Tampa Bay Bucs Build Two Habitat Homes for the Holidays The Tampa Bay Buccaneers turned teamwork on the field into a life-changing impact in the community by trading their helmets for hard hats to help Habitat for Humanity of Tampa Bay Hillsborough build two new affordable, hurricaneresilient homes for Brandon families in need. This was Habitat’s third annual Holiday Home Build with the Bucs. Players, Bucs staff and members of the Player Community Impact Board worked alongside the future homeowners who were investing “sweat equity” hours to buy a safe, stable home with a mortgage they can afford.

Christmas came early to ZooTampa at Lowry Park with the birth of an adorable Angolan colobus monkey on Dec. 6!

This is the first birth of the species at the Zoo since 2018. They are classified as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and face threats from habitat loss due to deforestation and agricultural expansion. You can spot the newborn, distinguishable by its solid white fur, in the primates area of the zoo.

The James Museum: A new field trip for Pinellas County Second Graders The James Museum and Pinellas County Schools are proud to announce that every second grader in Pinellas County will visit The James Museum for a field trip starting with this academic year. This comes as part of a wider effort

Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH Shines a Light on Injury Prevention Day As part of the nationwide “Shine a Green Light” initiative, Muma Children’s Hospital at TGH put the spotlight on injury prevention in recognition of National Injury Prevention Day in November. The family-friendly event featured pediatric experts and community partners, bringing awareness to some of the top childhood injuries seen at the hospital. Safety stations covered key topics, including car seat safety, safe sleep education, gun violence prevention and drowning prevention.

Lions & Hyena Ridge Busch Gardens Tampa Bay: Opening this spring Busch Gardens is getting back to its roots with animals and conservation. After a few years of big thrill ride debuts, the park is about to unveil one of the country’s largest lion and hyena habitats in the park’s Edge of Africa Realm. You’ll get a 270-degree view of the pride of five young lion brothers and two playful hyenas as they climb, dig and explore the 35,000-square-foot savanna terrain.

Galacticoaster at LEGOLAND Florida Resort: Opening Feb. 27 LEGOLAND® Florida Resort is getting ready for an epic launch of a brand-new, groundbreaking roller coaster for the first time since 2011, and it’s going to be galactic! Not only will the Galacticoaster be indoors (yay!), but when it opens, you can expect to be immersed in a LEGO® galaxy in a way that’s never been done before.

You’ll be able to scan your RFID wristband and design your own space vehicle with more than 625 different combinations! The digital creation will then be merged with the physical thrills of a ride, blasting you through an intergalactic LEGO solar system filled with special effects, synchronized lighting and surprise appearances from classic LEGO Space icons … and maybe even a space cow!

Other recent additions at MINILAND USA:

ZooTampa: Florida Waters: Opening this spring From the streams to the rivers to the brackish waters near our coasts and the clear waters of the Keys, ZooTampa’s Florida Waters exhibit will take you on a journey of water in our state, immersing you in the world of the animals that call the waterways home. And the crown jewel is the Straz Family Manatee Rescue that has undergone a massive renovation.

Florida Waters is ZooTampa’s largest expansion to date, featuring three new habitats: Manatee Rescue, Otter Oasis and Reptile and Amphibian Discovery. There will even be a new 10,000-gallon tropical fish tank. We got a sneak peek during construction, and the space is pretty incredible.

And it’s a great spot to host an event, too!

The Zoo will also host its first Manatee Festival, a conservation and education event, in May.

LAS VEGAS: Look out for new space scenes, including people learning how to ride jet packs. There's also a new and colorful outdoor desert festival.

NEW YORK: Dinosaurs have invaded, and they look like they are filming a dinosaur movie in the city. The park’s LEGO Master Model Builders tell us it’s your job to use your imagination and fill in the rest of the story.

FUN FACT: More than 32 million LEGO bricks were used to create MINILAND USA!

NEW Animals at Clearwater Marine Aquarium BIG things are happening at Clearwater Marine Aquarium in 2026! The aquarium recently welcomed two bottlenose dolphins and several other animals from the Miami Seaquarium to their new home at CMA. The two female bottlenose dolphins, Star and Squirt, will join three resident bottlenose dolphins and six rough-toothed dolphin residents in the Ruth & J.O. Stone Dolphin Complex.

CMA will also welcome a brand-new sea lion exhibit. The Pinellas County Board of Commissioners finalized a funding agreement from the Tourist Development Council grant to make it possible to upgrade the facility and continue to care for all of the animals while elevating your experience as a guest.

NEW EXHIBITS: Dreaming in Bamboo at MOSI: Open through March 29

This new art exhibit at MOSI features huge sculptures woven entirely from bamboo collected right here in Tampa Bay. The artist, Alexander Nixon, is a Tampa native who spent two decades in New York City creating drawings of subway riders and map collages. He returned to Tampa in search of a new medium that felt connected to nature, and he discovered bamboo. And the result of his newfound medium is nothing short of awe-inspiring. “Dreaming in Bamboo” is located in the Arc Gallery on the second floor of the dome.

Summer of Crafting at Glazer Children's Museum: June-Aug. Get creative with recycled materials and crafting supplies all summer long at GCM! Children can try new art styles and experiment with different crafting tools and materials. There will be special guest crafters, crafting-themed storytimes and so much more. Your little maker won't want to miss it!

Leonardo da Vinci: Machines in Motion at MOSI: Opens Jan. 17 Get ready to crank, spin and fly into the mind of the world’s greatest inventor! You’ll take control of a full-scale mechanical playground bursting with motion, imagination and discovery.

Step inside and find yourself surrounded by 40 life-sized machines inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s original drawings. Kids (and parents, too!) can lift weights with da Vinci’s cranes, pump water with an Archimedes’ screw, test out floats designed for walking on water or climb into a full-sized armored tank that can hold eight people. You can even explore Leonardo’s flying machines, which he dreamed up centuries before the Wright Brothers ever left the ground.

The exhibit is arranged around da Vinci’s four classical elements—Earth, Water, Air and Fire—with each one revealing a different side of his endless curiosity.

REVAMPED EVENT FOR YOU, MAMA! Bucs: She is Football Summit The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are bringing back their She is Football Career Summit presented by Fifth Third Bank on Friday, March 6, with a new panel of national female leaders from various industries. The event, which coincides with International Women’s Day, is part of the Bucs’ She is Football mission to develop 50,000 female leaders annually.

The She is Football Walk, Run, and Stroll follows on Saturday, March 7. The route will take you through the team’s facilities, including Raymond James Stadium, and end with a big finish inside the AdventHealth Training Center Indoor Facility. Proceeds will support local programs that keep girls in the game. Kids can participate, too!

Shiver me timbers! Children’s Gasparilla is on the horizon, and there’s tons of fun to be had!

