MIND A BLACK WO “Waseella Patel who is a friend of mine, we met late last year. She was selling makeup and I got interested and bought one of her lipsticks. She got to tell me about her makeup skills and I got inspired and was like you know what, if she can do it, why can’t I?” Bridgette Hlengiwe Masuku shares a story of how she got in the makeup industry.

OMAN IN BUSINESS The aspiring artist with ambitious dreams was bred in Soweto Protea South but was born in Mpumalanga. Her inspiring story of middle class upbringing to being able, or as another person would put it, having the audacity to dream big just brings levels to the bases. Hlengiwe Masuku grew up as a quiet and collected kid, whom however was a top model behind closed doors and in front of her mirror. Just like most of township girls, she went to a township school in Soweto – Protea South Primary and Altmont Technical High School – which are both in Protea South. She is now doing her Diploma in Journalism at Rosebank College. “I see myself as one of the most achieved makeup artists, working with runway models, actors and actresses. I’d also love to own a beauty bar specialising in makeup, artificial nails and also full body massages.” Hlengiwe tells us about her goals in an interview. Meeting with people in the same

industry is crucial, she explains. Working with people’s skins is not an afternoon breeze, you need to acquire skills and at the same time, be as creative as you can – for competition is extreme. You have to acquaint yourself with new people and learn as much as possible from them. However, Hlengiwe says that she has never had anyone to teach her, she relied on Youtube to learn, and if you were to check out her work, you’d be astonished. “No one sat next to me and taught me makeup. Whatever I know I learnt on Youtube using myself as a doll to work on.” She says. Hlengiwe admits that she is not a qualified makeup artist, but confidently suggests that her work is amazing. She however aims to go study makeup. She wishes to study injury and false scars makeup as these are seemingly interesting, exciting and challenging to her. She still maintains her dream of opening a beauty bar specialising in makeup, artificial nails and also full body massages.

7

WHAT GIGS HAVE YOU DONE, AND WHAT YOU HAVE YOU LEARNED? Her aunt’s wedding was just last year and she came to rescue the make-up scene as there was no make-up artists. This was actually her first gig, she put make up on the bride and bridesmaids all by herself. “I prefer working alone because my aim is to attain perfection. Most people like working for money, not what they are supposed to do.” She says. She however wants to have employees one day – but she says she will be very choosy at delegating to jobs. She says that she will be taking jobs that are more pressing and sensitive. And she will be delegating simple jobs like nails and massages. Makeup is a delicate job as you ware working with delicate skin. Hlengiwe doesn’t like changing people through, makeup, or hiding their natural look. She rather believe that makeup was meant to enhance a girl’s beauty, instead of hide it.

8

IT’S SUMMER, WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR MAKEUP USERS? “Use waterproof makeup, I once bought a piece of makeup without looking at the name of the brand and without checking if it was waterproof, and when I applied setting spray, my makeup started flowing down my face” she says laughing. It is important to use waterproof makeup to avoid it melting down when you either sweat or get poured with water, or whatever the case may be. She rather that you use less makeup, less colours, and less colours, your colour make up must reflect that it is summer, and so it must be light in colour, to reflect the sun and not absorb heat. irl’s beauty, instead of hide it.

NFD WONDERKID Amongst top performers so far this season in the National first division is Nkosinathi Onyedikatchi Ononogbu, who turns out for Limpopo side TTM FC. The speedy Ivory Park born winger has also netted four goals thus far, Nkosinathi took time to chat to Auzweke’s Gift Tlou about his football career and goals.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND WELCOME TO AUZWEKE (ONLINE) MAGAZINE Nkosinathi: Thank you for having me.

What really motivated me is that there’s no one from my township who turned out professionally so that pushes me to work even harder.

