Saheti School management has spoken out against the use of social media as a tool for hate speech and cyberbullying. This follows national news coverage of incidents at the school involving an app developed by a Saheti learner, which was used to degrade and defame learners and teachers at the school. Mr Warwick Taylor, executive head of Saheti School, told the tame TIMES over the past week the school had been confronted by a serious social media issue with the creation of an app which allowed users to post completely anonymously. “This has unfortunately resulted in the publication of hate speech and the cyberbullying of a number of our students and some of our teachers. We view posts of this nature as totally inappropriate and cowardly,” he said. He explained the school’s management strongly condemned such actions and posts. “The school has always had a proud heritage of freedom of expression as enshrined

in our school constitution, which states that ‘everyone has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion.’ However, with these freedoms come responsibilities and it is never acceptable to use such platforms for abuse.” Mr Taylor explained the app in question did not moderate hate speech, defamation and insults. “What is clear from this situation is that anonymous platforms that do not have moderation, have and will continue to bring out the worst in people. Many of the comments brought to our attention target the child’s person and character. The school is doing all that it can to support those who have been hurt by the comments and where possible, to stop further abuse.” He concluded he was very disappointed by some of his students who over a fiveday period lost restraint and a sense of perspective in their posts and comments. “We have in the past called on the expertise of specialists such as Nikki Bush and Emma Sadleir in educating our students on the risks and dangers of social media platforms. We will continue to engage with such specialists around these issues.”

CHAOS: The crime scene in Bedfordview on Thursday morning last week the corner of Kloof and Van Buuren Roads, Bedfordview following an armed robbery. The chaotic scene also caused a great response from the public, especially on social media platforms. Thursday’s incident resulted in a flood of responses from residents on Facebook with one stating that he was off to the gym and was considering wearing a bullet proof vest for protection. “People are under the impression this incident occurred in Bedfordview. However, the vehicle only ended up in Bedfordview. The shootout itself occurred in another area,” said Gavin Henry, chairperson of the Bedfordview Community Policing Forum (BCPF) who explained Bedfordview had gotten a lot of bad publicity in recent years from high-profile shootings. “Just as Bedfordview is central and has access to all the major highways, it also provides an easy escape route for criminals. However, many of the incidents themselves did not happen in the area. Furthermore many have been hits and were not related to a prevalence of crime in the Bedfordview area. In one shooting, a man who worked in Pretoria was headed home to Kensington and was shot in Bedfordview. The crime was found to be a hit, so this was not a reflection of crime in the area.” He said compounding the apparent chaos of Thursday’s crime was the fact that a

TO A DEDICATED POLICEMAN Bedfordview police’s spokesperson Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi has been promoted and from now on will carry the title of Warrant Officer Nhlabathi. The dedicated policeman spoke of his excitement over the promotion: “I believe police work is a call and not a profession,” he said, explaining his passion for the service. He has been working in the Bedfordview area for the past 20 years. “From my work in the police force I have learned the value of perseverance,” he

said. “This is a job that requires a lot from you. There are incidents which are hard to erase from memory and which can be emotionally taxing but if you have the right support and passion for the job, then you will succeed.” He thanked his fellow policemen and family for their support over the years. house in Kloof Road, Bedfordview had caught fire around the same time. “So you had ambulances, EMPD vehicles and fire engines with blazing sirens coming through the area attracting everyone’s attention.” Henry advised residents to remain vigilant in taking necessary security precautions -

however, he emphasised that people did not need to become paranoid about Bedfordview being the new Wild West, as social media panic was often started without people having all the necessary facts.” Bedfordview police continue to investigate Thursday’s crime.

