From one phase of education to another

Not all of us are open to the idea of change, but for scholars; change is something they constantly have to deal with, without even making the choice to. With moving from one phase of education to another, a scholar has no choice but to adapt to the circumstances they are faced with. to high school was exciting the first time she heard that she was promoted to the next grade. However it all came crushing down when she could not adjust socially at the new environment, coming from a background where she would normally make friends easy, high school did not make it easy for her. Although she is trying to adapt daily to the new teachers, school and friends, she says she will never undermine going to a new stage of life again. She promises to be open minded about change as she would soon transition to tertiary level.

By Masego Diale According to an article by Education Review Office, a student’s transition can be complicated by the social, emotional and physiological changes that can negatively impact on their learning. Speaking to a first time high school learner, Kedibone Makwela who schools at Holele High School in Ga-rankuwa, the above statement was proven to be absolutely true. Makwela expresses that; moving from primary

that you visit the premise first as a parent to get a better look and as well as to make sure that environment is healthy. After this visit, tell your children about the premise and how the school does not seem bad at all. This will make them warm up to the idea of moving to a new environment. Another thing is to ask them about their social life and how it is improving, make sure that you are the friend that they might find difficult making at school.

When coming to the tertiary level side of things, nerves seem to have calmed as there is more excitement then fear of the unknown. A first time student at the University of Johannesburg, Tshepo Mokgoko says that he is ready for this new chapter of life and cannot wait to finally be Talking to more primary to high school independent of his parents. transtainers, Rebaone Tlhapi a scholar at Mokgoko says he has been excited from the Setlalentoa Secondary School in the same area says, “While moving to a new school, try to be moment he received his acceptance email till to open minded and expect everything new. No one this day where lectures are going to commence in a few days. is going to greet you, therefore be comfortable with the idea of making new friends.” To all first timers, either you are starting a new On a study done by Oxford University, these school, grade or going to tertiary; Auzweke would like to wish you a happy transitioning are ways to make your teenager or young adult better adapt to a new study environment; ensure season!

QUEENING THROUGH TRIALS

By Florah Matsile

A “Queen” is defined as a female ruler of an independent state, especially one that attains this position by birth right. Often when we hear of a queen we picture royalty, but Jabulile Primrose Zulu like many other young black girls of our beautiful Mzansi are doing great in these tough industries; being great examples to the young and the old, is giving us a whole new concept of ‘queen’ through INDLOVUKAZI. The word ‘Indlovukazi’ is a powerful IsiZulu word meaning Queen, and in this context, the 26 year old Jabu says she felt very confident when she came up with this name for her massive foundation, INDLOVUKAZI. “Being a Zulu queen myself, giving this beautiful-meaningful- uplifting initiative this name was rather fair. The feeling of seeing myself as a queen is very warm and I believe each and every female should feel it” says Jabu. This is an initiative aimed at empowering the Women, because all success begins with us. An empowered woman empowers the next woman and before you know it everyone is empowered. We all know the challenges of growing up in townships, very limited opportunities, a lot of stereotypes polluting the atmosphere and the society controlling our lives, one could only imagine how truly challenging starting something like this could have been. For someone who had very little knowledge about what she was doing in the beginning, the work she’s done is amazing. “ Yoh! I was very nervous when I started this because I had such little knowledge about youth development; my desire for wanting to learn even grew bigger. I know that change had to begin with me and everyone around me”. As a young resident of her hood ‘Mohlakeng’, Jabu says that it was only responsible of her to do something about the social ills Mohlakeng is undergoing. She says that identifying a problem is one thing, doing something about the problem is the biggest challenge in most townships. “I realised that to bring about change someone has to take the initiative to make an effort”. Indlovukazi is a platform for young girls to freely express themselves and be the best version of who they are. The foundation is receiving a positive response from the community and

everyone is on their toes offering their utmost support. Indlovukazi had its first seminar in 2018 at Rooftop Junction to educate women on entrepreneurship, registering companies and surviving the business world. “hosting my very first seminar for the first time was very stressful as I knew very little about sponsors nor where to even start looking. I had to make ends meet and fund the event myself. The planning and organising was a challenge too as my job demanded a lot of my time, so mogirl had to level up and press on.” The event was a success and got her a lot of exposure and grew the project massively. She told the us that her first event brought a lot of opportunities her way as well as a great engagement with the youth of Mohlakeng. She says that herself and the team are currently working on the second seminar for April 2019 and hopefully they will keep doing this every year from now on to grow and develop each other. This year’s target will be young girls from different high schools in Mohlakeng. “I will be working with Diale funeral parlour, Rooftop Junction again, and Khaya Engineering for this year’s seminar. It is so refreshing seeing how the people of my hood are willing to be a part of this, the support is really amazing”. There’s going to be an introduction of movements like ‘Adopt a girl child’ everyone invited to the seminar will select at least two girls to mentor and assist with their school work. Movements like ‘Help a queen glow’ that will be assisting young girls who cannot afford to pay for their matric dance. This is all to boost a young black girl’s confidence and to help keep her in school!. Entrance to the seminar will be a donation of toiletories from any brand that is going to be given to girls from underpriviledged homes. Indlovukazi is not only for the women, according to what Jabu told the magazine, programmes regarding men, substance abuse, crime and a whole lot of demons upon our township and our country as a whole are still to be brought forward to educate more people about them because the only way to find solutions for them is to get people talking about them. “If we are knowledgeable, its easy to find solutions to problems as a unity. Umuntu ngu muntu nga bantu!” –Jabu. Great work will foerever be celebrated, although some people get uncomfortable by it, we advise everyone to stop at nothing!.