HAVE YOU TRIED OUT ANY OTHER SPORTING CODES? Yes I did long jump and athletics back

TELL US A LITTLE BIT in high school. I did very well but football was just my number one ABOUT YOUR passion. BACKROUND? IS THERE ANYONE IN YOUR FAMILY Okay I’m from Ivory Park in Midrand. I stayed with my mother and my WHO PLAYED niece, my mom raised me very well and I’m very grateful for the support FOOTBALL MAYBE? she’s given me in my journey. We are Christians at home and that’s what has kept me grounded.

My grandfather used to play for Mbabane swallows. My elder brother Mxolisi Sigwane also turned out for Swallows and Highlanders in Swaziland

TELL US THE JOURNEY YOU’VE TRAVELLED SO FAR TO GET WHERE YOU ARE? I’ve always played football especially around my township Ivory Park. I played for a team called Thlalefang when I was about 17, then I got a call to come join Mamelodi Sundowns, their MDC side but things didn’t go according to plan and I had to return to my old team Thlalefang Fc. From there onwards in the following year I joined stars of Africa in 2016, then a year later my professional career took off when I joined Baberwa Fc in the Abc Motsepe league.

WHAT KIND OF PLAYER ARE YOU? I’m a Midfielder but I can play striker as well, I’ve got speed, skill and Stamina. I read the game very well especially the defender I’m up against normally it’s the left back since I play winger. So first few minutes I’ll asses all that, then I’ll know which technique I must apply to overcome my opponent.

HOW DID YOUR MOVE TO TSHAKHUMA TSHA MADZIVHANDILA FC COME ABOUT?

TTM scouted me while I was playing for Baberwa in the Gauteng Abc Motsepe league. They invited me for trials in June just before the National first division started. I attended, did well, passed my trial and the rest is history.

YOUR ONLY 20 HOW DO YOU REMAIN GROUNDED? I think it’s the way I was raised and the influence my mother had on me. Also the people around me and most importantly I take my football career very serious.

WHAT HELPED YOU ADJUST SO QUICK TO THE NFD? I’d say the type of play here is not that different from the way I was playing in the Abc and what was expected.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST GAME IN THE NFD? We were playing against Uthongathi in Durban, I was very scared! I didn’t want to make any mistake. I was substituted in the 78th minute and we played to a goalless draw with them.

WORKING WITH WHAT CAN YOU COACH SELLO SINGLE OUT AS A CHALLENGE DO YOU CHOKOE? FACE IN THE NFD Working with coach Sello has been a pleasure so far and a good learning MAYBE? experience for my footballing career. This league is very tough. HOW IS IT

14

My day depends on the schedule of the day and what time is training. I normally make sure that I get to the gym 30 minutes before we begin

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGEST ACHIEVMENT SO FAR? Scoring my first goal in the NFD against Real kings so far that was my highlight. I also managed to score a brace against Mbombela Fc which was something I’d never forget.

WHO DO YOU LOOK escape and maybe take a walk. UP TO AS YOUR WHAT GOALS HAVE SOURCE OF YOU SET YOURSELF INSPIRATION? WITH YOUR Teko Modise FOOTBALL CAREER? WHICH FOOTBALL TEAM DO YOU SUPPORT? Chelsea and Barcelona

IS THERE ANY RITUAL YOU PERFORM BEFORE A FOOTBALL MATCH?

We definetly want to win promotion to the Psl this season and for me I’d like to represent the national team and go on to play at the highest level ANY MESSAGE TO YOUR FANS? ARE WE REALLY A BLESSERS AN

The topic of the current generation being lost is so overated...yet a question still stands...are we really lost or are we just taking the bait from the previous generation? Sanibonani zi Girls and you also Gents it’s a happy 3 years anniversary to us Auzweke! In the dictionary a blessing is described as God’s favour and protection while in religion a blessing is defined as an infusion of something with holiness, spirit full redemption or devine will, well in our case we are talking of young women dating older married rich guys ingakho we say blessers and blessees akere. The phenomenon of older men dating younger women is nothing new...even in the olden days men were known to always go for the younger girls...manje sdukuduku these relationships are given new names (blessers & blessees/sugar babied) and people now want to start catching feelings. So let us answer the underlined question...are we really a lost generation or are we just taking off from where the previous generation left off? The correct answer would be..no we are not lost and certainly nothing is new about what we are doing,a lot of things that are happening in our lives have long been happening with the people before us,the only difference is that our generation is exposing all of them with our new technology,Social media and the power of freedom of speech...we are a generation of expression no doubt there!