Celebrating its 79th year, the Ashley Children’s Gasparilla presented by Chick-fil-A Tampa Bay returns to Tampa Bay Jan. 24, 2026. Featuring several annual events including the Bicycle + Pedestrian Safety Rodeo, Gasparilla Air Invasion, Gasparilla Preschooler’s Stroll presented by Primrose Schools and the main event, the Children’s Gasparilla Parade, the day caps off with the Nighttime Gasparilla Air Invasion and the “Piratechnic Finale.” It leads the way for Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest, which takes place the following Saturday.

Arrgh you ready? Keep reading, because adventure awaits!

BICYCLE + PEDESTRIAN SAFETY RODEO NOON TO 2 P.M. During this free event, participants are fitted with free, brand-new bicycle helmets to keep (while supplies last) before hopping on one of the Rodeo’s bicycles to traverse through a mini-traffic course that teaches bicycle and pedestrian safety. photo credit Dave Pullis

GASPARILLA AIR INVASION NOON TO 3:30 P.M. The Gasparilla Air Invasion is back with its largest airshow yet! Watch civilian aerobatic teams, vintage military aircraft and The Chuters Parachute Demonstration Team swoop through the sky. The show begins at noon and runs through the start of the parade at 4 p.m.

GASPARILLA PRESCHOOLER’S STROLL PRESENTED BY PRIMROSE SCHOOLS 2-3 P.M. Calling Tampa Bay’s smallest swashbucklers! The Preschooler’s Stroll allows children ages 5 and under to strut their stuff along Bayshore Boulevard in their specially decorated wagons, bicycles and strollers while donning their best pirate attire. The Stroll begins at Howard Avenue and ends at Rome Avenue. To participate, pre-registration is required.

CHILDREN’S GASPARILLA PARADE 4-6:15 P.M. Brush up on your bead-catching skills! The Children’s Gasparilla Parade is widely considered the largest children’s event in the country.

Beginning at Bay to Bay and Bayshore boulevards, pirates, floats, marching bands and more will march north, ending at Edison Avenue. Anticipate appearances by Tampa’s sports teams, mascots and favorite characters, and let’s not forget beads, beads and more beads.

NIGHTTIME GASPARILLA AIR INVASION 6:15-7 P.M. The airshow fun continues during twilight hours. The performances will take place at dusk and include a precision parachute jump from The Chuters Parachute Demonstration Team and Ghostwriter Airshows’ signature fireworks flight.

PIRATECHNIC FINALE 7-7:30 P.M. Pirate + pyrotechnics = Piratechnics! This firework finale recreates the imaginary battle between the pirates of YMKG and the City of Tampa that began in 1904. This bold, colorful finale sets the scene for the energetic Gasparilla Pirate Fest that will take place the following Saturday, Jan. 25.

UPGRADE YOUR DAY If you’re not a fan of showing up early to claim your spot, there are several ways to upgrade your experience.

Reserve a bleacher seat at the start of the parade or a First Mate seat (chair seating) at the start or middle of the parade. Looking for dinner and a show? The Children’s Gasparilla Scully Hospitality Experience is located near the show center near Howard Avenue and offers bleacher seats, pre-parade entertainment and a picnic-style buffet.

WANNA PARTY LIKE A PIRATE? CHECK OUT OUR PRO TIPS! The Children’s Gasparilla Parade is a fun, but long, day.

Especially if you have little ones in tow, you’ll want to make sure to map out your day from beginning to end.

Here are some of our tips to help you prepare for the parade and navigate the day.

Look the part! Just because you’re not IN the parade doesn’t mean you can’t have fun sporting swashbuckling gear! Festive t-shirts, pirate costumes, hats and accessories are encouraged!

We love local shops like South Tampa Trading Co., Gasparilla Treasures and Pirate Fashions.

You'll be doing a lot of walking, so strollers and wagons will come in handy; you don't want to carry the kids around all day.

Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes are also a good idea.

Leave scooters and bicycles at home, as they are not permitted on Bayshore or within street closures on event day unless walked.

The closer to the parade time, the more crowded it will get. Get there early to snatch up your perfect parade-viewing spot.

Bring blankets and chairs to set in your space and hang out in while you wait for the pirates to invade Bayshore.

Portable games and/or activities to keep the kiddos busy can be helpful since we all know that kids and waiting don’t go together.

You can also check out the various partner activations along the route like Ashley Furniture (between Rubideaux Street and South Carolina Avenue).

It will be a long day so pack plenty of drinks and snacks to stay hydrated and keep bellies full. Please note – the Children’s Gasparilla Parade is an alcohol-free event (alcoholic drinks are allowed the following weekend at Gasparilla Pirate Fest). Coolers are not allowed at the parade.

Have essentials on hand – hand wipes, sunscreen, and toilet paper (just in case) — since bathroom breaks will consist of porta-potty visits.

Chances are, you’ll be catching lots and lots of beads. Bring an extra bag to put all your treasure in because they can get heavy!

Make sure to bring cards for vendors since cash is not accepted.

Familiarize yourself with the parade route, parking options and road closures before the big day to make knowing where to go a little smoother.

SEMINOLE HARD ROCK GASPARILLA PIRATE FEST Seminole Hard Rock Gasparilla Pirate Fest will take place on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, from noon to 7:30 p.m. While this event is open to all ages, it’s typically geared toward an older crowd. Here’s a glimpse of what to expect if you’re planning on attending:

The ship docks precisely at 1 p.m., and Captain Drew Pittman will meet Mayor Jane Castor to make his final demand for the key to the city.

PARADE OF PIRATES 2-5:30 P.M. The Gasparilla Parade of Pirates will boast over 140 units that include more than 100 elaborate floats, several marching bands, over 50 distinct Krewes and the infamous YMKG pirates. The parade begins at Bay to Bay and Bayshore boulevards and continues 4.5 miles to end at Cass Street and Ashley Drive. The event is free; however, reserved seating is available.

The Gasparilla Tradition is more than a party; it’s community.

TBPM: Tell us how your families ended up here in Tampa Bay. AS: All because of a palm tree. During World War II, my grandfather, Richard Whitacre, served in Panama, protecting the Panama Canal from attack. Being a farm boy from Ohio, he had never seen the tropics in his life. Needless to say, he fell in love. After the war was over and he got back home, he loaded up his three girls and said, “We are going to drive south until we see palm trees!” And while he did end up living in Miami for a while, he ultimately settled in Tampa.

TBPM: What are some of your earliest memories of Gasparilla and the Children’s Gasparilla Parade?

