Taipei AMPA Keeps Growing!

Taipei AMPA 2021 broke through the pandemic, managing to increase its show scale. This bodes well for the 2022 show, which is expected to be an even bigger attendance draw.

Multiple product categories will be display at Taipei AMPA 2022, the majority of which will focus on auto parts, diagnostics/maintenance tools and customizing products — all of which reflect the main exports from Taiwan’s auto parts industry. 2022 Show Highlights

AMPA 2022 to Debut ‘AMPA DigitalGo’ Concept

T

he 2022 Taipei International Automobile & Motorcycle Parts & Accessories Show (AMPA) organizers have announced that the event will take place from April 20-23 at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Hall 1 in Taipei, Taiwan, with an online show — called AMPA DigitalGo — that will run from April 11-24 on www.ampaonline.com. tw. AMPA 2022 includes both Taipei AMPA and the Taipei International Automobile Electronics show (Autotronics Taipei).

Manufacturers of automotive parts and accessories, car lighting, electric vehicle (EV) and Internet of Vehicle (IoV) peripherals are all signed up for the 2022 Taipei AMPA hybrid show.

The global automotive aftermarket was expected to reach $390 billion USD in 2021, and the industrial output in Taiwan also experienced a 5% annual increase, noted Taipei AMPA senior manager Sinny Chang. “We can see there is still a high demand from the industry,” she said.

Each year, AMPA attracts high-quality custom, aftermarket and original equipment (OE) automotive parts manufacturers. In fact, given the Taiwanese information and communications technology (ICT) industry’s strong research and development abilities, you will also find suppliers of products for Tesla, Rivian, Lucid and Fisker here.

AMPA DIGITALGO: THE DEALMAKER ONLINE SHOW Since AMPA launched an online version in 2021, it has become the first international automotive trade fair for which both physical and virtual shows are conducted. As mentioned earlier, for 2022, Taipei AMPA offers an innovative concept of the online show: 2022 AMPA DigitalGo. AMPA DigitalGo is a platform that not only connects exhibitors and buyers, but effectively extends the recognition of companies’ brands into the marketplace. Taipei AMPA Insights: A Bullish Outlook on the Retail Aftermarket for 2022 However, there are mixed signals on the economic landscape.

M

ajor changes in consumer behavior have resulted from the pandemic, which have benefited the automotive aftermarket in many countries throughout the world.

In the U.S., for example, Nathan Shipley, executive director and industry analyst for The NPD Group, notes that the aftermarket gained nearly 4 million new retail buyers in 2020.

“That’s a big number,” Shipley said. “Those are folks who had not bought anything on the DIY [doit-yourself] side of the aftermarket prior to 2020, and all of a sudden magically appeared and were engaged with us as an industry.”

For this reason, the automotive aftermarket supply chain has become more important than ever, and the 2022 Taipei AMPA show provides the perfect opportunity for companies from around the globe to meet and partner with some of the world’s leading auto parts manufacturers.

But, what were the reasons for this change in behavior, and are they expected to continue?

Looking back, the “whys” behind the boom in DIY sales — at least, from an American perspective — have become crystal clear: more time at home;

a windfall of discretionary cash from stimulus checks, child-tax credits and (for some) extended unemployment benefits; an aversion to airplanes and public transportation; and cabin fever, which drove sales of RVs and boats to record levels.

As Shipley discussed the NPD Group’s 2022 outlook for front-room retails sales in the automotive aftermarket, he noted a number of “mixed signals” on the horizon. On the positive side, the job market remains strong in the aftermath of the 2020 recession; COVID-inspired activities, such as camping, boating and road trips, are showing no signs of slowing down, and the new- and used-car marketplace is pushing consumers to keep their older vehicles on the road longer than planned.

“There are more cars on the road now than ever,” Shipley added. “Scrappage rates are down. VIO [vehicles in operation] is up. The average [vehicle] age is trending older because of what’s happening with new cars. Those are all nice tailwinds for the aftermarket.”

However, there are a number of pandemic-era tailwinds that could become headwinds for the aftermarket in 2022 — notably the absence of

The 2022 forecast anticipates that aftermarket retail sales will be 8.5% higher than they were in 2019. stimulus payments and the expiration of eviction moratoriums, expanded unemployment benefits and student-loan forbearance. Shipley believes that many consumers likely will be surprised by a smaller-than-usual tax refund, because “they just don’t understand the mechanics” of the child-taxcredit payments that showed up in consumers’ bank accounts in 2021.

