Choice of music leads to ARSON

Three men were visiting a tavern next to the Cinderella Hostel in Boksburg when, according to witnesses, an argument started over the type of music that should be played. According to one witness, who did not want her name mentioned, one of the men wanted his choice of music played, but others felt that, since he found them at the tavern listening to the music, he should therefore listen to the music and not impose his preferences on them. An argument ensued and the man was allegedly stabbed by the two men he had been arguing with. He then left the tavern, but around twelve o’clock the same evening returned and allegedly set fire to the shack of one of the men he had been arguing with earlier that same evening. According to some witnesses the fire was started after fuel was poured on to the shack and then set alight. Residents and fire fighters struggled to put out the flames, but to no avail - and the fire spread. By morning all that remained was a pile of charred and twisted sheets of metal. According to Lt Ngobese, spokesperson for the Boksburg Police Station, a case of arson was opened and is being investigated. Fifteen shacks were destroyed in the fire. Although residents lost all their possessions, no one was injured. The Ward 32 councillor, Clr Hendricks, assisted residents by calling in the disaster management team which provided the victims with HOMELESS: as a result of a fire that razed 15 shacks to the ground temporary assistance.

“I did not see what happened, because I was on the other side of the hill, but I heard the impact from there and it was very loud,” one person told the tame TIMES on Monday 28 September at the scene of a tragic accident that claimed the life of one man. According to William Ntladi, Emergency Management Services spokesperson, they responded to a call they received about an accident at 12:59 in which the driver of

a white Nissan bakkie was driving west on the Rondebult Road slipway that flows into Commissioner Street, Boksburg, when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on into an oncoming Toyota bakkie moving east on Commissioner Street. Another vehicle, a VW Polo, travelling in the same eastbound lane, could not stop in time and crashed into the rear end of the Toyota bakkie. The front part of the VW Polo was lodged

underneath the rear end of the Toyota bakkie and it eventually took three separate towtrucks to pull the two vehicles in different directions in order to pull them apart. The passenger of the VW Polo sustained serious injuries to her chest and back and was transported to Sunward Park Hospital. The driver of the same vehicle escaped the accident unharmed. The driver of the Toyota bakkie sustained

tame TIMES Boksburg & Benoni are going PINK this October The incidence of breast cancer among South African women is increasing and it is one of the most common cancers among women in South Africa. It is the most prevalent cancer amongst white and Asian women and the second most common cancer among black and coloured women. Facts about breast cancer: • Early detection of the condition can lead to effective

treatment and a positive prognosis. About 90% of patients survive for many years after diagnosis when breast cancer is detected at the early stages. • Regular self-breast examination and regular mammograms are key to early detection. • Presenting yourself early for treatment may result in more effective treatment, leading to a reduction in pain and suffering and a significant decrease in the

injuries to his “clavicle bone,” but refused to be taken to hospital. The driver of the white Nissan bakkie was declared dead on the scene. An Emergency Services member was overheard saying that the driver could have suffered a medical trauma while driving which then led to his losing control of the vehicle. However, no official response was given on whether this was what did, in fact, happen.

Man appears in court for CHILD PORN A 39-year-old man who was arrested on Wednesday 30 September, in Atlasville, Boksburg, appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday 2 October on charges of manufacturing, possession and distribution of child pornography. In an official statement from the South African Police Services: “A detective team from Gauteng [investigating] cases involving sexual exploitation of children [Wednesday 30 September] arrested a Boksburg man for allegedly taking and posting photos of his girlfriend’s four-year-old daughter, sharing them with users as far as the United States of America. “After receiving and following up on information from their US colleagues, the specialised team working for the South African Police Service’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit based in Gauteng, arrested the suspect at his place of work in Boksburg. The 39-year-old suspect’s laptop was searched. “The suspect, whose online adventures were first detected by the Homeland Security of the US, and was eventually traced to South Africa, [appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday 02 October 2015]. He has been charged with manufacturing, possession and distribution of child porn. “The suspect is alleged to have taken as many as 50 pictures of the victim in naked poses and advertising them online, while the child’s mother was oblivious of what her daughter was being subjected to by her boyfriend. His online alias was known as APE Man. “During the arrest the police also seized three laptops, two external hard drives, two cellphones, three SD cards, a mini spy camera, a digital audio player and a Playstation console.” Women from the organisation ‘Women and Men against