AS: I call my dad the original Buccaneer. In 1976, he was traded from the Packers to the Buccaneers in the expansion draft. Even though he grew up in Miami, once he retired, he knew Tampa was where he wanted to raise

a family. From that point on, he embraced everything that Tampa has to offer, and once my sister and I were old enough, he started taking us on the official Tampa Bay Buccaneers float for the parades. As I got older, my stepmother, Mary Ann Stiles, was well-known for throwing some of the best Gasparilla parties at her law office on 315 Plant Ave., now known as The Orlo. All great memories!

CS: In 2013, when Andrew and I were long-distance dating, I came down for Gasparilla. One reason I couldn’t move was that I had just signed a new 12-month lease in Atlanta. Well, thanks to the Sunset Salsa tent, we ran into some of Andrew’s friends who wanted to move to Atlanta. By the end of the day, we had a handshake agreement (sight unseen!) to sublease my apartment – I think the sunshine got to them! I moved down the next weekend!

There’s nothing quite like Gasparilla. We can’t think of anywhere else in the world where community leaders and professionals swap their business suits for pirate costumes before parading down a waterfront road tossing beads and goodies to the crowd. And let’s not forget that they started the day “invading” their city on a pirate ship and a flotilla of boats.

It’s a tradition that spans more than a century and one that has become a treasured part of many Tampa families’ legacies – the Smith family included. A member of the Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla, Andrew Smith serves on YMKG’s Gaspar’s Grenadiers, the outreach committee that visits schools, hospitals and other community organizations. We met up with Andrew and his wife, Cali Smith, to talk about what Gasparilla means to them, the importance of giving back to the community and why they love raising their family in Tampa Bay.

TBPM: How does it feel to be a part of this Tampa legacy?

AS: We are so fortunate to live in this community. Tampa is unlike any other city in the world, and one of the reasons is that we have this month-long celebration of Gasparilla. There is something for everyone – music, art, film, races, parades – and the foundation for all of it is carving out time where we can join together as a community for no other reason than to have fun and celebrate one another.

TBPM: The Buccaneers are celebrating a longstanding legacy as well, with 50 years in Tampa Bay. Is game day another tradition you love to celebrate with your own kids?

AS: Every day is game day in the Smith family! And for those that don’t know us, Cali is the athlete (and yes, she regularly reminds me that she is the only one in the house that has multiple state titles and is in her high school hall of fame). One thing our kids enjoy most about sports in Tampa is our mascots. If it involves Thunder Bug, Captain Fear or DJ Kitty, we will be there.

TBPM: When you meet people who are new to the area, how do you explain Gasparilla?

AS: I usually go for the wow factor. We know how to throw a party here in Tampa, and we shouldn’t be shy to brag about it. We host the third largest parade in the country, behind the Macy’s Thanksgiving and Rose Bowl parades. We throw the largest flotilla invasion in the country. Our Children’s Parade is the largest in the country... Pirate ship? Cannons?

Fireworks? Sunshine? We have all of those, too.

TBPM: The krewes do a lot to give back to our community.

Why do you feel this is so important?

AS: Such a great question, and often overlooked by the excitement of Invasion. Most Krewes (over 50 in total now!) engage in charitable activities throughout the course of the year. One of the many rewarding activities we get to do in YMKG is raising money for our Community Foundation. With some of these funds from this year, we surprised 10 local high school seniors with scholarships.

TBPM: The Junior League of Tampa recognized you as its Inspiring Leader of the Year in 2023. Tell us about this recognition.

CS: 2023 was an incredible moment in time for the Diaper Bank. It was in this year that we implemented a few operational changes to magnify our impact. I had the honor to be chair that year, but really, I had amazing women on that committee with me who provided unwavering support. Specifically, Meaza Morrison and Charlesy Roman deserve a lot of this credit! Together, we were able to distribute over 1 million diapers to families in need across Hillsborough County, which was double what we had done the year prior.

TBPM: What do you love about living in Tampa Bay? AS: Hands down, the people. We are the perfect blend of Southern Hospitality and Midwest Nice.

TBPM: And because we ask everyone this question … what are your favorite things to do as a family in Tampa Bay? CS: How long do you have? We have so many favorites! When we aren’t at a Rays, Bucs or Lightning game … You can usually find us at Kate Jackson Park or Julian B Lane Park, riding bikes on Bayshore, enjoying Chill Bros ice cream at Armature Works, catching a movie on the lawn at Sparkman Wharf or strolling down Riverwalk. We love trips to the Straz, Florida Aquarium, Zoo Tampa and Busch Gardens, too. In the summer, you can usually find us looking for shells and making sandcastles at Pass-A-Grille Beach.

TBPM: Have you been able to take any of your kids on the float for the Children’s Parade? If not, what are you most looking forward to about sharing this experience with them?

AS: Our oldest, Andi, is a seasoned veteran at this point, and Walker has one SantaFest Parade under his belt.

TBPM: Cali—you are also a member of the Junior League of Tampa, which also has deep roots in Tampa. Why is it important to you to volunteer with this organization, and what would you tell other women who are thinking about joining?

CS: When I moved to Tampa for Andrew, I really did not know anyone else here in the community. Andrew encouraged me to join the Junior League to meet other women and make friends. His mom, Diane Smith, was a very active member of the Junior League and is still a sustainer today. As a family, we believe in paying it forward and that it is very important to give back to your community. The Junior League makes it easy, fun and seamless to volunteer your time. I encourage virtually everyone I meet to join or support the Junior League.

Pirate-themed recipes your crew will love

Create a fun Gasparilla-themed lunchbox with skull-shaped sandwiches as the star, paired with Pirate’s Booty as the “treasure,” mini tomatoes as colorful “gems” and cheeseand-meat skewers made with sword toothpicks for a pirateworthy touch. Arrange everything in small silicone cups to keep it tidy and let the playful pirate theme shine.

For the skulls: I use my skull shaped baking pan with a boxed brownie mix. For the savory skulls, I use puff pastry sheets and stuffed them with ground meat, onions and peppers for a cheesesteak vibe. Pizza skulls are always a hit and you can easily stuff with mozzarella cheese, pizza sauce and whatever your favorite toppings are.

One of my favorite and easiest things to do to inspire your Gasparilla vibes is taking a regular sheet cake and decorating it like a treasure map using chocolate bits as the trail, kiwi for palm tree leaves, Fruit Roll-Ups as your “X” and gold coin chocolates for your treasure!

A super fun and healthy snack activity to do with your kids is to make a pirate ship out of a huge naval orange, keeping the peel intact. You can use half of the orange skin as your pirate ship and then use the other half cut into strips with toothpicks to make your sails!

CILANTRO LIME CHICKEN DRUMSTICKS (AIR FRYER) INGREDIENTS: 6–8 chicken drumsticks 2 tablespoons olive oil Juice + zest of 1 lime

Nothing says Tampa like authentic Cuban black beans and rice. We love ours with cilantro, lime and marinated chicken.

Here’s a quick and easy recipe for Cuban black beans.