Some residents have called Bedfordview the new Wild West after a second incident involving shooting and a high speed car chase shook the area on Thursday morning last week. The incident happened during peak hour traffic and because of the heavy traffic, many motorists witnessed the two vehicles wrecked by the collision, and saw the blood left by a security official who was injured in the lower body during the shootout. Warrant Officer Mduduzi Nhlabathi, Bedfordview police spokesman, explained the shootout had actually happened nearby in Kensington and the security officials, who had been travelling carrying valuables, had driven their vehicle into Bedfordview in their efforts to escape armed assailants driving a white BMW. “The perpetrators shot at their car in Kensington, puncturing the car’s tyres and injuring one of the security officials,” he said. The car then collided with a civilian vehicle at the corner of Nicol and Arbroath Roads, Bedfordview, leaving chaos on the road during peak hour traffic. The white BMW remained unaccounted for and the suspects did not manage to seize any of the valuables. Warrant Officer Nhlabathi explained the security official had been taken to the Union Hospital in Alberton and that his injuries were not serious. This incident follows the recent collision of a suspect’s vehicle with a civilian vehicle at

Children spend so much time riding bikes and getting involved in adventure sports online. Why not let them experience the real thing? Mark Powell heads the XStation Park at Stoneridge Centre, believing children and teenagers should be encouraged to stay active. “We grew up riding bicycles, having adventures outdoors as we raced up and down hills, along roads, against our friends,” he said. However, as Powell explained, the reality is that it is no longer safe for youngsters to explore the great outdoors on their bikes and skateboards, as in the past. “They need somewhere they can go to just be kids and have fun.” He said he had worked with a physio in the past who had explained the benefits of risk sports to him. “Through these ‘risk sports,’ parts of the brain are developed that cannot be stimulated through remaining sedentary.” He explained the facility provided the perfect setting for children, and young adults, to ride scooters,

bicycles, roller skates, roller blades, J-boards, Heelys and skate boards in a safe, supervised environment at just R30 for three hours. The park is also the perfect venue for a birthday party and tables with umbrellas are situated on the premises, giving parents the perfect place to relax while their children get active. “We have great plans for the future and will be putting together an action-packed itinerary for 2016,” he said. One of these items will include a skate and ride fair, to be held early next year. “We have also introduced ‘expression sessions’ for younger children where they can use whatever kind of wheels they prefer, even tricycles and scooters, and we stock Heelys shoes (shoes with the wheel in the heel), which can also be used on our premises by children of all ages.” Visit www.xstation.co.za for more information. Instruction for skateboarding, biking, How to Heel, How to J-Board can also be downloaded from the site.

There’s putt putt… then there’s adventure golf. As its name suggests, Adventure Golf, Stoneridge Centre includes exciting, challenging courses in a fun, user-friendly environment. The golf facility offers a multi-level golfing terrain to explore with friends and family. It is a great way to stretch your legs and test your skill with the ball – and even if you don’t manage to get it in in the first five – or ten – or 20 tries – the aim of the game is fun. The models from Figures Models, Bedfordview, together with agency owner Sylvia Dash, spent a morning mastering the golfing greens at the centre. Probably the most memorable moment of the morning was the hole-in-one achieved by model Zenadene Lazarus, who seemed as surprised as the others by her incredible shot, since this was her first time playing adventure golf. The innovative course has three different courses designed according to difficulty level. Each of these courses has nine holes. The models opted for the ‘easy’ course but told the tame TIMES it was still challenging and they would be returning again to try to improve on their golfing strokes. The facility is open every day of the week, from 9am to 10pm and costs are R80 per adult, and R70 for children under 16 years of age. For more information contact www.adventuregolf.co.za. Compu-Kart Raceway offers an exciting Formula 1 experience for both children and adults. The state-of-the-art mini race vehicles allow for lap times to be recorded, while offering safe, easy-to-manage driving, as discovered by a group of enthusiastic young models from Figures Models, Bedfordview who decided to test-drive the cars around the specially designed racetrack. The Figures models arrived full of expectation, many ready to experience driving for the first time. Agency owner Sylvia Dash’s two daughters were among the beginner drivers – and Dash watched, at first apprehensive, as her girls put foot and around the racetrack at what seemed like breakneck speeds (the cars can go up to 65km/h – fast but manageable). The computerised system logs lap times, and they progressively decreased their lap times from 24 to 21 seconds, proving themselves to be more than just pretty faces. Still giddy from their racing experience, the models, who had just stepped out of their vehicles, related to the tame TIMES how they could feel the wind moving past the loose strands of their hair and the weight of their helmets as they raced around the course. The facility has an onsite podium to honour the winner of the day, and special touches, like a raceway style hot dog stand and exquisite race track décor, add to the complete raceway experience. The girls posed for a podium finish photo before leaving for their next adventure. For more information, visit www.compu-kart.co.za

