Q&A WITH ERIK “FISH” FISHER, SPORTS SCHOOL DIRECTOR

Erik Fisher, a two-time Olympian and the Sports School Director, leads Tamarack’s program. His passion and commitment to helping guests love winter sports and improve their skills are evident. “Skiing has been an integral part of my life from a young age,” says Erik. “My goal with the Sports School is to give back to the sport I love by helping today’s guests discover the beauty, joy, and thrill of skiing—a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime.”

Q: FISH YOU ARE OBVIOUSLY AN EXPERT SKIER, HAVE PARTICIPATED IN TWO OLYMPICS. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL FOR GUESTS WANTING TO LEARN AT TAMARACK?

FISH: “First and foremost, the goal is to have fun. That includes beginners and experts. You should have the same rush and a thrill whether you’re going on your first run as a beginner or recording your best time as a racer.”

Q: I UNDERSTAND YOU HAVE RE-VAMPED THE SPORTS SCHOOL.

FISH: “That’s true. We are still doing everything we have always done—teaching kids to get comfortable with the terrain and the gear and all the basics, but we are now equipped to help the advanced more technical guests as they look to start racing. We can accommodate both ends of the spectrum, beginner to expert.”

Q: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE AS A TEAM TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE?

FISH: “By bringing in the best people and being proactive with our programming and instruction. We are committed to making this a top-tier Sports School. We have made the commitment by bringing in some 60+ certified instructors to Tamarack, to ensure we have the right instructor for each guest given their experience and goals.”

Q: THAT’S INCREDIBLE. HOW LONG DOES THE WINTER SPORTS SCHOOL PROGRAM RUN EACH YEAR?

FISH: “It depends on the snow. As the snow goes, the skiing goes, and we follow suit. We’re open 9:00 – 4:00 seven days a week as long as ski season is open. And, of course, we offer a wide variety of teaching and instruction, from private lessons to clinics to group outings, you name it. One of the more popular classes is the Trail Blazers Program for kids 4 to 12. It includes instruction from our trained staff for most of the day, from 10:00 – 3:00 and includes lunch. Kids have a blast and parents can go and have some quality time for themselves. You can go online and lookup the Tamarack Sports School on our website to see everything we offer.”

Q: SOUNDS LIKE A WIN-WIN. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOUR JOB AS THE SPORTS SCHOOL DIRECTOR?

FISH: “My favorite thing about it is I get to do it at such an amazing mountain destination like Tamarack. It’s a dream. I just love being on the mountain and if I can impart that to some of the guests who are skiing for the first or second time, then that makes it worthwhile. It’s a great sport that has given so much to me—I want to see that happen for other too.”

The Snyder’s are an active family. They love camping, hiking, biking, skiing, you name it. Given their penchant for the great outdoors and all its seasonal wonders, the Snyders fell in love with Tamarack Resort right away. “Tamarack has been great for our family,” says homeowner Dean Snyder. “We started coming to the area around 2007 when our children were young. Today, they’re all grown up and we still love gathering together at Tamarack. The kids have busy lives, of course, but Andrea and I get up here as much as we can, almost every weekend. There’s no place we’d rather be.”

Q: HOW DID YOU DISCOVER TAMARACK RESORT?

DEAN: “We moved to Boise from California around 2007. We had been ready for a change. After living there for a bit, we bought some property in the area so we could go camp and hike and be outdoors. Eventually, we discovered Tamarack and loved all the four-season activities. We recently bought a residence in the Village at Calvi II, which puts us in the heart of Tamarack with access to skiing, golf, the lake, biking, hiking, you name it.”

Q: CALVI II IS A GREAT CHOICE. ARE YOU ALL BIG SKIERS?

DEAN: “We do ski and we love the skiing up here. We’re not pros by any means, but I skied when I was younger and the kids have grown up skiing at Tamarack and they really enjoy it. Tamarack has dozens of runs for every level of skier and the terrain is beautiful.”

Q: HAVE YOU VISITED THIS YEAR?

DEAN: “Yep, we have. We came up and had a great time—checked out the Mid Mountain Lounge and was really impressed. It’s a great new amenity and, as a Club Member, I look forward to all the events and get-togethers in the coming months. It’s also just a great place to take a break on the mountain, grab some food, grab a beer or drink, and just warm up and rest for a bit. It’s a great new addition.”

Q: HOW HAS THE SEASON BEEN?

DEAN: “It has been really good. We got lots of good runs in. What I love about Tamarack is you can actually ski here. It’s not like some of the other ski resorts where you have to stand in line all day. At Tamarack, you have premier runs and terrain without all the long lines and crowds.”

Q: WHAT IS IT THAT SEPARATES TAMARACK FROM OTHER MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES AND RESORTS?

Jeff is an Idaho native though also grew up in Washington DC. He eagerly moved back to Idaho to pursue his career in sales and marketing & hospitality management. For the last 9 years he has successfully owned and operated a small business out of Eagle, ID. Jeff joined the Tam Fam last year as the Director of The Club at Tamarack. After a very successful launch of The Club he has now transferred to Tamarack Realty. He is eager to continue to the evolution and growth of the Tam Fam community. Jeff and his wife moved to the mountains of Idaho to raise their young children in the beauty of the outdoors, where you can find them skiing, hiking, or boating.

I love anything outdoors! You can hear us coming a mile away as my wife, Natasha and I have three little ones (and one on the way) who are living their best up here in Valley County

2. IN YOUR OPINION WHAT’S THE COOLEST DESIGN TREND YOU ARE SEEING IN HOMES TODAY?

High end appliances in the kitchen and function in the kitchen. It is such a great meeting place to unwind and enjoy family and friends.

3. WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WERE NOT HELPING PEOPLE BUY OR SELL HOMES?

Talking to people about buying or selling properties or land as I plan my next adventure. As said in a song, “you can’t buy happiness but you can buy dirt”.

4. WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 MOVIES IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER?

Stand by Me, Darjeeling Limited, Patton, Return of the Man from Snowy River, and Australia.

5. IF YOU HAD TO EAT ONE MEAL, EVERY DAY FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Pizza or Clean Simple Eats Nut Butters and Carrots.

6. WHAT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO TELL YOURSELF AT AGE 13?

Listen to your parents, they told me “change is inevitable growth is optional”. I would add “nobody wins afraid of losing”.

7. CAN YOU TELL US A HIDDEN GEM IN VALLEY COUNTY THAT ONLY LOCALS KNOW ABOUT?

I sure can! However, I know that answer because of discovery and exploration w/ the family as locals. I recommend exploring yourself. You never know what you may find.

8. DONNELLY IS KNOWN AS THE CROSSROADS TO RECREATION, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO RECREATE?

Skiing and outdoor time with the family are at the top of the list. Whether that is camping, hiking or just sitting around a fire.

9. WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOUR FAVORITE VIEWPOINT IN TAMARACK?

At the top of course! Runner up is the deck at The Club’s Snack Shack.

10. LASTLY, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING IN REAL ESTATE?

Seeing people find a place they love and bring their family to enjoy it together!