2–3 tablespoons chopped cilantro

BLACK BEANS & RICE

1 teaspoon chili powder (or smoked paprika)

INGREDIENTS: 1 can black beans (undrained) 1–2 tablespoons olive oil

3 garlic cloves, minced 1 teaspoon cumin

½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon pepper Optional: 1–2 teaspoons honey for a light glaze

½ small onion, finely chopped 2–3 garlic cloves, minced

DIRECTIONS:

1 teaspoon cumin

1. Mix marinade: In a bowl combine olive oil, lime juice/zest, cilantro, garlic, cumin, chili powder, salt, pepper, and honey if using.

1 teaspoon oregano 1 bay leaf (optional but authentic) Salt + pepper to taste Splash of vinegar (about 1–2 teaspoons) or lime juice

2. Coat drumsticks: Add chicken and toss well. Let marinate 15–30 minutes (or up to overnight).

3. Air fry: Place drumsticks in a single layer in the air fryer.

Optional: a pinch of sugar to balance the flavors

4. Cook: Air fry at 380°F for 18–20 minutes, flipping halfway, then increase to 400°F for 3–5 minutes to crisp the skin.

DIRECTIONS:

5. Finish: Squeeze extra lime over the top and sprinkle with fresh cilantro. It turns out crispy, citrusy and so good with rice, beans or inside bowls!

1. In a small pot, heat olive oil and sauté onion for 2–3 minutes until softened.

2. Add garlic, cumin and oregano; cook 30 seconds until fragrant.

3. Pour in the can of black beans with the liquid and add the bay leaf.

4. Simmer 10 minutes to thicken slightly.

5. Season with salt, pepper and a splash of vinegar or lime to brighten the flavor.

6. Remove bay leaf and serve over rice, with chicken or inside bowls.

Weedon Island Preserve

MORE GREAT HIKES FOR FAMILIES: NEW YEARS DAY OR ANY DAY Here are a couple more hikes our family has enjoyed that are perfect for this time of year.

One of my family’s favorite annual traditions is ringing in the New Year with a hike or nature walk on New Year’s Day. We’ve made it through to the best weather of the year for us here in Tampa Bay, so get outside and enjoy it! Let’s explore one of our all-time favorite family hikes to take advantage of during this lovely jacket weather.

Weedon Island Preserve is located just over the Gandy Bridge from Tampa, in Pinellas County, through winding back roads and tons of mangrove bays. The proximity and ease of access of the Weedon Island trails make this walk an easy choice for families. There are four main trails with boardwalks that connect to a Visitor's Center with a nice, big parking lot and indoor and outdoor bathrooms.

WAYS TO PLAY Start and end your walk at the Visitor’s Center, called the “Cultural & Natural History Center” because it has way more to offer than your typical Visitor’s Center. There are some truly great interactive exhibits to help us learn about our natural ecosystem in Tampa Bay, and the staff is wonderful with answering questions, in case anyone else’s youngster is going through their “why?” phase. But we like to save the exhibits for after our hike.

After an initial pit stop, start off by checking out a Junior Ranger backpack from the front desk (in exchange for an adult’s I.D.), full of essentials like binoculars to use on the trail.

With it comes a Junior Ranger Activity Guide Book with activities to do along the trail. If you complete just one activity, you get your very own Junior Ranger Badge!

Then, off to explore. Pick your trail, or choose a couple. One includes a lookout tower to climb.

Be sure to look out for different kinds of birds, crabs, lizards, turtles, raccoons and fish.

When you’re ready for a break, take some time to check out the exhibits inside, which include interactive mangroves, water table simulators and magnetic native FL pottery which was fun to rebuild as a family. There are also a few games, plus a 15-minute video in a theater room.

NATURE WALK PRO TIP: Kids love treasure maps! Turn your nature walk into a quest for lost loot by adding a hand-drawn map with real landmarks to help your kids anticipate what’s coming next and to help pay attention for anything fun along the way. If you have a sneaky partner, one of you can distract while the other hides your treasure along the path.

Boyd Hill Nature Preserve 1101 Country Club Way S., St. Petersburg This is another of our go-to hikes, located in southern Pinellas County, with an awesome visitor’s center, a playground and even a Birds of Prey Aviary where you can see bald eagles and owls up close.

Little Manatee River State Park 215 Lightfoot Road, Wimauma If you’re willing to drive a little farther, this spot has some beautiful, more rugged hikes along Little Manatee River in the Ruskin/Apollo Beach area.

Sunken Gardens 1825 Fourth St. N., St. Petersburg The ideal place for a picnic in St. Pete that you’ve never thought of – we did our New Year’s Day walk here last year, packed a lunch and had the best time lounging on one of their lawns.

Eureka Springs Park 6400 Eureka Springs Road, Tampa Super short and sweet, this walk is right by the Florida State Fairgrounds, includes a small greenhouse and is great for strollers.

The annual Hillsborough County Hiking Spree is going on now through March 31, and all you have to do is complete at least eight hikes from the official trail list to earn fun rewards like medallions and patches; hcfl.gov/residents/parks-and-leisure/hiking-spree.

A Family Guide to Visiting Your Farmers Market

Many folks resolve to eat healthier in the new year. Luckily for us Floridians, the Sunshine State’s farmers markets are in full swing. So locking into healthier eating feels less like deprivation and more like a day full of fresh air, live music and exciting new flavors. Here are some tips for a morning of family fun at the market.

Go early. Cooler temps + smaller crowds = happy kids.

Bring snacks. This may seem like bringing sand to the beach. But even in a place that sells food, backup snacks can be a godsent. That bag of Goldfish or applesauce pouch buys you extra time as you decide how much artisanal granola to buy.

Use your resources. Some farmers markets offer coloring sheets, seed planting or other kid-friendly activities. Visit the welcome table to see what’s available.

Bring a scavenger hunt or bingo game. Search online for a printable checklist—say, veggies in every color of the rainbow, items that start with each letter of the alphabet or five things they’d put on pizza. For younger kids, use pictures—a tomato, a flower, a dog and so on.

Give them a job. Enlist kids to choose a new-to-them food and ask the farmers for suggested ways to cook it, count out money for your purchases or photograph all the colorful produce.

Plan an at-home taste test. Select a few fruits or veggies to sample, cut them into bite-sized pieces and score them based on appearance, texture and flavor. You can choose a variety of foods or stick with a theme, like a citrus taste test with different varieties of oranges.

Kids to Know: Bodhi Kai & SARAH

SCUBAnauts International, combining curiosity with hands-on conservation, is home to some of the most dedicated ocean stewards in Tampa Bay. Among them are Second Class SCUBAnauts Bodhi Kai (14) and Sarah (15). The two divers understand the power of leadership and the importance of environmental responsibility. Through research missions, cleanup dives and opportunities to learn from scientists, SCUBAnauts discover, beyond the underwater world, their own strengths and future paths.

