TEAM PROFILE

Q&A: WITH SEAN PARSONS, DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY

If you’ve spent any time at Tamarack over the past year you have undoubtedly seen Sean Parsons walking the golf course, digging through the ice to examine the greens, trimming the rough, grooming the bunkers, and basically ensuring the health and playability of this award-winning new championship golf course, courtesy of Robert Trent Jones II and company. As the Director of Agronomy, Sean is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to grass, weeds, bugs, wildlife, and anything native or invasive. We actually spoke to Sean last summer as the brand new Osprey Meadows golf course was being unveiled. And with Tamarack transitioning from a winter wonderland to a summer playground, we thought it would be a good time to check in with Sean and see what all he’s been doing to get ready for the season.

Q: DIRECTOR OF AGRONOMY…SOUNDS INVOLVED.

SEAN: “Yes it is, always something to learn or figure out with each changing season. Good thing I love golf and the mountains and taking care of this course. It’s a lot of work but a lot of fun. And I have a great team and support from everyone.”

Q: THE NEW OSPREY MEADOWS GOLF COURSE IS AWESOME BY ALL ACCOUNTS—MEMBERS AND MEDIA, ALIKE. WITH THE SEASON FAST-APPROACHING I IMAGINE GETTING THE COURSE READY AND IN TIP-TOP SHAPE TAKES A BIG EFFORT.

SEAN: “Well it is, but we’re ready. I am much more worried about the grass during the winter under a blanket of snow, than during the summer when I can see it. Ice or disease or other factors can damage the grass and even kill it. So, we walk the course and dig up under the ice to inspect the grass and ensure its health during the hibernation period, which is what I call it. Grass goes to sleep in the winter and lives off its stored nutrients and food just like a bear does. Grass is a living, organic thing and requires constant vigilance—especially in a place with dramatic weather shifts like up here.”

Q: SO YOU CHECK THE WHOLE COURSE?

SEAN: “Pretty much. We check spots on all the greens and fairways to make sure we don’t have any surprises when the snow melts.”

Q: I BET THAT IS MESSY AND TRICKY?

SEAN: “It’s a mess, everything is soggy and mushy for a couple weeks but the snow melts fast, faster than you think. Our job is to keep the grass healthy, and the roots are string and deep, and have healthy fibers to store critical food and energy for the grass over the winter months. Without that, the grass wouldn’t make it so we are always on the lookout. It’s kind of like having kids, you have to nurture and care for it carefully.”

Q: BEING A NATURE-CENTRIC COMMUNITY, TAMARACK IS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, NATURAL SETTING, WITH INDIGENOUS FLORA AND FAUNA. WHAT DO YOU AND YOUR TEAM DO TO PROTECT THE WILDLIFE AND HABITAT HERE FOR NATIVE PLANTS, GRASSES, AND ANIMALS?

SEAN: “Great question and protecting and preserving the natural setting is a critical objective, we want to live in harmony with nature, not in conflict with it. I mean we have eagles nesting, and bears and deer and mountain lions. We go to great lengths to follow environmentally safe practices and treatments to safeguard this natural ecosystem for all the living things that call it home, including us. We are actually in the final stages of our Audubon Certification, that should be complete by the summer.”

Q: THAT’S IMPRESSIVE.

SEAN: “Yeah, it’s been a concerted effort by everyone at Tamarack to abide by the Audubon guidelines and stipulations. Audubon will actually come out periodically and check things, test the soil, and water, and grasses, and inspect the health of the environment as a whole. We want to encourage native plants and vegetation while getting rid of harmful, invasive weeds and plants. Same goes with the water in lake Cascade. We have to protect the quality of the shore and water by building buffers that protect from runoff and trans-location of seeds. I don’t want to get too detailed but we have a checklist that we need to adhere to—like any resort or community has to abide by if they want an Audubon Certification.”

Q: AND HOW LONG BEFORE THE AUDUBON CERTIFICATION IS AWARDED?

SEAN: “Soon. We’re in the final stages, so sometime this summer we think.”

Q: YOU ARE A BUSY MAN, SEAN. YOU HAVE A WIDE FOOTPRINT TO TAKE CARE OF WITH THIS GREAT NEW GOLF COURSE.

SEAN: “It’s pretty vast. We have 42 acres of fairway alone. Think about that. But going into year two, everything should be more uniform and even around the fairways and greens, all 19 holes. We will start cutting the grass shorter, gradually at first, and then a deeper cut when the weather heats up and the grass has developed strong roots and fibers. That makes for quicker greens, truer lies, and more consistency around the layout as a whole, even the more remote areas.”

HOMEOWNER PROFILE: DAMON & TERI GRAHAM

You’ve heard the expression: “All it took was one look and I was hooked.” That is literally what happened to Damon and Teri Graham, albeit not at the same time. Teri visited Tamarack with their youngest daughter, Faith, in early January and the two were blown away. They convinced Damon to come up and give Tamarack a look: “my youngest was hard-selling me on Tamarack.” And sure enough, when Damon came up to ski and luxuriate with Teri in late January, he was hooked too. In fact, they put an offer down on a condominium in The Village, “we wanted to be in the center of it all, close to skiing, dining, shopping, the whole bit.”

