elcome to summer at Lake Martin! As our excitement grows for the longer days, warm weather and stunning sunsets, so does our enthusiasm for the upcoming event season.

This month, we bring you our annual Summer Events issue, serving as your go-to guide for everything happening around the lake this summer. Our team gathered events from across the Lake Martin community to highlight the biggest happenings of the year. From free live music to outdoor attractions, you won’t miss a moment of fun with LAKE at your side.

We also know there’s nothing quite like hitting the open water and spending a day on the pontoon with family and friends. This summer, we’re introducing our Boating 101 series, answering popular questions to help make the most of your time on the lake. Whether you’re a newly licensed driver or a seasoned captain, this series offers a helpful refresher on the dos and don’ts of boater safety. Kicking off the series, we tackle the burning question: Can you drink alcohol on a boat? Turn to page 40 as we break down the rules for a legal cocktail cruise on Lake Martin.

While cruising the lake by boat, I love spotting the stunning new waterfront homes along the way. This month, we take you inside one of them – a retreat in The Willows where one Birmingham couple teamed up with acclaimed designers and drew inspiration from the natural beauty of Lake Martin to build their dream home. Turn to page 52 for a look inside the Howlands’ serene lakeside escape.

If this is your first trip back to the lake since last fall, you may notice some changes around the area. From new shopping centers to the highly anticipated fire tower at Overlook Park, see what’s new at the lake on page 44.

In addition, an iconic landmark in the community has received a tremendous upgrade. With the growing number of full-time residents in the off-season, Children’s Harbor expanded its beloved chapel, adding more seating, upgraded ADA accessibility and a bridal suite, all made possible by a generous donation from the Russell family. Read more about the exciting additions at Children’s Chapel on page 16.

Without a doubt, the Lake Martin community is filled with some of the most compassionate individuals I’ve ever met – volunteering their time, services and hearts to make a difference.

Recently, I met a little boy named Jude who is battling lifethreatening cancer. After facing numerous rounds of therapy, Jude made a bucket list of activities he dreamed of doing – including a day of fishing on Lake Martin. See how members of the community turned Jude’s simple wish into a day he’ll never forget on page 64.

Here’s to long sunsets, refreshing swims and unforgettable memories this summer at Lake Martin!

Lake Martin News Sailors tackled a variety of unexpected wind conditions while competing in the regatta

64th Annual Punchbowl Regatta set sail on Lake Martin

The Dixie Sailing Club held its 64th annual Punchbowl Regatta on April 12 and 13, just south of Woods Island and Peanut Point. The wellattended event hosted 17 boats among four fleets, with competitors traveling from as far as Nashville, Tennessee, and Chicago, Illinois.

The competition began Saturday at 11:30 a.m. with 7 to 9 knots of wind out of the west. The fleets jockeyed for position as they attempted to predict where the wind was moving across the course.

Home-turf experience was a crucial element to the successful sailing of the first race in the regatta.

The wind continued to build into the second race, and competition grew intense, resulting in two collisions in the C22 fleets and a retirement in the MC Scow fleet. Following the second Catalina 22 race finish, one team had to head back to shore and did not compete in the third race.

During the third race of the day, the wind intensified and the pace of the sailboats was remarkable.

Many boats in all fleets experienced round-ups in the heavy gusts and temporary wind shifts, most sailing right at the edge of their upwind limits – but none elected to shorten sail. The MC Scow fleet surfed their way to the finish, reaching the line just behind the Open fleet. The Catalina 22 fleet finished without delay behind the other two fleets. Races were concluded about 3:30 p.m., and the remaining 13 skippers returned to the docks to secure the boats for the night and enjoy a catered hibachi dinner while socializing at the club pavilion.

The Sunday races began at 9:30 a.m., with each fleet completing one slow lap as the wind steadily declined during the first race. After waiting for the wind to return without any luck, the remaining races were canceled. The Dixie Sailing Club concluded its thrilling Punchbowl Regatta with an awards ceremony at the pavilion.

Master Gardeners gives away hundreds of trees at Plants in Park

Tallapoosa County Master Gardeners Association decided to expand its tree giveaway this year.

Around Arbor Day, the Master Gardeners had their annual tree giveaway, and with years of success, the association decided to make it an all-day event through Plants in the Park. Plants in the Park had 15 different vendors stationed around Dadeville’s Pennington Park.

There were food vendors, baked goods, azaleas, trees, vegetables and herbs, honey, flowers, other organizations like the Dadeville Beautification Board and educational activities.

Organizer Jennifer Gregory said their biggest contributor was Alabama Power, which donated about 750 trees for the giveaway through a grant. The Flower Lady also did a giveaway of a ginkgo tree and a $100 gift card to help promote the event. Additionally, the Coosa County Forestry Commission contributed by giving away 400 trees.

Throughout the event, the association had guest speakers such as arborist Tom Campbell, who discussed how to plant a tree, and county extension director Shane Harris, who covered azalea 101. Local arborist Jerry McGukin was also present to answer questions throughout the event.

Gregory said Master Gardeners had a team of six to be part of the Arbor Day committee that made this day possible. In years past, the association also held a plant sale during the tree giveaways, and each year it sold out. At Plants in the Park, Master Gardeners sold Southern magnolias, Meyer lemon trees, and fountain grass.

Gregory also gave special thanks to Kurt Pfitzner of Pennington Park. She knows he is transitioning out of his role as park owner and is thankful for all the work he did to help spread the word and prepare for the event.

The Master Gardeners hope to do an event like this again next year if logistically things work out, Gregory said. For more information about Master Gardeners, individuals can follow their Facebook page at Tallapoosa County Master Gardeners Association.

