REMEMBERING WINTER THE DOLPHIN

TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART EXPANSION

Winter the Dolphin’s story inspired millions. There is no doubt her life made a huge impact on Clearwater Marine Aquarium and our community, and her passing has left us all heartbroken. However, we know her legacy will grow as the aquarium continues its efforts to rescue and rehome animals like Winter. You can show your support for CMA by leaving your memories of Winter at rememberingwinter.com or by purchasing experiences at CMA’s holiday store to create lifelong memories with your family.

The Tampa Museum of Art is planning to change the skyline of downtown Tampa with a $68 million expansion set to be complete in 2024. The museum will add a crystalline, four-story structure to the waterfront next to the current building. This expansion will not only add exhibition and event space, but also classroom space, allowing them to quadruple the number of students they serve each year. A CHALLENGE FOR A CHAMPION COMMUNITY 3 Ways to Stake a Stand for Feeding Tampa Bay by Thomas Mantz

Across Tampa Bay, we have grown accustomed to one powerful shared experience: becoming champions. With our local sports teams bringing home victories, we share in what it’s like to be a champion. And yet, one in four children in our region experience hunger, a hurdle no one should have to mount. Hunger impacts more than those who are in need; it’s an “everyone problem.” Lack of consistent access to food has a long-term impact on our community’s future, the future our children will one day inherit as their own. Having access to food is at the core of a healthier community. Ensuring universal access is how we endeavor to end hunger – a feat fit for a champion. At Feeding Tampa Bay, we believe our community’s mindset can transform the region for generations to come. Through our collective action, we prove that we are unstoppable when we stand together. All of us have a responsibility to ensure every child, family and senior in our region has access to food and a brighter future. Ending hunger is a vested interest for us all. Here is how you can stake your stand for a hunger-free community:

WE STAND FOR HEALTHY FAMILIES, FULL BELLIES AND BRIGHTER FUTURES. Food nourishes potential. Consistent, reliable access to nutritious meals helps children focus on school, overcome learning roadblocks and lead healthier lives.

Complementing our school pantries, we believe in education. Our Nutrition Education program teaches the importance of healthy foods and impacts of nutrition, highlighting the powerful effects of long-term healthy eating and providing resources to help families improve their daily diet.

ADVOCATE: Your voice is powerful – imagine the possibilities when united with voices of families across our community! Speak out for neighbors in need by sharing Feeding Tampa Bay’s mission on social media and in conversations with your friends and family. VOLUNTEER: The gift of time is priceless, and Family Night volunteering at our warehouse is a rewarding way to involve your children in serving our community. STAKE YOUR STAND: The most monumental change starts at home. Through Dec. 31, when you donate through our Stake Your Stand webpage, you will help provide meals to neighbors and receive a f lag to proudly display and show how you stand for ending hunger. These efforts ladder up to one tremendous goal: unlocking potential for a brighter future. This movement takes more than f leeting support. It’s a legacy that will cause a ripple effect for generations to come. It starts with you and your family, today.

STAKE YOUR STAND TO TRANSFORM OUR REGION FOR GENERATIONS TO COME. TO LEARN MORE, VISIT FEEDINGTAMPABAY.ORG/STAND.

Feeding Tampa Bay leads initiatives like Feeding Minds School Pantries, which enable access for children and their families on school campuses. With 32 school pantry offerings, kids across our community can focus on just being kids – and parents can rest knowing they have resources to help care for their families.

AS A COMMUNITY OF CHAMPIONS, WE CAN ACT ON OUR COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY TO END HUNGER.

DECORATIONS AT DISNEY THEME PARKS

Best Places to Donate New Toys this Holiday Season by Laura Byrne

TOYS FOR TOTS This U.S. Marine Corps Reserve program collects and distributes Christmas gifts for children of all ages. Donate new, unwrapped toys at any of the drop-off locations in Hillsborough County. To learn more about the Toys for Tots program and locate toy drop-off sites, visit tampa-f l.toysfortots.org.

SALVATION ARMY The Salvation Army Angel Tree is a great way to give to local families and children during the holidays. There are Angel Tree locations throughout Tampa Bay. Visit salvationarmyf lorida.org to find one near you.

SINCERELY SANTA This organization has assisted in providing gifts for more than 100,000 children in our community since 1987. Kids in kindergarten through third grade write a ‘Letter to Santa,’ and families like you help fulfill their wishes along with the needs added by their teachers, such as clothing and gifts for siblings. Letters are displayed at Westfield Brandon; you can sponsor a letter and return unwrapped gifts to the booth at the mall. Gifts will be delivered by local law enforcement and fire departments. sincerelysanta.org

CHILDREN’S HOME NETWORK You can help local at-risk families year-round, but your generosity is always needed during the holidays. While gifts for kids are needed for all age ranges from newborns to teenagers, gifts for teens are most needed. You can shop in person and deliver to Santa’s Workshop on Dec. 13-17, 20 and 21 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. or simply shop their Amazon Wish List. Visit the Christmas Giving section under the ‘How You Can Help’ tab: childrenshomenetwork.org

DOUBLEMINT SITTING: COLLECTING FOR LOCAL FOSTER KIDS

istockphoto.com/ Hachio Nora

Doublemint Sitting is hosting its 3rd Annual Toy Drive to help ensure 350 foster children in our community not only have their holiday wish list answered, but are also provided with necessities like hygiene products and socks. A little backstory on why this is so important to the owners: They both have a very special place in their hearts for foster children. Synthia Fairman was in foster care as a child before being adopted by a great family. She met co-owner Gabriella Rosello while working at a residential group foster home in 2013, and it was at that moment Doublemint Sitting was established. They made a promise to always keep community at the forefront of all they do. If you'd like to be involved, email them at info@doublemintsitting.com letting them know the age, gender and number of children you'd like to help. They will send you a wish list. Gifts may be dropped off at Camp Doublemint at Westshore Plaza in Tampa Monday to Friday from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. before Dec. 15.

METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES HOLIDAY TENT  The Metropolitan Ministries Holiday Tent is expecting to assist more than 33,000 families this holiday season, which is still a drastic increase in demand since before the pandemic. Along with toys for children of all ages, especially teens, non-perishable food items are also a significant need. You can also give your time as a volunteer in the Holiday Tent. Kids as young as 8 can volunteer with their families! If you are still strictly social distancing or short on time, you can also shop the gift and food registries online. Learn more at metromin.org/ holiday-central.

ST. JOSEPH’S CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL  Year-round, St Joseph’s Children Hospital accepts toys, activities and comfort items for children of all ages ranging from infants to teens. Items such as Play-Doh, puzzles, educational games, video games and teethers are just a few of the items on the wish list. For the complete list, visit give2stjoeskids.org. The best way to give is by ordering online through their Amazon wish list and having items delivered to the hospital because in-person gifts cannot be accepted at this time due to the pandemic.

HOPE CHILDREN’S HOME You can shop the general Christmas Wish List online and the gifts will be delivered directly to Hope Children’s Home. Gift cards are another favorite gift because the children often love to go shopping for things they’ll need throughout the year. Learn more by visiting hopechildrenshome.org and selecting “Christmas” under the “You Can Help” section.

JOHN HOPKINS ALL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL  New, unused toys for infants, children and teens can be dropped off in the hospital lobby. You can find their wish lists on Amazon for NICU Nook, Baby Bundles, Kids Corner and Teen Scene. Learn more about items needed at hopkinsallchildrens.org.

