est we forget, November is the month for remembrance; a time to contemplate the sacrifices made by generations of people in pursuit of peace.

The shame is that lessons have not been learned and war and famine are still a sorry part of life in the 21st Century, But it is not only on foreign fields that hardship is being encountered on a daily basis. Even in our own streets, people are going hungry.

In this edition of TakeOne, as well as a tribute to an 11-ton veteran of the First World War (page 7), we also feature two foodbanks, helping stave off hunger for families throughout Norfolk and Suffolk. It includes the chance to do your bit by filling a ‘reverse Advent calendar’ box (p6).

Charity life savers gain lift from cyclathon fundraisers ‘Just the day before, the air ambulance was dispatched to provide emergency care for a cyclist hit by a car in Norwich rush hour’ Alan Franks

E

ast Anglia Air Ambulance is more than £1,700 better off thanks to the efforts of South Norfolk cyclists.

Members of Diss Cycling Club and the Diss Cyclathon organising team have presented East Anglia Air Ambulance with a cheque.

The money was raised by cyclists at the Diss Cyclathon in June and will go towards the on-going running costs of this vital service.

Diss Cyclathon organiser Alan Franks said: “When we came up with the idea of the Cyclathon, it was always with a view to raising money to support local cycling and the Air Ambulance and it is great to be able to help them in their work.”

Plans are already well underway for next year’s Cyclathon on June 25, 2017 and the aim is to make even bigger and better.

Neil Collins, from Diss Cycling Club, said “We’ll be taking over Diss for the day again – with more than 1,000 cyclists this time.

“Rides will start and finish in the town and there will be lots of events on the park.

“We’ve also agreed outline plans with British Cycling to bring criterium cycle racing back to Diss for the first time since the 1980s, so it will be a great cycling day.”

RNA branch is thriving Even in deepest rural Suffolk you will find a naval presence.

The Stowmarket branch of the Royal Naval Association has celebrated the blessing of its standard, just four months after having been commissioned.

Conducting the blessing was Australian pastor George Samiec. In addition to his pastoral duties, he also serves as a police chaplain for Suffolk Constabulary and as the padre for a Sea Cadet unit in Mildenhall.

Stowmarket is the first RNA branch to

be commissioned in the East of England for 14 years, and has 20 shipmates on its watch and station Bill.

Remembrance Sunday will see members of the branch take their place in Stowmarket’s parade through the town, before attending a church service and paying their respects at the town’s Memorial Gates.

Legal challenge launched The Women Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) group continues to make gains in its efforts to make the Government think again about pension rights for women born in the 1950s.

The group has instructed Bindmans, a leading London law firm, to act on their behalf in a legal challenge.

Bindmans have achieved success in many equality and discrimination cases and also in representing the Equitable Life Pensioners.

To fund the challenge, WASPI will be opening a Crowdjustice page and many women have already committed to donate.

Fundraising director Jane Cowley said, “We are thrilled with the positive response from our supporters.

“It is a great shame that 1950s-born

women are having to dig into their pockets to fund a legal challenge to the maladministration and discrimination meted out to them by successive governments, but if that is the only way to get justice, that’s what we’ll do.”

Although WASPI agrees with the equalisation of men’s and women’s state pension ages, they are protesting about what they say is the unfair way the changes were implemented – with little/ no personal notice, faster than promised and with no time for those affect to make alternative plans.

Thank you for the piece you put in the latest edition of Take One, about the PAIN WASPI campaign for women’s pension rights.

TakeOne has been such a support and we really appreciate it.

We’re making good progress in Norfolk with our campaign, talking to each of the nine MPs one by one (and sometimes more than once) to give them the truth about what has happened to 1950s women.

I visited Richard Bacon

with three women who are all affected by the same pension age changes but each in their own unique way. One had 42 years of National Insurance contributions, looks after a disabled husband, and has power of attorney for her elderly father and special needs brother in Cornwall.

She deserves a pension.

We all deserve our pensions.

Tuck in to some spooky spider cakes for Halloween This recipe makes 12 spooky cakes, to be enjoyed by little kids and big kids too!

Ingredients 200g butter 200g sugar 200g self-raising flour 4 eggs Half tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla essence 6 tbsp of chocolate chips or chopped chocolate To decorate: 2 packs of liquorice catherine wheels 12 tbsp of Nutella or other chocolate spread Liquorice allsorts (the black ones with the white centre) Tube of black writing icing 1 length of red bootlace Method 1) Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4 and line a muffin tin with 12 cases.

Put the butter, sugar and flour in a mixing bowl.

Break the eggs into a smaller bowl, then tip on top of the butter mixture.

2) Add the baking powder and vanilla to the larger bowl, then beat with an electric hand whisk until smooth and creamy.

Stir in the chocolate drops or chocolate.

Recipe supplied by the Harleston Cake and Bake Brigade.

Spoon the cake mixture evenly into the cases and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden – a cocktail stick pushed into the middle of one of the cakes should come out clean. Cool on a wire rack.

3) To decorate the cakes, unravel the liquorice wheels and cut into lengths with scissors to make dangly legs.

Stick eight into the top of each cake, making small cuts with the tip of a sharp knife so they push in really securely.

4) Spoon the chocolate spread on top and spread lightly within the liquorice legs to make a round spider’s body.

Now cut the Allsorts to make eyes and the red bootlaces to make mouths, then stick them on to the cakes and dot on the icing to make eyeballs.

These will keep for up to two days in a cool place.

Foodbank is in need of support

S

towmarket’s foodbank needs your help The town’s chamber of commerce has always had a clear focus on the local area – not just Stowmarket but the surrounding towns and villages as well.

And for some time we have been all too well aware of the ‘pockets of poverty’ within that area.