Child Abuse’ were outside the court showing their solidarity and support for the victims of abuse and to protest against bail being granted to the accused. Victoria Ngobese, Operations Director of the organisation, told the media that they were present because, she said, “we have been following child pornography cases and working closely with the child protection units in Gauteng fighting [against] child pornography and we want to [put] pressure on the presiding officers, because we have seen police doing a great job in apprehending them, and we have support from the US, Belgium and other countries, but our own country is failing our victims, because this is seen as a lesser offence and it is been treated as a victimless crime. So we want to show that this is not a victimless crime. For child pornography to be manufactured a child is being violated.” She added that they “want to challenge the law and [ask] for prescriptions on sentencing, because we are seeing people getting off lightly.” She stated that the accused was arrested on similar charges previously but was never charged and was set free, so in their view he is a repeat offender and that is why they are calling for stricter child pornography laws to be passed. The case was held in-camera and no one from the media or public was allowed into the court room during the proceedings. The media was afterwards informed that the matter had

Pizza Del Forno supports Cupcakes of Hope

Pizza Del Forno’s head office started a cancer awareness and fundraising campaign by printing 11 000 pink pizza boxes. Various stores could purchase a number of these boxes at an additional one rand per box. The proceeds from these boxes are donated to various cancer organisations. But individual stores were also given the option of continuing with the cancer drive through various fundraising methods. The Pizza Del Forno store in Sunward Park, Boksburg, took on the challenge and kicked off their ongoing campaign on Saturday 26 September with a “Cupcakes 4 kids with cancer” day. “Cupcakes 4 kids with cancer” is part of a Cupcakes of Hope community-driven project that has as its aim “to create awareness and raise funds for children with life-threatening diseases.” Belinda, the managing owner of Pizza Del Forno Sunward Park, told the tame TIMES they decided to make this an ongoing drive in part because of how many of their customers opened up to them and shared their experiences of either losing loved ones because of cancer, or having to experience the trauma of dealing with a loved one who suffers with cancer. But, she says, she was also motivated by her staff’s positive attitude towards this drive when they told her that they realise that should this happen to one

of them or a family member that they hope others will reach out to support them, hence their support for an ongoing fundraising campaign. She thanked the staff and owners/ managers of the businesses in the Food Lovers Market shopping centre who contributed to the start of their drive: • Standard Bank and Nedbank staff • Food Lovers Market for their donation of cupcakes • Spur for the meal voucher • Liquor City • Janbre Art & Professional picture framing • The hairdresser at the centre • Montagu • Belinda’s sister • And all other businesses at the centre and patrons who contributed To support the ongoing drive, you can visit the Pizza Del Forno at the Food Lovers Shopping Centre in Sunward Park, Boksburg.

The risk factors for breast cancer

THE NEW BMW 3 SERIES.

Age - The risk of developing breast cancer increases as you get older. About one out of eight invasive breast cancers are found in women younger than 45, while about two of three invasive breast cancers are found in women age 55 or older.

Family history - Breast cancer risk is higher among women whose close blood relatives have this disease. Having one first-degree relative (mother, sister, or daughter) with breast cancer approximately doubles a woman’s risk. Having two first-degree relatives increases her risk about three-fold.

#40yearsof3

Personal history - A woman with cancer in one breast has a three to four times increased risk of developing a new cancer in the other breast or in another part of the same breast. This is different from a recurrence (return) of the first cancer. Dense breast tissue - Women with denser breast tissue (as seen on a mammogram) have more glandular tissue and less fatty tissue, and have a higher risk of breast cancer. Unfortunately, dense breast tissue can also make it harder for doctors to spot problems on mammograms.