OTHER WAYS TO GIVE: Even if donating new gifts isn’t part of the family budget this year, you can ask your children if they want to donate some of their gently used toys they don’t play with anymore. Organizations such as Salvation Army, Goodwill, churches and schools will accept used toys and gifts. After all, giving is in the spirit of the holidays!

Make it Merry!

istockphoto.com/ Hachio Nora

story and photos by Jenny P. @lunchboxmafia

‘Tis the season for warm lunches. I love to pack family classics and comfort foods like soups, rice and beans, pasta and chicken pot pie. I always say, “Packing a hot lunch is like sending a warm hug!” Hi, I’m Jenny and my Instagram page, @Lunchboxmafia, is loaded with easy recipes you can actually make, quick meals and balanced lunches for your kiddos.

Making your lunchbox festive:

h o t p ie w it C hi ck e n p p ie cr us t. ped he a r t sh a

● Cookie cutters are the easiest way to incorporate any theme into your kids’ lunch! ● Add green and red! Grapes, cucumber, celery and kiwi for green, and for red, you can add strawberries, red peppers, cherry tomatoes, raspberries or pomegranate seeds. Get your kiddos to eat their veggies with a cucumber wreath and red bell pepper bow! ● Send festive handwritten notes or stickers that your kiddo will enjoy at lunchtime. It’s a sentiment that I love to include especially around the holidays. Pizza is a go-to for me because my daughter loved it so much, and it’s so versatile to make in so many different shapes. PIZZA CANDY CANES are easy with pepperoni strips and red bell pepper for the festive stripes.

Tips for packing a HOT LUNCH: ● Always prep your thermos with boiling hot water and the lid on. This heats your thermos and will help keep your food hot until lunchtime. ● Reheat rice and pasta with a teaspoon of water and use a lid so that it warms through evenly. ● To add f lavor, use low sodium chicken stock or pasta sauce for macaroni.

Make SNOWMAN FACES on an English muffin with pepperoni for the eyes and mouth. Add a carrot or pepper triangle for the nose! CHRISTMAS TREE PIZZA AND QUESADILLAS can be made in almost any size with cookie cutters.

QUICK CHICKEN POT PIE: Ingredients: (makes 2 servings for 8-ounce thermos) ● 2 tablespoons butter ● 3/4 cup of mixed veggies (fresh or frozen) ● 5-7 tater tots or 1 hash brown ● 1/4 cup chicken (leftover/precooked) ● 1/2 cup of cream of chicken soup or low sodium chicken gravy ● Pie crust or buttermilk biscuit (optional)

Directions: In a nonstick pan, heat butter and add tater tots. Break up your tots (or hash brown patties) as they cook through. Once they are soft, add veggies and chicken. Cook until other veggies are soft. Add half the gravy and cook on low until it’s bubbly and heated through. Pack your thermos while it’s piping hot! Top with pie crust or biscuit. TIP: You can make this the night before or set aside dinner leftovers and reheat in the morning to save time.

SNACKBOARDS are my favorite way to get everyone gathered around the table! They're great between lunch and dinner, grazing before the big holiday shindig or Christmas movie night! TIP: Serve holiday treats together with fruits and veggies or meats and cheese. Let your kids choose what goes on their plate. If they pile on the cookies and candy, add some carrots and crackers. When you make yourself a plate, include a little bit of everything. We should model that all food is good and can be celebrated. It shows our kids they can have a happy, healthy relationship with food. And that's definitely something to celebrate!

CLASSIC FRENCH STRAWBERRY SOUFFLES by The Zakarian Family, geoffreyzakarian.com

Ingredients:

● 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, for brushing ramekins ● ½ cup granulated sugar, plus more for coating ramekins ● ½ cup strawberries, hulled and sliced, plus more for topping ● 1 teaspoon vanilla paste or vanilla extract ● 8 large egg whites, at room temperature ● ½ teaspoon cream of tartar ● ½ cup powdered sugar, plus more for dusting

Holiday Hosting: Tips from the pros by Margaret Zakarian, photos provided by the Zakarian family

Hold on to your hats: The holidays are here! We are two busy working parents with three children, and these are a few of our favorite ways to keep it easy and stress free. DRINK: Put out an oversized metal bowl and fill it with a variety of wines and champagne. Let your guests help themselves and have fun trying different types of wine. It also gets everyone talking and interacting if they don’t already know each other. GIFTING: Opt for a charity donation in someone’s name for a local charity like Metropolitan Ministries. This cuts down on waste like wrapping paper and boxes, saves you time running around and most importantly, does a load of good for others in need. SCHEDULE: We tend to over-schedule ourselves during this time of year, which causes the most stress of all, and we fail to plan time in the calendar to handle the things we need to... hence late nights spent wrapping or crazed errands crammed into a too-short time. Give yourself a hand by blocking out dedicated chunks of time to do these types of tasks. You will be more productive at work and at home and be able to properly accomplish what you need to. HOME DECOR: We always order fun seasonal items from a site called Jamali. Our favorite go-to item is the Julep Cups. They double as silverware holders for a buffet line, a flower vase or even a fun item on a crudité platter to stand veggies upright. These julep cups never fail to dress up the table or room.

● Pastry brush, optional ● 8-ounce soufflé ramekins ● Sheet pan ● Blender ● Silicone spatula ● Stand mixer with whisk attachment

Instructions:

1. Position a rack in the lower part of the oven, leaving plenty of room above for the soufflés to rise. Preheat the oven to 375°F. 2. With a pastry brush or your hands, generously butter the insides of six soufflé ramekins. Add some granulated sugar to each ramekin, and swirl and turn the ramekin to evenly coat the interior with sugar. Place the ramekins on a sheet pan. 3. In a blender, puree the strawberries with the ½ cup granulated sugar. Add the vanilla. Process until very smooth, then scrape the puree into a bowl with a silicone spatula. 4. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, begin to whip the egg whites and cream of tartar on medium speed. Gradually add the powdered sugar. Continue to whip until the meringue is very firm, stands up straight when the whisk is lifted, and the appearance is shiny. This could take 5 to 10 minutes or longer, depending on the temperature of the egg whites. 5. Remove the bowl from the mixer. With the spatula, gently fold half of the strawberry puree into the egg whites. (Reserve the other half for serving.) Divide the strawberry meringue among the prepared ramekins; they should be slightly overfilled. Lightly tap each ramekin against the counter. Decoratively place strawberry slices on top of the soufflés. 6. Place the sheet pan in the oven and bake the soufflés for about 15 minutes, or until very puffy and set. Dust with powdered sugar and serve immediately with the remaining strawberry puree.

Tips:

● Room temperature egg whites whip best. Separate the eggs an hour before starting and leave the whites out on the counter to warm up. ● If you don’t have a stand mixer, you can use a handheld mixer. ● In a stand mixer, egg whites could take approximately 10 minutes to beat. ● Butter is ideal, but nonstick cooking spray maybe substituted to grease the ramekins for a dairy-free option. ● Once ramekins are filled with the meringue, try not to shake or move them too much. ● Leave the oven shut once the soufflés go in. ● Try the recipe again if they do not rise on the first try.

istockphoto.com/ Hachio Nora

COOKING: Make a wow dish! This is the time of year to go for it, and when we like to make a wow, we make soufflés! This is so much fun to do with the children as the whipped egg whites and the rising of the dessert makes it seem like a magic trick. It’s really not that hard to do and is such a fun sweet to serve for Christmas dinner. Check out the recipe from our cookbook, The Family That Cooks Together.