The beloved chapel at Children’s Harbor has officially reopened its doors after a two-year renovation, welcoming the growing Lake Martin community with more space, thoughtful amenities and an enduring sense of peace. The remodeled space – now named the Radney Family Children’s Chapel – has been designed to honor the Chapel’s history while accommodating a future shaped by growth and fellowship.

During the warmer months, Children’s Harbor hosts Sunday worship services primarily at Church in the Pines, an outdoor venue on the banks of Lake Martin. But when temperatures drop, worshipers gather indoors at the Children’s Chapel for service.

Until recently, the Chapel could seat about 100 people; however, Children’s Harbor recognized the Chapel’s space was no longer enough as more families settled at the lake year-round, and off-season attendance continued to climb.

“After COVID-19, our worshiping congregation in the off-season has really, really grown,” said Cat Outzen, CEO of Children’s Harbor. “When we finally were able to open up again and have services in the Chapel, we realized that we were not going to be able to fit even our minimum amount of people that have started coming in the non-summer season.

That’s when the Russells decided to see what we

could do to make our chapel as big as we can, but without disturbing the actual architecture and natural surroundings.”

That vision led to a significant renovation and expansion effort, made possible by a $4 million donation from Children’s Harbor co-founders Ben and Luanne Russell. The Russells dedicated the chapel to Annie Laurie and Billy Radney, Luanne’s parents, in honor of their memory.

“Preserving the legacy of the Children’s Chapel was a heartfelt decision, ensuring that it remains a beacon of hope and faith for generations to come,” said Luanne Russell. “This renovation honors our commitment to serving families in need while also strengthening our ties to the Lake Martin community. We are excited to see the Chapel continue its mission of offering refuge and renewal to all who step inside.”

The Chapel’s structure was extended to increase capacity without compromising its historic architectural design. Inside, original windows and lighting were preserved, while a newly reconfigured layout included the addition of 88 seats, bringing total capacity to 212 for Sunday services.

Accessibility was also a top priority. The renovated chapel now includes ADA-compliant ramps as well as additional accessibility entry points. A new

driveway with a covered portico makes it easier for guests to be dropped off, and the parking lot has been expanded and resurfaced.

During the renovations, it was crucial to the Children’s Harbor team to ensure that the natural scenic beauty surrounding the Chapel was preserved.

“Mr. Russell is very particular about wanting to make sure that we have that natural aesthetic,” said Outzen. “We had to make sure that we preserved as many trees as possible. We went to the drawing board and thought, ‘How can we do this renovation to best preserve the natural environment?’”

One of the most significant additions to the Chapel is a bridal suite, offering on-site space for couples preparing to say “I do.” Previously, wedding parties would use Hank Williams’ Cabin or an off-site location to get ready.

“The new bridal suite has a refrigerator,” said Outzen. “It also has seating, a large vanity and high hooks, so you can put your wedding dress up so it doesn’t get wrinkled. It’s a pretty nice size.”

In addition to structural improvements, the memorial area outside the Chapel also received a sentimental update. Ground-level plaques were relocated to a memorial wall and paired with a new Memorial Walk.

The Camp Smile-A-Mile memorial was moved to a space near the gazebo, where tiered seating creates a quiet spot for remembrance and reflection during the camp’s opening memorial ceremonies.

The dedication ceremony for Children’s Chapel was held April 6. While the grounds had previously been consecrated, members of the Children’s Harbor men’s and women’s Bible study groups anointed the structures and surrounding site during the dedication event.

New communion vessels, including chalices shaped like lighthouses and communion patens shaped like dory boats, were commissioned by Children’s Harbor Chaplain Mike Densmore and created by local artists.

“Mike Densmore interviewed 13 different artists to try to come up with this vision,” said Outzen. “One communion set was commissioned by the St. James Episcopal Potter’s Guild in Alexander City and a couple from Jacksonville State. It was very special.”

For the Children’s Harbor team, the renovation marks more than an updated remodel or additional seating – it’s about preserving a space that has held sentimental value for many while preparing it to welcome more individuals from the community in the years ahead.

“Our hopes for the Chapel with these new renovations is just to honor and continue the legacy and tradition of Children’s Harbor,” said Outzen. “The Chapel and our lighthouse are a beacon of hope, not only to the families that we serve, but to our community. So we’re very happy that this renovation can support more of our worshiping congregation and also fortify those structures to make sure they’re there for generations to come.”

May 3 Derby Day at the Stables

Celebrate “the most exciting two minutes in sports” with an afternoon of tradition, fashion and fun at The Stables. Guests are encouraged to don classic Derby attire, including seersucker suits, bowties and colorful hats. Come listen to two dozen All-State performers from Dadeville, with accompanists led by Lila Meadows. The performance begins at 7:00 p.m. and runs until 8:30 p.m. at the Dadeville Performing Arts Center. The chorus has developed into an accomplished ensemble, singing concert and pop hits. In addition, the Shane Dickerson Woodwind Studio soloists will perform selections from their annual recital. Tickets are available for $10 online or $15 at the door. Kids attend free. The New Site River Festival brings a full day of family and community fun, with two exciting fundraisers benefiting local youth sports. The day kicks off with a cornhole tournament co-hosted by East Alabama Cornhole, featuring two blind draw competitions at the New Site Old Gymnasium. The cost is $30 for the first tournament and $25 for the second tournament, with proceeds supporting the New Site Youth Basketball League. Sign-in begins at 10:30 a.m., and bags fly at 11 a.m. Alongside the tournament, attendees can enjoy food trucks, craft vendors, live music and a bounce house. May 28 AACA Watercolor Workshop

Watercolorist Nancy Frommert will conduct a basic watercolor techniques workshop at the May meeting of the Artists Association of Central Alabama.