And while Shipley said he expects miles driven to return to 2019 levels this year, rising gasoline prices remain the ultimate wild card [especially considering the uncertain impacts of various economic and geopolitical issues in the world at press time].

“We can go back years … and there’s a direct correlation between gasoline prices and miles driven, notably when we get to gasoline-price thresholds of $3.50 a gallon, $4 a gallon,” Shipley added. “That’s when we start to really see — at least historically — major behavior changes as it relates to driving. So this has crept back into the conversation.”

NPD’s data modeling for 2022 calls for U.S. aftermarket retail sales to pull back 5.7% from 2021 — a year in which sales were up nearly 8% compared to 2020. However, the 2022 forecast anticipates

that aftermarket retail sales will be 8.5% higher than they were in 2019.

“This is a bullish forecast,” Shipley said. “This is suggesting that 2021 was the peak and things are going to keep trucking right along,” assuming there are no new sales-triggering events, such as additional stimulus packages.

He added, “I think the big takeaway is that the fundamentals of this industry are very, very strong.

We should feel very, very good about where we’re at as an industry. But overall, we expect things to settle in just below where they were in 2021.”

Building off the success of the past few years, companies at this year’s Taipei AMPA, will be showing off their aftermarket products for markets around the globe.

A few examples include: Hardrace with its suspension and chassis kits; Nan Hoang Traffic Instrument Co. with its eco-friendly brake pads; Shin Li Auto Parts with its line of brake drums, wheels hubs and flywheels; Yang Min with its automobile coil springs; Lihyann with its auto service and hardware tools; and Red Wood with its line of seat belts. ▲

Taipei AMPA Insights: Motorcycle Sales and Technology Trends for 2022 Supply shortages mean less tech, although motorcycles still have plenty of new features.

he COVID-19 pandemic kicked off an interest in motorcycles and powersports in such unbelievably high levels, no one could have predicted it. Therefore, it only makes sense that Taipei AMPA, which stays on top of the latest trends in the automotive aftermarket, would once again feature a pavilion and events, such as the Motorcyclists’ Accessories Roadshow & Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) Lecture, at this year’s show.

As we enter into 2022, we look forward to a new year of opportunities and breakthrough technology in the motorcycle industry. Some of the exhibitors showcasing motorcycle aftermarket parts at this year’s show include Speed Two with its gasket sets, Shang Ho Industrial Co. with its USB chargers, Exustar Enterprise Co., Ltd. with its motorcycle gear and Super Battery Co., Ltd. with its motorcycle batteries.

MOTORCYCLE SALES

We’re kicking off our 2022 predictions with the elephant in the room: motorcycle sales. If 2020 and 2021 have taught us anything, it’s that this is probably the toughest thing to predict. Every time you think you know what’s coming, the world pulls a 180, and your head starts to spin.

So, will people buy more motorcycles this year

than they did last year? We’re hoping that the answer is yes, but there are several factors which will have a big influence this year. You probably don’t need us to tell you about the supply chain issues that have affected companies worldwide. These issues bleed into every single industry, affecting consumer goods of all types, sizes and price points.

However, we’re going to focus our attention on the semiconductor chip shortage today.

There are reports of some car manufacturers excluding high-end technology from their vehicles.

This is because they simply can’t get the control modules they need to power these systems. Or, to be more specific, the control module manufacturers can’t get the semiconductor chips they need to build the control modules. This isn’t some sort of “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” conundrum; the control modules cannot exist without the chips, which are in such short supply. This means that new vehicles may be built without features that we take for granted, such as power seats, navigation systems, Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), digital dashboards — the list goes on and on.

The powersports world is not immune to the effects of the chip shortage. Modern motorcycles are just as dependent upon electronics as modern vehicles. We may see a reversal of that trend over

13 like the Ducati Monster. Look closely at the engine covers, and you’ll see what we mean.

TECHNOLOGY SURGES FORWARD

the next year or two if the chip shortage continues.

The other major factor to sales this year will be the labor shortage. This affects every part of the industry as well, whether it’s manufacturing, supply, shipping, sales or repair. As businesses struggle to find and keep skilled workers, they also struggle to move product.

So, where do we stand? We’ve said before that we’re optimistic for growth in 2022, but our crystal ball just doesn’t seem to be as clear as it once was.