Q: I LOVE THE STORY ABOUT HOW YOU GUYS DISCOVERED TAMARACK.

DAMON: Yeah, it happened fast. We live in Southlake, Texas, and we heard about Tamarack from an Uncle who lives in the area, Uncle Dan. He’s been singing its praises for some time now and encouraging us to venture this way. In the past, we normally went skiing in Steamboat every year, but this winter we mixed it up. Teri and Faith, my youngest, came up to check it out and came back raving about it and telling me I have to go see it.

Q: BOTH OF THEM?

TERI: Yes, both, of us (laughs), but especially my daughter. She was 100% convinced this was the place for us—and turns out she was right.

Q: ALRIGHT, SO DAMON, THEY PERSUADE YOU TO COME UP IN LATER JANUARY, RIGHT?

DAMON: Yep, I went up with Teri for a weekend in late January and before we left to come back we put an offer down on a Village condominium. So, it just took one look for me too, I guess. There were two things that really sold me from the get-go. First, I think it’s a good investment because Tamarack has tremendous momentum, with move-in ready homes like ours, all the great skiing, the brand new golf course, and all the expansion plans for the future. Secondly, Tamarack is just a whole lot of fun, and that’s what it’s all about. Having a place the whole family can enjoy throughout the year and create great memories each season.

Q: SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE AN ACTIVE FAMILY, ARE YOU ALL SKIERS?

TERI: Some of us are, a couple of the kids are snowboarders, but we all love Tamarack for our own reasons. The skiing is just the beginning. We will be coming up here a lot this spring and summer to ride bikes, hike, fish, kayak, golf, you name it. Everyone can find something they love to do up here, it’s so diverse and varied in terms of recreation and amenities. It’s impossible to get bored at Tamarack.

Q: WHAT IMPRESSES YOU MOST ABOUT THIS RESORT COMMUNITY?

DAMON: The value and the quality. It’s amazing what you get for your money here compared to other mountain communities. Tamarack is known as the only ski, golf, and lake resort in the country and it’s a true all-season community. And the level of quality and craftsmanship—with the homes and residences, as well as the premier amenities—is world-class. And it’s only going to get better, with the expansion and new offerings. Bottom line: I think Tamarack will be a great investment over time, as the community continues to grow, and it’s a place we can enjoy right now, as a family, season after season, year after year.

FEATURED AMENITY

OSPREY MEADOWS GOLF COURSE

It’s hard to believe it’s been just 9 months since the Grand Opening of the Osprey Meadows Golf Course at Tamarack Resort last July. We are eagerly awaiting the onset of warmer weather and opening day at Osprey Meadows this Memorial Day weekend. The 2025 golf season will run from May 24 through October 12, weather dependent, giving golfers ample opportunity to enjoy the course all summer and into early fall.

Sean Parsons, Director of Agronomy, and his team have worked throughout the winter to ensure the health and playability of the grass come summertime. “It’s such a beautiful layout on a gorgeous piece of land,” says Scott Turlington, President at Tamarack Resort. “Robert Trent Jones II has come up with a remarkable, playerfriendly layout designed to appeal to all levels of golfers. The weekender will have fun and find it a challenge, and the scratch golfer will find different nuances and subtleties to the greens and fairways every round.”

“There are some really pretty holes on this course, in the meadow and tucked into the pines. It has really good routing and flow. Like a good resort course, it will offer lots of tee options so you can make it as long or as short as you want. That’s great for competitive golfers who want a challenge, as well as for kids and weekenders who just want to have fun.”

OSPREY MEADOWS FUN FACTS

• 42 acres of fairway

• 43 acres of rough

• 4 acres of greens

• 2.5 acres of tees

• 23,000 square foot Social & Practice Green

• 114,00 square feet of bunkers

• 10 miles of cart paths

• 13 cart bridges, 2 walk bridges

• 16th hole plays as a par 5 or par 4

• Greens and Tees are Pure Distinction Bentgrass

• Fairways and Rough are Kentucky Bluegrass/Ryegrass Blend

• 4th hole Par 3 can be played at 280 yards

IT’S HARD TO SAY WHAT’S BETTER, THE COURSE OR THE VIEWS.

The pristine mountain setting alone signals that Osprey Meadows Golf Course is something special. It is a stunning design by the celebrated Robert Trent Jones II and his team, and best of all… it is an absolute delight to play. “We wanted to rethink the routing and widen the fairways,” says RTJ II. “We wanted to make the course more playable, as they say—meaning more fun for the average player so they don’t lose as many golf balls and they can keep on playing. About 60–70% of the fairways and greens have a water feature in the form of ponds, creeks, or wetlands. Some are primarily scenic, while others will factor into shot-making, becoming true water hazards. The beauty of the layout is its perfect balance of risk and reward. So, golfers of all levels should find the ideal level they are seeking. We designed this to appeal to a broad cross-section of players. Depending on the tee placements, you can make it as hard or as forgiving as you want. And there are plenty of occasions to try different shots and strategies with each hole. We like to give folks options on the course so it always plays new and fresh.”

In 2020, her family fulfilled a long-time dream of living full-time in Valley County. The Idaho mountains have always felt like home to her, and now they truly are. Shelly is thrilled to call Tamarack Realty her new home as she continues to serve clients in the Treasure Valley and Valley County.