BE CAREFUL, MOSQUITOES ARE FATAL

Do you often feel itchy when you wake up or while asleep? We may all know that the culprits here are mosquitoes. But these are not to be taken lightly as mosquitoes are one of the deadliest insects on earth. They are agents of spreading malaria, yellow fever, Zika virus which has an effect on pregnant women, putting their unborn babies at risk. Half of the world’s population live in areas that are exposed to these kind of conditions where malaria spread by mosquitoes is common and deadly. Even though it is said that people living in those areas can grow immune to the virus, and not leading to death, this statistic is alerting and health organisations have been in distress. Sub-Saharan Africa carries a rather higher share of the global malaria burden, spanning at 88% of 90% cases reported globally. According to the report on World Health Organisation (WHO). There are simple ways to avoid mosquitoe bites rather than running a risk of being infected and getting healed, you run a risk of losing your life. Vaccinations are available to sustain you for a life time. They will make you immune to these diseases for an epoch of time. Studies show that tourists and people who are always on the road are more vulnerable to being infected by mosquitoe-borne diseases. There is however injections that travellers take before leaving their country to a country that has experienced an outbreaks in these diseases. Get vaccinated, it is your right. You can also make use of nets around your bed when you are asleep. Also make use of window screens, open your curtains but keep your windows

closed as much as possible. Malaria and yellow fever are the common diseases in South Africa while Zika is mostly found overseas like Latin America, Asia and so on. This doesn’t mean it is not in Africa at all, it is just rare.

Malaria Malaria is the most common mosquito-borne disease all around the world. With death tolls ranking very high in insect deaths. According to a report by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the female Anopheles transmits malaria parasites; P.falciparum is the most prevalent parasite in Africa and is responsible for most malaria deaths globally. The female anopheles mosquitoe is an efficient vector that likes tropical, rural, and urban conditions. Anopheles that carry P.vivax are found mostly outside Africa.” These mosquitoes bite mostly at night; the common victims of these bites are pregnant women and children. This is especially for those living in places where these mosquitoes are mostly found, in places with humid temperatures.

SYMPTOMS

According to WHO, in some people, symptoms may appear after 7 days of the bite or even more. The symptoms are headaches, fever, chills and vomiting. An infection of this disease may prove fatal if not treated early. With these kinds of symptoms, it’s almost hard to recognise that you have been infected with malaria. So if you suspect any of these kinds. Better get yourself checked before the disease gets severe. Infants and children under the age of 5 are at high risk including pregnant women.

People with HIV/AIDS as well as tourists or people who are always travelling are also extremely vulnerable to this disease.

There are however ways to prevent malaria, there are antimalarial medicine that will help in just doing that. Travellers can also prevent contacting it in places that they wish to visit. This is through chemoprophylaxis. It is however said for those people living in places that are high in malaria break, that they have grown partially immunity to prevent it from getting severe – talk about the survival of the fittest. A human body has properties to adapt to situations, environment and evidently diseases and viruses.

Yellow Fever Unlike the female anopheles that bites in the night, the ‘female’ Aedes bites during the day. Transmitting a parasite that gets you Yellow Fever. The cycle however starts from monkeys to humans. The mosquitoe firstly bites monkeys and then the disease to humans and then from human to human. Research shows that it is found in Africa, Latin America, jungles and other places with humid temperatures. In their reports, “In May 2016 a WHO Emergency Committee called for intensified national action and international support for yellow fever outbreaks in Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

SYMPTOMS Yellow fever carries with it a rather harsh list of symptoms which include, fever, muscle pains, backache, headache, shivers, and loss of appetite, nausea or even vomiting. There is also according to WHO, a second stage which gets even intense, fortunately only a small amount of people enter this second stage. They may experience high fever, jaundice and abdominal pain with vomiting. These symptoms can cause your kidneys to fail; you may find blood in your vomit and also on your faeces. People who enter this stage are likely to die, and people who recover from it can come out without any significant organ damages. It can be hard according to research, to diagnose yellow fever as it may be confused with severe malaria, West Nile virus and Zika – as well as poisoning. There are however ways to prevent this disease. Vaccination is available for humans. As single vaccination can make you immune to yellow fever for the rest of your life. However, One fifth of a regular dose may be used in emergencies and is found viable to sustain you for only 12 months. Be sure also avoid mosquitoe bites by covering yourself or your loved ones with a net, use window screens and also wear clothes that cover your exposed skin when you are in places with yellow fever outbreaks.