The foodbank exists to help individuals and families in extreme circumstances needing temporary help, acting on referrals from local organisations including councils, the NHS, and charities such as Mencap and Victim Support.

In other words, these are people in very genuine need.

And no question of it, many families have been having a very hard time recently – so when we were made aware of

Stowmarket & District Chamber of Commerce has nominated the Stowmarket Foodbank as its designated charity for 2016-17.

With good reason, as chairman Allan Scott explains a major appeal by Stowmarket Foodbank, we decided to pay them a visit.

Even for a long-term supporter like me, it was an eye-opener.

For anyone thinking that foodbanks may not even be necessary, it would probably come as a shock.

A problem arose in June when they had to hand out a record-breaking 1.7 tonnes of emergency meal packages, feeding 57 families.

2016 they were giving out, on average, a tonne of food a month, so this sudden surge bit deep into their reserves.

It’s a tribute to their efficiency, their communication skills, and the level of their support that they met the demand without delay, and have been able to restock fully as well.

The food packages they assemble – and deliver, when necessary – are designed to provide good, nutritional meals for three to seven days.

They will also include essentials such as toilet paper

Call for advent help Waveney Foodbank has launched a Reverse Advent Calendar appeal ahead of the festive season when demand for their services will be at a high.

The foodbank, which covers from Diss along the Waveney Valley to Beccles, including Eye, Harleston, Stradbroke, Long Stratton and Bungay, gave out more than 200 hampers last year to help families struggling to feed themselves over Christmas.

They rely on donations to provide the service and this year’s appeal is based on the popular festive calendar.

But, instead of opening a window to discover a small gift each day in the run-up to Christmas, this one sees gifts added each day to the end of November, ready for distribution through December.

The Way Things were…

Traction engine reaches century in blaze of glory

H

ave Faith and the good Lord will deliver – even if you have a fireraiser on your hands.

That has certainly been the case for Natel Taylor and his traction engine, which has just passed its 100th birthday.

The Wallis and Steevens-built 11-ton engine left the factory in October 1916, built for a farm in Essex but commandeered by the Army for World War One service.

Natel, 82, of Barking, near Needham Market, has owned his traction engine since 1965.

He also has several vintage tractors but it is Faith, which is the centre of his life, having shown the remarkable engine across the region at rallies across East Anglia for 48 years.

And Natel has found out much about Faith’s history but is still striving to discover more about her wartime service.

“During the First World War, the army went into factories and commandeered any engine they wanted to go into munitions.

“Faith was built at Wallis & Steevens in Basingstoke and when we got her, my mum wrote to the factory and asked for the history.

“They said the engine had left the factory in 1916 for munitions work, pulling guns about, but we’ve never been able to find out where – it could have been anywhere in England or France.”

Faith still has her original registration number on the back – NO4710.

She was first registered for the

road in 1922 and when Natel bought her, the farmer gave him the original log book.

“I had to send it to Swansea to register the change of keeper but my mum asked if we could have it returned to us – they were kind enough to do that and I still have it, although it now has a red cross through it to say it’s been replaced.

“The engine first worked in Essex in Chappel – strangely enough, that was where I was born!

“When they finished with it, a Mr D’eath of Lavenham bought it and used it for agricultural thrashing corn and baling on contract work. It was run all over the region.

‘He sold it to us for £150 and we took it back to the farm. All the locals who saw it said it was just a heap of scrap iron’

“When Mr D’eath finished with it, it sat for 16 years at the side of the road, near a pond, rusting away.

“I found it in 1965 through Dad who was a farm manager. A rep asked him if he’d seen the engine in Bridge Road, at Lavenham and we went to have a look.

“The farmer asked what we wanted it for and I told him it was to restore it and run it at steam rallies but he said it was too far gone for that.

“Even so, he sold it to us for £150 and we took it back to the farm. All the locals who saw it said it was just a heap of scrap iron.”

Natel got up to work on his engine at 5am every morning before going to work and came back at 5pm to continue until it was fully restored.

He said: “I thought if I worked on it long enough and with all my heart, the good Lord would

help me. I had faith, and that is where the name came from.”

Faith was entered in the Woodton Steam Rally in 1968 and won the John Wilkins Cup for the best restored engine.

Natel Taylor’s hobby has dominated his life for 51 years.

“It has always been just a hobby but one I’ve put my whole life into. How I’ve managed to keep a job and wife I really don’t know!” joked Natel, who has had his wife Judy by his side at anything up to six rallies a year since first starting in 1968.

Natel enjoys hearing tales about Faith’s previous life.

“I keep getting old stories from people who recognise her from years ago.

“One chap asked if I’d got the original steering wheel for it.

“I thought it was a strange question but told him it had been missing.

“He then confessed that as a child he’d taken it off with his pals and thrown it in the nearby pond.

“We did ask if the farmer had ever found it but it must have rusted away.

“When it was used for contracting work, it went to a farm at Cockfield and the crew had two giant stacks to get through, near a big black barn.

“The farmer wanted it doing in a day but there must have been at least two days of work there.

“The engine driver was up to a challenge and put it into full steam but it was running too quick and when he opened the ash pan, it drew the flame out of the fire box up the chimney and on to the stack.

“They managed to get the engine off the belt and away but the stack and barn both burned down.”

University shows its wide range

hetford’s University of the Third Age lived up to its motto Learn, Laugh, Live, Enjoy when it staged a successful open day.

Members and non-members crowded the Carnegie and it was difficult for anyone to decide which stand to go for first.

A member of the art group gave a demonstration of oil painting, the cycling and science groups had teamed up to rig a bike with a dynamo and a bulb and it was indeed very hard work to pedal to get the bulb to light up.

The Spanish group and the

‘From sports to languages, travel, games, handicrafts, science, gardening, cookery, photography and more, there is something for everyone’s taste’ book club had plenty of books to browse through and the table tennis group had a mini net, ball and bats for visitors to try the game.