EDENVALE TAKES BACK HER CROWN AS JEWEL OF THE EAST Heather Djunga heather.djunga@tametimes.co.za Community leaders, residents and businessmen came together on Wednesday morning last week to watch a breathtaking presentation of what can happen when people get together to dream big for their city. The presentation was on the new Edenvale Transport and Housing Hub (ETHH) development proposed for the area just behind De Bakery, Edenvale’s landmark windmill. This is a project of the Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) and is backed by the Ekurhuleni Metro. Within the next couple of years, a towering 20-storey ‘housing tower’ will change the skyline of the city, as it, and other components of the state-of-the-art facility take form. Ekurhuleni City Manager Kaya Ngema (right) has encouraged the community and local investors to support the Citybacked initiative explaining his love for the Ekurhuleni area: “The only thing we are lacking here is the sea … but we are working on this.” He said that he believed it was the responsibility of residents and key-players in the community to be cocreators in the future of the city. “Once in a while we need to have this kind of presentation where we sit

down together and dream,” he said. Alessio Lacovig, spokesperson for AOJ (Architects of Justice), the firm behind the project, said the ETHH will not only incorporate a magnificent housing tower with a revolutionary twisted, multi-level design but ‘hanging gardens’-style platforms of landscaped gardens, with leisure and recreation facilities, an education centre, a retail street, a public square, and a taxi port with magnificent arches. ECID chairman and director Dr Paolo Agostinetto said he had been blown away by the proposed development and its implications for the area. ECID director Sydwell Sundelowitz explained the area just off Van Riebeeck Avenue, behind De Bakery, had been like the eye in the centre of the storm for the past few decades. “Despite the whirlwind of activity and the development of the area around it, it has remained relatively unruffled by these changes.” He explained that early in 2014, the City had provided ECID with a proposal asking how the non-profit organisation would go about putting forth the greatest potential the area had to offer. “Through endless meetings … and coffee… and consultations with different experts we eventually came up with three key points for bringing out the potential of the area: these involved a focus on public transport, housing and education. With these three keys in mind, we embarked on a formal process to find an architect to carry out the process.” AOJ was chosen to take on the project because they were a local

company with a portfolio of excellence, with awards to accompany their achievements. In his address to delegates, Lacovig said: “We believe in creating ‘great places’ to live. What makes somewhere a great place is sociability, activities, access and linkages (in terms of transport and mobility), and comfort and aesthetics. He said in compiling the plans for development, they had studied cities that had been rejuvenated and transformed, among them Detroit, US and Maboneng, South Africa. “In these cities, one catalyst project gave investors the push they needed to get involved.” He explained through the ETHH they hoped a real impact would be created in the community and its surrounds, attracting people into the area, and encouraging investors to develop the Edenvale CBD. “I came to the country from Italy when I was just 12 years old and grew up in the Edenvale area,” said Lucovig. “So it is a real honour for me to be a part of the initiative of ECID and the Metro to renew Edenvale’s CBD. I am familiar with the area. I shopped at Eden Mall when I was a child so I understand the area, its strengths and weaknesses, and its community. Each city is different but there are things common to all ‘great places’ and we hope that this project will be a blueprint for the renewal of other city centres in South Africa and abroad.” Linda McKenzie, manager of ECID, explained she had gotten gooseflesh on her arms when she first saw the model of the development, with its greenery, triumphant housing tower and state-of-the-art transport hub. “As Edenvale residents we can be excited,” she said. “We were once known as the jewel of the east,” said Sundelowitz. “It’s time we take back our crown.”