Frommert will discuss the tools needed to get started in watercolor and teach color mixing, dry and wet brush techniques, applying washes and more. Lunch will be provided, and participants will leave the workshop with an original greeting card created in the session. The workshop will be held at the Senior Center at the Charles E. Bailey Sportplex in Alexander City from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fee for the workshop is $25 for AACA members and $35 for nonmembers.

RXR FEST Kick off a fun-filled summer at Lake Martin with free live music at Russell Crossroads on Memorial Day weekend.

RXR Fest returns Friday, May 23, with music from one of Lake Martin’s favorite cover bands, The Bank Walkers.

In addition to their known crowd favorites, The Bank Walkers have added a number of new songs to their playlist for an exciting new concert experience. The Bank Walkers kick off RXR Fest Friday evening at 6:30 p.m., followed by Mississippi Hall of Famer Webb Wilder at 8 p.m. Wilder takes the stage as a prominent Americana artist, playing a variety of rock ‘n’ roll and classic Southern rock hit songs from his series of albums, putting on a high-energy performance fans won’t want to miss.

There’s nothing quite like hitting the open water on Lake Martin. A sunny Saturday at Chimney Rock, music drifting over the waves and that classic sunset over the big water – it’s the kind of atmosphere that calls for good company and maybe even a cold drink in hand. But before cracking open that can or popping open the cooler, it’s worth knowing what’s actually legal when it comes to alcohol and boating in Alabama.

Here’s the good news: Yes, it is legal to enjoy a drink on a boat if you’re of age and not the one behind the wheel. In Alabama, passengers 21 and older can possess and consume alcoholic beverages while onboard a vessel. The key word here? Passenger. Boating under the influence is very much illegal – and the rules are strict.

Alabama law treats BUIs with the same seriousness as DUIs. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit is 0.08 percent, and being over that threshold while operating a boat could land you in serious trouble. Penalties for a first offense include fines up to $2,100, a 90-day license suspension and potentially jail time. Second and third offenses ramp up to steeper fines, longer suspensions and mandatory community service or incarceration.

In addition, if a person is operating a vessel while intoxicated and there is someone under 14 years old on board, they could face double the minimum punishment.

It’s not just boats, either.

The law also applies to operating personal watercraft, water skis, wakeboards or any marine device. If it floats and has the potential for speed or fun, a sober operator is required. And if a marine police officer suspects impairment, refusal to

take a field sobriety or breath test results in automatic suspension of your vessel license – no exceptions.

It is also important to note that minors can get in trouble if alcohol is on board a boat, even if they’re not drinking. The legal boating age in Alabama is 14 (or 12 with supervision of a licensed operator 21 years or older), and it’s not uncommon for teenagers to take out the family boat for a day of fun. But if there’s alcohol left behind onboard and they’re stopped by marine police, they could be arrested. That’s a weekend memory no one wants to make, so be sure to clear your watercraft of alcohol after each ride.

So how do you keep things safe and fun? It’s simple: Designate a sober captain. Just like choosing a designated driver for a night out, appoint someone responsible to steer the boat. Everyone else is free to kick back and enjoy the ride – within reason, of course.

Passengers are still expected to remain in control and not endanger themselves or others.

If your plans involve waterskiing, tubing or wakeboarding, it’s best to save the drinks for after. These activities require quick reflexes and a clear head.

Mixing them with alcohol increases the risk of injury or a boating accident. Not to mention, it’s illegal.

Lake Martin is a place where fun summertime memories are made. With a little planning and respect for the rules, everyone can enjoy the lake safely and legally. So toast the sunset, cheer the wakeboarder and thank your captain. Just make sure someone’s steering the boat sober.

What makes a house a home? For Rob and Mary Beth Howland, it’s when they created a space of peace and tranquility on Lake Martin.

In 2022, the Birmingham natives settled into their lakefront property, nestled within The Willows of Willow Point. With all three of their youngsters pursuing collegiate degrees at universities in Texas, the Howlands were adamant about finding a location in which they could host family and friends.

“I love being on the lake here,” said Mary Beth.

“We have so many friends on Lake Martin, and it is exceptionally clean and beautiful. I particularly love how the lots at The Willows are flat and situated in a somewhat secluded slough. This was a major selling point for us back in 2020.”

With the ideal location in place, all that was left for the Howlands to do was bring their vision of a

family home to life. Before moving to Lake Martin, the Howlands started their family and spent time with Mary Beth’s extended family on Weiss Lake in Gadsden, Alabama for many years. Rob has made a living working in student housing across the Southeast, leading him to meet his now friend, longtime business partner and designer of his new lake house, Louis Nequette.

Over the years, Nequette has developed a reputation as a prominent upscale designer and masterplanner in Alabama and beyond, working on several local projects that included contributing concepts for Lake Martin’s Russell Cabins throughout the duration of his career.

Nequette has since become a monumental factor in the upscale design world, moving the needle for innovation and expressive designs.

Nequette’s visual paintbrush can be seen throughout the distinguished Howland property, thoughtfully designing the home to work with the natural topography of Lake Martin, allowing the presence of the water to be felt from every angle of the Howland home.

“With any lake project, it’s about responding to the magic of the site itself,” said Nequette.

Spanning 4,000 square feet, the five-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom lake home features distinctly designed entertainment areas throughout the expansive grounds.