The mah-jong group gave a demonstration of the game and the music group played nearly non-stop for two hours bringing joy and nostalgia.

There was lots of laughter, talking, explaining and cups of tea all around.

Members of Breckland Flower and Garden Club enjoyed a demonstration of Seasonal Delights at their September meeting.

Joanne Randall created nine delightful floral arrangements, using foliage from her own garden and flowers she had sourced from her suppliers,.

A rather flamboyant pedestal arrangement caused a ripple of laughter when she realised the shocking bright pink carnations were actually dyed.

The trophy for best use of colour was awarded to Glynis Allin from the novice class.

Chairman Christine Hewson’s beautiful basket of home produce won the table show with Maxine Mace’s bowl of Victoria plums a close second!

The guest for October’s meeting at Old Buckenham Village Hall was Anne May, presenting a talk titled Fans n Tastics.

She gave an interesting talk on the history of fans through the ages. Her knowledge and presentation one might say was “fantastic”.

She showed a small selection of delicate fans from her vast collection of more than 100.

Winner of the Design to include a Fan competition was Jean Carnwell with entries from Christine Hewson (advance), Mary Loose, Linda Cambell, Maxine Mace, Jo Connelly and Jean Carnwell (novice).

Entries for the autumn colour three stems from the garden table show came from Maxine Mace, Christine Hewson, Jean Carnwell and Ursula Jackson.

The next meeting at Old Buckenham Village Hall is on November 10, 2pm, with a demonstration by Adele Kent on I’ve Got a little List. The competition is Autumn Glory.

Sheds are building social interaction for all Men’s Sheds are springing up across the region and, despite the name, they are open to both sexes.

The Men’s Shed movement was started in Australia and is a non-profit community-based organisations.

They operate to promote social interaction and aim to increase the quality of life.

Sheds already exist in Bacton, Bungay (Ditchingham), Diss, Halesworth, Thetford, Watton and Wymondham with a new one currently being built

in Stowmarket.

Stowmarket’s Meadlands Men’s Shed already has several women and young men among its members, who are busy fund-raising to get their plans off the ground Secretary Alan Page said: “We’re going to erect two 6x4 sheds and are building them from scratch.

“Volunteers are doing it all and raising money to get the materials we will need.

“Once it is built, we will need to stock it with the essentials

and are making picnic benches to sell to help raise money.”

Once complete, the shed will be open throughout the day and chairman Barry Salmon said: “We’ve got all the preparations done – the land (thanks to PPG), a committee in place, a Facebook page and website and bank account as well as a health and safety manual to meet the necessary legal requirements.

“A cabinet maker has agreed to come in once we’re open to teach the basics of his craft.”

Ready for seasons of change It’s time to get busy for a new year in the garden. GRAHAM PETTITT has lots of advice to make your jobs easier.

A

utumn has definitely arrived in the last few days, so now is the time to remove the summer bedding from the garden, if you haven’t done so already.

Pots and tubs that were planted up for summer have gone well past their best and need to be cleared out and replanted with winter/spring colour planting.

This can be done by under planting the containers with spring bulbs and planting winter patio plants on the top – winter flowering pansies or violas, polyanthus, heathers, skimmias, euonymus, heuchera, evergreen ferns and carex grasses, ajugas, small conifers and ivies.

Remember that the plants won’t grow too much over winter, so pack them in for a colourful display.

At this time of year, it’s useful to look back over the seasons and see what worked and what you need to improve.

It’s best to do this and have a plan for next year sooner rather than later. New season seeds are in the garden centres, so

get planning and buy the seeds early so you have them ready for an early start.

If you have a pond, an autumn job is to put netting over it. This will keep the leaves out of the water.

Leaves that fall in will turn the water murky and deplete oxygen levels as they rot down. This lack of oxygen can affect the health of fish and wildlife.

Before netting it over, hook out as much of the old foliage of pond plants as you can to prevent this rotting in the water.

With the wetter days coming in, another task is to clean and scrub the patio and paths of algae and moss to prevent them becoming slippery over winter or freezing and damaging the surface.

Any house plants or citrus plants that you put out for the summer need moving back indoors now so they don’t get caught by sudden low night temperatures.

However, if they are going into a conservatory or greenhouse, make sure it’s been cleaned before you bring the plants in.

Any last tomatoes in the greenhouse can be ripened by putting them with bananas or made into chutneys.

Don’t forget to put netting over your garden pond to stop autumn’s leaf fall depleting oxygen levels in the water

In Diss Garden Centre at the moment, the displays are full of bulbs, over winter onions and garlic. The onions and garlic can be planted in the vegetable garden as soon as possible as they need to get growth started before winter closes in.

Prices haven’t increased very much since last year so it’s best to buy these soon, before choices of the popular varieties start to get low.

Planting natural drifts of crocus and narcissi in a lawn means a burst of cheerful colour early in the year to push away the dullness of winter.

You can also plant them in the beds and borders but, if planting tulips, its best to plants them in baskets or big pots then plant these in the border so they can be lifted after flowering as they need renewing every year.

The lawn needs a feed of autumn feed, which is low nitrogen fertiliser, to strengthen the grass root system over winter, without lots of soft green top growth.

Lastly, remove or treat any perennial weeds with a glyphosate weed killer (Round-Up) before they die down and become invisible for winter.

A final thought: God made rainy days so that gardeners could get the housework done.

Cheer up the lawn with a drift of crocuses.

Ale and hearty brews Independent breweries are springing up across the country and Norfolk and Suffolk are lucky to have some of the finest.

Aleyard Brewery is based on a farm at Riddlesworth on the counties’ border between Diss and Thetford. It has a brewing capacity of 2.5 barrels (or 410 litres) and is in a building previously used for preparing herbs and making bread.