THE NEW ETHH… WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW… WHERE WILL IT BE SITUATED?

and one of its highlights will include an amphitheatre.

The area adjacent to the Eden Mall and Van Riebeeck malls and just behind De Bakery.

A four-storey housing block Block A will include 32 units and block B, 36 units. One of the walls will be a ‘green wall,’ along which creeping plants can grow, which will change colour according to the seasons. There will also be a climbing wall at one end, allowing the more adventurous to mountain climb at the side of the building. There will be a rooftop gathering area for residents with greenery and use of solar technology, and rain water collection systems will be incorporated.

WHY WAS THIS AREA SELECTED? It is the centre of the Edenvale City Improvement District (ECID) area and “at the apex of Van Riebeeck Avenue.” It is currently underutilised with respect to commercial opportunities and has a wealth of potential for businesses. The site is also flat and currently has allocation for parking. The site incorporates the windmill of De Bakery, the city’s main landmark feature and existing public transport facilities exist.

WHAT WILL IT CONSIST OF? A public square It is hoped this will become the heart of community life. You will be able to sit at one of the coffee shops or eateries and watch people and life pass by. It will also provide a place for public performances and socialising. An education complex This will house different education institutions

A housing tower – the piece de resistance of the arrangement This will include 20 storeys and a 360-degree view of Edenvale. Its unique, ‘twisted’ design will allow for maximum balcony space and magnificent aesthetic beauty. Sporting facilities will be built at its base. Natural elements Roof surfaces will accommodate leisure and recreation activities, and will be landscaped with greenery,

trees, places to sit and grassy surfaces. Transport hub with taxi port A state-of-the-art transport hub will facilitate travel to and from the city.

DEVELOPMENT IN EDENVALE

WE DO NOT GO INTO THE FUTURE - WE MAKE THE FUTURE Garin Joemath 011 862 8500 The Edenvale City Improvement District has taken the first step for an initiative to improve the Edenvale district, and stands strongly on the African Proverb, “We do not go into the future - we make the future.” The ECID held a meeting at the Auditorium library in Edenvale on 14 October, with the aim of informing the citizens, Council members and media on the new development that will be taking place in the Edenvale CBD. The Architects of Justice (AOJ) are working with the ECID and local council to orchestrate the project. AOJ focusses on understanding their clients’ needs and are able to tackle building projects of varying scales, types and complexities in any given location. The ECID’s aim is to improve the CBD safety and to provide a green, clean and pleasant destination for the surrounding communities that it serves and intends to serve in the future. AOJ’s Alessio Lacovig stated, “If you want to go quickly, go alone and if you want to go far, go together.” The project has caused the AOJ many sleepless nights and many more working nights. “Edenvale will never be the same again - it is going to attract many new visitors and residents,” said Lacovig. In Lacovig’s presentation new urban regeneration structures were discussed, including new buildings for business opportunities and much more land space for sporting activities. Pick-up and drop-off points will also be developed for taxis and minibuses. The area in the CBD will offer much more than before. Lacovig said the team of AOJ was glad to be part of the ECID vision for the future.

steps to forgiveness By: Garin Joemath

Life is too short not to forgive those who hurt you. Here are some steps to help you, because forgiving someone does not just set them free, but yourself as well. Let go of yesterday’s troubles and walk in today’s beginning Yesterday cannot be changed, but today can be changed - the choice lies in our hands. Living with yesterday’s unforgiveness will certainly not help with today’s forgiveness. If we can forgive ourselves for mistakes or failures, we can forgive others, so that we move forward in the present moment to change our future. Step

1

better and start seeing the good things in others. Being around positive people will make you positive throughout every area in your life. You will start to see the positive and will not support the negative, like unforgiveness, bitterness and hurt to hinder your conscious and positive living. Positive people will help to grow you in positivity in every area in your life.