TBPM: What first inspired you to join Scubanauts International, and what do you love most about being part of the program?

Bodhi Kai: In addition to diving and science, I love SCUBAnauts' emphasis on leadership.

Through outreach events and science projects, we build confidence and develop skills that really matter.

Sarah: SCUBAnauts first caught my attention because of how dedicated and passionate they are about protecting the marine environment. What I love most is making positive impacts underwater with the close friends I’ve made.

TBPM: Can you share an underwater moment that reminded you why you’re in the program?

Bodhi Kai: While earning my advanced certification in Jupiter, Florida, the visibility was at least 80 feet. I saw massive goliath groupers, sharks and an eight-foot green moray eel. It made me realize how lucky I am to dive and helped me appreciate my mom’s dive stories.

Sarah: During a summer expedition in Grenada, we did a cleanup dive. Seeing reef damage caused by fishing nets and lines made me realize that I was there for a real purpose.

TBPM: Recently, at the Circle of Heroes Memorial, a reef featuring veteran memorial statues, you dove with a veteran. What was that experience like?

Bodhi Kai: I took part in the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge navigation event.

The friendly competition and the chance

to partner with a veteran who shared their knowledge and experience gave me a unique team experience, especially as a newer diver.

Sarah: I dove in Summerland Key with members of the Combat Wounded Veteran Challenge and was astonished by what they accomplished underwater despite physical disabilities. Their determination and dedication made the experience priceless.

TBPM: SCUBAnauts emphasizes leadership and service. How do you see those values shaping your future?

Bodhi Kai: I believe these qualities will be important in school, my future career and especially in advocating for ocean conservation and environmental concerns.

Sarah: SCUBAnauts has helped me take responsibility and become a more selfless person. These values have made me more confident in tackling challenges, and I know they’ll benefit my future.

TBPM: Many SCUBAnauts go on to become military personnel, scientists, engineers, even astronauts. What big goals are you working toward?

Bodhi Kai: I’m interested in a career on or in the ocean. I love diving, sailing and marine sciences, and I’ve considered naval architecture, marine engineering or ocean robotics—fields that combine my love for the ocean with my interest in technology and physics.

TBPM: Why do you think protecting Florida’s reefs matters for kids and families in Tampa Bay? Bodhi Kai: Florida’s reefs are the only coral reefs in the continental United States.

They’re beautiful, diverse ecosystems that help keep our oceans healthy and protect our communities from storms.

Sarah: Even though we don’t live right on the reef, they still matter to Tampa Bay. Healthy reefs keep water cleaner, protect coasts from storms, and support strong fishing.

TBPM: What is one thing you wish every kid knew about the ocean?

Bodhi Kai: The ocean affects every part of our planet, from the weather to the life of every organism, including us. If every kid understood that, they’d want to protect it.

Sarah: The ocean isn’t just an endless void of water. It’s a completely different world full of amazing marine life worth protecting.

TBPM: What was the most challenging part of becoming a diver, and what helped you push through?

Bodhi Kai: Performing the underwater skills, especially removing my mask, was the hardest. My mom, who’s a dive instructor, taught me tricks that helped. Practice made me more comfortable.

Sarah: Adapting to underwater environment, things like visibility and currents, was challenging. Trusting myself, trusting my buddy, and seeing tough conditions as opportunities to improve helped me through.

Christina McCue Hoek, founder and CEO of The Spiral Staircase, hopes to provide the women-centered space to help them realize those goals. A Tampa native and former educator, Christina leads with empathy and intention. The Spiral Staircase is a community that supports women, across life’s seasons, in their pursuits of growth and belonging.

TBPM: What inspired you to create The Spiral Staircase?

CMH: I felt a gap in Tampa Bay — a community full of remarkable women but without a space designed specifically for us. I kept hearing the same thing: “I want connection and inspiration, but I don’t know where to find it.” The Spiral Staircase grew from that need. I envisioned a place where women could gather, grow, reset and leave feeling more like themselves. That intention still guides everything we do.

TBPM: What has been the most rewarding part of The Spiral Staircase? The biggest hurdle?

CMH: The greatest joy has been watching this community come alive.

Hearing women say, “I feel so comfortable here,” or “I didn’t realize how much I needed this,” makes every challenge worth it. Seeing women in all seasons of life find belonging has been incredibly meaningful. The hardest part has been building something new in real time. We’ve had to pivot often as we learned what women truly wanted from this space.

Balancing our original vision with the need to stay flexible hasn’t always been easy, but those shifts ultimately made us better and more inclusive.

TBPM: Is there a moment that reminded you why this work matters?

CMH: Recently, a woman toured the space feeling overwhelmed about her next steps. After talking through her goals, she told me she felt relief knowing she’d be surrounded by women who could support and encourage her. Moments like that show the power of positive community.

TBPM: How has motherhood influenced your leadership?

CMH: Motherhood is at the heart of this entire concept. Becoming a mom made me acutely aware of how much women need connection and spaces that honor all the roles we hold. It taught me to lead with empathy, think about accessibility and belonging, and ask one guiding question: Does this make women feel supported and seen?

Motherhood has shaped how I lead, and I’m grateful my kids get to see me build something meaningful. On school days off, they come with me, and a quick hug from them before returning to supporting our members reminds me exactly why The Spiral Staircase exists — to help women thrive in every season.

TBPM: What do you love most about raising a family in Tampa Bay? CMH: Tampa Bay is home. I grew up here, attended the Academy of the Holy Names and later returned as a teacher. Now, raising my children here, I feel that same warmth and sense of possibility. Tampa shows up for its people, and that spirit deeply influences The Spiral Staircase.

The Tampa Bay community is the blueprint for the environment we’re creating: supportive, rooted and inspiring.

TBPM: What’s ahead for 2026?

CMH: We’re excited to expand our ecosystem of members. Our members range from career coaches to speech therapists to photographers and physicians. Together, they form a powerful Little Black Book of expertise. Corporate memberships are taking off, and collaboration among members continues to inspire us. In 2026, we’re focused on deepening connection, offering more opportunities for women to grow their businesses and ensuring The Spiral Staircase remains a place where women feel at home.

TBPM: One message for Tampa Bay moms entering the new year?

CMH: You’re doing great. Lean on your community. You’re not meant to do this alone. Give yourself grace, take care of your wellbeing and remember that support makes everything feel lighter. You’re doing an amazing job.