Melting Pot National Choral FESTIVAL

MAYOR MONDLI GUNGUBELE

The rich heritage of South Africa’s choral tradition will be on display from 31 October to 1 November for the third instalment of the Ekurhuleni Melting Pot National Choral Tribute to OR Tambo Festival, at Carnival City. The festival promises to be a spectacular one after its successful launch at the Germiston Civic Centre on 26 September.

Helmed by the effervescent Umhlobo Wenene DJ, Putco Mafani and Chriselda Kananda, this year’s edition promises to be a stellar festival of choral bliss with the added lustre of chorally inclined musicians like Zakes Bantwini, national treasurer Sibongile Khumalo, world-renowned spin master Black Coffee, gospel powerhouses Solly Mahlangu, Sally Silver, Njabulo Madlala and Afro/folk sensation Nathi. The length and breadth of South Africa has been traversed in order to unearth the finest voices which will be taking aim at the R500 000 grand prize, making this the most sought after choral title in the country - and of course it takes place in Ekurhuleni, which has steadily established itself as the capital of choral music in South Africa. There is also something in it for connoisseurs of fine music as those who purchase the R250 ticket stand a chance to win a car. Those who have attended previous editions will testify to the calibre of quality performances that this festival dishes out and this year’s event looks set to be even better than the last. The selfless sacrifice of OR Tambo secured the liberation of this country as he worked tirelessly with the international community to alert the world to the oppression of a beautiful and soulful people. Tambo’s legacy is intertwined with the heritage of this country and in Heritage Month his contributions remain with us in the freedoms that we enjoy today. October is OR Tambo Month and as he was a lover of art and culture, a freedom fighter, composer

and former school choir conductor, the Melting Pot Festival is a fitting tribute to this giant of our country. “Choral music is food for the soul because it plays an important role in developing a sound fibre of the community,” says Ekurhuleni Muncipality Mayor, Mondli Gungubele. “The discipline required to execute a collective mandate is a pivotal skill to learn and extends beyond the choral space, but also to life and the workplace. We also remember that the stalwart of our liberation, OR Tambo, had a passion for choral music and even used to compose songs that were utilised to galvanise freedom fighters during the struggle.” The electric and indeed eclectic choral performances will perform in the following order: 1. His Majesty Choir (Swaziland) 2. Zwelitsha Adult Choir 3. Gauteng Choristers 4. SA Singers 5. Voice Of The Nation 6. African Chorus 7. Heavenly Voices 8. Bagale (Lesotho) 9. Serumula 10. Transnet Port Terminal “This event has become a critical core offering because of its nature and it is key in our strategy to market the city and the Ekurhuleni brand,” Gungubele concluded.

SA FILM AYANDA SCOOPED UP BY GLOBAL FESTIVALS

Ayanda, the highly anticipated new film by award-winning director Sara Blecher, and co-produced by actress and producer Terry Pheto of Tsotsi fame, is quickly building up a global audience. Worldwide, film festival organisers have been snapping up the local movie that tells the story of a young Afro-hipster making the transition to adulthood. The resolute 21-year-old, Ayanda (Fulu Mugovhani), who has a talent for taking neglected pieces of furniture and “bringing them back to love,” takes on the task of saving her father’s failing auto garage, eight years after his death. She does everything in her power to hold on to his legacy, while confronting the ups and downs of her own life. The film also stars Nigerian actor OC Ukeje, with a star South African cast including Ntathi Moshesh, Kenneth Nkosi, Jafta Mamabola, Thomas Gumede, Sihle Xaba and veteran star of stage and screen Vanessa Cooke. “The international attention from audiences around the world demonstrates that Ayanda is a high-quality title,” says Helen Kuun, CEO of Indigenous Film Distribution. “Local media too have responded extremely