Stop thinking of the bitterness Step and hurt, and think of the good times you had with the person This step seems like an impossible task but the truth of the matter is, you should not allow bitterness and hurt to overtake the good times you might have had with the person. To remember some of the good moments you enjoyed with the person who hurt you, remind yourself that he/she also has something good in him/her. This will cause some postivity for you to take the first few steps of opening up to invite forgiveness.

Stop thinking of yourself as a Step victim Bishop Desmond Tutu wrote a book titled, “There is no future without forgiveness.” We cannot live our whole lives as victims; because, to be honest, life owes us nothing. The minute you see yourself as a victim, it will cause you to lay down a foundation of pity, in the hope that people will feel sorry for you and speak against the person who hurt you. Someone once said: “If you can’t let go, if you can’t forgive, if your thoughts are about revenge and feeling sorry for yourself, you won’t move on and you will stay stuck.” This means that you will imprison yourself. Break the chains of thinking of yourself as a victim because you will stay in one place and you will be a prisoner for the rest of your life.

Associate yourself with positive people Being around positive people will enable you to handle difficulties

Seek greater healing and peace Forgiveness leads to healing and Step peace not just for the person that you forgive, but also for yourself.

THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS A FREE T-SHIRT The 2016 Local General Elections are just around the corner – maybe not for voters, but certainly for political parties, which have to enthuse their branch members, raise funds, choose councillor candidates, put up posters, debate issues and recruit party agents. Commuters have probably already noticed the odd billboard on the highway highlighting government progress in the area of local government. The media is already experiencing an increase in press releases from political parties. The ANC recently held a presidential fundraising dinner, with companies buying tables according to a sliding-scale of fees that was, of course, calibrated according to the closeness of their chosen table to President Zuma’s. Cosatu marched for ‘decent jobs.’ The DA meted out some harsh discipline to MP stalwart Dianne Kohler-Barnard for a social media blunder that would have been a great deal less embarrassing had it not been made less than a year before elections. A few weeks ago the EFF leader called South Africa a failed state [iol.co.za] that outsourced everything, including toilet paper. This is just the beginning. The red T-shirts, the blue T-shirts and the yellow T-shirts are still coming; along with opinion polls, posters on poles and the inevitable mudslinging – who can forget the ‘open toilet saga’ of 2011? Sadly, the real needs

of those who desperately need service delivery are too often forgotten as campaigners by Palesa Yates bearing free T-shirts, berets, braaivleis even booze – try to out-charm each other into the hearts of voters via their stomachs. And the race for easy headlines often blurs the lines between one party’s policies and those of the next. Perhaps it is time to set an upper limit on the election budgets of our political parties. Ours is supposed to be a proportional representative system which was designed to allow maximum expression for the vibrant diversity of voices that constitute the Rainbow Nation, yet smaller parties cannot even think about competing with the DA’s blue tsunami of street posters or the ubiquitous smilingface-of-our-leader yellow T-shirts distributed by the ANC. Of course the red beret has a fashion appeal among the youth quite apart from its political significance, but somebody has to pay for all these promotional items – and the voters never seem to be informed about who the funders are. Those ‘free’ T-shirts could cost them dearly.

PIECE

How does one get to the place of healing and peace? A very interesting man by the name of Jesus said this: “For if you forgive other people that sinned against you, your Heavenly Father will forgive you. If man forgives you, you feel at peace and will heal the worry about not being forgiven for what you have done to someone, but when God forgives you, he gives you healing and peace that will make you want to conquer. How do you get to that place? Just seek Jesus and greater healing and peace will be given to you. Jesus can help you to release anger and pain. You just need to seek Him and in the process you seek your own healing and peace. Where do you find this man Jesus? In the Bible. Reach the place of “Yes, I Step forgive you!” Many people need time to forgive and to forget. Some can get to the place of forgiving but not to a place of forgetting. You do not need to forget in order to forgive, but how can you reach the place of

6

“Yes, I forgive you,” if you are constantly going to remind yourself of the wrong the person did to you? You will then go back to the place of stirring up anger towards the person that hurt you, which will cause you to wonder if you have really forgiven them or not. “Yes, I forgive you,” may take time but when you are ready to reach the place, forgive and forget. The healing process is a journey you must walk, but do not take a long time to start the walk of forgiveness. When you have reached that place of “Yes, I forgive you,” forgive and forget, because forgiving but not forgetting can rob you of complete healing and will cause you to stay a prisoner. To forgive and to forget is to say, “Yes I forgive you” and that will set you free!