Relentless Momentum: Rob Higgins Leads USF Athletics into a New Era

Rob Higgins, the University of South Florida’s first CEO of Athletics, has a meaningful history with the school. Long before his signature green tie and the university’s surge in national visibility, Higgins served as a ball boy for USF’s men’s basketball team. When he aged out of the job, the staff didn’t replace him. They promoted him. Higgins became a student manager—a role that charted the course for one of Tampa Bay sports’ most influential careers. Long-time leader of the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, Higgins is the strategist behind defining events for Tampa Bay’s athletic boom: Super Bowls, NCAA championships and Frozen Fours. Higgins’ path wasn’t linear, but it was built on a commitment to hard work.

FULL CIRCLE ROOTS USF is home base for some of Higgins’ most poignant life moments. Both of his parents as well as his sister are USF alumni. He also met his wife, Casey, on campus. During a recent, successful battle with colorectal cancer, USF Health cared for him. “So many touchpoints throughout my life have been positively impacted by USF,” Higgins says.

“Having the opportunity to lead the athletic department is amazing.”

A CAREER BUILT ON PURPOSE Though seemingly constantly in motion, Higgins moves with purpose. Throughout grade school and high school, Higgins dreamed of being a basketball coach. College changed that. While helping the basketball program, he began gravitating toward administration.

“By the time I graduated from USF, I was on a track toward athletic administration,” he says.

Post-graduation, Higgins managed athletic facilities and events for four years. The next 21 years were spent at Tampa Bay Sports Commission, where Higgins was instrumental in shaping the region’s sports landscape. For many, that two-decade run alone would be a full career. Higgins, who describes his return to USF as a “dream come true,” has another chapter to write.

USF’S MOMENT MEETS ITS LEADER USF is in a period of rapid growth academically, athletically and structurally. Tampa Bay’s media market, the largest in Florida and the 11th largest in the country, supports USF’s ascent. Football is experiencing one of its strongest seasons in recent memory, basketball is attracting renewed excitement and a brand-new on-campus football stadium is on the horizon.

“A stadium on campus is a significant game-changer for both the campus and the community,” Higgins notes. “The momentum is here, and we want to turn that momentum into a movement.”

In early December, USF announced Brian Hartline (formerly offensive coordinator for Ohio State University) as its head football coach. Higgins is intent on ensuring USF Athletics earns its rightful place within not only the hierarchy of Tampa Bay’s sports environment, but the nation’s as well.

DEVELOPING THE WHOLE STUDENT-ATHLETE USF Athletics supports the whole student, not just the athlete. With 500 student-athletes across multiple sports, Higgins emphasizes that the university’s role goes far beyond wins and losses. “We put the highest priority on the mental, physical, emotional and professional development of our student-athletes.”

The commitment to holistic development was on display at Dine Like a Pro, a recent etiquette and networking dinner hosted for USF athletes.

An etiquette coach taught students how to navigate a professional dinner, from which utensils to use with each course to how to properly enter a chair from the left. For Higgins, walking around campus the following morning and hearing students talking about the event “was awesome.” The experience’s value was not in learning about table manners. Higgins believes there is value in preparing young people to carry themselves with confidence and professionalism out in the world.

THE PARENT PERSPECTIVE Higgins raised two children through competitive school sports. His daughter, Lainey, plays volleyball for Oglethorpe University. His son, Landon, played soccer for Jesuit High School. Higgins understands firsthand what today’s student-athlete families are navigating.

Accordingly, he encourages families to let kids explore widely. “Trying new things is how you find your passion,” he says. “I thought my passion was coaching, but athletic administration became an even greater fit.

Without trying new things, you might stop short of discovering what you’re truly meant to do.”

Of course, hard work must remain a constant. Intent on raising resilient kids, Higgins and his wife imparted the message that, in life, people get what they work for, not what they wish for. “Dreams are important,” Higgins expressed. “Fulfilling them requires a significant amount of work.” As a teen in the basketball gym, he learned to show up, treat others with respect and do the work. At the crossroads of work ethic and an open mind, student-athletes can be diligent in discovering their passions.

WHEN LIFE REDEFINES PURPOSE Higgins’ own life took an unexpected turn. On Sept. 3, 2024, during his first colonoscopy, he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. His father was battling cancer at the same time. “It was unimaginable,” Higgins recalls. “I would go in for treatment and then walk out to the waiting room and see my dad going in for his.”

Both men were treated at Moffitt Cancer Center (affiliated with USF’s College of Medicine). Just weeks apart, father and son rang the bell at Moffitt—symbolizing an end to treatment and a clean bill of health: “It’s a memory our family really cherishes. We learned not to take moments for granted.”

Higgins’ health journey clearly informs how he approaches the USF CEO of Athletics role: the urgency, the gratitude, the intentionality. He acknowledges running on little sleep: “I go to bed late and, essentially, it’s a nap.” His days, however, are filled with meaning. Every morning, he steps into a role that he views as a privilege.

RELENTLESS MOMENTUM AHEAD “I look forward to every interaction with our student-athletes. Their entire lives, they’ve dreamt of and worked toward playing college sports. We are here to help push them even further than they imagined.”

For the second half of the academic year, the USF campus will continue buzzing with sporting events, growing facilities and mounting energy.

Along with Higgins, while realizing lifelong dreams, USF student-athletes will continue putting in the work needed to uphold excellence.

Higgins conveyed: “We’re going to be relentless in everything we do.

From storytelling, to serving our student-athletes, to communicating both on and off campus. We will bring unmatched, relentless energy.”

Students are at the heart of USF Athletics—buoyed by the relentless energy of a leader who believes deeply in them. For now, Higgins is having too much fun to slow down for sleep.

Uncovering the Gift in Every Child

It’s easy to spot giftedness in some children, such as the precocious reader who devours books above their grade level or the math whiz who solves complex problems quickly.

But what about the child who mediates a conflict with empathy or who notices details others miss? The creative thinker who builds something from nothing?

The student who asks the kind of questions that change the direction of a lesson for the better?

These talents may fall outside a classic definition of “gifted,” even though they often are qualities of future leaders. When we broaden our perception of giftedness, we start to see it everywhere. Every student carries strengths, abilities and ways of thinking that, when nurtured, can grow into something extraordinary.

The challenge is creating an environment at home and at school where children can explore their interests and cultivate their talents.

Identifying these strengths requires parents and teachers to look beyond traditional measures and observe how children think, interact, create and respond to challenges.

It means offering choices, noticing what energizes each child, and stretching them just enough to spark growth without overwhelming them.

It also means understanding that standardized test scores, IQ tests and grades only tell part of a child’s story. Thomas Edison was removed from school after only three months and labeled “addled” by his teacher. His mother, however, believed in his potential, teaching him reading, writing and arithmetic while giving him space to explore his passions and curiosity. That same curious mind later built the laboratory that transformed modern life.

new tools for differentiating instruction, creating pathways for acceleration as well as remediation and designing lessons that spark curiosity in students across the spectrum of readiness.