Kid-Friendly

Kwanzaa Celebration story and photos by Karimah Henry @craftingafunlife and Kiva Williams @thefunfoodiemama

Kwanzaa is a non-religious holiday held in the United States on Dec. 26 through Jan. 1 to celebrate unity and ancestry. It was founded in 1966 to help African-Americans reconnect with their African culture and heritage. However, anyone can celebrate this holiday and learn about the importance of the seven principles. They are Umoja or unity, Kujichagulia or self-determination, Ujima or collective work and responsibility, Ujamaa or cooperative economics, Nia or purpose, Kuumba or creativity and Imani or faith. Here are five ways to have a kid-friendly Kwanzaa celebration.

ATTIRE: Kwanzaa is all about celebrating our rich and unique African ancestry. Dress your children in brightly colorful African garments that showcase beautiful tribal patterns. Head to African Extravaganza at 1405 Tampa Park Plaza St. in Tampa for a multitude of patterns and clothing options to choose from.

DECOR: You can’t have a celebration without beautiful decor. Let your kids help decorate your home with Kwanzaa items, including colorful African cloth, a kinara or Pan-African colors (red, black & green). You can also make your own wreaths or garlands.

FOOD: When it comes to parties, finger foods are best for children. I love to use colorful foods like fresh fruit to make eye-catching platters. Since it’s a Kwanzaa party and we’re celebrating Africa, why not include a dessert spread that has cookies shaped like the African continent? Your kids will be sure to love them and it’s a great conversation piece. Have them decorate the cookies for an added fun bonus!

GIFTS: During the Kwanzaa holiday, teaching the children about the seven principles is important, especially UJAMAA (cooperative economics) and KUUMBA (creativity). Showcasing these principles in action by purchasing creative and unique items from a Black-owned store can help demonstrate the principles to the children. As they say, actions speak louder than words! Shop at your favorite Blackowned business this holiday season. We love the fun and kid-friendly options from @jlfuncolorz ( jlfuncolorz.com) and @b.sparked (bsparked.com).

CRAFTS: Get your children involved with crafts by making an easy paper plate kinara. You only need a few supplies for this Kwanzaa art project (paper plate; brown magazine paper cut into squares; red, green and black construction paper; gold glitter paper; scissors and glue). Have your child cut the paper plate in half, then glue brown magazine pieces on one half of it. Make the candles by cutting 3 strips of red and green paper and one longer strip of black paper. Cut out the f lames using gold glitter paper, and glue f lames to the one end of each of the 7 candles. Finally, glue the candles behind the paper plate starting with red, black and then green. If you want more craft ideas, make sure to visit craftingafunlife.com.

Meteorologist Denis Phillips Spreads Christmas Cheer for A G ood Cause by Brie Gorecki, photos provided by Denis Phillips

It might not snow in Tampa, but local weatherman Denis Phillips can certainly create a whimsical winter wonderland. The local ABC Action News meteorologist is known for his cheery persona, signature suspenders and love of Diet Dr. Pepper. During hurricane season, his famous slogan “Rule #7” can be heard on repeat from residents referring to his lists of storm updates (for those not in the know, “rule #7” means no freaking out about the storm unless he tells you to). Though Phillips spends his days forecasting the weather, when the holiday season kicks in, he turns into weatherman extraordinaire-turned-Clark Griswold. His Palm Harbor neighborhood, Indian Trails, comes alive with a dazzling display of lights and holiday decorations. Along with the festive scenery, the Phillips family also seizes the opportunity to benefit the community.

Along with his wife Robyn and their six children ranging from ages 7 to 28, Phillips sells hot chocolate and popcorn to raise money for charity. Although their neighborhood has been donning over-the-top Christmas decorations for nearly 40 years, the Phillips family added fundraising to the festivities five years ago when their son, Jake, was setting up a fundraiser as a project for school. Since then, they have kept the tradition going, with proceeds going to the Children’s Miracle Network and Feeding Tampa Bay. Even though last year looked different due to Covid, they still had cars lined up for 45 minutes to see the lights and give donations. This year, Phillips says he’s excited to welcome visitors back in person. They will have hot chocolate and popcorn for sale, as well as 200 “Rule #7” themed tumblers and windshield decals, which were both created by Robyn. The proceeds from all the sales will go towards the charities. The lights and decorations are up all season, but the fundraiser takes place over two Saturday nights in the middle of December. Visitors come from all around the Tampa Bay area to take in the enchanting scenery and get into the holiday spirit. While some choose to drive by, many people prefer to park and walk around. “It’s more enjoyable to take the time out to stop and see it,” Phillips says. It’s also a community effort. Neighbors donate hot chocolate to be sold, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office helps control the flow of traffic, and volunteers help run back and forth to the cars to deliver hot chocolate and collect donations. And it’s not just the Phillips’ house that’s covered top to bottom in holiday cheer. The whole neighborhood participates, turning the suburban neighborhood into a festival of lights. While the street may look like quite the spectacle, Phillips says they don’t do it for the attention. “We just love Christmas. Everybody’s got a smile on their face. It’s the highlight of my year.” He welcomes visitors to come up and say hello, take a selfie, and cheers with a cup of hot chocolate. The lights on the Phillips house are synced to music and there are decorations up and down the street for people of all ages to enjoy all month long. However, weekends can still be quite busy. “If you want to avoid the traffic, definitely come during the week,” he says. Though Christmas is obviously a big deal in his household, Phillips says his favorite holiday tradition takes place on New Year's Eve and is carried down from his dad. “At midnight, everyone takes a penny from the previous year, has a cracker with a sardine, and a glass of champagne. The pennies are then taped to the outside of the door in hopes of good fortune and prosperity.”

This year’s hot chocolate fundraiser takes place Dec. 11 and 18 from 6-10 p.m. in the Indian Trails neighborhood off Alderman Road and Omaha Street. DECEMBER 2021 TampaBayParenting.com

Moms to Know to c re

pho

Since I’ve known Carolynn, she has married her soulmate, had two babies, expanded her current company, started a nonprofit, moved across the city twice... and we’ve only been friends for three years. The business owner who does it all, the mom that makes it happen, a decorated hall-of-fame athlete- you would expect this 6’2”- foot tall woman to be the most fearless, most confident person in the room. But the reality is that she has overcome the odds, persisted through pain, and is today, inspiring our future generation of leaders, athletes and stars to do the same through the Jones Family Foundation.