Brewer Graeme Reece said: “Production is geared towards bottle conditioned beers. This means that there is yeast in every bottle, naturally producing carbon dioxide. The yeast settles to form a sediment in the bottom of the bottle, unless you shake it up!

“All beers are given a minimum six-week, in-bottle conditioning

period, prior to sale.”

Aleyard beers contain only malted barley (some contain wheat), water, hops and yeast and there are no finings or chemicals added.

A wide range of products includes bitter, stout, porter and lager, with an ABV varying between 3.5% and 12%.

Current beers number 15, with another nine occasional or seasonal brews and five previous brews, which may return, according to Graeme, whose Christmas brew launches on November 16 and is a pale stout – 6.0% with cacao, mocha coffee and a hint of cinnamon.

Artist finds inspiration after a lengthy hiatus

t’s never too late to turn back the clock.

Derek Webb packed away his watercolour brushes almost 50 years ago and never gave them another thought until he was well into his retirement.

Derek was a talented artist but had to give up his art school place to start work and a hectic, but fulfilling career, combined with a passion for motor rallying, meant his old talent went forgotten However, the 76-year-old from Thompson, near Watton, is getting his eye back in as he rediscovers his artistic bent.

Derek is still heavily involved in rally driving but is enjoying the contrast of his two interests.

“Many people can’t believe how diverse my hobbies are,” he said. “I do it because I enjoy it; it’s not just about relaxing, I

need something to challenge me.

It’s less hard work than crawling under rally cars – besides, paint washes off much easier than engine oil!”

Derek had always enjoyed drawing as a child and won a competition in his final year.

“It was a piece that had to be done in one colour,” recalled Derek. “I chose blue and painted two palm trees with the horizon between them and a yacht off the beach, all in different shades.

“That inspired me and when I left school I wanted to get into commercial art advertising. I went to college in Hastings on day release. I’d never had a problem drawing but I found using colour difficult.

“Watercolour, especially, is a very difficult medium to work in

Derek has an unusual style, as he explained: “Lots of artists do colour washes or wet-to-wet, but I layer my work and it can look like an oil painting. I build them up and it’s quite a rare style; not very common at all.”

But Derek had to forego his college place because his father died. “Mum was finding running a guesthouse quite hard so I needed to get a job instead of

going to college so reluctantly packed in my art.

“I did a five-year apprenticeship in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning trade and then went into sales and never looked back.

“I had packed up painting in 1968, when my interest in rallying took off, so hadn’t given it any thought.”

Derek rekindled his passion for art in 2007 thanks to a family member. “My cousin inspired me

to pick up my brushes again,” he said. “He’s a professional miniature artist and insisted I should give art a go again.

“I was between rally cars and was retired from working so thought ‘why not’?

“The local church in Thompson put on an art festival so I entered a couple of pictures and I’ve been doing more ever since, although it has taken time to get back into it.

“It’s just a hobby but I would love for it to have been my profession all those years ago.

“I have no regrets though, because things turned out very well for me over the years.”

Derek is currently working on a variety of pieces, including a motoring scene and a copy of a little-known painting by Van Gogh.

“A lot of well-known masters used to copy other masters to get started and I did some copies of Monet and went to his house in France. His studio was just as he had left it.

“It was a great experience and I took a lot of photos and copied them.

“Van Gogh is another l like and I plan to visit his home. It’s on my wish list. I really like the impressionist period.”

A variety of Derek’s work adorns the family home and shows a wide range of subjects.

“I enjoy painting landscapes but portraits are difficult although I have started doing animals,” he said.

“This area is full of them – pigs, hares – I’ve done a harlequin hare as something different and it is really eyecatching.

“I’ve also painted a tortoise and a gorilla!”

“I’d love to do a really nice landscape from this area – there are lots of churches on the Broads – and the skies are so ‘big’.

Olympian values fall flat in Rio

T

he spectacle that was the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil was far from a glittering joy for the parents of judo player Colin Oates.

Howard and Denise Oates, from North Lopham, went to support their son at his second Olympic Games but returned far from impressed with the Rio festival of sport.

Howard, who is a judo coach and a former World Veterans competitor, and his wife made the 12,000-mile round trip to support their son in his bid for Olympic gold but were left feeling flat by the whole experience.

“The home crowd was particularly hostile,” said Howard. “The whole place was not what you expect of a modern country and not at all great for the Olympics.

“There was no help at all for visitors outside the immediate Olympics area and the majority of Brazilian people weren’t interested in the Games at all.”

“I’ve visited many places across the world through judo but this was the scariest – more so than places such as Ukraine, Turkey and Egypt.

“Brazil just wasn’t a place we could relax in. We were warned to remove our watches, rings and valuables before leaving the hotel. Outside was a very threatening atmosphere. We were told that if someone tried to snatch your phone to give

“It was certainly an experience. Very few people spoke English and the whole country was not geared for Western-style tourism.

would have eased all the bad things. As it was, he fought for about five minutes in total and the whole trip cost us £5,500, so that was about £1,000 per minute. Colin has cost us quite a few pennies over the years but that was the record!”

Howard’s attention now switches to book writing in support of his son’s World Championship ambitions.

Colin is 33 and unlikely to be still at the top of his game when the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo come round.

“He wants to win a world title before he retires but how far he can take that ambition will depend on the funding he receives from UK Sport,” said Howard.

“Our first book was just to subsidise Colin’s income but the new one is in case his funding is dropped because the UK Sport grant cycle is geared towards the Olympics cycle.

“If that goes, he will have to pay for all his own training, transport and medical things, The grant funding is worth £15,000.”

As well as the books, the pair are running a series of masterclasses, with all proceeds going to help Colin’s title ambition.

“Colin and I are working on other books to raise more funds.

He’s been doing judo since he was five and loves the sport.