16

GENERATION OF ND BLESSEES? A lot of people would argue that this is a more sophisticated or rather up market way of prostitution and others go as far as labeling these young women slay queens or sugar babies and so forth but question is why has this stigma only being attached to women when there are also guys who are in these things..but that’s a story for another day akere! The problem is not in our generation at all but it lies in how society paints a picture of how girls are supposed to be at the mercy of older man and young girls actually falling in to the trap..oh well who an I to judge? I’m just a writer. The first thing that comes to women’s minds when they think of older men dating younger women is that men might only be interested in perpetuating the illusion of their own youth ,for some this ought be true..yet it can also be found that the attraction is a little more complicated than that. Thank you for reading yet another wonderful and useful piece of ask!Girls only on your Vip pass to the backstage. ...I am Auzwekes first lady and I say have a beautiful festive season and remember to always be safe! Health Implications of CBD on Fizzy Drinks (Speculations of Coca-Cola being interested in adding cannabis – weed – on their products have been raised – but let’s look at the health implications of this action) South Africa has now joined in to become one of the world’s heavy weight, meaning that our country has a lot of overweight people. Studies show that 1 233 adults in North West province showed that intake of sugary drinks has doubled from 2005 to 2010. Health issues have then been up to a peak – issues of inflammation, pain and cramping. However, CBD (cannabidiol) has properties that can ease these ailments. Iol.co.za reports that only one can of fizzy drink contains roughly 600 kilojoules of energy, which is 7% of typical daily energy requirements. This may sound like a small contribution, but it’s a 7% you don’t need. 600 kilojoules is the amount of extra energy you need to be moderately active for 30 minutes. Gabriel Eksteen, Nutrition Science Programme manager as the Heart and Stroke Foundation (HSFSA). Says, “Our bodies don’t compensate well for sugary drinks, which means it does not satisfy our hunger, and we don’t adjust the rest of our food intake downwards. If your body stores 600 kilojoules every day, you will gain 6kg of weight in one year” Studies also show that intake of at least one soft drink a day, runs you a high risk of experiencing cardiovascular events metabolic syndrome in your middle ages. For this reason. Firstly sugar taxes were introduced to reduce consumption of sugary drinks to improve health. Also the decriminalisation of marijuana got soft drinks companies eyeing the introduction of cannabis

18

to their products. “Coca-Cola says it’s monitoring the nascent industry and is interested in drinks infused with CBD — the non-psychoactive ingredient in marijuana that treats pain but doesn’t get you high. The Atlanta-based soft drinks maker is in talks with Canadian marijuana producer Aurora Cannabis to develop the beverages, according to a report from BNN Bloomberg Television.” This report is according to Jen Skerritt and Craig Giammona. 2018. Coca-Cola Is Eyeing a Possible Entry Into the Cannabis Market. TIME, 4 October 2018. There are two main compounds in the marijuana plant, CBD and THC. CBD is the compound that has most healing properties, while THC also has healing properties and is responsible for the high – and that is why it will not be involved in the Cold Drinks. Since fizzy drinks cause inflammations, when CBD is added to the products, it will help reduce or eliminate the pain. • First of all, inflammatory is a natural body defence, the body releases white blood cells if it recognises a damaged area in the body. The white blood cells go to that area to protect the damaged area. This process is called acute inflammation and it is vital in the body’s Immune system. This inflammation can however stay longer than necessary, and this can become hindrance. So people tend to turn to anti-inflammatory medication such as Aspirin, Grandpa and the like.