CAROLYNN SMITH-JONES 7 Marketing + PR / Jones Family Foundation Tampa Bay JT: Ok, give us the good stuff. Where do you get your level of energy and how can we get that too? CSJ: I’m always tired! Well, I don’t sugarcoat, because I truly have a heart to give and help others with my story and lessons I learn in this beautiful journey of life. From a young age, I have been given a special “gift” to lift others through the work I do professionally and personally. This is what drives me. This and my 3 baby boys and my heart & soul – my husband, KJ. Over the years, and since baby #3 (Micah), I have incorporated the following into my daily routines: At least 6-7 hours of sleep; clean eating (minimal carbs, processed food and sugars); cardio and weights (even if it’s just a quick 30-minute walk at 5:30 a.m. to listen to a podcast or my worship music before the boys wake up); and morning meditation and breath work. (My go-to guided app is Mindvalley.) It’s amazing what 15 minutes of guided meditation and gratitude will do for your life. JT: Once upon a time there was a woman who was broken and whose wings were clipped. She was grounded and didn’t have the belief that she could fly ever again. What can you tell us about your past and how it shaped the mother and businesswoman you are today? CSJ: (Tears) I spent many years in a very abusive relationship. It stripped me down to where I lost myself and did not know who I was. My life was full of “glitz and glam” on the outside, but in reality, it was a cold, hollow Hollywood stage set. No one knew the abuse I was hiding for years, not even my friends and family. When I finally had the courage to leave everything and start over, I was forced to leave my home with only a few suitcases of personal items, negative funds in my bank, my former spouse’s mountain of debt, and a career in hospitality that I had to resign from. I learned when you are in survival mode to rebuild a new life of peace, happiness and strength, there is nowhere to go but up. I dug deep, I prayed (a lot), I surrounded myself with a strong support system (my family, friends and church). I listened to self-help and inspirational podcasts daily (Thank You, Tony Robbins and Joel Osteen!) and I got up every day and did the best I could that day. I took each day one day at a time. I love the quote from the late legendary women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt, “Left foot, right foot, breathe, repeat.” The year I left is when God spoke to me and gave me the vision of my current company, “Seven Marketing + PR,” which was birthed the year I was recovering and healing. I hit the ground running and finally found my passion in helping people through PR. This year, I will celebrate 10 years in business and a life of peace, love and true happiness.

TampaBayParenting.com DECEMBER 2021

JT: Every December for the past four years, you change the lives of over 150 children as you fulfill their Christmas wish lists. Tell us more about this project and what inspired you to initially “adopt” these kids. CSJ: My ministry is helping inner city youth through mentorship and year-round holiday events to give them hope and bring together our community of all colors and backgrounds. Every year we produce a Christmas Celebration at the Wilbert Davis Boys & Girls Club in Belmont Heights/Tampa. I have been a mentor and served the Boys & Girls Clubs inner city youth for over eight years. My calling is to pour into the lives of as many underprivileged youths I can. I have seen year over year the success stories that come from even limited time spent in mentoring and giving back to kids in need. It gives them hope and shows them there are good people in the world that care—even if they are strangers. For our Christmas event, the Club kids provide us with their wish list of gifts they most likely would not receive from home, and we put on a magical Winter Wonderland party the week before Christmas and let them all rip open their wish list gifts at the same time. The room is full of loud screaming, laughs, jumping up and down, and a lot, a lot of tears. I am proud to now have our own 501 (C) (3), The Jones Family Foundation of Tampa Bay, so we can expand our giving and launch our high school mentorship program in 2022. JT: As a mom of three boys, what have you learned about yourself that you wouldn’t have known without them. What is the one thing you want them to know when they read this article one day? CSJ: Ethics. Hard work. Communication. Ministry. I’ve learned how to (patiently) communicate and educate better than ever before. My parents always sat my sister, Amy, and I down and explained why people said things they would say or why people did certain things, especially in hurtful and unethical situations. These are important lessons I have carried over to my parenting. Most boys and men by nature are a lot more aggressive and less emotional than women. But I always instill into my boys the balance of tenderness, love, kindness, affection and so much more. I want my boys to understand that it’s okay to show affection and that REAL men think of others and are willing to understand those around them and help them when people are in need. JT: What is your favorite way to spend the weekend with your family in Tampa Bay? CSJ: We are usually on a hot baseball field, football field, basketball court or watching one of our favorite Champa Bay teams compete. When it’s mom’s choice, I love going to the Tampa Riverwalk and spending the weekend at the Don CeSar on St. Pete Beach.

Curtain Time: A Dialogue with the Patel Conservatory by Tara Payor, Ph.D. | photos provided by the Patel Conservatory

Great American playwright Arthur Miller regarded theater “as a serious business...that makes…man more human, which is to say, less alone.” Theater is cathartic and communal. However, as COVID headlined, stage lights went dark. Fortunately, witnessing life on stage—with others—is back. Dressing rooms bright with anticipation. Backstage aglow with talent. Entire theaters alive with actors, dancers, musicians, technicians, producers, choreographers and audiences—all so gloriously human. Matthew Belopavlovich, Theater Department Artistic Director for the Straz Center’s Patel Conservatory, spoke with me about why the theater is good for kids and families.

TBPM: Why is it important for kids to experience theater as audience members? MB: Adults are theatergoers to reset and enjoy themselves. Kids need the same. Beyond that, it offers kids low risk opportunities for problem solving. On stage, kids see relatable people moving through conf lict resolution processes. Ideas for handling in-real-life encounters emerge. Also, when kids see kids on stage it encourages them to pursue an artform. It’s different than seeing strictly adults on Broadway. Seeing peers perform is especially powerful when kids have difficulty fitting in.

TBPM: How does the theater support kids’ confidence? MB: The hard work and time put into learning and improving at theater build confidence. Theater makes for better employees—regardless of job; it makes for more personable, articulate, productive and creative people. During present pivoting and gear shifting times—and beyond—these are invaluable. Patel offers noncompetitive opportunities, like musical theater. For audition-based programs, we offer classes on handling rejection. Rejection is inevitable, and we teach kids how to funnel feelings into auditions. We help kids notice how rejection is an opportuPATEL CONSERVATORY nity for continued training. BOX OFFICE When kids learn specific areas for improvement, THE LITTLE MATCHGIRL: Dec. 2-5 they can better target HOLIDAY MUSIC CONCERT: Dec. 14 rehearsals; deliberate THE NUTCRACKER: Dec. 17-19 practice supports confidence. Believe in children Visit Strazcenter.org for aiming for Broadway. COVID-19 safety guidelines. Register to try a class at the beginning of each semester.

TBPM: How does the theater teach teamwork? MB: In the arts, we creatively put life on stage: showing audiences the power of human strength and dance, showcasing life’s beauty. It takes ingenuity and teamwork. There’s social interaction among cast, crew and audience. Whether it’s acting, dancing or music, the exchange between artist and audience creates team. I’ve seen the sense of team forged by the arts help homeschooled, international and shy students. Success, on, behind and off the stage, is possible when we feel comfortable sharing our feelings with others.

TBPM: Why is it important for families to experience the theater together? MB: Adults forget how to play. Theater, play through observation, reteaches everyone to play. Theater invigorates imagination and, if willing to put devices down, that carries into the home. With simple cardboard boxes, families can create a whole new world—diving deep into fantasy and adventure. Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) appeals to families through its sensory elements and interactive components.

TBPM: How can parents support theater skills at home? MB: Make time for it, for play. Turn on the music and just dance. Make up stories about found objects, with each family member adding on. Turn household items into props. Whatever imaginary world your child creates, travel there. Theater, like life, is about improvisation. Like life, theater also requires discipline. If kids start formal training, regularly check in with them. Encourage kids to remain organized; practice lines with kids. The Straz Center YouTube page is another way for families to enjoy theater at home. Theater creates collective excitement. We can again, together, celebrate glorious humanity on stage. Curtain call. UNDERCOVER UNDERAGE A Mom Disguises Herself as a Teen to Nab Online Predators by Maggie Rodriguez, photos courtesy of Discovery+

Fifteen-year-old Floribeth brushes her long hair, puts on a headband and checks her braces in the mirror. She’s about to connect with a man she met online—a predator with bad intentions. He has no idea that she’s not actually a teenager. She is 38-yearold child advocate Roo Powell, in disguise, as one of three teenaged personas she created for her new show, Undercover Underage, now streaming on Discovery+.