“We’ve written 72,000 words so far for a biography to release when he eventually retires.”

The books are selling well in the UK and also the USA and the pair are planning a third in their series next, aimed at the elite players.

in life. “It was 36 years ago, when I was 27,” said Howard, who won the British Veterans Championship in 1994, 95, 96 and 99 and was 15th in the World Masters in 2002 in Luxemburg.

“I last fought aged 55 in the World Masters in 2008,” said Howard, who has been a coach since his children were small.

“The coaching came by accident really,” he explained.

“I packed it all in in 1982 but went back in 1989 when my sons started doing it.

“I felt I could teach them more than their coaches could and started the Kumo Judo Club in 1994 at Garboldisham Village Hall. In 2000 we started in the Lophams and then Diss.

“I’ve coached Colin to two Olympic Games and Jono Drane to the Paralympics.

“The club also had seven British champions, 60-70 junior

national medallists and five Commonwealth tournament medalists.

“The Olympics and Paralympics took paramount place but shouldn’t overshadow the other great achievements,” said a clearly proud Howard.

As for the future, he is confident he has an active production line of Olympicclass players coming through.

“The Monday evening class for serious players has nine who are looking promising,” said Howard, whose other three children, David, Vicky and Charlotte also enjoyed national and regional success in their younger days. l The Oates’ judo books are available from Amazon – Getting Started, £9.99, and Groundwork, £10.99.

ugar Ray Robinson was the main man in boxing throughout the 1940s and 50s and was a great fighter who was in every sense a true artist in the ring.

Few if any at the time looked capable of beating him.

So when England’s Randolph Turpin was given a shot at the world middleweight crown held

by Robinson he looked to have scant chance of victory.

This was no reflection on Turpin’s abilities. He too was a top class fighter who knew his craft but Robinson looked to be head and shoulders above him and the rest of the contenders in his weight division at that time.

On the night of July 10, 1951, Robinson, also a former world welterweight king, entered the ring at the Earls Court Arena in London with an outstanding

COLUMNIST: This Sporting Life

So, it’s autumn once more. A very pretty season, ’tis true, but as the air turns more chilly and the nights draw in, I find it harder to be enthusiastic about it all.

It is also harder to find the motivation, at times, to get outside or to the gym and to keep the fitness thing going.

Luckily for me, this autumn is about to be curtailed by a trip into a second spring as I am heading off to the southern hemisphere to take part in the World Masters Athletics Association Championships in Perth, Australia.

I don’t have any realistic hope of coming back with any medals, and , frankly, the prospect of a 20-something hour journey by plane doesn’t thrill me.

But I am grateful that I am in the position to have the choice of doing this sort of thing, both physically and financially (mentally is another thing altogether…).

If I don’t so it now, then when?

It’s one of those ‘carpe diem’ moments of which we often speak.

I recently lost a relatively recently found friend. She was only a year or

We are so often so busy stressing about the everyday challenges of life that we forget the solace there may be had in just spending a moment appreciating a glowing harvest moon or the skeletal silhouette of a tree against a darkening sky.

Of course, most of these experiences do require one to be outside to enjoy them.

We know from previous reading the benefits of simply being out of doors in natural light and fresh air.

Finding time to open the door and do that shouldn’t be too taxing for most of us.

Maybe a well known manufacturer and purveyor of sporting footwear had this in mind when it developed its modern version of the ‘carpe diem’ tag – Just Do It. Seize the day indeed!

Turpin gave of his best but surrendered the championship when the American stopped him in round 10 to regain the title.

Even so, Sugar Ray Robinson

was a true all-time great but a man whom Turpin had defeated when he was in his prime and not when he was past his best.

Few fighters can make that claim against Robinson.

Tom runs racquetball evenings every Tuesday, 7-9pm, and is on hand to offer advice and coaching. The cost is £3 per session and all ages and abilities are welcome.

Having run numerous marathons and other distance events, Tom is keen to promote the running groups offered at the Heywood.

In March he launched the Half Marathon Club or, as they have become known, The Heywood Halfers.

Thirteen people signed up for the 12-week course (some of whom had never run before) and, with the support and guidance of Tom and the rest of the group, each one of them completed the St Albans Half Marathon in June.

For beginners, there is also a ‘Couch to 5K’ running group and the well-established Heywood Joggers group, which is run by the experienced Richard Houston.

Richard has established a low-cost and safe environment for those aged over 18 who want to keep fit, lose weight or just tone up.

Individuals are able to walk, jog, run, or a combination of all three, around set routes, which will not exceed three miles in length.

Heywood Joggers running times are – Tuesday and Thursday: 6.30pm The Heywood is keen to get the younger members of the community involved in sport and organise a number of group tennis sessions.

Run under the watchful eye of head coach Lauren Larner, there are more than 220 kids in the sessions and afterschool clubs as well as school holiday camps that are run all year round.

For the younger squash players, there is junior squash morning, which runs every Saturday, 9.30 to 11.30am, for £3 per child (free to junior members).

From age six upwards, all abilities are welcome.

Diss enjoys half-century celebrations

iss and District indoor bowlers began a series of matches celebrating the 50th anniversary of their club with a win against a team from the English Indoor Bowling Association.

Bowlers from 10 English counties made up the EIBA team under national president Mike Andrew.

With a number of the visiting bowlers finding it difficult to adjust to the fast Diss green, the

home bowlers, captained by club president Wendy Penn, won by 50 shots.

After the match, the national president congratulated the club on reaching its golden jubilee.

“From the moment we arrived we were looked after so well all day,” he said. “You should be very proud of what you have achieved and the manner in which you present indoor bowls.”

“We could not have had a better start to the season,” said club secretary Martin Throssell.

“Norfolk won the exhibition match but the result was irrelevant. The game of bowls was the winner on the night.”