The grand 8-foot front doors offer an impressive, castle-like entrance into the home, providing sweeping waterfront views for the Howlands. Positioned at the heart of the lake house is the kitchen, serving as a central gathering space for entertaining.

To the west, the outdoor patio is simply a sliding door away, offering the Howlands a luxurious living space complete with a fireplace, plush furniture and a screened perimeter for added comfort. The outdoor area exemplifies Nequette’s commitment to his original vision of creating a home perfectly suited

for lake living.

The expansive main living level provides stunning views of Lake Martin from multiple vantage points, thoughtfully designed to embrace natural lighting. This approach was taken to ensure that every space within the home felt deeply connected to the outdoors, creating a seamless relationship between the lake house and the natural landscape of the water.

Tasteful pinewood beams stretch across the ceiling, and natural elements and dark color palettes add to the timeless elegance of the home. One of the most appealing elements of the Howlands’ lake house is the high-caliber landscape that surrounds it. The Howlands called upon a familiar team for their landscaping needs in Falkner Gardens. Based out of Birmingham, Falkner Gardens is a high-end residential design-build landscape firm.

Falkner Gardens works diligently to highlight the surrounding natural beauty of a property and maximize it to meet the homeowners’ needs. Working

alongside the Howlands, Nequette and TCC General Contractors, Falkner had a philosophy of amplifying the aesthetic that was created by Nequette’s initial vision of maintaining purity.

“We tried to create multi-seasonal destinations outside throughout the property, you’ll notice the fire pit as well as the courtyard,” said Peter Falkner.

“We also utilized a number of pots and planters that really bring the entire space together.”

Falkner Gardens is known for its quality through the usage of high-end materials, often utilizing local Alabama businesses as its key source for stone, trees and shrubbery.

The collaboration between the Howlands, Nequette and Falkner proved to be a triumph in their work at The Willows. Lake Martin holds a lasting place in many people’s hearts, and with this stunning home right on the water, new moments are sure to be cherished.

Lake Martin has always been a place for dreamers.

Some chase the thrill of a sailing regatta. Others imagine taking the stage under bright lights for a cheering crowd.

But for one little boy, his dream was simple – to cast a line into the water and feel the tug of a fish.

Jude Schroeder, an 8-year-old boy from Peachtree City, Georgia, has always been an active child. He is a passionate baseball player, proudly taking the field as a shortstop and pitcher for his youth team. But recently, Jude – the most athletic one in his family – had begun displaying some uncharacteristic clumsiness.

“It was the end of December, or the start of January, that we noticed he was walking goofy,” said Nathan Schroeder, Jude’s father. “It seemed like he was just growing or something, but he was a little bit uncoordinated. He just kept falling, usually in our kitchen, on his socks.”

The family began to notice additional symptoms, such as drooping in Jude’s eye, prompting the Schroeders to bring their son to see a pediatrician.

Initial bloodwork didn’t reveal anything unusual; however, as the symptoms persisted, the family followed

advice from a friend and moved forward with imaging of Jude’s brain. On January 18, the Schroeders received the devastating news that Jude had been diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma – a rare and aggressive brain tumor that develops in the pons, a vital part of the brainstem. There is currently no cure.

“It’s hard to know you’re dying,” said Nathan. “Jude was sad and depressed for a while. He had to have a brain biopsy a few days later, and he wasn’t able to walk. He had to use a walker to get around.”

Following his diagnosis, Jude underwent six weeks of radiation to help shrink the tumor. While radiation wouldn’t cure the cancer, it did buy Jude precious time.

With that in mind, the family set out to check off a few of Jude’s bucket list of dreams – one of which was to go fishing on Lake Martin.

For the past four years, the Schroeder family has spent summers and weekends creating beloved memories at their Lake Martin home. During that time, they have also befriended one of their neighbors, David Hare, owner of Alex City Guide Service.

Following Jude’s final radiation treatment on March 17, Jude’s father contacted Hare for a family fishing trip.

“We have known David for a few years and had gone fishing with him before,” said Nathan. “So I asked him if we could go with him again after Jude’s radiation was done. David said yes and offered to take Jude out on his own dime, not ours.”

Hare not only offered the fishing trip at no cost, but began making plans to turn the outing into a day Jude and his family would never forget.

“I wanted to do more than just take Jude fishing,” said Hare. “I wanted to do what I could on the lake to make it a special day for him.”

Hare reached out to Chad and Danah Gilliland, owners of BoonDocks at Bay Pine, to ask if the couple would host a private fish fry for the group following their fishing trip. Moved by Jude’s story, the Gillilands quickly embraced the idea, graciously agreeing to open their restaurant doors for the crew.

To add to the magic of the day, Chad connected with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency to arrange for a

private blue-light escort from the marine police to lead Jude to BoonDocks for the fish fry.

Not only did ALEA agree to accommodate the ride for Jude on its boat, the marine patrol went the extra step and put together a goodie bag of items, including state trooper shirts, a teddy bear, keychains and officially issued patrol caps, among many other items.

“Doing something like this means the world to us,” said Trooper Taylor, senior trooper with the Marine Patrol Division. “We love getting out here doing things for the kids. We hope it meant just as much to him as it did for us. We just wanted to show him a good time and come together as a community.”

“A lot of law enforcement officers get into this job to protect and serve,” said Senior Trooper Johnny Walker.

“But for the most part, it’s to make a difference. And doing something like this, you can really make a difference in someone’s life and give them a chance to do something that most people don’t get to do.”

family friends. The group reeled in an impressive catch, with some fish weighing as much as 15 pounds.