CUTTING COSTS

Unfortunately, we don’t mean that manufacturers or dealers will be “slashing prices.” We’re talking about powersports manufacturers finding creative ways to reduce their operating and manufacturing costs to help them remain profitable. In some ways, that’s a good thing: Reducing costs is what helps companies to “weather the storm” and survive economic turbulence.

However, cutting costs can also have some negative effects, including what we discussed earlier about eliminating certain electronic-heavy systems due to the chip shortage. Or, manufacturers may look to reduce costs by replacing certain metal parts on motorcycles with less expensive plastic ones. In fact, this is already happening to some motorcycles,

Let’s shift our focus to motorcycle trends we see coming or growing in 2022. Despite the chip shortage and its effect on the global marketplace, we feel confident that the trend of adding electronic systems to modern motorcycles is here to stay.

When the supply of chips finally rises up to meet the demand, we expect to see a heavy surge of electronic systems being added to motorcycles.

We’ve seen an uptick in recent years of motorcycles offered with advanced safety systems.

These systems are usually focused on rider safety, but others are of the “creature comfort” variety.

Cruise control, traction control, front wheel lift control and anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are becoming much more common.

Tunable rider modes allow riders to adjust features like throttle response, traction control and ABS with the push of a button. More advanced systems — like Ducati’s front and rear radar technology — control the bikes’ adaptive cruise control (ACC) and blind spot detection (BSD). Ducati also offers advanced systems, such as an intelligent cornering system and semi-active suspension systems by Öhlins, on some of its high-end motorcycles. This system has the ability to automatically adjust compression and rebound damping in response to riding style based on information received from the inertial platform and other sensors.

Other companies are following this same trend.

Yamaha is now fitting cruise control, ABS as well as its state-of-the-art Yamaha six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) onto several motorcycles as standard, including the XSR900, MT-09 and MT-10.

The IMU system was originally developed for the YZF-R1, but it has evolved into a smaller and lighter unit featuring two sensors that measure three-axis angular velocity and three-axis acceleration, enabling a suite of rider aids, including lean sensitive traction control, a slide control system (SCS), a front wheel lift control system (LIF), engine brake management (EBM) and a brake control (BC) system with leansensitive ABS. The MT-10 SP, the performance variant of the MT-10, is fitted with the Öhlins semiactive suspension system, which allows riders to choose between three semi-active or three manual damping modes.

Yamaha also seems to be opting for full-color TFT displays on its bikes. These newer displays are brighter and easier to read, but the newer rectangular gauges just seem to lack the character the previous round generation had. Compare the gauge on the 2021 XSR900 with the new 2022 model, and you’ll see what we mean. ▲

Autotronics Taipei Insights: Where It Might Pay to Keep Up with EV Trends Auto logistics and transport companies are already beginning to make investments in EV-charging infrastructure.

eeping up with the trends isn’t easy. But it’s safe to say electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t just the next passing fad, as they are one of the hottest topics in the global automotive industry now.

Recognizing the importance EVs play today, this year’s Autotronics Taipei will once again feature the popular EV International Forum as well as an EV and E-Mobility Future Trends Roundtable (featuring a livestream option), where top industry professionals will discuss the latest developments in this segment.

In addition, several companies are capitalizing on the evolving EV trend and showcasing their products for this growing market. Just a few examples include: Sinpro, which makes EV hardware and software; Giant Protech (G-Pro), which manufactures EV wheels; Phihong Tech, which creates EV charging solutions; and Shihlin Electric & Engineering Corp., which manufactures EV powertrains.

Delving into EV market trends a bit further, many companies have already converted — or are looking to convert — their existing fleets to EVs. One look at

the recent partnership between Hertz and Tesla is enough proof of that, but with updates and changes to the EV landscape seemingly daily, fleet managers, dealerships and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) might be challenged by the need to keep up with all these trends.

Businesses in the automotive industry should know that feeling this way is kind of the norm right now, but if you look around, auto logistics and transport companies are already making investments in EV-charging infrastructure.

Especially in highly urban areas, you’ll see chargers are popping up pretty much overnight. Companies with a global presence, like Amazon and FedEx, have also announced the conversion of their fleets to be electric, and traditional OEMs are ramping up their EV production; in fact, almost 100 pure-battery electric vehicles are set to debut by the end of 2024.

Plus, let’s not forget that Ford plans to build mega campuses valued at more than $11 billion USD that will be used solely for EV production. And, General

EV sales are soaring across the U.S., China and Europe — meaning interest is peaking and people in the top automotive markets want to drive them.

Motors’ new electric commercial vehicle unit, BrightDrop, is focused on van production and has already started filling an order for FedEx Express.