The bowlers who took part for Norfolk were Mervyn King, Carole Baker, Rebecca Field and John Ottaway.

Formerly trained by Barry Hills on the flat and Nicky Henderson over fences, the 14-yearold gelding gave a polished performance under threatening skies, demonstrating the depth of maturity that he has gained in the three years that Allister has had the ride.

“He’s a very intelligent horse, so therefore he’s always been very good to work with,” said Allister.

“He’s quite a character — he’s quite sharp, and sometimes he was unsure of what to do, but with a little gentle persuasion and

Jack the Giant is owned, unusually, by a syndicate. The Jackpots Syndicate was formed after Nicky Henderson’s partner Sophie Waddilove suggested to Allister that the horse might be successful in the show ring.

Now she and the six other owners — all of whom met at Pony Club in Newmarket — share in the spoils of Jack the Giant’s considerable success in the ring.

“It’s all worked really nicely for us, everyone’s had a really good time, and it’s given him a marvellous career after racing,” said Allister.

In his previous ‘career’, Jack The Giant completed 27 races, winning nine and gaining four seconds and three third places, picking up £193,656 in winnings and earnings of £223,055.

His win came at eight courses under jockeys including Mick Fitzgerald, Barry Geraghty, Tom Doyle and Willie Supple.

and State Crystal, a near-six year career ran from 2004 to 2010, when he bowed at Aintree.

The class was stewarded by David Ingle, Gary Morton, and Charles Wilkinson.

The SEIB Racehorse To Riding Horse Show Championship was created by SEIB Insurance Brokers to support and encourage the re-education of thoroughbreds taken out of racing, re-schooling them and preparing them for a new career in the show ring.

Check you’re feline fine How worried should you be about your pets bringing disease into your home? Rita Thompson, of Breckland Cats Protection, allays your concerns about cats and toxoplasmosis.

T

oxoplasmosis is a disease that can affect unborn babies, so many pregnant women are understandably concerned.

However, recent studies have shown that, contrary to some misguided beliefs, while cats are involved in part of the parasite’s life cycle, human contact with cats does not increase the risk of infection.

It is caused by a microscopic parasite called toxoplasma gondii but most cases of toxoplasmosis in people occur as a result of eating raw or undercooked, contaminated meat.

Fresh meat is more of a risk than frozen.

Eating cured, uncooked meats such as salami and Parma ham and unpasteurised goat’s milk and cheese may also be a source of infection.

It is estimated that only between 0.2 and 1.5 per cent of women become infected while pregnant and congenital toxoplasmosis – when the baby is born infected – is very rare, occurring in one in 100,000

babies born in the UK. There are a number of precautions that can be taken to reduce the risk of infection: • Wear gloves when handling raw meat, fruit and vegetables and wash hands afterwards • Cook all meat thoroughly to at least 70 degrees C for 15 minutes • Avoid consuming cured and raw meats or unpasteurised dairy products including goats milk and don’t feed your cat raw meat • Wash all fruit and vegetables thoroughly, including ready prepared salads to remove any traces of soil • Wash all utensils, chopping boards and surfaces with hot water and detergent after handling raw meat, fruit and vegetables • Get someone else to change your cat’s litter tray if you can’t wear gloves and wash your hands carefully afterwards • Change the cat litter tray daily as T.gondii, which causes toxoplasmosis, is

infectious between one and five days after the cat defecates • Keep outdoor sandpits covered to prevent cats soiling them • Wear gloves when gardening in case a cat has toileted there l The Breckland branch of Cats Protection is run by a team of volunteers whose aim is to protect and help cats in need and to reduce the population of cats by neutering.

Volunteer fosterers are used to look after the cats.

Once a cat comes into the care of Cats Protection, it is blood tested for feline aids and feline leukaemia, both of which are viruses in cats and easily spread by mating and cat fights.

Then they are checked by a vet, deflead, wormed, vaccinated, neutered if they are older than four months, and micro chipped.

Kittens also have all this treatment, but a neutering voucher (female £40 or male £25).

An adoption fee of £50 helps towards vet fees. Vouchers are offered to anyone on a income of less than £15,000 a year, which can be used at any vet.

Volunteers are always needed to foster, help with fund raising or helping out at monthly fairs in Thetford.

The human body truly is a fascinating piece of natural engineering.

Fascia, or connective tissue, forms a whole-body, continuous threedimensional matrix of structural support around our organs, muscles, joints, bones and nerve fibres.

This multi-directional, multidimensional arrangement also allows us to move in multiple directions.

Watch an athlete jump from a height, tumble and transition into a run. How do their joints not explode on impact from the fall?

Forces from muscles during activity are transmitted and dispersed within the body, primarily via the fascial network.

Fascia helps prevent or minimise localised stress in a particular muscle, joint or bone, and it helps harness momentum created from the operating forces mainly through

its viscoelastic properties.

Bone remodels itself depending on our weight bearing activities, likewise, fascia, will remodel itself (becoming stiffer and denser) along lines of stress.

Practice a movement repetitively and soft tissue will remodel itself so that the tissue becomes stronger at dealing with the forces in that particular direction.

Repetition can make fascia stiffer along the line of stress, but weaker in other directions, resulting in a possible higher frequency of fascial tears, or immobility in the surrounding joints when moving in different directions.

The same can be said of repetitive non-movement, such as sitting for long periods across days, months and years.

The fascial matrix helps us react to our environment faster than the conscious mind can respond, like retracting a hand from a hot stove.

Fascia is always under tension as long as gravity is present. This passive pretension has been called human resting

The reason I ask is that I might as well have a cheap cardboard coffin if it’s going to get burned. It seems such a waste to spend a lot on a fancy coffin if it’s just going to go up in smoke!

Well Frank this is an easy one to answer.