Todd Clark, a long-time friend and fishing client of Hare, was also on board to help throughout the day as a volunteer deckhand. Adding to the special experience, a few of Hare’s longtime clients from Montana and Wyoming brought a drone to film the morning, capturing every moment of the big day.

“It was such a relief when Jude caught that first fish,” said Hare. “I stayed awake all night worrying that we might not catch one. It’s the most pressure I’ve ever had on me as far as running trips. was going to catch a fish; I didn’t care what I had to do.

He was going to catch a fish somewhere, somehow.”

It wasn’t long into the trip before Jude caught the first fish, igniting the boy with pure joy.

The Lake Martin community continued to rally together to add to the fishing day experience. Knowing Jude was on a restricted medical diet, Clark arranged for special meal accommodations. Sugar-free sodas, a specialty cake from Grand Bakery with Jude’s name and the date of the trip, and ice cream that fit his dietary needs were all part of the carefully planned menu.

In addition, Hare’s brother, Matt, and his wife, Jan, worked behind the scenes at BoonDocks to prepare for the fish fry, along with another friend, Kenneth Brown.

Will Tampling, a family friend and realtor for the Schroeders, also joined in the special day. Tampling acquired all of the sides for the fish fry that accommodated Jude’s diet, including green beans, carrots and coleslaw, providing all of the essentials for the group’s meal.

Though the day was filled with emotion, Jude was all smiles.

“Everybody that day, somewhere, somehow, shed a tear, except for Jude,” said Hare. “He was just appreciative of everything, and he was so excited to catch fish. Jude walked up and said, ‘I just want y’all to know this has been the best day of my life.’”

With generous hearts and an outpouring of support, what unfolded that day was more than just a fishing trip – it was Lake Martin’s compassion in action, a community united with a shared purpose to give one little boy a day he’d never forget.

The Spotted Sandpiper is a one-of-akind shorebird – a handsome, mediumsized native with some memorable, quirky habits.

Although there are 44 other shorebirds found in Alabama, the Spotted Sandpiper has several characteristics that make it easy to identify.

First is its appearance: During the spring and summer breeding season, this bird has pronounced, rather large dark spots on its white breast and an orange bill, often with a dark tip. During winter, the Spotted Sandpiper loses its spots and has a solid white breast, and its bill may be more of a dark gray. Biologists have found that females with the most distinct spots are healthier than those that are less spotty, so a well-spotted gal is more likely to find a mate.

This bird has a white wing stripe visible in flight. It also has dark and light eye stripes in line with its bill. Spotted Sandpipers are mostly gray, brown and white birds. Female Spotted Sandpipers are 20 to 25 percent larger than males.

The second ID tip is this bird’s habit of bobbing its tail up and down nearly

constantly as it walks and hops along the shoreline. Spotted Sandpiper hatchlings start bobbing or teetering right after they emerge from their eggs, and they usually only stop bobbing their tails during courtship and when they are alarmed or aggressive.

This bobbing habit accounts for a number of “moving” Spotted Sandpiper nicknames: Teeter-peep, Teeter-snipe, Tip-tail, Teeter-bob and Jerk bird.

Actitis macularius is the scientific name for this bird. In English, it means “spotted coast-dweller.”

These birds also have a unique way of flying, often described as stuttering, which involves quick, stiff wingbeats followed by short glides.

Finally, Spotted Sandpipers are almost always found around water – fresh or salt – and they are as happy at the beach as they are on the side of a stream, river or lake, whether it’s on a rocky shore or in a muddy marsh. These birds have been spotted from sea level to as high as 14,000 feet in elevation.

America, with breeding grounds that cover the middle of the United States and extend all the way to Canada and Alaska. Its nonbreeding range covers the southern portion of the U.S. and extends through most of South America. Spotted Sandpipers are truly a bird of the Americas.

Now to its most quirky habit: breeding.

From a human’s point of view, this bird swaps the traditional roles of the sexes. The female claims a territory and defends it against intruders, while the male takes on most of the parenting, sitting on eggs until they hatch and then caring for the baby sandpipers. Scientists have discovered that during most of the year, male Spotted Sandpipers have 10 times more testosterone than their mates, but during breeding season, female testosterone levels increase seven times as they become more aggressive defending their territory.

Many female Spotted Sandpipers engage in an unusual behavior called polyandry, which means they mate with a male and lay a clutch of eggs for him to raise, then find another mate and lay a clutch of eggs for him to raise and so on – withup to five males per season. This means a popular female can have close to 20 babies a year, which is much more than similar birds. Females that don’t find multiple mates often lend a hand raising their initial round of chicks.

When it comes time to start a family, female Spotted Sandpipers will typically arrive at the breeding grounds first to claim and defend a territory.

Either the male or female will choose a nesting site

near a shoreline, usually under a protective plant with big leaves or thorns or next to a fallen tree. Nests are dug into the ground in a shallow bowl shape and then lined with dry grass, moss, stems and other material.

Females lay three to five eggs that hatch in roughly three weeks. Hatchlings begin walking and eating on day one, actively hunting at three days old and flying at the ripe old age of 18 days. They leave their parents’ care at about one month old and will be breeding age the following season.

Spotted Sandpipers forage by poking their rather long bills into mud, sand or shallow water to grab insects such as mayflies, crickets, beetles and caterpillars, as well as snails, worms, small crustaceans, fish and even bits of carrion. They’re quick hunters and can lunge forward to pick bugs off plants or snatch flying insects out of the air.

