Infertility: A Public Health Issue

By Ayanda Nxonga

hormonal problem that may lead to inability to get your spouse pregnant.

Inability to conceive within 12 months stands as a definition for infertility. Couples that have been trying to fall pregnant for over this period of time should urgently go for checkups and tests.

2. Sperm concentration, 20 ml of sperm per 1ml of semen is the

Most people will eventually have a strong desire to start a family at some point in their lives so it is important to have a clear understanding of what infertility is and also what to do and how to go about it.

3. Sperm mobility or motility, the normal mobility should be about 50%, anything lesser than that can cause no pregnancy if you don’t undergo therapy. And lastly;

As such, studies show that 85% of couples achieve pregnancy within a space a space of one year with a greatest likelihood of conception occurring within earlier months, maybe getting false pregnancy symptoms or signs. However, there is an additional 7% of the remaining 15% of couples will conceive in the second year. Then the rest are usually diagnosed with infertility.

4. Shape, this is known as morphology, where they check the shape of

At this – it is imperative for these couples to seek help and meet with a reproductive endocrinologist. If of course the conception hasn’t taken place within the space of 12 months. There are various cases and events that can lead to infertility, these include the irregular egg ovulation, history STI that may have damaged your fallopian tube and of course the age of the female partner, these play a role among many other causes and you are recommended to see a doctor for help and advice or prescriptions. The normal ovulation of the egg happens two weeks before the monthly periods. Now irregular cycle of periods may indicate that you don’t ovulate predictably and chances are that you may not happen to ovulate at all. You need to ovulate frequently and normally, the normal period cycle is between 25 – 35 days. The ovulation of the egg is important to pregnancy, if your ovulation is not frequent or normal, you run a low to nothing risk of getting pregnant. You need to see your doctor, more especially if you are planning on building a family of your own flesh and blood. Women that are 35 years and older are required to go for check up if they have been trying to have a baby for over six months. Study shows that the number of eggs decrease as aging occurs, that means the older you get – the fewer the eggs you have. The quality of the eggs depreciates as your age appreciates, as well as its normal genetic ability to reproduce. So you are recommended to check up with your doctor if you are 35 years and older. Causes don’t only lie on the ladies side only, men also have their contribution, a couple may not be able to have a baby because of the male partner’s health issues, or genetic problems. Males can have irregularities in their semen, so they have to get analysed and tested as well. Firstly the doctor will test and check your 1. normal concentration level, anything lower than that puts you at a low risk of impregnating your partner if you do not go for treatment.

your semen. They check the semen’s head, middle piece and the tail. If any abnormalities are detected in these regions that means your sperm will be ineffective in fertilizing an egg without therapy. STDs and STIs can cause inflammation and permanent scarring of the fallopian tubes, and this may hinder the movement of sperms. Semen needs to wonder through the fallopian tube in search of eggs to fertilize; now if the fallopian tube is inflated or scarred, this hinders the sperm. So if you have any history of STIs or STDs like Chlamydia or gonorrhoea, you need to get tested to see if your fallopian tubes are open. Abnormalities in the uterus lining cause a lower rate of implantation and pregnancy. These abnormalities can also cause bleedings in between menstrual cycles. You should go for evaluation if you have been trying to have a baby for six months. Women with a history of bleeding or uterine abnormalities should undergo evaluation when they plan on starting a family. An evaluation is done through hysteroscopy method, where the doctor is able to correct the irregularities in the uterine cavity by surgically placing in it, a narrow scope with a camera on it, so he can correct or remove anatomic abnormalities. When going through fertility evaluation, your physician will start off by asking you many questions as an investigation for your medical history. You will be asked questions like; how long have you been trying to get pregnant? How often do you have sex? Have you ever been pregnant before? O you have pains during menstruation or during sex? And many other questions in those lines. An ultrasound is then used in evaluating the structure of the tubes, uterus and ovaries. Ultrasound can detect abnormalities like fibroids, polyps and distal fallopian tube occlusion including any ovarian abnormalities and ovarian cysts. It also performs the follicle count, which is determining the number of eggs. Moving on to the lab, your physician may request your blood for testing. These blood tests usually include the testing of how much of certain hormones you have in your blood. Hormones like estradiol and FSH which are related to ovarian function and the follicle number. Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) is a test used in evaluating the fallopian tube for polyps, fibroids and so on. With this testing, some abnormalities in the uterus can be corrected or removed.