40

TampaBayParenting.com DECEMBER 2021

TBPM: HOW DID YOU TRANSFORM YOURSELF INTO THESE TEENAGERS? RP: We use a lot of different techniques. We use wigs,

TBPM: WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PREDATORS WHO ENGAGE WITH YOUR CHARACTERS? RP: Our role is we gather the evidence. We’re able to iden-

prosthetics, make-up and teen clothing and then we also use the context of a background like a kid’s bedroom. We also have a very savvy visual lead who has all the things to de-age me from being 38 to being a believable teen and that includes removing little smile lines and the wrinkles and the stretch marks.

pulse of how teens communicate. It’s really easy to sound like you’re trying really hard and not being an authentic teen. So we spent a lot of time studying teen culture and what the kids are doing and saying because that language is always evolving and so our knowledge of that needs to evolve along with it.

TBPM: HOW DO PREDATORS BEGIN TO WOO OR GROOM THEIR VICTIMS? RP: A lot of times the conversation starts off

really benign. And what they do is this level of trust-building that seems super innocuous in the beginning, and it makes it easy for kids to say something less innocuous. For example, someone might say, “Oh what are you wearing to school today?” And you might say, “overalls and a t-shirt.” [Then they might say], “Oh that sounds so cute. Can you take a photo?” And so you take a photo because that seems benign. And once a kid is used to saying yes over and over again, it becomes really easy to coerce a kid to say yes to something that’s a bit more insidious. And they do this slow burn sometimes, and at that point, they’ve built trust. They make you believe that they’re your friend or your boyfriend or someone that really cares about you.

TBPM: WHAT’S THE MOST DISTURBING INTERACTION THAT YOU HAD? RP: I think the ones that bother me the most are the ones

that the men I’m talking to are very obviously involved in some sort of C-SAM business (C-SAM meaning “child sex abuse material,” which a lot of us know as child porn). They’re very invested in creating and collecting it and disseminating and selling it. Maybe there’s a revenue model there. And this kind of ties into sex trafficking as well. As opposed to it being—you know, one person looking for one kid to groom—it’s multiple people looking for multiple kids looking to create C-SAM in order to generate revenue. Those are the ones that keep me up at night for sure.

tify who the bad actor is online and we take that and we hand it over to law enforcement. And we close our books on that case essentially. Law enforcement can do a number of things with that. They can conduct their own independent investigation, or we give them the account so they can log in as a teenaged girl and they can be the ones communicating so they can collect the evidence themselves.

actually is. And people think, oh maybe it’s because this teenaged girl is posting photos of herself in a bikini on Instagram, so of course people are reaching out to her. I have posed as an 11-year-old, completely covered, neck to knees and it doesn’t matter. Any kid can be a target. Any kid can be at risk, regardless of gender, regardless of sexuality, regardless of age. And I think that is the part that can be really shocking to parents is that it’s not about being a good kid; it’s not about being a smart kid; it’s simply just about being a kid and the onus is on us as a society to protect our most vulnerable, which is kids.

TBPM: WHAT CAN WE AS PARENTS DO TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN FROM PREDATORS? RP: The best thing I believe parents can

do is to talk with their kids often about online dangers because this is new. It’s uncharted territory and predation can happen on any app with a chat client, any website with a chat client. It’s not limited to Snapchat and Tik Tok and the ones that get all the buzz in the news. It’s coloring book apps, it’s gaming platforms and so parents need to let their kids know to trust their gut. You know, if something feels yuck, tell a parent or a caregiver and let them know that they’re not going to be penalized should something happen because abuse is never a victim’s fault. And that is the biggest issue is that a kid is led to believe it’s their fault somehow, and they feel ashamed, and they’re scared to tell someone because they feel they’re going to be blamed.

TBPM: WHAT IS YOUR GOAL WITH THIS SHOW? IT WILL BE A SUCCESS IF…? RP: The show will be a success if it empowers our com-

munities to combat sex abuse together. And it empowers parents and caregivers to be there for kids. It empowers lawmakers to consider grooming statutes and raising the age of consent. I will feel like it’s a success if there is just mass awareness around this.

PRESENTED BY DR. KIRAN C. PATEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

New School on the Block by Ashley Galfond, Principal at Dr. Kiran C. Patel Elementary School

A new learning adventure awaits elementary students of Tampa Bay in 2022. Dr. Kiran C. Patel Elementary School opens its doors on the Dr. Kiran C. Patel Campus for Innovative Learning in August 2022. We are a notfor-profit, tuition-free public charter school founded on Dr. Patel’s belief that “The best and most valuable gift you can give someone is the gift of education.”

WHAT MAKES DR. KIRAN C. PATEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DIFFERENT? Patel Elementary School’s educational program is a combination of rigorous academic content, Project Based Learning and Social Emotional Learning that focuses on Whole Child Development. Our educational program incorporates hands-on learning and supports a higher degree of student engagement with a focus on the overall wellness of our students from the inside out. Our motto at Patel Elementary is “Healthy Hearts and Minds.”

HOW DO YOU PLAN TO MEET THE NEEDS OF ALL STUDENTS? Dr. Kiran C. Patel Elementary School is committed to establishing a school climate and culture that is a safe learning environment for students, teachers and families. We believe that students who are embraced within a family school culture focused on the Whole Child, with Social Emotional Learning and Leadership Development, and within a Project Based Learning design, will be well-equipped to succeed in their future endeavors. Project Based Learning, rather than textbook-driven instruction, fosters a deeper learning of academic content and builds a stronger motivation to learn.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT? Patel Elementary School students and staff adhere to the expectations of always promoting the physical and emotional safety of others. Our state-of-the-art building is secure with card entry access-controlled systems, security cameras and an on-site school security officer. Our educators take a Whole Child approach to enhance learning by addressing each student’s social, emotional, physical and academic needs.

HOW IS THE SCHOOL DESIGNED? With an intentional design of larger innovative classrooms within our beautiful new building, student workspaces are created to allow opportunities for f lexible group learning, collaboration, access to technology and independent workstations. Physical well-being is supported through daily opportunities to engage in physical education, recess and brain breaks on our playgrounds, tennis courts, soccer fields and track.

HOW CAN MY CHILD BECOME A PART OF THE DR. KIRAN C. PATEL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FAMILY? We are now accepting kindergarten, first and second grade student applications at www.patelelementary.org. The lottery is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022. We officially open and welcome our first students in August 2022. Our inaugural year will include kindergarten through second grade, with an enrollment of 270 students. We will add a grade level each year, until we meet capacity with 652 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Please visit our website for opportunities to tour the school and learn more.

LIBRARIES: The Gift that Keeps on Giving by Jasmin Valentino, photos provided by Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library.

This year, foster your family’s holiday spirit with help from the public library. Because the public library is an inclusive space for all members of the community, we invite you to take this time to celebrate and learn about winter holidays around the world. Why celebrate one holiday when you can celebrate many? Learning about different winter season holidays is a simple way to teach children about cultural and religious diversity. By learning about many cultures, children develop respect for others and an expanded worldview.