When threatened, Spotted Sandpipers “get big” by standing tall, spreading their wings, opening their bills and fanning out their tail feathers. If a predator comes around a nest, these birds will fake a broken wing, squealing and flapping as if they are unable to fly while moving from the nest to lure the predator away.

The oldest recorded Spotted Sandpiper was a 12-year-old male that was banded and recaptured in 1979.

For the last 53 years, the Lake Martin Resource Association has remained steadfast in its mission to protect, preserve and promote the health, recreational opportunities, leisure and prosperity of Lake Martin and surrounding communities – both for today and for future generations. With the continued dedication of its working board of directors and incredible community engagement, we are entering into 2025 with renewed energy and a focus on expanding our impact as well as increasing opportunities for community involvement.

In 2024, LMRA welcomed eight new members to its board of directors. These individuals have already brought tremendous value to the organization, jumping in with both feet to support and lead initiatives aligned with its core pillars: water safety, environmental education and advocacy. Their passion and commitment are already driving positive change around the lake, and the organization is grateful to have such engaged leaders dedicated to LMRA’s mission.

As the 2025 lake season approaches, LMRA remains focused on our most important goal: saving lives. We are continuing to do this through community education about safe on-water practices and raising awareness about the environmental responsibilities we all share as stewards of Lake Martin.

One of the most impactful ways we save lives is through our boater education efforts and buoy program, both managed and overseen by Randy Kirkland, with the great support of Bill Duckworth and Frances Morris from our board and several willing and capable volunteers.

You know summer is just around the corner when the boater training courses are conducted to assist eager vessel “captains” in obtaining the knowledge and expertise to properly command a vessel on Lake Martin.

In March, LMRA, TowBoat Lake Martin and Alabama Law Enforcement Agency partnered once again with Russell Marine to support the Women on Lake Martin Boater Training Classes at Kowaliga and River North marinas. These popular sessions were filled with more than 50 women eager

to learn the rules of the water and gain hands-on experience captaining their boats.

Trooper Walker has a passion for boater education and provided excellent insights into the rules of the road, updates to the new laws impacting Lake Martin and answered participants’ questions. The LMRA-trained captains and first mates shared their knowledge and experience with participants to provide live driving, docking and tying off a vessel. The combination of classroom learning and onwater training has proven invaluable for both new and experienced boaters.

Did you know LMRA is a one-of-a-kind organization in the United States that supports ALEA in the placement and maintenance of nearly 470 buoys across Lake Martin?

On many other bodies of water in Alabama, it is the ALEA team LMRA that has the placement and manBY JODIE MCGIRT agement of buoys in addition to their regular patrol duties.The volunteer hours and efforts by LMRA and our volunteers allow the ALEA team to focus on their core job responsibility of education and enforcement to assure a safe boating experience on Lake Martin. This support to ALEA wouldn’t be possible without your donations, the leadership of Randy Kirkland, the dedication of our Buoy Maintenance Team and the commitment of our 11 active Buoy Watch volunteers.

When it comes to environmental impact, LMRA continues to lead through cleanup efforts and educational outreach.

Last summer, board member Steve Robinson took over the leadership of our environmental efforts and continued the great work from John Thompson. Steve coordinated the 2024 Renew Our Rivers event, the Reuben Thornton Memorial

Spring Cleanup for LMRA and is an integral part of the regular cleanup efforts to support Michelle West of Main Street Alexander City.

LMRA is also committed to the long-term sustainability of Lake Martin’s water quality and quantity. Through active involvement in the Martin Dam relicensing process and lakelevel guidelines, Steve Forehand continues to advocate for Lake Martin at the local, state and federal levels – ensuring that the lake’s voice is heard and its future protected.

The Green Life

Salads are often referenced as the ultimate health food, largely in part to the base of raw leafy greens.

Leafy greens are some of the most nutrient-dense vegetables we can eat. Fresh greens are packed with vitamins and minerals and offer a crisp texture that pairs well with other vegetables, meat, whole grains and cheese. This superfood group of vegetables includes a selection of leaves in different shapes, sizes, colors and tastes. You will find leafy greens that range from tender baby spinach to crunchy romaine, soft butter lettuce and spicy arugula. Greens are affordable and convenient. The precut and prewashed leafy greens are an excellent time-saving choice. The question is, how do these differ nutritionally?

Calorie per calorie, leafy greens pack more vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals than any other group of food. They add a good source of fiber, protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Leafy greens contribute a rich source of vitamins A, K, and E; calcium; potassium; fiber; antioxidants; and folate. Greens are low in calories, sodium, saturated fat, total fat and sugar.

Thousands of bioactive compounds in leafy greens work synergistically to promote overall health and reduce disease. A diet high in leafy greens contributes to overall cellular health, which plays a vital role in decreasing chronic diseases associated with DNA damage and cellular dysfunction, such as cancer, neurodegenerative diseases and cardiometabolic conditions.

Leafy greens have an anti-inflammatory effect, protecting against heart disease, hypertension, obesity and

type 2 diabetes. They have also been shown to reduce the risk of macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes, cognitive decline and bone health.

In addition, greens have a positive impact on the gut. This is mainly due to the fiber, probiotic fiber, antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties that promote beneficial bacteria within the gut. To optimize the nutrients in greens, it is recommended to make a few dietary tweaks. The inclusion of a healthy fat such as nuts, seeds, olive oil and avocado with the greens helps to increase the absorption of vitamin K, other fat-soluble vitamins, and fatsoluble compounds. Leafy green vegetables are contraindicated in patients taking the anticoagulant medications Coumadin and warfarin. This is due to the high level of vitamin K in greens. A sudden increase in consumption of vitamin K can cause these drugs to become less effective, leading to a higher risk of blood clots.

intake of vitamin K. In general, the darker the green, the more nutrients it offers. Some taste better eaten raw, and it is most beneficial when you switch up your greens. The serving size for greens is 2 cups raw and 1 cup cooked.