If we’re exclusively looking at the U.S., this push for EVs has a lot to do with the government at the state and federal levels — no doubt about it. The Biden Administration wants EVs to make up 50% of vehicle sales by 2030 and aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Congress is even discussing an EV trade-in program that proposes consumers swap their existing gasoline-powered vehicles for zeroemissions vehicles.

GM and California are also pledging to sell only zero-emissions new vehicles by 2035. If other states and automakers follow suit, analysts predict that 25% of all new vehicle sales by then will be EVs. And, the International Energy Agency projects EV sales across the world will hit 145 million by the end of the decade.

EV sales are soaring across the U.S., China and Europe — meaning interest is peaking and people in the top automotive markets want to drive them.

In fact, sales increased by 160% to 2.6 million units in the first half of 2021 from a year earlier, representing 26% of new sales in the global automotive market. This is good news for fleet managers, dealers and OEMs. According to a recent Consumer Reports survey, 40% of all drivers plan to eventually purchase an EV, and the survey indicates younger drivers are more likely to buy electric vehicles than older ones.

Additionally, more than 70% of those surveyed believe EVs will reduce climate or air pollution and that automakers should offer other types of environmentally friendly vehicles, such as plug-in electric pickups and SUVs, alongside their current EV models.

As EVs become more available and are adopted by a higher percentage of the population, it’s important for those in the automotive industry to evaluate what that means for their businesses. Monitoring changes and having a plan to adapt accordingly is a great place to start. ▲

Autotronics Taipei Insights: ADAS Calibration Myths and Operation ADAS makes up a large part of the autotronics world now, but many techs don’t understand what happens during calibration.

Take Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS), for example. Various types of electronic technologies work together to assist drivers in driving- and parking-related functions, all the while increasing vehicle and road safety. However, as with all new technology, there are hurdles to overcome.

For instance, many shops and technicians can come up with multiple reasons why they don’t want to perform ADAS calibrations or invest in the equipment. In most cases, the need for the shop is to extinguish an ADAS-related malfunction code or light. The other common reason is to determine why a driver is experiencing false activation or warnings from an ADAS system. However, an ADAS calibration is much more.

A calibration procedure typically uses a target with a specific pattern, shape or even thickness.

The target is set at a specific distance, angle and orientation from a measured point on the vehicle.

The vehicle knows what the target or fixture should look or sound like because it was programmed into the system at the factory. The scan tool activates this “memory” from its birthday, so it can compare and possibly adjust.

Long-range sensors are used to measure the presence, distance and even speed in the narrow cone. They can measure up to 600 feet in front of the vehicle. Their position can be moved using adjustment screws behind the sensor to adjust direction and elevation. This type of adjustment is typically required if the sensor has been replaced or disturbed. Long-range sensors generally are mounted above or below the front bumper.

Mid-range can detect objects 200 feet from the vehicle. But mid-range radar sensors only measure objects that are in near proximity to the vehicle.

These radar sensors can be used for blind spot and cross-traffic detection. Calibration of radar sensors typically involves adjusting their position. Mid-range sensors can be mounted behind bumper covers, roof pillars and the corners of the vehicle.

CALIBRATION The majority of forward-facing cameras can’t mechanically change their point of view. The focus and field of view are set at the factory, and there are typically no moving parts. For example, no motors are moving the zoom or the angle of the camera.

Instead, corrections are made with software that can “crop” in on the correct field of view and the vehicle’s centerline.

Think of the camera lens as a wide-angle, but the software uses it as a telephoto.

The same is true for blind-spot and rearview cameras. So, when technicians are calibrating the camera system, they are calibrating what area of the image the camera pays attention to. This prevents a roadside sign or a car in the next lane from becoming classified as an obstacle. Think of it as adjusting the blinders on a horse.

SENSORS

Radar sensors emit radio waves that bounce off objects and are received by the sensor. These types of sensors can detect objects and vehicles no matter the lighting conditions. There are two types of radar: long-range and mid-range.

The ADAS module assumes that the target is positioned correctly when the scan tool initiates the calibration mode. The system trusts that one takes the time to set up the targets with some degree of accuracy. It compares the factory settings to the actual values. With this information, it can adjust. If the required adjustment is outside of the parameters, a mechanical adjustment to the sensor will then have to be made to the mount or adjusters — if you are lucky.