THE FOLLOWING BOOKS ARE SOME OF OUR FAVORITES THAT SHOWCASE DIVERSE HOLIDAY TRADITIONS: SHANTÉ KEYS AND THE NEW YEAR'S PEAS | Shanté visits her grandma for New Year’s. When grandma forgets the black-eyed peas for their meal, Shanté sets out to borrow some from the neighbors and learns their unique family celebrations. For ages 4-8. hcplc.bibliocommons.com/item/show/495473142 OSKAR AND THE EIGHT BLESSINGS | Oskar is a Jewish refugee seeking sanctuary in 1938. However, with the help of two strangers, the Spanish custom of Las Posadas is a success. For ages 4-8. hcplc.bibliocommons.com/item/show/1353511142 LETTERS FROM FATHER CHRISTMAS | For over twenty years, the children of J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings, received letters from Father Christmas himself detailing stories of adventure and mischief in the North Pole. Introducing your family to new holidays can be as simple as a craft, a meal, listening to music or reading a book. Use the Hoopla app to stream holiday music, browse seasonal eBook cookbook recipes with Libby by Overdrive or check out the HCPLC catalog for DIY gift ideas. The Hillsborough County public libraries understand that however your family celebrates this time of year, it can be a hectic time for everyone. DR. JOYCE BURICK SWARZMAN Awarded State “Teacher’s Teacher” Recognition story and photo by Corbett Preparatory School of IDS

As Corbett Preparatory School of IDS’ longest serving Head of School, Dr. Joyce Burick Swarzman established a model of professional development that inspired her own faculty and staff as well as thousands of educators worldwide to strive for excellence and keep students at the center of all they do. The Florida Council of Independent Schools (FCIS) honored Dr. Swarzman this month with the 2021 Edgar McCleary Service Award, a special recognition for a “teacher’s teacher” who has given generously of his or her time to further the mission of FCIS schools. FCIS, the state accrediting organization for independent schools, created the award in 2011 to spotlight educators who go above and beyond in their service. Founded in 1968, Corbett Prep is a private independent International Baccalaureate school that serves 500+ PreK3-8th grade students from all over the Tampa Bay area. Dr. Barbara Hodges, executive director of FCIS, presented the award via Zoom during the FCIS Annual Convention this month while Dr. Swarzman, Corbett Prep faculty and staff and more than 1,000 guests watched online. “Corbett is a very, very special place,” said Dr. Hodges. “But it wasn’t just about Corbett.” Throughout her career, Dr. Swarzman led professional development trainings for more than 20,000 teachers locally, nationally and internationally. She created the research-based M.O.R.E. Model (Multiple Options for Results in Education), specific components and strategies designed to help educators create a brain-friendly learning environment, and she traveled to Spain and China to share those methods with schools worldwide. Her efforts produced great teachers, many of whom became great heads of school, Hodges said. And together they changed the lives of countless children. A native of Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Swarzman received her Bachelor of Art degree from Ohio State University. She received her Master of Arts in counseling, her Master of Education degree in supervision and curriculum, and her Doctorate in teacher education, all from

Teachers College, Columbia University, New York. Dr. Swarzman has extensive experience as a classroom teacher, having taught in the inner cities of Chicago, Atlanta and New York. Her story is told in the book "It’s All about Kids: Every Child Deserves a Teacher of the Year," published in 2004. Dr. Swarzman joined Corbett Prep – then Independent Day School – in 1996. A strong leader, energetic teacher and experienced trainer, Dr. Swarzman was the director of the University of South Florida’s Suncoast Area Teacher Training program. She made professional development a priority for IDS/Corbett Prep and hosted conferences in cooperative learning, social-emotional learning and brain-based communication. In 2020, Corbett Prep welcomed Nicholas Rodriguez as its new Head of School, and Dr. Swarzman turned her focus on supporting initiatives and training. Rodriguez, who has two decades of experience in private and independent schools, honed his leadership skills during a yearlong fellowship with Dr. Swarzman. Corbett Prep maintains its commitment to the dynamic learning community Dr. Swarzman established. Hodges said she looked forward to the ways Dr. Swarzman will continue to shape the lives of students and their teachers: “She joins the greats of the greats, but she’s not finished yet.” “You create magic,” Dr. Hodges told Dr. Swarzman.

Find a Sense of CALM:

How to teach social-emotional intelligence in the home by Laura Byrne

If you’ve read many articles about parenting and education this year, you’ve probably learned about the importance of social-emotional intelligence and learning. It’s a focus of Marnie Lebowitz Fuente, M.S., EdS, the program director of the Quality Early Education System (QEES) at Hillsborough Community College. She’s been teaching families and teachers in our community for years about how to implement CALM—Conscious Awareness Learning Model—to ensure our children are getting the best start in the classroom and in life. We recently caught up with her to learn more about CALM and how we can take simple steps to incorporate the CALM method at home.

FIRST—WHAT EXACTLY IS THE CONSCIOUS AWARENESS LEARNING MODEL OR CALM?

IS THIS BEING TAUGHT TO LOCAL EARLY EDUCATION TEACHERS?

FUENTE: CALM is part of the Quality Early Education System-QEES that takes a holistic approach to early childhood education. The program is fully funded by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Understanding the power of social-emotional intelligence, CALM combines Conscious Discipline©, positive psychology, mindfulness and brain and child development to teach children, families and teachers social-emotional skills. These are essential foundational skills that prime children for academic learning and a growth mindset.

FUENTE: CALM is a countywide model serving all licensed early childhood providers. Last year, the program served over 250 providers and 1,000 teachers in Hillsborough County.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING THIS METHOD AS A PARENT OR CAREGIVER? FUENTE: There are comprehensive benefits to this method. Teaching parents and caregivers about mindfulness skills based on brain research helps adults learn healthy and meaningful ways to communicate with their children. It enables them to teach their children skills that not only help manage emotions but give opportunity for problem solving together. The more adults learn and know about their children and what triggers they have, the closer and more positive a relationship they can develop. These skills are not only valuable for learning in a home or school environment, but they become valuable life lessons and skills that help the child as they grow into adulthood. Having strong self-awareness supports healthy relationships as children continue to learn and grow while facing the challenges ahead. Another invaluable benefit is that the adult and child can grow and learn together. Social-emotional development is a lifelong journey as the world changes and presents us with different sets of circumstances each day. As of 2021, 62% of parents feel teaching Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is very important, compared to 55% three years ago. Parents also believe that SEL is not emphasized as much as it should be (81%), that it has become even more important since the beginning of the pandemic (82%), and that it is helpful for children learning online (80%).

WHAT ARE SOME BASIC PRINCIPLES PARENTS CAN APPLY AT HOME? FUENTE: Empathy: Show children we care about their [being] upset and find ways to work through it together. We must understand that they are always learning, rapidly building synaptic brain connections. Children’s prefrontal lobes (responsible for problem-solving) are not fully developed until 26 years old, therefore [they] need to be taught emotional skills just as we teach academic skills. They can’t demonstrate something they have not been taught. Adults must model [this] by taking pause to teach children how to identify and explain their feelings and emotions. Then, we can teach them the skills necessary for self-regulation. Parents should practice taking deep breaths with their children when they are calm to help them learn a tool that they will need when they are not upset. The parent could also provide a “safe place” or “cozy corner” at home with items that bring comfort. Having a favorite soft pillow/blanket or books, a “stress” ball or any sensory item will help the child refocus and find inner peace. By practicing breathing and having a safe place, the child learns how to calm themselves and is empowered by this self-regulation skill. The child also learns that it is ok to be sad, angry or disappointed, but it is not ok to be hurtful. They learn to take deep breaths during stressful moments (because they have practiced this) which is a tool they can take anywhere they go.

