TAI PING HERITAGE

The Birth of a Brand

In 1955, the then British colony of Hong Kong was experiencing one of the largest increases in population ever witnessed anywhere. In the 10 years following the Second World War, Hong Kong’s population had grown from less than half a million to 2.5 million. It was apparent that Hong Kong must change from a trading port into a manufacturing base for the city to thrive.

In early 1956, a group of friends came together to join the newly incorporated ‘Hong Kong Carpet Manufacturing Ltd’ (the holding company of the

‘Tai Ping’ brand) with the idea that making carpets could help provide much-needed employment for the colony’s burgeoning population.

Sympathetic to the plight of the newly arrived refugees, the founders believed they could provide employment while developing a high-quality export business. With sights set on the American market, the company chose the auspicious brand name ‘Tai Ping’ (meaning Peace) to appeal to overseas admirers of Oriental artistry.

The Story of the Tent

In 1958, Tai Ping was commissioned to make a very large carpet to be installed in the world’s most famous cinema: Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

With limited space to make their largest order ever, workers created a temporary workshop in an adjacent lot under a tent that had been acquired from a bankrupt circus.

When the carpet was almost finished, a designer visiting from the US inspected and approved it before rushing off to the airport to catch the last plane before the almighty Typhoon Ida struck Hong Kong. As the intensity of the storm increased, wind strength doubled and the tent collapsed. The entire carpet was almost ruined, but the workers were able to support it on trestles above the soaked ground and work on the last finishing touches from underneath. Workers braved the typhoon to secure the tent until the storm passed.

The carpet was saved and delivered on schedule with much acclaim. In 2004, the Tai Ping logo was redesigned to incorporate the tent as a symbol of the company’s resilience and its commitment to customer service.

XIAMEN ARTISAN WORKSHOP

Designed by Paris-based Sandrolini Architecte – the architecture firm behind many luxury industrial buildings including the Louis Vuitton factories in Venice and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape winery in Courthezon, France – Tai Ping’s Xiamen Artisan Workshop celebrates the heritage and workmanship that have allowed the brand to establish itself as the preeminent manufacturer of handmade carpets since 1956.

In designing this creative centre where products of haute couture take shape, employee comfort, environmental sustainability and a link between the inside and outside were of high priority. With these objectives in mind, the entire workshop was planned around a central garden – a peaceful place representing the heart of the project. Floor-toceiling glass surrounding the central garden turns the workshop into a window display of creativity and craftsmanship.

To provide optimum working conditions such as temperature control, outdoor views and a pleasant overall environment, the sophisticated structure was designed to combine performance and humanity in order to facilitate optimal comfort as well as promote innovation and creativity.

Tai Ping enthusiastically opens its doors to guests and clients from around the world who share the company’s appreciation for innovation and employee care.

A 20th-century design icon, Edward Fields is a legendary name in the history of the hand-tufted rug. In addition to such groundbreaking inventions as the area rug and notable collaborations with the biggest names in mid-century design, Fields elevated carpeting to a status he termed “art for the floor”.

Today, Edward Fields Carpet Makers carries on the modernist legacy of its founder, with finely crafted bespoke creations that build on an archive of over eight decades of tailored vintage designs.