You will definitely be cremated in your own coffin, this has to be done as a suitable coffin has to be used for health and safety reasons.

It doesn’t matter what kind of coffin you have as long as it complies to regulations set out by the Cremation Authority.

Coffins can be made from cardboard, willow, or an easily combustible timber construction, these may be veneered thereby they look just like solid wood but are much more sensible both in cost and their impact on the environment.

With regard to the cost of coffins, they don’t have to be expensive.

These days there are many to choose from, ranging from very simple to totally personalised print designs and elaborate caskets.

The important thing to remember is that this is all about personal choice and what you feel is right for you.

You would be surprised how many times people have informed us that when their time comes, they want to go “in a bin bag or a cardboard box”.

Well, there is such a thing as a cardboard coffin and the people who have requested these from us are usually also keen to have a ‘green funeral’.

A green funeral is a term that often means the funeral will not follow a traditional theme.

This could mean that the funeral would be held in an unusual place, such as a woodland burial ground. The coffin would be made of a material other than wood, for example, willow, or as already mentioned cardboard.

These and other considerations towards protecting the environment would be some of the steps used when carrying out a green funeral.

The only difference is that there would be no coffin present at the church as the School of Anatomy would need to take you into their care quite quickly.

It would mean that friends and family would still be able to pay their respects to you and that you would be able to have a Christian funeral as you would wish.

We would suggest writing down your wishes for the service, to include readings, music and anything else you may like to happen. My own mother wanted the bells to be rung as she left the church.

This way, those left behind will know that they have carried things out as you would have wished.

A woodland burial site can be a beautiful natural place to be laid to rest, and there are more and more sites opening up.

However, as they are often privately run, they can vary significantly in the rules they apply and what they offer.

Some sites are already established woods and others resemble ‘fields’ where a tree is planted following the burial.

The temperature is definitely a lot cooler than the last few months, so most of us will be putting on our heater and lighting the fire.

Throughout the summer months, our skin has been dehydrated due to sun exposure.

As the colder months approach our skin will be getting dryer and dryer due to the central heating that has been put on.

Our skincare routine needs to change with the seasons and, although it is cooler and there is less sun around, we still need to make sure our daily moisturiser contains a Sun Protection Factor (SPF).

At this time of year, a

Moisturisers should state if they contain a SPF and what level.

For most of them it will be 15-20.

Night time is the best time to really give our skin a treat.

These need to be patted into the skin.

There are so many on the market to choose from.

There are a couple of ways to get around this problem. In both cases you will have to know your email user name and password.

Your username is your full email address and

your password will be the one you chose when you originally set up your account.

If you have changed this at any time you will need the most recent password that you have used.

Firstly, your accounts can still be accessed via webmail. To do this start your internet browser and enter www.outlook.com in the address bar at the top of the page.

This will take you to the Outlook webmail home page. Here you can enter your user name and password to access your email account.

Unfortunately, unless you used to download your email using the IMAP protocol you will not be able to access your previously sent emails and any folders that you might have set up will no longer be available.

The other way to get your email back up and running is by switching to

a different email program.

Until recently you could use a client called Thunderbird, which was developed by the Mozilla group, the same people that developed the popular internet browser Firefox.

This, however, is no longer supported for security updates so should no longer be considered.

There is however a very good alternative in the shape of eM Client and it is free for non-commercial users.

To obtain this visit the eM Client website at www. emclient.com The first thing to do is hover your cursor over the ‘Pricing’ tab at the top of the page and then click on the ‘Get Free Licence’ link in the drop down menu.

Fill in your details, agree to the terms and conditions and then click on the second ‘Get Free Licence’ link.

Next, download the software and follow the

installation instructions.

Once installed you will be able to chose a theme, Modern, Classic or Dark. If in any doubt chose Classic.

The next screen to open will be the ‘New Account’ page. You will be given the option of where you want to import your existing email from.

Click on the ‘Windows Live Mail’ icon and all of your email and contacts, etc, will be imported.

Once finished, you may be asked for your email password and, if so, simply type this into the box that opens.

Singer proves dreams come true – it just takes hard toil Lesley Garrett loves getting intimate with her audience and is heading to Suffolk to bring the tale of her remarkable life.

She tells TakeOne editor Steve Penny how she is simply following her dream

lobal singing star Lesley Garrett is feeling flattered – she’s been invited back to East Anglia to have a chat about her life story.

Despite being feted across the world and having played to audiences numbering tens of thousands, the classical and opera singer is happiest in the intimate surroundings of stages where she can interact with her audience.

November 9 and the chatty Yorkshire-born singer finds it hard to believe how popular the format has been.

“We began the show last year and it proved so successful we were asked to do another tour, which was very flattering.

“We came to Norwich last time and this time the Bury St Edmunds theatre was very keen to have me. I was very involved with fundraising events for the lovely old Georgian theatre and love to see it still going.

“Bury is a lovely place and again it was flattering that they asked me to come.”

As for what the audience can expect, Lesley admits she’s is in the dark of much of it, due to it’s loose-linked format.

“The show is always developing and I never quite know what to expect.

“There is a lot of interaction between the audience and me and they get a real buzz from it.

“I start by telling the story of my life; how I came to be a singer. It’s a real ‘rags to riches’ story – an ambition fulfilled and a tribute to all the many friends that have helped me along the way.

“I also get to sing a bit – music that has meant something to me – it’s all very varied, just like my life!”

“People have even ended up on stage with me and I give them an impromptu singing lesson!” said Lesley.

“It’s all about lots of chat, lots of music and lots of fun and laughter.

“I never worry about what might happen or what might be asked – I’ve got nothing to hide!”

Lesley’s story is indeed the stuff of fairy tales, although the tale of her parents also defies belief.

“My father served his National Service and came out to work as a baker’s boy.

