FEBRUARY 2023

Long live the player.

“It’s different here.” It’s the difference between elite and exclusive. Between come on in and wait out there. Between knowing what you have and talking about what you have.

Tamarisk was built on the principle that character, integrity, a love of golf, and companionship is all that matters. And what was true back then is even more true now.

The widening green, tall palms, and blistering blue of sky. The belonging. The vitality. And the quiet irreverence that never takes anything for granted. The living full-hearted in everything we do.

It is an amazing time for Tamarisk Members. Our Golf Course has never been better, and if you are not here enjoying it, you are missing out! Each department carries it’s own buzz providing outstanding experiences for all of our members of the Club.

A friendly reminder and a simple ask while out on the course; please fix your divots, don’t drive too close to the greens and rake your bunkers. This will help keep our course in the best shape and make our rounds of golf more enjoyable.

We are back to operating full dining service with our new kitchen. Breakfast and lunch is served daily and dinner is served Wednesday - Sunday. We have been open just over a month, and our team is still getting acquainted and comfortable with the new equipment. Our goal as always is to deliver world class service. When you make a reservation, please be timely as we have staff for the number of reservations. Plan on 30 minute segments. Our team does their best to accommodate and works very hard to make everyone happy.

Also, please respect our members and adhere to our cell phone policies. If you are going to take a call, step away and take your call away from our members and guests; NOT in the dining areas.

We have welcomed two new members to our Board of Directors, Suku Radia and Mark Mehlman. Both have chaired committees at our club and are positive additions for the future. We had two of our board members whose terms have expired. Ken Lieberman and Lee Erwin deserve a special thank you for their dedication and time spent to make our Club a better place.

At this time, we only have forty spots left within our membership. As we continue to add additional members and welcome our 2-month Preview Participants, please reach out and introduce yourself. There are many new faces and everyone is excited to get acquainted. These amazing individuals will make great new friends and TCC family.

Thank you for your continued support,

Traditionally, our newsletters have been a great resource to welcome members back to our valley, recognize new members, share what’s happening around the Club, celebrate successes, and much more. This month, I want to recognize a special group of employees at Tamarisk. Before I do, it’s important to keep in mind that all our staff is equally important and without a doubt, the reason for our lasting success. For February 2023, please join me in celebrating the staff (pictured) for their service of 30 years or more at Tamarisk! This is a distinguished group of professionals with a dedication to

excellence that is not only inspiring, but worth our respect and admiration. They have set the bar high for the rest of us and I for one am grateful for their service and consider it a privilege to work along side of them for the benefit of our membership. Congratulations to each person pictured, you are exceptional and your efforts are very much appreciated by Tamarisk Country Club!

BRAND UPDATES

Our brand is what sets us apart and is the public’s impression of our club. We worked closely with Watson Creative (WC); an agency out of Portland, Oregon who is well versed in luxury brands, to ensure the essence of Tamarisk Country Club was personified in our branding. The goal was to design a brand, true to where we have been as a club, and timeless as to the vision of where we want to go. WC took a deep dive conducting a brand audit, held workshops, interviews, and sent out surveys to form a synthesis and strategy for Tamarisk. While the logo remains the same, you will see an update with brand mark placement and branded colors. We moved through a plethora of scenarios to determine where Tamarisk stacked up to competitive clubs in narrative and design. With so many clubs in a short radius, WC took note and noticed every club using the same type of photography. You could interchange photos from club to club and not determine who it belonged to. WC skillfully defined a style including photography that sets Tamarisk apart from our competitors. Inspired by the famous Slim Aaron images, Tamarisk claims their mid centruy modern roots, ambitious spirit and fashion-forward vibe that is appealing to the past members and the younger generations.

The photography paired with the creative writing is absolutely brilliant and does in fact make Tamarisk stand out in a sea of private clubs. We have since been complimented by Club Benchmarking, Palm Springs Life, as well as professionals in the design and marketing field. This brand is something to be proud of.

Days are numbered. Journeys are fixed to a course of fairways. Every game is played until it isn’t. Because the curious thing about life is not that it ends. It’s that if it didn’t, how would you know you were alive in the first place?