Holy Rosary School’s 75th birthday celebrations recently culminated with the offering of Holy Mass in the Bishop Shanahan Hall, on the Feast of the Holy Rosary. Before the Mass, the bronze bust of the school’s founder, Bishop Joseph Shanahan, was unveiled and blessed. This bust was donated from the fundraising efforts of the 2015 Debutantes. In its 75 years, the school has grown from seven to 950 students. The main celebrant at the Eucharistic celebration was Bishop Buti Tlhagale, the Archbishop of Johannesburg. Bishop Risi, who is an oldboy of Holy Rosary, assisted him and delivered the homily, which focussed on Bishop Joseph Shanahan and the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary. The Mass was concelebrated by Father Leathem, the parish priest and school chaplain, Father Michel Meunier and Father Paul Kitha. A GRAND UNVEILING: Seen here with the bust designed and produced by Heidi Hadaway are Mrs Hilary Gray (Primary School Principal), Sister Lorna (Regional Leader of the Holy Rosary Sisters), Mrs Belinda Damhuis (High School Principal), Mrs Jacinta Lucas (Head of School), Bernadean Farinha (2015 Debutante Queen), Megan Patmore (2015 Debutante First Princess), and Monique Pinheiro (2015 Debutante Second Princess). DEDICATED: Mrs Sharon Meyer (High School Religion HOD), Mr Clive Leon (First chairman of the Board of Governors, and later the Trust, of the school), Bishop Risi, Mrs Lucy Ferguson (daughter of one of the Hurly brothers who donated the land the school was initially built upon), Mrs Mary Fitzpatrick (Primary School Religion HOD), and Mrs Linda Giuricich (daughter of Mrs Lucy Ferguson)

‘NO’ TO BULLYING

MOTIVATING: Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts addresses learners on the importance of standing together in the fight against societal issues and injustices. A sea of learners took to the streets of Edenvale on Friday morning last week as a sign of solidarity against bullying in their schools. The learners came from schools throughout the area to attend the march, organised as part of the Tiles4Change initiative, spearheaded by the Karaglen Super Spar in conjunction with Edenvale policing authorities and local security companies. Before the march began, the learners were given a demonstration of an arrest by the police force, including members of the K9 Unit, and security officials, with Edenvale police’s crime prevention officer

Lieutenant Colonel Robbie Roberts explaining this was a demonstration of what could be achieved when the community stood together against crime. The march against the scourge of bullying in schools was a further demonstration of how standing in unity was important in the fight against social problems like bullying. Sergeant Ulandi Mouton, Edenvale police’s social crime prevention officer, said the Edenvale police had embarked on a campaign to visit local schools to educate them on bullying, as it was a problem increasingly prevalent among the youth. She said the extensive

bullying programme they were bringing into the schools aimed to educate the youth and their parents on issues such as: a deeper understanding of the bullying phenomenon, a new strategy for intervention, tools for children and adults to empower themselves, a better understanding of human behaviour and human potential and tools to help develop respect for others and to manage emotions wisely - among other topics. Tiles4Change aims to give the youth of Edenvale the support they need to be the change they want to see in the community.

Saheti School learners, Athena (Grade 5) and Alexia (Grade 2) Munn have been named as finalists in the Miss SA Schools competition. The aspiring young ambassadors told the tame TIMES this was a wonderful opportunity to represent their school and to embody their school’s ethos – ‘To know thyself’. Participants were required to get involved in charity work, and the sisters chose to fundraise for Cupcakes 4 Kids with Cancer. They became Cupcake Angels and hosted a cupcake sale at the George Bizos Marathon recently held at the school. In just over two hours, R3500 was raised.