The following are the leafy greens that pack the biggest nutritional punch.

SPINACH

Considered a superfood packed with vitamins A, C and K, as well as potassium, folate and magnesium, spinach is incredibly delicious and versatile. This makes spinach a top choice for salads.

Spinach comes in mature and baby forms and contributes 24 calories per 2 cups, 3 grams of protein, 2 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of carbohydrates.

KALE

Baby kale is a favorite. Kale belongs to the cruciferous family, a nutrient-dense group of vegetables.

It is smaller and more tender, although nutritionally similar to mature varieties. Two cups of baby kale offer 24 calories, 3 grams of protein, 3 grams fiber and 3 grams of carbohydrates. It is also packed with 55 milligrams of vitamin C, accounting for 60 percent of one’s daily value. Vitamin C strengthens our immune health, stimulates collagen production and promotes healing, along with gut-healthy fiber and protein. Kale is also an excellent non-dairy source of calcium. It also provides folate, manganese, antioxidants and flavonoids.

ARUGULA

You may have heard arugula also referred to as rocket. Arugula is a peppery green that is rich in nutrients and low in calories and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Two cups of raw baby arugula provide 10 calories, 2 grams of protein, 1 gram of fiber and 3 grams of carbohydrates. It is rich in vitamins C and A, folate and magnesium. It is also an excellent source of vitamin K, providing nearly 20 percent of the daily value in a two-cup serving.

WATERCRESS

Watercress is one of the healthiest greens you can eat; however, it can be much more difficult to find in grocery stores. Watercress is a nutrient-dense cruciferous green with a spicy flavor. Two cups of watercress provide 7 calories, 1.5 grams of protein, 0.5 grams of fiber and 1 gram of carbohydrate.

A study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave watercress a perfect score on its scale of powerhouse fruits and vegetables. Watercress is naturally rich in vitamin A from beta carotene, as well as vitamins C and K. Plant compounds called phytonutrients in watercress may add benefits to health conditions like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

ROMAINE

This leafy green is lighter, with a crisp texture. Two cups provide 15 calories, 1 gram of fiber, 2 grams of protein and 3 grams of carbohydrate. Romaine is rich in vitamins A and K, as well as calcium, potassium, iron and magnesium. It is an excellent source of beta carotene, the precursor to vitamin A, and a powerful antioxidant that supports eye health and protects cells from free radicals.

ICEBERG LETTUCE

If iceberg lettuce is compared to other greens, it is significantly less nutrient-dense. However, it still has a place in our diet and should not be forgotten. Two cups of chopped iceberg deliver 15 calories, 1 gram of protein, 1 gram of fiber and 3 grams of carbohydrates. It does contain some folate and vitamin A and is extremely hydrating. Iceberg lettuce is more than 95 percent water, and this will contribute to your fluid intake. Let’s face it: Iceberg lettuce brings the crispy to a Cobb salad or a lettuce wrap and tastes delicious with a fresh tomato.

It is milder than most lettuce and, therefore, a favorite of younger people.

Ingredients

1 filet of salmon gravlax or smoked salmon 8 ounces cream cheese 4 ounces sour cream 1 generous bushel of fresh dill, chopped 1 to 2 garlic cloves, minced (a microplane is preferred) 1 lemon (zest from half and all of the juice) 1 red onion, shaved 1 cucumber, thinly sliced 3 hard-boiled eggs, grated 1 baguette of choice (ciabatta suggested)

Directions

Mix the cream cheese, sour cream, dill, lemon zest, lemon juice and garlic cloves in a bowl.

Season with salt and pepper to taste. Boil the eggs and cool. Grate or finely chop and set aside. Toast the bread on both sides and allow to cool before assembling. Spread the cheese mixture generously on one side. Place the salmon over the spread. Top with onion, cucumber and grated egg. Enjoy.

TOP 5 BAITS 1

In last month’s article, I shared my opinion on the top five baits in bass fishing. In Part II, we’ll take a look at the almost-top five and a few others we’ll call honorable mentions. It was no surprise that in the recent Major League Fishing Redcrest Championship, two of the top five baits were dominant on Lake Guntersville.

No. 1 on the list was the Senko (and all other brands of 5-inch stick baits), and it proved to be one of the most dominant baits for a large percentage of the top finishers. The event was eventually won by Alabama’s Dustin Connell.

One thing stood out after putting together the list: Four of the five baits have little – or what we’ll call subtle – action. It left me thinking that less is often more when it comes to tricking increasingly pressured bass these days. The outlier would be the Chatterbait, with its erratic, almost violent action on the other end of the spectrum.

There were several baits that were tempting to include in that top five. Let’s call them the "almost-top-five" exceptional baits and rigs that continue to produce day in and day out for bass anglers across the country.

PART 1I

DROP SHOT/WORM

This one easily could be in the top five, and if we’re talking about the country as a whole, it would probably bump the shaky head for me. But for some reason, the shaky head has the edge, especially when it comes to both numbers and quality bass in our area of Alabama.

