximately 90 attendees, many from local community organizations such as REACHUP, Inc. and Success 4 Kids & Families, participated in the event.
• Maternal Mortality: keynote presentation
• Doulas and Midwives: fireside
• Maternal Mental Health: presentation
• Maternal Care and Support: panel discussion
Local speakers from WIC provided educational materials to attendees, and guest speakers from the University of South Florida (USF) discussed the Tampa Bay Black Maternal Health Week Initiative, which ran from April 11-17.
The event was informative and engaging, with attendees participating in interactive presentations and open mic questions and answers. Many attendees left post-event comments stating that they found the day educational and inspiring, and gained greater knowledge of community resources and a better understanding that more can be done to improve maternal health outcomes.
This year, we are excited to host a community event! Join DOHHillsborough for an engaging and informative day filled with expert speakers, interactive workshops and networking opportunities. This event is perfect for parents looking to enhance their knowledge and connect with others who share their commitment to family health and well-being. Learn about prenatal wellness, safe sleep practices for infants, breastfeeding and more! Don't miss this chance to invest in your family's future and enjoy a day of learning and community bonding. Free giveaways and a complimentary lunch are included. We look forward to seeing you there!
