COMPANY MILESTONES
1956 – 1960
Tai Ping, meaning ‘Peace’, was founded in 1956 by seven Hong Kong businessmen led by brothers Lawrence and Horace Kadoorie, to provide employment for migrant artisans.
A commission from the world famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles in 1958 is so large the carpet needed to be constructed in a tent erected outside the workshop. Typhoon Ida swept through Hong Kong and the legend of the Tai Ping Tent Story was born.
A five-storey factory in Tai Po, Hong Kong opened in 1958.
1976 – 1980
Tai Ping established a showroom at 9 rue Maître Albert Paris in 1978.
Tai Ping Industrial Park at Tai Po was completed in 1979, housing all Hong Kong carpet production.
Anthony Yeh developed the handtufting gun, drastically increasing carpet production speed and marking a turning point for the company and the industry.
1961 – 1965
Tai Po factory expanded to 60,000 sqm increasing production capacity to 12,000 sqm per month. Described as ‘The finest factory for hand-made carpets in the world’, 15,000 stock colours were held and 30 new colours were blended each day.
1966 – 1970
Overseas fairs and exhibitions expanded Tai Ping’s profile around the world.
1971 – 1975
Her Majesty the Queen commissioned carpet for the Throne Room, Buckingham Palace.
1981 – 1985
6,800 sqm of hand-tufted carpets, Tai Ping’s largest ever shipment delivered to the new Riyadh International Airport Mosque.
Tai Ping replicated a 110-yearold Beauvais carpet for the White Drawing Room in Windsor Castle.
Tai Ping’s Singapore factory gifts
Her Majesty the Queen a carpet as the official gift from the Singapore government on her forthcoming visit to Singapore.
1973
Tai Ping listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
1982
New Paris showroom opened at 30 rue des Saints Pères.
1985
New London showroom opened at 17 Savile Row.
1986 –
1990
Tai Ping awarded US$1.3 million contract for the Kuwait Conference Centre, the largest single order to date.
1991 – 1995
1992 Tai Ping opened Nanhai factory in Guangdong, Southern China. All operations transferred from Tai Po.
2001 – 2006
Journalist and publisher Tyler Brûlé creates a new visual ‘Tent’ identity for the brand.
2011 – 2015
Largest order of hand-tufted carpets in the world was awarded to Tai Ping for the Emiri Terminal of Doha, Qatar: 3,300 sqm.
Tai Ping awarded contract for Yacht ‘White Pearl’, the longest and largest sailing yacht ever built with 1,900 sqm of hand-tufted carpets.
1996
2000
Tai Ping provided the red carpet for Hong Kong’s sovereignty handover ceremony.
2006
2010
Tai Ping awarded the Marina Bay Sands project in Singapore. The single largest contract ever awarded to a carpet manufacturer totalling 220,000 sqm of carpets.
Tai Ping achieved ISO quality & environmental standards, and was recognised as an accredited supplier by the International Maritime Organisation in 2000.
Tai Ping became a preferred vendor of Marriott Hotels in 2006, and Chanel in 2008.
Tai Ping awarded NSF 140 Silver Standard and began manufacturing unique wool carpet tiles with recycled backing for premium contract projects.
La Manufacture Cogolin, the leading French producer of hand-woven Jacquard carpets, was purchased by Tai Ping.