With vitality as with belonging, there is a choice. To take the journey. To play the course. To join the people. It is in the choosing that we affirm our existence.

The sun setting on the high snows of the San Jacinto Mountains. The crepuscular carpeting of light that waited all day to appear. Magic is fleeting. But that’s the point of magic. To remind us that our time is finite but wondrous, and that any moment can become every moment: the moments that pull us closer to ourselves, our friends and our communities. The moments we feel most alive.

How does that Frank Sinatra song go??

I’m gonna live ‘til I die

I’m gonna laugh ‘stead of cry

I’m gonna take the town and turn it upside down

I’m gonna live, live until I die Gonna dance, gonna fly

I’ll take a chance, ridin’ high Before my number’s up, I’m gonna fill my cup

I’m gonna live, live, live, live, live until I die. That’s the magic of Tamarisk. That’s the life of the player. That’s the story the world is waiting to hear.

Long live the player.

“FROM THE AGRONOMY SIDE OF THINGS”

Did you know that all of our lakes have fish in them?

Normally, golf course lakes have two to three kinds of fish that help with water quality and clarity. These fish keep the acquatic growth down and maintain a natural balance in the water. One type of fish that we have at Tamarisk is Grass Carp; they feed on aquatic plants and grass clippings that fall into lake by wind or during maintenance practices. The second type is the Mosquito Fish, which is a natural way to help control mosquito larvae without the use of insecticides or chemicals. The mosquito fish diet is primarily insects and larvae preventing mosquito outbreaks from lake water systems. The third fish you might see in our ponds are Largemouth Bass. This species is a carnivorous freshwater fish that helps with maintaining the levels of small fish while also assisting with insect control.

Of these three types of fish, only the Grass Carp and the Largemouth Bass are fishable. However at Tamarisk, we do not allow fishing for safety reasons.

INGREDIENTS:

Crab Cake:

1 lb. of crab meat

¼ cup red pepper, diced

2 tbsp red onion, diced

3 tbsp cilantro, chopped

¼ cup celery, diced

¼ cup mayo

2 tsp lemon juice

1 tbsp Cajun seasoning

1 tbsp Old Bay seasoning

PAN FRIED CRAB CAKES FOR THE WIN!

This month Chef Frank shares a versatile crowd pleaser, Pan Fried Crab Cakes paired with Artichoke Red Onion Salad and Chipotle Mayo. This dish is simple to make; they taste decadent and are not overly rich, and are sure to impress your dinner guests.

TIPS

Chilling the patties for at least 1 hour (or up to 24 hours) before frying helps them stay together when they cook. The eggs and mayonnaise with the crab meat acts as a binder to hold the patties together when they cook. Saltine crackers can also be used in the place of bread crumbs and makes a great filler for crab cakes, which can be sautéed, baked, grilled, deep fried, or broiled.

PLATE IT

Have fun with plating up. Smear a thick stroke of aioli across the surface of the plate. Add garnish.

¼ cup bread crumbs

black pepper to taste

dry bread crumbs to coat

Place all ingredients in a bowl except for the dry bread crumbs. Mix to incorporate well. Place bread crumbs on a side plate. Make a 3 ounce ball and roll it into the dry bread crumbs. Form in the hand and fry in a fry pan with a little oil. Cook on each side until golden brown.

Artichoke Red Onion Salad:

1 piece artichoke bottom

¼ red onion, julienne

2 tbsp diced pimentos

2 tbsp cilantro, chopped

2 tbsp olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Check for seasoning, chill and serve.

Chipotle Mayo:

½ cup Mayonnaise

1 tsp chipotle pepper

1 pinch of lemon juice

Salt and pepper to taste

Place all ingredients into a bowl and mix well. Chill and serve

CHEF’S TABLE

Bob & Jane Clark

Lee told Bob and Jane to come and try out Tamarisk Country Club and the California desert. This turned out to be more than a temporary stopover, as Bob and Jane and the entire family quickly fell in love with the total desert experience. Most of the kids (and grandkids) share Bob and Jane’s love of trekking and climbing, and were instantly enthusiastic to explore the Santa Rosa mountains. The whole family loves sunshine, golf, tennis, great food and nice people - all of which were found at the club. Especially nice people.