East Anglia holds fond Lesley Garrett is a frequent visitor to East Anglia in the little spare time she gets.

“I love Norfolk and Suffolk and try to get around there when I get the chance,” she said.

“My husband Peter was born and bred in Spalding and went for childhood holidays to the North Norfolk coast.

“I did a show at Cromer Pier last year for a Radio Four programme with

Richard Coles – someone I’ve known since my student days.

“Peter and I spent the weekend there so visited Holt, Sheringham, the lovely beach at Holkham and had a drive round the Sandringham estate – I want to go back there for a proper look round.”

But Lesley was not enamoured with all parts of Norfolk and said: “I must admit I wasn’t too impressed with

Lesley Garrett is a country girl at heart and has remained close to her Yorkshire roots. She also enjoys visiting the Norfolk and Suffolk coasts.

He became a master baker and then a railway signalman because that was a good solid job to bring up a family on., “When my sister and I came along, he realised how much he enjoyed teaching– he was great at it – especially nature and music and there was lots of both around where we lived near Doncaster.

“He was very resourceful; both him and my mother were.

They were the first in our family to own their own house.

“I was born in a council house but we moved to a condemned two-up, two-down cottage at the side of the river.

“My dad learned all the trades he needed to do it up on his way home from work, just by speaking to the tradesmen he met.”

But her dad, Derek, wasn’t finished there. He then set his mind on becoming a teacher.

“He’d left school with no qualifications so did his

swotting in his signalbox to get the qualifications he needed,” explained Lesley. “He went on to become a head teacher and my mam wasn’t far behind. She became head of music at the school.

Lesley originally wanted to be a folk singer, like her favourite Joan Baez.

‘That focussed my own mind. If they could do what they had done, why couldn’t I become an opera singer?’

And it is that focus that has stood Lesley, now 61, in good stead throughout her career.

“I was so passionate about it and couldn’t wait to get on the stage and perform.

“Both my parents had lovely voices. My dad was the local Pavaroti and mam was a

soprano chorister in both the Doncaster and Scunthorpe Choral Societies.

“My grandad was a classical pianist and band leader so there was a ton of music in my genes.”

Lesley was into many genres of music and her career could have taken a completely different path.

“I was into all kinds, not just classical. I went to a very musical school – classical music was every bit as popular as pop music – there was no big divide.

“Originally I wanted to be a folk singer. Joan Baez was my favourite and then I moved on to Simon and Garfunkel and then Cy Grant.

“I loved how folk music developed – it’s similar to opera in many ways. It’s so strong and robust. It can’t be damaged by having people pull it apart and try different things with it.”

Part of Lesley’s appeal is her down-to-earth approach to life and willingness to chat to all and sundry.

“Yes, I’m very gregarious and just love talking to people – that’s why I love this show so much,” she said.

‘Music is a magical thing and being able to bring it to people has a real effect on you too’ “I’ve always been very vocal – talking as well as singing – and that has stood me in good stead.”

Lesley is keen to continue to spread that world and insists singing is good for your health.

“Anyone can sing. It’s all about breathing well and is wonderfully restorative.

“Music is a magical thing and being able to bring it to people has a real effect on you too.

“Hearing a song can transport you to a place in the past and can be a real geography lesson.

It’s good for our souls too.”

Despite being acknowledged as one of the world’s most gifted singers, Lesley still trains her voice regularly.

“I have singing lessons every week and work with Joy Mammen – an old friend who was actually my professor at the Royal Academy of Music 40 years ago.

“Everyone needs an honest critique because you never really know how your voice

And the science of the voice is something that Lesley has enjoyed getting to explore.

“I always enjoyed science at school so when the BBC asked me to be part of the Soundwaves programme for BBC4, I leaped at the chance.

“I went into an MRI scanner and all the mysteries of how your voice works were shown.

“It really was fascinating to see what is inside and what it actually does.”

No screening date has been released by the BBC for the series yet.

Lesley still has to pinch herself to realise how far her career has taken her from her early days near Doncaster.

“I’ve been to some wonderful places I wouldn’t expect to visit thanks to my singing career.

“I’ve sung the Australian and English national anthems at Trent Bridge for the Ashes test and sang Abide With Me at the last FA Cup final at Wembley before it was redeveloped, and then at the first one after it reopened.

“The chance to then sing the national anthem to celebrate Bradley Wiggins’ win at the Tour de France was incredible but so surreal.

“I was flown to Paris in an old crop spraying aircraft. It was a terrifying flight and I threw up all the way.

“I just got there in time to quickly get changed and struggled on to a tiny platform in front of the presentation in the Champs Elyses.”

Lesley loves her sport and is proud to have been named as president of the Lady Taverners cricketing charity.

“It a long way from my first experience of cricket,” she recalled.

“My grandad and father played village cricket and Mam was the scorer.

“It was my job to rush around the boundary asking the fielders for names so that Mam could enter them correctly in the scorebook.” l An Audience with Lesley Garrett runs for more than 30 dates across the country until April 2017. Festival headliners hit Diss

he nights may be drawing in and the air getting chillier with memories of summer starting to fade but, with the festive season approaching, there is so much to look forward to in Thetford.

Thetford Town Council has four events to stir the festive spirit so get the dates in your diaries and dig out your winter woollies.

Festive events start with the seasonal favourite A Christmas Carol in the Carnegie on Thursday, November 24. Tickets and information are available from www.leapinghare.org The following evening (November 25) brings the town lights switch-on event in King Street Square.

There will be a funfair on the market place, stalls in King Street, a Christmas gifts and craft fair in the Guildhall and a Christmas carol concert in the Carnegie, along with a Santa’s grotto and reindeer at the front of King’s House.

The gifts and craft fair continues on Saturday with an even greater choice to help fill those Christmas stockings, in both the Guildhall and the Carnegie, 10am-3pm.