But these are only momentarily effective. Studies show that cannabis is the viable way to treat inflammation, and in the long term. CBD and THC are the most important compounds of the plant. They can help in a way that they interact with the endocannabinoid system which, according to a review published in Pharmacological Research, can help regulate the immune system. According to some uncompleted studies, it is said that CBD can actually heal a person from drug addiction – it’s awkward that a drug component can help relieve drug addiction – however, Dr Esther Blessing, a psychiatrist and researcher at New York University. Explains this brain teasing phenomenon, she says that even though CBD is extracted from a drug plant, it does not lead to alter perception and cognition. CBD is non-psychoactive but it possibly has medicinal effects to your brain. • CBD can help relieve stress. We face a lot of pressure on our daily lives as we strive to find balance in our lives. While we are trying to balance work with family lives, there is also relationships, bills and you also need time for yourself. This is undoubtedly stressing. A lot of people in the US have already resorted to using CBD to help relieve from stress. CBD is considered a serotonin receptor subtype. Anxiety and stress may be healed by some prescribed pharmaceutical drugs, but they are not as effective. What CBD does is, it block the serotonin to be reabsorbed in the brain, so it causes the synaptic space to be occupied by serotonin making the brain cells have enough access to serotonin – which improves moods and reduces anxiety. So basically, serotonin is an anxiety and mood regulator.

cient traditions like, Africa, Asia and some parts of Europe. It has been used to help with epilepsy attacks and stress relieve, commonly in the Jamaican society. CBD can also be used to help manage your weight. In a published study in the scientific journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry explained. CBD can stimulate genes and proteins that will breakdown fats in the body and also oxidization of fats. It has also been found to Increase the number and activity of mitochondria (which increases the body’s ability to burn calories) as well as to decrease the expression of proteins involved in lipogenesis (fat cell generation), this study was also from scientific journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. So basically CBD has the ability to convert “white-coloured fat tissues” which store up energy, and change it to “beige-coloured tissue” that burns energy instead of store it. • With people who have been diagnosed with cancer and are going through chemotherapy, CBD has been found to be an agent of help according to a report by American Cancer Society. Though it hasn’t been proven that CBD can cure cancer, it can however be helpful in treating nausea and vomiting from chemo. Studies show that smoking or inhaled of marijuana can help in slowing down cancer cells and killing neuropathic pain, pain that has been caused by damaged cells. It can also help with food intake for patients with HIV.

Although CBD in itself does not create serotonin, it helps regulate it and bring it to equilibrium naturally, and therefore our brain and body can access it and use it effectively.

According to the American Cancer Society, “There have been some early clinical trials of cannabinoids in treating cancer in humans and more studies are planned. While the studies so far have shown that cannabinoids can be safe in treating cancer, they do not show that they help control or cure the disease.” Some studies show that THC and CBD can actually kill some of cancer cells or slow their rate of growth on lab dishes.

• CBD has always been used in an-

AUZWEKE #Ask How

How to Save a

Saving money whilst you have to pay bills seems like a problem to many young South Africans. But it is not necessarily impossible. All you have to do is set up your priorities, set goals and make sure you reward yourself after a harsh financial month. Whether you are working in a low paying job, a high paying job, or you are a student – it is essential to save money and be on your way to financial freedom. Here is how:

Identify and set up priorities It is important to firstly identify your already existing priority bills and meet them before you even start planning your financial month. Identify that you have must pay accounts or debts like, your car, house, school fees, debts, tithe, grocery and this list for some may include black tax. • Before planning on going out with your friends or having a nice treat like many tend to do on their payday, make sure you actually make payments, not set aside in your mind. Pay your debts, pay school fees if you have that responsibility. Pay your tithe and the like. • However in the first place, make sure to avoid debts. If you however find yourself in a situation where taking up a loan is unavoidable, make sure to accumulate enough money to make as big a down payment as possible. This will help in reducing the interest you’ll have to pay back, and you will finish paying off the loan in less time than was initially. • Take out a calculator and compute how much your priorities are. Take this money into their respective accounts and start planning on other goals you have set

20

for yourself.