In early March 2020, the Clarks found themselves in cold, wintry Chicago as news of the Covid pandemic took hold and swept across the nation. They had spent the summer at Rosebud Ranch, the family ranch in Colorado, and the search was on for a safe, warm place for a winter refuge. Also, very fortunate to be good friends with Lee and Laurie Wielansky, because of them, a great idea was hatched.

Bob is not just a casual climber. In 2012, he reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro after a grueling trek and 4,000-foot singleday climb to achieve a 19,308-foot elevation. He also mastered several “14ers” (a group of Colorado mountain peaks exceeding 14,000 feet), including Castle Peak and La Plata. He has hiked the Swiss Alps and mountains in Nepal, and climbed Mount Whitney in southern California, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States. In 2020, he achieved his goal of summiting Capitol Peak, the most difficult of the Colorado 14ers. Check out the photos from this trip and reminiscences from this adventure and others at https://bobclarkbeyond.com/thoughts/ capitol-peak/.

By the end of spring of 2021, the Clarks learned that the hoped-for annual journey to Rancho Mirage would be interrupted for

one year due to Bob’s great opportunity: he received an appointment from President Biden to serve as the United States Commissioner General of the USA Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. It was an incredible opportunity to lead international teams of people and use the USA platform to engage foreign audiences on

American values and innovation. Jane became a full-time partner in the endeavor, working with a new family of team members and making a huge number of new friends from all around the world.

The Clark children each made the journey

to Dubai and had a wonderful chance to help support the USA Pavilion’s platform to showcase U.S. cultural diversity, and invite visitors to study, travel and invest in the United States. Bob focused on the theme “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of the Future” and highlighted American leadership on global issues that included climate, space, food security, health, and innovation. Now the Clarks are back in the valley and looking forward to making new friends and finding as many adventures in the area as possible. While they’ve only been Tamarisk members since 2020, Bob and Jane have found it to be exactly what they want in a club and are using the membership frequently. Bob is originally from St Louis, Missouri and Jane, a Penn alum grew up in Sommerset, PA. Bob is Executive Chairman and Founder of Clayco, headquartered in Chicago. He started the company in 1984 at age 25 and today it is a top 5 design builder in north America with over 3,600 employees. Jane is retired from her dental practice but still doing volunteer work and offering guidance to dental residency students at Mercy in St Louis, MO and has led two dental camps in upper Nepal. The entire family is engaged on boards and working hands on in philanthropic endeavors. If you would like to learn more about Bob and his adventures, you can follow his blog www.bobclarkbeyond.com.

FOCUS ON ONE POINT AT A TIME

To keep your mental game strong, approach each match one point at a time and in the present moment. Push the 100 thoughts about your opponent’s skill level, previous errors, or next points aside focusing only on the current play. This mindset suggests each match be played as a series of mini encounters with your opponent. Every point should be the most important.

TIP OF THE MONTH

While you are playing and you see your opponent strike the ball, say to yourself, “Hit it to ME!!” That way you will ALWAYS be READY!!

Christy AndersonRecognition for Excellent Service

RACQUET SPORTS

Christy Anderson’s work ethic knows no bounds. In the early morning hours, Christy is working behind the scenes to clean up the entire Racquet Sports area. She handles all tasks, even the not-soglamourous ones, like blowing debris off the courts or pulling weeds. She goes the extra mile to have the Racquet Sports pavilion in pristine condition by the time the players arrive. She sweeps the area in front of the shop, and even in the parking lot, ensuring there are no tripping hazards. Christy is in her 17th year at Tamarisk, and she takes pride and ownership in all she does. She has even brought special equipment from home to repair ripped tennis nets. Christy is attentive; you will never have an empty water cooler because she monitors and refills them on a daily basis. She is a forward thinker, as she anticipates any issues before they occur. She does all of this and more while being an excellent tennis and pickleball player who makes every match competitive and fun! We are so very lucky to have Christy on our team. Christy is not only a credit to herself and our team, but to the entire Membership of Tamarisk Country Club.
