Pentecost 23

8 November 2020

 Pentecost 22  Sunday 8 November 2020 Remembrance Sunday Worship Leaders: Pamela and Rev Mervyn Dine Organist: Norman Firth Welcome and explanation about the service. Leader:

We gather here to celebrate, to seek the truth, to grow in love, to join in service. We gather here inspired by life's beauty yet seeking to find healing for its pain, to honour our kinship with each other and with the earth; and to create a more compassionate world, beginning with ourselves.

People: We gather here to wonder at the mystery that gave us birth; to find courage for the journey; and to listen for the wisdom that guides us in the quietness of this moment. (Gary Kowalski) Hymn

O God our help …..

O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home:

Beneath the shadow of your throne your people lived secure; sufficient is your arm alone, and our defence is sure. Before the hills in order stood, or earth from darkness came, from everlasting you are God, to endless years the same. A thousand ages in your sight are like an evening gone; short is the watch that ends the night, before the rising sun. Time, like an ever-rolling stream, will bear us all away; we pass forgotten, as a dream dies with the dawning day. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come: be our defence while life shall last, and our eternal home! Prayer Lord’s Prayer Time for all ages‌‌.

Reflection Hymn:

Teach me to love you ‌..

Teach me to love you with all my heart, Reshape my life to your design, To serve with open and willing hands, Allow your light to freely shine. Teach me to love you with all my soul; Forgiven, may I now forgive, Released from ev' ry resentful thought, With fresh compassion learn to live.

Teach me to love you with all my mind And not to shrink from honest doubt, Explore and probe with integrity, To search for truth, then live it out. Teach me to love you with all my strength, Attentive to my neighbour's need, Reflect your self-giving love for me; Then shall your will be done indeed. Joy Dine (1937-2001) (Please remain standing for the dedication of the offering)

Offertory Prayer (together) Loving God, you surround us with your endless love, peace and forgiveness. Receive and bless these gifts. We offer them and our lives in your name to be used to proclaim your love, peace and forgiveness to all people. Amen Prayers for others and for ourselves Leader: People:

Compassionate God In your love, hear our prayer.

Church family Hymn:

Dear God Creator of us all

Dear God Creator of us all forgive our foolish ways: reclothe us in our rightful mind; in purer lives your service find, in deeper reverence praise, in deeper reverence praise. In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord — let us, like them, obey his word: 'Rise up and follow me, rise up and follow me!' O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, when Jesus shared on bended knee the silence of eternity interpreted by love, interpreted by love! With that deep hush subduing all our words and works that drown the tender whisper of your call, as noiseless let your blessing fall as fell your manna down, as fell your manna down. Drop your still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of your peace, the beauty of your peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire your coolness and your balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire, speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm, O still small voice of calm! J. G. Whittier (1807-1892) in this version Jubilate Hymns Commissioning Leader:

All:

Go in peace, love and care for one another in the name of Christ. May you be blessed by God's continual presence. May your path each day be lit by God's indwelling Spirit. May joy, love and wisdom of the Risen and living Christ fill your hearts. Amen

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen.

there's something different about this show. It's not that the theatre is part of Pitt St Methodist Church or that it is three short plays about people connecting somehow during lockdown. It's not that it's patriotic or funny or poignant. Not about the team of five million - or that it is written by one person and directed by two - or that it Is based on the words of the greatest Prime Minister New Zealand has ever had.

The difference is - it's my last. This is goodbye. I thank you all. God Bless, it's been quite a journey, many parts of which we have been there together kia pai Ĺ? koutou ora, Geoff Allen, Galatea Theatre