HOW CAN FAMILIES/CAREGIVERS CONNECT WITH YOU AND THE PROGRAM TO LEARN MORE OR TAKE A CLASS? PRESENTED BY JOHNS HOPKINS ALL CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL

SAYLOR CELEBRATES FIRST BIRTHDAY Thanks to Her Medical Team by Roy Adams

Saylor celebrates her first birthday this month after being born premature at 31 weeks in a south Florida hospital. She was diagnosed with tracheoesophageal fistula and esophageal atresia, a condition that occurs when a baby’s esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth to the stomach) does not develop properly. It affects a baby’s eating and breathing. It is somewhat rare, impacting one out of every 3-4,000 births. Saylor was transferred to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, in February 2021 by the hospital’s LifeLine Critical Care Transport Team, which provides round-theclock specialized transport care to critically ill newborns, infants and children. Saylor also needed special medical care from the hospital’s Esophageal and Airway Treatment (EAT) program and had a long stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The EAT program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital specializes in treatment for infants, children and young adults with complex esophageal and airway problems. “It’s been a long and complicated road,” says Saylor’s mom, MaryBeth. “She needed emergency surgery within the first 24 hours of her life. She had a rough time and did not seem to be recovering. After some searching, we found Dr. Jason Smithers and the EAT program at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. That was a game changer for us. He determined she had severe tracheomalacia, which caused her windpipe to collapse. As soon as she was stable enough, she ended up having another 12-hour surgery.”

TampaBayParenting.com DECEMBER 2021

“Saylor was dealing with several medical issues when she arrived here,” Smithers says. “In addition to esophageal atresia, she was suffering from chronic lung disease related to prematurity. She also had a f loppy trachea that was collapsing a lot.” Through several surgical procedures, Smithers and the EAT team were able to put Saylor on the road to recovery. “Throughout her stay at Johns Hopkins All Children’s, I was nervous and a little scared, but also felt very comfortable because the medical staff always involved me in daily rounds. They all spoke with me, not at me. The entire team made me comfortable and confident in Saylor’s care and treatment plan,” MaryBeth says. “On the day she was discharged, I got special T-shirts for the doctors and nurses. The shirts have a quote from Shakespeare, ‘Although she be but little, she is fierce.’ She has had a lot to deal with and has always pulled through,” she says. Shortly after Saylor was discharged in February, she was readmitted for more surgery. Today, she is at home and still on oxygen, but her lungs continue improving. Saylor’s care also includes a cardiologist due to pulmonary hypertension, but with treatment she’s doing much better. She is also seen at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s outpatient center in Fort Myers since she is bilaterally deaf and has been fitted with hearing aids. “Her outlook for a healthy life is a good one, thanks to the team at Johns Hopkins All Children’s,” her mother says.

ASK THE DOCTOR: Your child and the COVID vaccine by Laura Byrne

When the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Pfizer’s two-dose COVID vaccine for use in children ages 5-11, many parents rejoiced in this moment. But, we also know many of you have your hesitations—and some serious questions. You're not alone. That's why we’re once again turning to Dr. Christina Canody, director of the pediatric service line at BayCare and Dr. Allison Ford Messina, chairman of the Division of Infectious Disease of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, to get answers for you. Just like with adults and teens, Pfizer’s COVID vaccine for kids will be two doses, spaced three weeks apart with full immunity taking hold two weeks after the second dose. It is important to point out that a child’s dose is smaller than the adult and teen dose at 10 micrograms compared to the 30 micrograms adults and teens receive.

TBPM: We know there is hesitation among some parents about the COVID vaccine for their children since it’s a new mRNA vaccine they’ve never received before. What would you tell parents who are concerned about the COVID vaccine technology?

TBPM: Some people are still skeptical about how quickly the COVID vaccines were developed. How do you address their concerns?

DR. CANODY: It’s important for families to know mRNA technology has been around since about 1990, so it’s been over 30 years. It’s been used especially in targeted and brain cancers where there are very specific cells to limit, so it’s a very targeted therapy. There is a lot of research and information. And when you put unlimited dollars, unlimited resources, and very smart people together, you can come up with a vaccine quickly. And obviously, this was not rolled out quickly in children. It took almost a year for it to come out in younger children, and they wanted to make sure it was safe.

DR MESSINA: The way it works is not terribly dissimilar from many other vaccines. The change is in the delivery platform. The way I think about them [the mRNA vaccines] and the way this delivery platform works is they are very elegant. They only deliver just the protein that we need the body to make an antibody to and YOUR TEEN AND THE nothing else. There are no extraneous COVID VACCINE: products. It’s a little molecule of fat in order to keep the mRNA stable. It’s a tiny Medical experts piece of mRNA that’s delivered. It codes at Tampa General for something called a spike protein, and Hospital answer that’s what we need to make antibodies to prevent you from getting sick. common questions Sometimes people raise the concern, well—isn’t that bizarre that you are introducing mRNA to my cells? Remember that when you get sick with a virus, viruses always introduce their mRNA into your cells. They introduce a lot of mRNA. They introduce enough mRNA that it makes an entire virus. So, if you’re afraid of the vaccine because you are afraid of the exposure to mRNA, you are getting mRNA in spades if you actually get COVID. There’s really not a lot of difference between how your cells process the mRNA that the vaccine gives you versus the virus except— and this is a very important except—that the vaccine only contains just that little portion. It DOESN’T contain the whole virus. And if it doesn’t contain the whole virus, it’s not going to make you sick because it doesn’t replicate. All it does is give you a little bit of that protein so you can make antibodies to it.

Another thing that should make this less of a concern is that the 5-11-year-olds are getting this vaccine after literally millions and millions of people have already received it. And there have not been any serious safety signals that have been seen.

74

TampaBayParenting.com DECEMBER 2021

TBPM: Kids come in all shapes, sizes and weights. Should a smaller 5-year-old not receive the COVID vaccine quite yet, and on the flip side, should a larger 11-year-old opt for the dose teens and adults receive?

DR. CANODY: A diverse group of children ages 5 through 11 were included in this study, and just as well of a diverse group of weights [was] in there. Based on the study data, there was really no difference in the weight-based dosing or in age-based within that realm. They truly looked at the response rate and any side effects that were found. In general, the side effects were even lower than in teenagers. And when it comes down to weight, it truly has to do with your immune system function. It’s one thing when you are talking about metabolizing an antibiotic and dosing it based on weight, and it’s another thing when we are looking at immune function. We know that throughout childhood and adolescence, the immune system takes different steps. We know there’s one step when they hit that 2-month-old age when the blood-brain barrier gets thicker. They hit another step around 6 months of age. They hit another step around 2-2.5, a little bit more around 5, and then again early on in adolescents somewhere between 10 and 12. And then we truly move into an adult immune system by age 15 to age 16.

TBPM: If a child already had COVID or recently recovered from COVID, should they wait to get the vaccine or not get it at all since they have a degree of natural immunity?

