Q&A: MEET PATRICK BERG,DIRECTOR OF FAMILY ACTIVITIES



Patrick Berg has spent the last 20+ years in education. Most recently he was Head of School and Co-Founder of the Mountain Community School, a K8 public charter school located at Tamarack Resort.
Some of you are familiar with the old “Wildhorse Daycare.” Well, that’s a thing of the past. We are excited to announce our brand new (for 2024/2025) Basecamp Child Care Service located in the exact same place as Wildhorse, only now we’ve taken it to the next level. The goal at Tamarack has always been to create family activities, programs, and amenities that can be used by all, young and older alike. Basecamp is a testament to that. “We’re always trying to make things better,” says Director Patrick Berg, “even if it’s not necessarily broken. In the case of the new Basecamp, we saw an opportunity to really elevate the childcare facilities and programming for kids. We want Basecamp to be something the kids can really look forward to. We want them to beg their parents to let them spend the day—and the parents, of course, get some quality time too.” We recently sat down with Patrick so he could tell us all about it.
Q: PATRICK THE NEW BASECAMP SOUNDS LIKE A REALLY GREAT THING. HOW DID IT COME ABOUT?
PATRICK: Strategically, the goal at Tamarack is continuous improvement. We have great skiing, but we added more runs this year to make it better. We just opened the new golf course last summer which was huge. And the new Basecamp Child Care Service is an example of taking what we had, completely overhauling it, and turning it into a dynamic, multifaceted ‘camp’ that kids will love.
Q:
WHAT
ARE THE AGE PARAMETERS?
PATRICK: The Basecamp child service is for both members and guests, kids range from six months old up to 12 years old. And remember it’s brand new, so we’re evolving. We will be adding more programming, special events, games, activities, field trips, you name it. We want kids to feel welcomed and comfortable—we want them to know this is here for them year round, spring, summer, winter, and fall.
Q: THAT SOUNDS GREAT. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO COMMUNICATE TO PARENTS?
PATRICK: I want them to know this is a safe, fun, dynamic resource for their children. We are focused on creating a learning environment that supports teamwork and outdoor recreation. When you enroll your child in Basecamp, they will be engaging with other kids, learning about the outdoors, playing games, and having adventures. The program is built around arts, crafts, and lots of outdoor activities and outings. So, during the winter, that means sledding, snowshoeing, sledding, Nordic skiing, and more. We also feature movie nights, Bingo nights, and gaming nights, for the older kids. Again, it’s ever-evolving. We will be adding fun, new stuff constantly.
Q: GIVE US THE DETAILS PATRICK….
PATRICK: Details, let’s see…we’re open every day and located in the Dome by the main parking area. Our hours are currently seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We also have Après ‘after hours’ for kids Friday through Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Q: THIS SOUNDS GREAT. ANYTHING ELSE DO WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BASECAMP?
PATRICK: We partner with the Sports School so that means if your child is attending Basecamp, they can also attend a ski or snowboard lesson that same day. So that’s a great option for kids who to learn the basics and proper techniques as they discover the thrill of skiing.

HOMEOWNER PROFILE: BOB & CHRIS HARRY

Hailing from Omaha, Nebraska, Bob and Chris Harry were so taken with Tamarack that they bought two residences in The Village—one for them to use and one to put in the Tamarack Rental Program. They saw real value in the all-season living experience, as well as in the long-term investment prospects. “Tamarack is really hitting its stride,” says Bob Harry, “with all the great skiing, the Tamarack lakefront with the marina coming soon, and the new Osprey Meadows course which opened this summer.”

BOB TELL US HOW YOU HEARD ABOUT TAMARACK?
BOB: We visited McCall about 10 years ago. Our oldest son went to University of Idaho, and one of his friends’ mom was a realtor and told them about this resurgent community called Tamarack. So, we checked it out, liked what we saw, and bought our condominium in the Village right over the phone, sight unseen.
Q: OH REALLY, THAT’S INTERESTING
BOB: We just knew this was the place for us. It clicked with both of us. So, we closed on our two-bedroom Roseberry residence in 2022 and then decided to buy a studio condo in Roseberry as a rental investment.

Q: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE OSPREY MEADOWS GOLF COURSE?
BOB: I really like it can play as long and challenging as you want, or you can take advantage of the shorter tee options and wide fairways to keep it fun for the weekend golfer. As for the course, it’s such a beautiful out-and-back design and the views are incredible—you have the ridgelines, the lake in the distance, the pine forest all around, the mountain meadows, it’s stunning—and a great everyday resort course.
Q: SO, TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FAMILY AND THE ACTIVITIES EVERYONE ENJOYS.
BOB: We do a little bit of everything. The skiing is a huge part of our life, so we are up here 4 or 5 times during the winter. We also like the warmer months for the golf, the boating and fishing, the hiking, the pool. We love the variety of each season’s activities, there’s always something fun to do up here.
Q: I UNDERSTAND YOUR DAUGHTER WAS MARRIED AT TAMARACK
BOB: That’s true. It was a great day. Wallis and Sam got married on New Year’s Eve at the Arling Center Chapel. It was very special and the fact that she wanted to get married here shows you what a big part of our life Tamarack has become.

BOB: There are so many, that’s tough. I think first and foremost, the location is ideal, all the natural beauty and the stunning backdrop of the mountains and forest. 1. CAN YOU TELL US A HIDDEN GEM IN VALLEY COUNTY THAT ONLY LOCALS KNOW ABOUT?
As many locals will tell you, that is a rite of passage. But I will share a favorite spot to hike is to Goose Creek Falls.
2. DONNELLY IS KNOWN AS THE CROSSROADS TO RECREATION, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO RECREATE?
I love every season here! In the winter we enjoy the long ski runs at Tamarack, spring/ summer/fall is full of hiking and exploring and summer we enjoy boating and finding a quiet spot by the lake or river to fish.
3. WHERE WOULD WE FIND YOUR FAVORITE VIEW POINT IN TAMARACK?
The summit is stunning on a clear day, you can see for miles in every direction. The lake, mountains and village are all images to soak up and enjoy.
4. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO SELL OR BUY RIGHT NOW?
Don’t try to ‘beat” interest rates or the market, make the purchase because it is right for you and your family.
5. IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY, WHAT IS THE FIRST THING YOU WOULD DO?
Invest it in land.

Vaulted ceilings that allow for big windows and natural light and exposed beams.

Tacos, that’s a well rounded meal, right?