The drop shot rig has a weight at the bottom of the rig with a small hook tied usually about 6 to 12 inches above the weight. Small finesse worms or plastics can be rigged on the hook to trigger bites from finicky bass. It has been a huge player on the tournament scene since our late friend Aaron Martens began dominating in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Typically used with lighter line and spinning tackle, the drop shot can be placed in high-percentage areas in depths as shallow as 2 feet or much deeper. The deepest I’ve ever caught a bass on a drop shot (on the bottom) was in 65 feet of water, so its range is incredible. The weight lands on the bottom, and the worm above is left suspended just off the bottom, where it’s easy for the bass to see. The slightest movements of the rod tip will bring the bait to life.

This drop shot setup can remain in a potential strike zone for long periods of time, with the angler giving the bait life-like action the whole time.

The small offerings can be too much to resist, even for a finicky bass in clear water or for those fish that have been getting a lot of fishing pressure.

SUSPENDING JERKBAIT

It pains me not to be able to put a jerkbait in the top five. It’s such an effective bait and has been a staple in my arsenal throughout my career. Its limitations are only with depth. The other baits have an effective depth range beyond that of a jerkbait; therefore, they ultimately have the advantage when all things are considered.

But when the fish are using depths that are in range of a jerkbait, it can be lights out. This is especially true on fisheries with good water clarity, like Lake Martin. Suspending jerkbaits began gaining traction in the late ‘90s, and when Lucky Craft introduced the Pointer series that had weight transfer systems, the game was changed forever. The sideto-side darting action mimics an injured or fleeing baitfish and triggers bites.

Since the introduction of forward-facing sonar in 2016, anglers have been able to maximize their efficiency with jerkbaits. Using the technology to pinpoint cover on the bottom and specific fish allows for precision casts with the jerkbait. Experienced anglers can watch the bait working back to the boat and keep it suspended in the potential strike zone longer, even playing a cat-and-mouse game with the fish to get them to bite.

HONORABLE MENTIONS These baits, at one time or another, have probably been on a lot of anglers’ personal top five lists. They are still catching bass to this day, and most are only limited by the depth where they can be effective.

If the list were “top five baits to get a bite on,” this would be at the top for most bass anglers.

SOFT PLASTIC CREATURE BAITS

There are a lot of different versions of soft plastic creatures, as we call them. They come in various body shapes and appendages, and all are effective at catching bass. What stands out to me most about baits in the creature category is that they’re a great option when a jig just seems like too much for some reason.

The first creature bait that really took the bass world by storm was the Zoom Brush Hog. Later, similar baits came on the scene and have been wildly successful. For example: beavers, pacas, rage bugs and more.

SQUAREBILL (1.5")

The squarebill crankbait is an allterrain vehicle with treble hooks. The square-shaped bill deflects off cover like rocks, stumps and tree limbs, triggering bites. Its only limitation is depth. Most squarebill crankbaits are only effective down to about 5 feet of water. Any fish deeper than that requires a crankbait with a different bill, and some of the bait’s deflective properties are lost.

Same as the buzzbait.

If it weren’t for the chatterbait, the spinnerbait and squarebill would probably both make the top five. Still, the spinnerbait is highly effective – especially around Lake Martin.

And this wraps up, in my opinion, the best baits in bass fishing right now. The top five are still proving they belong based on recent tournament results.

Additionally, there are several more that should be in everyone’s arsenal because they’ve stood the test of time, triggering bites on a regular basis for anglers across the country.

Golfer's Honor

Hello, Lake Martin, and welcome to the very special month of May! On the second Sunday in May, we celebrate Mother’s Day, an annual observance honoring mothers and their influence on society. On the third Saturday in May, we celebrate Armed Forces Day, a tribute to the men and women currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. On the final Monday, we observe Memorial Day, honoring and mourning the military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. All three observances take place in May and are worthy of our focus and prayers of thanksgiving.

Many describe golf as a “game of honor” because players are expected to self-police and uphold the rules.

Golfers rely on an honor system in which they call penalties on themselves, as there are no umpires or referees.

This aspect of honesty attracted me to the game as a young teenager. The rulebook and etiquette also add to the honor of the game.

The rules of golf are established to maintain fairness in a game meant to be played with honor. Although the rules are updated every four years, governing bodies consider the positive evolution of the sport. Golfers honor the game by following the rules as provided.

Etiquette also plays a vital role in respecting fellow players and golf course grounds. Staying quiet during swings, acknowledging honor on the teeing ground and assisting in ball searches are just a few great examples of proper etiquette. As players rake bunkers, fill divots with sand and repair ball marks on the greens, they honor the gift of golf by doing their part in maintaining the course conditions. Take a moment to reflect on your own behavior and decide honestly if you are honoring the game when you play.

Throughout my 35-year PGA career, I have participated in many events. I can honestly say I’ve never witnessed a peer cheat in a tournament. That speaks volumes about how much we love, respect and honor the game.

Unfortunately, I have encountered amateur players who were caught cheating, forcing my entry into the situation.

It saddens me when this happens, and those who don’t honor the game are not worthy of participation in it.

All golfers enter this game humbly. Over time, we get the opportunity to play with others who are far more advanced than we are. Better golfers remember when they first started and how patience and understanding were granted to them as they learned to improve with tips, advice and support. This is an honorable way to represent the game, as beginners need that encouragement and appreciate it greatly. As they develop over the years, they pay it forward to beginners with whom they participate on the golf course.

Remember to honor the game with how you carry yourself during a round of golf. Temper is often a byproduct of passion, which is an expression of frustration by someone who cares deeply. This is a personal weakness of mine that requires my focus to improve with each round played. Honorable people do not suppress their temper, but they do learn to control it. A good golfer uses the disappointment of one hole to create power and focus on the next hole. Walk with me as we work on improving our on-course behavior.