To usher in the New Year, the City of Ekurhuleni will again host the South African Open Golf Championship, which will be held from 7 to 11 January 2016.

your world this week Mars’ bigger

ocean

NASA research suggests that Mars once had more water than Earth’s Arctic Ocean. According to NASA scientists, who, using ground-based observatories, measured water signatures in Mars’ atmosphere, a primitive ocean on the Red Planet once held more water than the Arctic Ocean. Scientists have since been searching for answers as to why this vast water supply had left the surface. “Our study provides a solid estimate of how much water Mars once had, by determining how much water was lost to space,” said Geronimo Villanueva, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the new paper. “With this work, we can better understand the history of water on Mars.” NASA’s Mars Exploration Program seeks to characterize and understand Mars as a dynamic system, including its present and past environment, climate cycles, geology and biological potential. (www.nasa.gov)

These dark, narrow, 100 meter-long streaks called recurring slope lineae flowing downhill on Mars are inferred to have been formed by contemporary flowing water. Recently, planetary scientists detected hydrated salts on these slopes at Hale crater, corroborating their original hypothesis that the streaks are indeed formed by liquid water. The blue color seen upslope of the dark streaks are thought not to be related to their formation, but instead are from the presence of the mineral pyroxene. Vladimir Putin has conscripted 150 000 new troops into the Russian army as the country unleashed a new wave of airstrikes in Syria, Daily Mail reported. This happened while Iran and Islamist group Hezbollah prepare for a major ground offensive. Hundreds of Iranian troops have arrived in Syria, backed by the country’s Lebanese allies, Hezbollah, and rebel fighters from Iraq and Afghanistan. A Lebanese source claimed that the Iranian ground forces were soldiers and officers,

not advisers. They are being supported by Russia’s warplanes, which bombed camps of rebel fighters trained by the CIA. Josh Earnest, the White House spokesman, said that Russia’s airstrikes in Syria were indiscriminate and risked prolonging the conflict indefinitely. He also claimed that Russia’s ‘’random’’ strikes on Syria’s enemies would draw the country deeper into the conflict. (www.dailymail.co.uk)

Eyewitness News reports have alleged there is reason to believe some Correctional Services officials may have helped Radovan Krejcir smuggle items into his prison cell, in the hope of making an escape attempt. According to the reports, Krejcir, convicted of drug dealing, kidnapping and attempted murder, had planned a dramatic escape from prison involving helicopters and luxury cars. During a recent raid of his cell, a 9mm pistol, four cellphones and other items were found hidden. An important diary was also found which may help police crack other cases. According to the reports, this was Krejcir’s fourth attempt to escape prison, but luckily information from intelligence sources prompted a raid on his cell. Several people have been questioned in relation to the event. Despite the find, police remain confident that they will be able to keep him behind bars. (Source: ewn.co.za)

consultancy, committed to worldclass service delivery within the country. Lekwa is dedicated to promoting value-added services and technical skills development in the broader southern African and African sphere of civil engineering discipline. After undergoing a six months training programme on diversity inclusion management, seven Lekwa staff members have been appointed as ambassadors for the programme and are expected to now pass through the training to the rest of the staff complement located in Alberton, Ermelo and Newcastle. This multi-year programme will lead to a new organisational culture, and assist in driving transformation and stuff development. Gert Smit, Director and Shareholder, adds “Our diversity programme is very much intertwined with our business goals and ambitions. This cross-pollination was important to developing a truly representative company that is also financially sustainable”.

SWING of things tame TIMES COMMUNITY CUP

2015

The annual tame TIMES Community Cup was held on 29 September at the Reading Golf Course. The day was a superb success and held some fun surprises at the prize-giving after a hot day on the golf course. The event is held every year in aid of the NG Kerk Alberton Suid, to assist with their many community projects, mainly in the South of Johannesburg.