By Nompumelelo Sharyn Masinga

A

frican prints or traditional wear as we know has evolved, as the fabric is used in our everyday attire, not only for events but for everyday clothing. With all the new designs coming-out we are also able to chic it up to fit our style. Thuli Makofane the founder and owner of the STREET CORNER ACEDEMY in Kwa-Thema, Springs, started her sewing company back in 2016, but her love for sketching and African prints began when she was in Primary school. “I believe African prints are rich in culture and leaves a statement that say, I’m here and I am proud of my heritage”. She does not only design traditional clothing but other street wear styles as well. She mentions the importance of using authentic and strong fabrics. The quantity of the fabric will enable your outfit to last longer and not easily damage when being washed or ironed.

“Our African prints have diverse and significant meanings behind the prints, some belong to different tribes that are found in Africa and because Africa is such a diverse continent, we have so many prints to choose from mainly in SA, which makes our traditional wear even more refined”. Thuli however, uses shwe-shwe with a touch of western textile in most of her designs this gives it her own signature look. “I love sewing and it makes it even more worth it when I see the smile from my clients faces when they receive their final product”.

Whether it’s for a party, a wedding or going out with some friends Thuli adds that the size of your attire and how it fits you is important, ensure that is not too loose on your body but also not too tight either, this is so you are able to move without tearing the stiches. “When I’m in my studio I’m in my zone. This is where all my creative juices come out, I’m able to take what my client at the time like or wants and create something modern and stylish to suit their style”.

Thuli Makofane (32 Years Of Age) Owner And Founder Of: Street Corner Academy.

TIPS ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR THAT PERFECT AFRICAN CHIC

7

SIZE AND FIT Go for the perfect size when you choose your attire, a perfect size though, is not too tight and not too big. Make sure that your attire fits to well enough to complement your body frame but not too tight that if exposes even those unwanted extra bits.

COLOUR AND STYLE The colour of your fabric will depend on the print and fabric you pick out, yet the style has to be appropriate for the occasion, so go for the style or design that will not restrict you to wear it at different occasions, after all who said we can’t repeat the same outfit twice?

BEADWORK CHOICE We all like the extra beads in our outfits, these complete the entire outfit. Don’t be shy to add as much beads as you like but remember that different coloured beads have different meanings. Black beads positively are a symbol of marriage or rebirth but negatively can also imply death or sadness. White beads symbolize spiritual love and purity. Green beads positively symbolize contentment and negatively imply discord or illness. Yellow beads, can imply wealth and red beads symbolize love and negatively also symbolizes heartache.

All my life I lived to ask just this one question; what is freedom? All my life I hear my people chant, freedom this, freedom that. Freedom, freedom cut these chains loose. Twenty-five years of Democracy’s life, yet still I stand tall and ask; what is freedom? Freedom is the power to do:

What you want When you want Where you want Why and how you want.

That is not the case. We move on a fast pace. It’s more of a race. Yet, we going nowhere, we out of place. Dreams come slow or nothing at all. The rich continue to get rich while the poor get poorer. Is this the freedom my people? The freedom to utilise drugs, nicotine, and

alcohol, with no place to call home. The freedom to use drugs, nicotine, and alcohol, in a world women fear walking these streets alone. The freedom to habit drugs, nicotine, and alcohol, burning libraries and schools. Is this the act of being cool? I do not mean to be rude, For justice sake, I just cannot adjust, I cannot understand. Help me overstand so I can innerstand. My people, is this freedom? Are we free? Are we verily free, or is it just to adjust to the act of being dom? Onalenna Shaka