Education Day is a Slam Dunk for Hillsborough County Public Schools!

Thousands of excited middle and elementary school students from Hillsborough County Public Schools streamed into the Yuengling Center to watch the USF Women’s Basketball Team take on Houston Christian.

It was Education Day for the Bulls—and the energy was off the charts.

For the past six years, USF has partnered with Hillsborough County Public Schools to offer free admission and lunch to our students for this special annual game. Each year, the event grows bigger, louder and more beloved.

This year set a new record: More than 9,300 students from 75 schools filled the arena. They arrived by the busload and met at the doors with pom poms, boxed lunches and an atmosphere buzzing with excitement. From there, they were treated to a full-throttle college basketball experience.

USF goes all-in to make the day unforgettable. Mascots from teams across Tampa Bay roamed the arena, dancing and high-fiving kids. The music playlist was curated perfectly for the “tween” crowd, and the cheerleaders and Sun Dolls kept the energy sky-high with routines that had every student cheering and waving their pom poms.

According to AnnMarie Courtney, Director of Partnership Engagement for the school district, the partnership is a win for everyone.

“Education Day creates an opportunity for women’s basketball to receive more exposure in elementary and middle schools,” Courtney says. “On the flip side, this opportunity allows our students to experience a collegiate game and perhaps see themselves attending college one day!”

And the students definitely felt the magic.

Edison from Westchase Elementary shared, “I like watching the cheerleaders!”

Ellie from Temple Terrace Elementary said, “I like getting the pom poms!”

And London from Belmont Elementary added, “I want to be like one of them!”

That’s what Education Day is all about … sparking dreams, building confidence and helping students imagine what’s possible.

So many left the Yuengling Center not only excited about basketball, but inspired by the teamwork, dedication and spirit they saw on the court.

A huge thank-you to the University of South Florida for welcoming so many of our students, and for helping shape the next generation of future Bulls.

TEACHER to Know Kelli Cameron

Grove Academy, I.B. Candidate School

The magic of a child’s early years of development drew Kelli Cameron to preschool education. These first years are the foundation on which kids build their learning journey. Recognizing the weight of this responsibility, Cameron puts a different spin on preschool education at her new school, Grove Academy.

Cameron fell in love with the International Baccalaureate (IB) program as a high school student, and that love solidified during her career as an IB elementary school teacher. We’re finding out what makes this program so special during the early years and how it inspired her as an educator to launch the first standalone I.B. preschool in Florida.

TBPM: What inspired you to become a teacher?

KC: I don’t remember a time when I wanted to be anything else! As a young child, I would ask my teachers for their used transparencies to take home and play pretend. My younger sister spent countless hours as a “student” in my bedroom schoolhouse. At 16, I began taking Early Childhood Education classes, and the rest was history! My understanding and connection with young children have always come naturally, and the opportunity to make a difference in their lives is the most fulfilling career I could imagine.

TBPM: Tell us a little bit about your background as an educator.

KC: I began my teaching career in Fort Myers, Florida, at an IB elementary school. After three years, I moved to Tampa and continued teaching at Roland Park K-8 IB Magnet School for eight more years. Most of my experience has been in first grade, though I’ve also taught second.

Since college, I dreamed of opening a preschool of my own, and last year, that dream became a reality with the opening of Grove Academy!

TBPM: What drew you to teaching in an IB school, and how has the program shaped you as a teacher?

KC: I graduated with my IB Diploma in high school and loved the rigor, global perspective and unique experiences I had as a student. Fast forward through a bachelor’s degree in special education and a master’s degree in early childhood education, and I knew being an IB educator was the only option for me.

IB challenges me as an educator in all of the best ways. I am encouraged to be creative with lesson planning and think outside the box while supporting students’ individual needs. Every day, I discover something new about myself and my students through collaboration and shared learning.

TBPM: Why did you decide to launch an IB preschool?

KC: As an educator and mother in Tampa, I noticed a dire need for quality preschools in the area. Unfortunately, Early Childhood Education has taken a backseat in recent years and isn’t prioritized as it should be. These early years are crucial, and all families deserve a preschool setting that supports and nourishes their children’s development. I was searching for a school that checked all of the boxes for my daughter and

came up empty-handed. It seemed like the perfect time to fill the gap for other families as well.

TBPM: What makes IB so special at the preschool level?

KC: IB at the preschool level is pure magic! The kids are exploring and inquiring about the world around them. The staff is listening to students’ interests and questions to help guide instruction. Students practice using their voice and making choices independently. They are growing and progressing in all eight areas of early childhood development while making real-world connections and becoming successful, well-rounded, little humans!

TBPM: As a mom of two young children, you see how important the early years are for a child’s education. How does it feel knowing you are helping to build a strong foundation for a child’s educational journey?

KC: I feel incredibly honored that parents have chosen to put their trust in Grove Academy for their child’s early development. Choosing a school is one of the hardest decisions as a parent, and I don’t take that decision lightly. It is incredibly rewarding to see the kids’ growth over time. It fills me with pride and purpose knowing our students leave our school with a love for learning and the confidence to build a brighter future.

TBPM: Anything else you want to add about your school?

KC: Grove Academy is a unique preschool experience that provides the IB PYP Early Years curriculum to students aged 3 through 5. All instruction occurs in small groups of six or fewer students per teacher.

Students are grouped based on skills and standards they are acquiring, rather than age. This allows our students to learn and grow at their own rate and our teachers to provide a truly individualized learning environment for the kids.

TBPM: What are some of your favorite things to do as a family in Tampa Bay? KC: When the weather is nice, we love to have picnics at Henry B. Plant Park. Our go-to family dinner spot is Cappy’s Pizza, followed by Chill Bros ice cream. Zoo Tampa, Tampa Bay Lightning games and Riverwalk are also favorites!

Growing Families Through Adoption Across the Tampa Bay Area

Every child deserves to thrive in a loving home, and as the lead agency charged with administering the child welfare system in Hillsborough County, the Children’s Network of Hillsborough County (CNHC) has been connecting kids with families, leading to more than 1,200 adoptions since July 2022.

A STRONG FOUNDATION With child welfare at the core of the CNHC, the network partners with more than 70 community organizations all across the Tampa Bay region, including mental health professionals and business leaders.

PASSPORT TO ADOPTION: THE ADVENTURE CONTINUES

For their second year in a row, the CNHC, along with legislative leaders and the Junior League of Tampa Bay, came together at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay to recognize National Adoption Day. “We fostered a partnership with Busch Gardens Tampa Bay that allowed us to host our event here, creating a better experience for the families, because before this, it was at the courthouse," says Rosaline Stuckey, director of adoptions at Children's Network of Hillsborough.