DR. CANODY: They do have more robust immunity in those first few weeks to months after the infection, so for most families, we say wait at least two weeks from the complete resolution of symptoms. Now, if somebody still has loss of smell or taste, that’s not a resolution of symptoms. Those are still post-COVID or what we call long COVID symptoms, but in general, once they’ve resolved after two weeks, it’s okay to get that. If they prefer to wait a little bit longer or are worried about a reaction, I wouldn’t say waiting any longer than 2-3 months. It’s important to know that right now that children are carrying the burden of 25% of all new cases in our country, so this is why this is the right time for kids to get the vaccine. DR. MESSINA: Even though COVID-19 is less serious in children, it is still in the top 10 leading causes of death in children right now. COVID-19 in the adult population is vying for number one or two causes of death in the United States. For children, it is still in the top 10; in fact, for older children, it’s in the top five. I think what people should understand is that children are a very healthy population, so there shouldn’t be any deaths or hospitalizations.

TBPM: Should I give my child a dose of pain relievers like Tylenol or Motrin before their vaccination to mitigate any side effects?

DR. MESSINA: If you don’t need to, don’t take it, especially Motrin-type medications because they can actually blunt immune response a little bit—not completely, it’s not like it’s going to be worthless, but it will actually temper that immune response a little bit.

TBPM: Can I just have my child take the first dose and not the second?

DR. MESSINA: The issue with just having one is you need that next dose to really stimulate what’s called the memory cells in your immune system. If you have it once, you will make antibodies, but what happens over time—and this happens with whatever vaccine (and remember, a lot of vaccines are given as a series)—so that first dose of the vaccine helps your body make antibodies; the second dose educates your memory cells to always make antibodies. So, you are not really done until you’ve had that second dose. are

Doctors urging pregnant people to get the COVID vaccine. LEARN WHY.

TBPM: What side-effects of the COVID vaccine are being seen in kids ages 5-11?

DR CANODY: In general, children tend to respond very well to the vaccine. The rates of fever are much lower [and so are] rates of fatigue and malaise. The overall side effects were a little bit of injection site pain or redness at the injection site. Unlike the adults where we really saw well over 50% have reactions, in children it’s much lower than that. I don’t think you necessarily have to plan your schedule around getting the vaccine for kids, but maybe just understand for 24 hours not doing a lot of vigorous activity, especially in adolescents and older teenagers.

TBPM: Speaking of side effects, we’ve heard of the rare instances of myocarditis in teen boys, specifically after the second dose. Is myocarditis something a parent should be concerned about with their younger children when they get the COVID vaccine?

DR. CANODY: At this point in the studies, there were no cases of myocarditis in the younger children that were detected. However, knowing that 12-19-year-olds had the highest risk in adolescent males put us to be cognizant of that. And it really occurs after the second dose, not the first dose, so in the two weeks following the second dose, parents should look out for easy fatiguability, shortness of breath or not feeling well. But as I said, there were no cases of it in the preliminary studies. There are several phases of the studies and once we start administering the vaccine, that is when phase four starts. Phase four is when we start collecting more information, and we’ll know more details as time goes on.

TBPM: What other concerns have you heard from parents about the COVID vaccine and their kids?

DR. MESSINA: The thing that’s the most unfortunate to me is that there was this rumor put by somebody somewhere that this could affect fertility, and there was never any reason to think that. We have tons and tons of data now that says that just doesn’t happen. The vaccine is encouraged by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the leading body of scientists and doctors who care for pregnant and women of reproductive age.

TBPM: Can kids get the COVID vaccine with other immunizations like the flu shot or other scheduled vaccines?

DR. CANODY: It is okay to do the vaccines at the same time. Based on the benefit versus risk, still being in the middle of a pandemic, it is important to get kids caught up on their vaccines and it’s okay to do COVID along with that.

TBPM: Is the possibility of herd immunity in Florida a reason to not get the COVID vaccine?

DR. MESSINA: I think this concept of herd immunity is a nice thought, but I don’t know how realistic that really is going to be. I think we’re in better shape than we used to be because cases are way down in Florida, which is great, but I don’t think we can be complacent and think it’s going to stay that way forever.

TBPM: And we really don’t know how future potential variants will impact kids?

DR. CANODY: We do know the vaccine has shown effectiveness against multiple variants. Recovering from one particular variant doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be immune to the next variant, so we do feel that based on the data we have that the vaccine is superior in providing long term protection.

PRESENTED BY BAYCARE

CLASS ACT:

BayCare Welcomes its First Batch of Pediatric Residents by Anu Varma Panchal

For many parents, BayCare Kids is the first name that comes to mind when we’re thinking of a place to entrust with the care of our sick children. But as the largest provider of pediatric services in the Tampa Bay area—and the second largest in the state of Florida—BayCare now has an additional feather in its cap. Starting July 2022, BayCare will begin training the next generation of pediatricians when it launches the three-year BayCare Pediatrics Residency with a community care focus.

For Dr. Christina Canody, BayCare Pediatric Service Line Medical Director, the prospect of starting this program is as exciting as finally opening a much-anticipated Christmas present under the tree. BayCare already offers two family medicine residencies and a sports medicine fellowship (in conjunction with the University of South Florida), but this BayCare pediatric residency, along with a new psychiatric residency, is among the newest offerings that will help bring more physicians into the workforce. A pediatrics residency is a three-year program that physicians with an MD (Doctor of Medicine) or DO (Doctor of Osteopathy) degree must complete to become fully trained and certified in the specialties that they choose. Most begin to apply to these programs during their fourth year of medical school, and on the much-anticipated “Match Day” that usually occurs in March, they learn which of their residency choices they received. By mid-November, BayCare had already fielded 150 applications for the eight positions that they will fill for next year. (Eight residents will be added per year for a total of 24 residents in the program.) Dr. Canody, a 20-year veteran of BayCare, is excited about the prospect of guiding a new generation of pediatricians into the field, particularly at a time when the nation faces a shortage of physicians—one that is expected to worsen by pandemic-related rates of early retirement (nearly 45 percent of physicians are 55 or older) and physician burnout, according to the American Medical Association. At BayCare, future pediatricians will gain experience in many medical specialties such as congenital cardiology, hematology and oncology, and also get a thorough grounding in community care by participating in initiatives like the BayCare Kids mobile

medical clinic or St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital’s Chronic-Complex Clinic for medically fragile children. As well as treating children, the residents will learn how to improve their patients’ families’ access to services and care, including through BayCare partner organizations such as Metropolitan Ministries, La Esperanza Clinic for migrant families and the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. Here, they will learn all about how comprehensive care includes basics such as vaccinations, food and developmental screenings—interventions that can have a lifetime impact on a young patient. “These are the things that make a difference in the lives of patients,” says Dr. Canody. “Not just telling them what to do, but how to do it.” The emphasis on community health attracts the kind of physicians who already have displayed an interest by participating in mission trips or local community health initiatives. Because it is a new program, Dr. Canody says the early residents will have an opportunity to impact its future as their feedback can help shape the details of the program. From the “teacher” side, BayCare has a full complement of specialists in every aspect of pediatrics, from nursing to surgery, who are excited about the prospect of teaching and guiding the new residents. “I’ve been on staff here for over 20 years and have seen it blossom from a small community hospital to becoming a comprehensive children’s hospital with multiple subspecialties,” Dr. Canody says. “It’s truly one of the greatest opportunities—the ability to instill the knowledge you’ve learned and give back is invaluable. To be able to identify the passion and give residents the skills they need to know where that passion is going to take them… we are giddy with excitement at the prospect.”
