Is a sex offender living near you? By Mitch Sneed Outlook Editor
Does a sex offender live near you? It seems like a question that we should all know the answer to. But despite some of the toughest reporting laws in the country and easy access to sex-offender data via the Internet, most people simply don’t take the time to check.
The state feels so strongly, that it requires offenders to register every 90 days. An informal survey conducted by The Outlook showed that more people had looked at the names of those listed as Ashley Madison users than had visited the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department Sex Offender Registry. There are 152 registered sex offenders in Tallapoosa County,

The name of Dr. James Temple was the first to pop up when talk among our readers turned to someone who has a long record of serving and a dedicated career. He said he considers medicine a hobby rather than work.
For Dr. James Temple, practicing medicine is a labor of love By Corey Arwood Outlook Staff Writer
A local doctor considers his work in the community a labor of love, and at 88, he still practices four days a week in his clinic. On his off day, he makes rounds to nursing homes. Dr. James Temple said the only thing he does not do anymore is make house calls. “I love the city, I love practicing
according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. That means that one in 270 residents in our county is a sex offender. Looking at the numbers city-by-city, the numbers are even more staggering. To help raise awareness, The Outlook will publish the names and photos of all the sex offenders in next weekend’s paper. If you want to be aware, pick up a copy of the Sept. 12 Outlook.
medicine,” Temple said. “That’s my hobby. I don’t golf, I don’t fish, I don’t hunt. I just practice medicine and go to Auburn football games.” He said that he opened Temple Medical Clinic of Alexander City in 1960 and has been a physician in the area for more than 55 years. He was born and raised in Sylacauga and his wife, Fay, who passed away in 2013, was from Camp Hill, so he said they just settled in between.
In 1950 he graduated from pharmacy school at Auburn and in 1957 he finished medical school at what is now UAB. “I just love people, and I like to see them get well … I like to solve their problems,” said Temple. As for his passion for Auburn University sports, especially football, Temple said, “There was a time that I went to every game, regardless.” See TEMPLE, Page 5
Mark Tuggle’s decision not to seek a third term as the District 81’s representative in the Alabama House has created a buzz about who will fill his shoes in 2018. Tuggle isn’t going anywhere for three years, so it’s still a little early to see hats flying into the ring. But that hasn’t kept people from talking. Tallapoosa County Republican Party head Denise Bates said that she had a good idea that Tuggle would not run for another term. She said that while no one has publicly announced intent to seek the seat, some have put out feelers. “I personally knew because we had talked and I fully understand and respect his position,” Bates said. “Since it became public, I’ve had a few people who have lightly talked with us and shown some interest. “That’s not surprising. We have a lot of fine people in this county as well as the others that make up District 81. It’s still a ways off, but I think you will see some very highly qualified people who will make the decision to seek the Republican nomination and step up to represent us well.” Tallapoosa County Probate Court Judge Leon Archer has hinted at interest in the post. Currently, under state law, because Archer will be 70 years old before his See TUGGLE, Page 5

Hear the name Alexander City Rescue Squad and you’d think it got a lot of government support. Not so. According to Ken Cowart, president of the Rescue Squad, the group, which has about 45 members, gets 90 percent of its support from the Lake Martin Area United Way. They get small amounts from the city and county governments. “And if you’re solicited for money and they
tell you it’s for the rescue squad, it’s not,” Cowart said. “We don’t solicit donations and we don’t do any fundraisers.” The formation of the rescue squad, Cowart said, goes back to a drowning in 1959. “We were established in 1959. The lake had a drowning and a bunch of concerned citizens got together That’s when we formed,” Cowart said.