The adoption festivities included breakfast for the families, provided by the Junior League of Tampa Bay, and a heartwarming story from Joel and Cesar Cruz, who are now loving parents to three children with the help of Children’s Network of Hillsborough County.

“This is the largest event that we’ve had here, and we’re so excited about that,” Stuckey says.

“It has been a culmination of efforts between

the Children’s Network adoption staff, with the support of our community partners and case management organizations, to make all of this possible.”

To recognize the network’s impact and commitment to finding every child a loving home, a special proclamation was made by the Board of County Commissioners for Hillsborough County, declaring Nov. 14, 2025, as National Adoption Day. This celebration, proclamation and its official proceedings, held on Nov. 14, finalized adoptions for 52 children, including 10 sibling groups, marking the largest Adoption Day event for the network. But the helping hands and loving support didn’t stop there.

After each official proceeding, the families were encouraged to visit booths from local post-adoption support providers in the pavilion, like Camelot Adoption Support and the Sylvia Thomas Center. “This helped remind these new families that we’re here if you need anything,” says Stuckey. Because every child deserves to thrive in a loving home.

Tracii’s Miracle

Tanica stood at her daughter’s bedside in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, seemingly trapped in a nightmare.

Hours earlier, in a freak accident at the family’s home, 3-year-old Tracii had been pinned between the car and the wall of the house. Her injuries were extensive.

“I was devastated,” Tanica says. “I didn’t want to lose my baby.”

Tracii had been airlifted by the LifeLine transport team to Johns Hopkins All Children’s for advanced life-saving care.

Pediatric trauma surgeon Christopher Snyder, M.D., then a surgical fellow, will never forget his first encounter with the child. Snyder had seen traumas of all kinds. But he had not seen anything like this in a 3-year-old.

“Tracii’s pelvis was crushed and there was extensive injury to her perineum, her private area,” Snyder says.

The skilled surgical team, including Snyder, attending surgeon David Kays, M.D., as well as teams of urologists and orthopaedic surgeons worked to stabilize the young patient before she was transferred to the PICU. This first medical victory marked the beginning of a long road to healing.

OVERCOMING OBSTACLES Tracii would require many subsequent surgeries and a high level of specialty care.

To reassemble her pelvis, orthopaedic surgeons implanted something called an external fixator. This involves drilling pins into the pelvic bones and then securing them to each other with metal rods.

For the first month, the fixator kept Tracii largely confined to her hospital bed. But the little girl rarely let it dampen her spirits.

“Tracii had a very enthusiastic personality,” Snyder says. I think that helped her get through that difficult time.”

After 10 long weeks, Tanica was able to take her daughter home.

“It was amazing care,” Tanica says. “Her doctors and nurses loved her.

They made her feel happy.”

MAJOR MILESTONE When Tracii turned 5, it was time for a final reconstructive surgery.

TRACII TODAY The girl who triumphed over trauma walks into the hospital’s bright new physical therapy space and embraces those who’ve helped nurture her recovery.

During the 15-hour procedure, doctors were able to bring the intact pelvic organs, which had retracted higher into Tracii’s abdomen, back into place and reconstructed them where necessary.

Tracii is 12 years old. She is lovely, with dark eyes and a warm smile.

Other than a small brace on her foot, there is no other visual hint of her former injuries. As she grows into a young woman, Tracii’s life won’t look exactly like her peers. Her medical needs will be different.

What happened the next day amazed Tracii’s mom.

But she doesn’t have to miss a beat.

“She got up out of bed and started walking,” Tanica says. “I said, ‘Tracii, you just had reconstructive surgery!’”

“I believe her life will inspire people,” Tanica says.

It was a sweet, victorious moment after such a long medical journey.

And she’s ready to take on the world.

After all, Tracii knows something about overcoming.

GET A NEW YEAR'S REFRESH

Out with the old, in with the new. The popular expression is the perfect mantra for a fresh start in 2026. We asked organization experts Hillary Forst and Jamie Andrieu of Sorted and Styled to share their favorite tips and tools.

TBPM: Why is the new year a good time for kids and parents to start fresh?

S&S: January is the perfect excuse for a refresh because it’s a natural “clean slate” after the holidays! It gives everyone a chance to hit the reset button, find homes for all the new gear and simplify those daily routines. Less stuff, less stress and more calm for the whole family.

What's not to love about that?

TBPM: Do we need to let things go to get organized? In other words, do you recommend a new year’s purge?

S&S: Absolutely! Releasing the old is the first step to welcoming the new, so a New Year's purge is a great move to create both physical and mental space for fresh starts. By clearing out the clutter, you signal to yourself and your family that you're ready for a more streamlined, organized year ahead.

TBPM: Nagging our children to pick up their rooms is exhausting. How can we set them up for success so it’s easy to keep their space neat and organized?

S&S: The key to keeping kids organized is creating a simple system with clear boundaries for their belongings, so mess doesn't become an overwhelming pile. Some immediate steps parents can take: • Introduce the “One In, One Out” rule: For every new item that comes in, an old item in the same category must leave, which teaches mindfulness and prevents clutter from accumulating.

• Use labeled bins for broad categories: Designate large, opaque and clearly labeled bins (with words and pictures) for broad categories like “Blocks” or “Art Supplies” to make cleanup simple and fast for the child.

TBPM: Do you have any hygiene game-changers for kids?

S&S: Absolutely! Parents can: • Create a “Morning Launchpad” by setting up a designated caddy or bin with all essential items like their toothbrush, face wash, etc. near the sink or in their room. This eliminates the “I can't find it” excuse and streamlines their morning routine.

• Install a Hamper System by placing clearly labeled, separate hampers in their bathroom or bedroom. Making the “put away” step the path of least resistance reinforces good habits and keeps wet towels and dirty clothes off the floor.

TBPM: Share your tips for organizing a homework space for kids.

S&S: The most effective homework space is one where your child feels comfortable and focused, so begin by choosing a spot that allows for deep concentration, whether it's a quiet corner in the kitchen or a dedicated desk. To ensure everything is at their fingertips and minimize distractions, create a "Tool Kit Station" — a portable caddy filled with all essential supplies like pencils, paper and scissors — that can be easily moved or stored when not in use. Lastly, keep the surface clear of nonschool related clutter to visually say that it’s time to focus.

TBPM: We parents need help, too! What’s a good place to start?

S&S: The “Drop Zone” area, typically near the entrance, makes a monumental difference in home organization by immediately containing incoming clutter like keys, mail and bags, preventing mess migration throughout the house.

FORST AND ANDRIEU’S ORGANIZATION ESSENTIALS: • 3-tier rolling carts • Clear and concise labels for easy identification and retrieval • Stackable bins that utilize vertical space to exponentially increase storage capacity in closets and pantries • Items that are practical but also visually pleasing to encourage consistent use and maintenance by seamlessly integrating attractive storage into the home