When you set up a target or fixture for a camera or radar, the position and distance from the vehicle is critical to the performance and operation of the system. If the target or fixture is a few millimeters off when placed a few meters from the sensor, it can change the alignment of the sensor by meters when it is pointed down the road or the height of the vehicle in the blind spot.

I know what you are thinking: What about dynamic relearns? It is the same philosophy, but instead of targets, the system uses specific inputs from the vehicle to the calibration. For example, many calibrations involve driving a road with the proper lines to calibrate the camera. Imagine you are the vehicle: You can see with the camera, and you know vehicle speed, steering angle and other inputs. ▲

PARKING SENSORS

Automotive manufacturers have taken the lead to further improve safety levels by using ultrasonic sensors installed on bumpers. Common passive functions include low-speed obstacle detection, parking distance detection and integration with camera images to mark obstacles and help drivers avoid dangerous situations.

The development of products set ISO-17386 as the standard, and the analytical test in reversing must fully comply with the detection definition and response time in different directions. • For the matching design (inside of the amplifier), it can help customers improve antenna sensitivity and reception effect.

CONTROL ARM

UIL FU’s control arm is durable, and the body is lightweight and uses high-intensity steel plates. Its surface is treated with an anti-rust powder coating and can withstand exposure in harsh road conditions, such as rain, snow, gravel and mud.

• With a lightweight strong design, its material strength is better than international standards.

• It is made with high-quality stamping steel, aluminum, forged steel or cast-iron material. It fits with original parts and has good capacity.

• The material and steel sleeve are tested with tensile and rubber elasticity to ensure the durability of every part meets original equipment standards.

• The all-metal wishbone and control arm undergoes an antioxidant treatment. By using powder coating, they become anti-rust and impact resistant and can have increased use life. At the same time, the appearance is exquisite.

• The aluminum-alloy-made control arm is tested strictly to ensure bushings do not come off.

SUSPENSION AND STEERING

UIL FU (CENTRAL) has obtained the highest level of IATF16949 certification for auto parts and is exporting to Europe, North America, Central and South America, Japan and the Middle East for more than 50 years.

UIL FU (CENTRAL) considers that the products have to be suitable for all kinds of harsh weather and road conditions.

Through global service feedback, we collect environmental data of local roads. Research and development (R&D) products are strictly measured and calculated, materials are strictly checked, and the manufacturing process is constantly pursuing better construction methods. From the mold design, processing, stamping, forging, cutting, drilling, welding, quality control and product assembly to finished product packaging, each process affects the quality of the product, and UIL FU strives to improve the quality and efficiency by standardizing the production process while at the same time meeting your needs.

SAFETY CHECKS

For your safety, UIL FU (CENTRAL) checks all quality products shipping to clients with very strict standards: • CSC and FENG HSIN STEEL, the two major steel companies, forge the raw materials for UIL FU (CENTRAL) brand products.

• Teflon is added to the inner sleeve of the ball joint, and a knurled design is added to strengthen the contact surface between the outer diameter of the ball head and the iron plate frame, making it firmer.

• All bearing shafts are subjected to hardness quenching and tempering heat treatment.

• The rubber boots are made of CR-enhanced material (cold resistance up to -50 degrees and heat resistance up to 130 degrees).

• We use Japanese lubricating grease for our ball joint (cold resistance up to -40 degrees and heat resistance up to 130 degrees). The control arm’s surface is treated with a reinforced, anti-rust powder coating.

• All electro-deposition paints are compliant with the EU RoHS specification, and we received the SGS certification for them.

• The welded sections of the stabilizer links are subjected to a 90-degree bending failure test for each batch.

TIK Piston TIK Piston is one of the largest piston manufacturers in Taiwan. Although the electric car is the future trend, in the short- to mid- timeframe, we feel the aftermarket around the world will still have a demand for engine repairs.

As a way to provide O.E. standard quality assurance, TIK Piston has passed IATF 16949 certification since 2019 and TS16949 since 2006. We never stop improving ourselves so that customers can do business with us without ever having any worries about product quality.

In addition, TIK Piston keeps investing in the performance market to demonstrate the ability to boost the engine from 200 horsepower to approximately 1,000 to 3,000 horsepower. To be able to achieve this goal, TIK is working with forged pistons to satisfy the market demand and modifying the piston from general usage to performance.

Having new products available to meet current market demand is also crucial for us. Currently, we are having to meet more than 3,000 different engine applications to fulfill global demand.

With more than 40 years of experience, we offer a complete set of engine repair parts under the brand name Liner.