Surround yourself with company fit for your budget This is especially important for young working lads. You may be in your twenties and all you want to do is have fun at the end of the month, or every weekend, this is not really a bad thing, but only if you have a good financial plan. As much as relationships are very costly, friendships are no different. • Your squad may be bad for your finances, you may have friends that are always on the road and having drinks, if you feel that your wallet doesn’t fit well, do not hesitate to limit your time with them, or even leave them for good, to be with friends that are less on the spending side. Staying at home is not really a bad thing, it is actually rewarding and you can make a lot of self-discovery while sitting on the couch with people you love the most. This gains you reliability and trust. • Consider carrying a lunch box to work or campus, when your colleagues are ordering food, even if you can afford it at the moment, consider carrying a lunch box and see how much you will save every week.

and PAYBILLS Pay your taxes This may be a daunting thought for many workers, but have you heard of tax refunds? I’m sure you have. One of my lecturers came to class happy one of these days, the smile on his face was due to a tax refund that was up to about R 20 000, believe it or not. When you have been paying tax for the longest time, or even a year with consistency, you may receive a tax refund due to withholding calculations and the earned income tax credit. Because withholding is calculated on an annualized basis. This little money may lend you an unexpected help in time of need.

Set reasonable long term goals, and strive to attain them You have surely heard of short, medium and long term goals. Your long term goal may be buying a car, a house or retiring, these goals are tough to attain and they may take decades but they are in fact attainable. There are a few ways to attain these goals if your budget is too tight, you may start considering saving into a retirement account, this may be long overdue and hard to imagine etirement while you are still young, but the earlier the better. • Also consider stock markets, but it is important to keep in mind that the money you put in the stock market has the potential to be lost for good – especially if you don’t know what you are doing. So what you need to do is get extra cash that

is floating around and invest with that one. • Get knowledge of how stocks work, before investing in them, you can search out the future of the market or get someone with this knowledge to do it for you, but they come at a price. However this may be helpful. Stock markets can be used for our advantage, if you haven’t, start considering it and start learning them. You can get an app to learn how to gamble with stocks, these are demo apps that actually work like real markets.

Start cutting your unessential expenses This is a great way to financial freedom and less stress. It may be unimaginable for you to live without a vrrpha or a cable TV subscription. But you will find it a lot easy to survive without them once you have eliminated them from your life. Consider the car insurance money, consider the maintenance and all unnecessary costs that come with unnecessary luxuries, these can how ever be obtained later in life. Learn to be farsighted, if tomorrow can come, next year will come and so is five years. However it is important to reward yourself as a person, after every successful financial month, go out and have some fun, repay yourself for your achievements. By: Ayanda Nxonga

AUZWEKE Poem

Tell Your Mother I Am Sorry

22

Tell your mother I am sorry, I am sorry I never, Made it on time for dinner. Tell your mother I am sorry I could never cook beef stew, Like she ever did for you. Tell her I am sorry I could never every night fix you a hot plate, As I will be working late. Tell your mother I am sorry I could never look after you Like she did when you were like a baby. Tell your mother I am sorry, I am sorry that you are the one who cheated And I am the one that seemed lost and crazy. Tell her I am sorry I lost a part of me, Because you never kept your end of the deal. Tell her I am the one that could not sleep, The pain was too deep, I lost weight and could not eat. Tell her that’s when I lost a part of me to never be. Like Lil Wayne’s three peat, A piece of me that could never repeat. Tell your mother I am sorry everything turned to be a wrong turn. And we had to let it burn. Tell your mother I am sorry I never lied when I said I love you. Tell her not to worry, you will never go hungry, for you there is plenty to marry. Tell your mother I am sorry for you and I no more Tom and Jerry. We’ve invented a game to play forget, Like we never met.
