Horizon Gaïa et 20 septembre à La Chaux-de-Fonds Désormais, c'est officiel. Au fait, à propos d'encouragement et afin de célébrer en 2019 le quart de siècle du prix, une quatrième catégorie verra le jour: Horizon Gaïa. Elle récompensera par une bourse financée par la Fondation Watch Academy et sur présentation de dossiers jusqu'au 21 mars, un projet individuel dont la durée devrait couvrir une année. Décidément, avec une enveloppe financière à la clef, le prix Gaïa créé en mémoire du mécène Maurice Ditisheim.

Mon hommage à Maximilian Busser Un marketeur malgré lui! Bien qu’il s’en défende, Maximilian Büsser mériterait d’avoir une chaire universitaire d’enseignement du marketing.

L’homme fait des choix, il les attribue aux hasards des rencontres, à cette sorte d’opportunisme curieux qui transforme les idées et les contacts en dessein de vie, en parcours entrepreneurial. Il se garde bien de dire qu’ils sont issus d’une vision, d’une planification, bref d’un quelconque calcul. Et pourtant, ses choix pourraient être enseignés comme des cas de figure dans les plus nobles institutions du marketing. N’a-t-il pas un jour, en croisant François-Paul Journe dans les allées de Baselworld, lancé la saga des Opus pour une marque dont il avait la garde et qui, avant son coup de génie, n’avait qu’une image séculaire de haute-joaillerie? En un tour de main, bravant toutes les mises en garde que les pros du secteur auraient distillées à tout téméraire désireux de s’aventurer sur les terres du co-branding, il confère à Harry Winston une dimension d’horlogerie ultra-complexe, prisées par les collectionneurs et les découvreurs du monde.

Autre fait à haute valeur marketing ajoutée, il lance sa marque en ajoutant à ses initiales, la notion de friends. En un certain sens, il applique à l’horlogerie ce que la street culture a offert au hip hop, la dimension de featuring. Et d’ouvrir les zones presse où les visuels en haute définition se chargent et où les derniers communiqués se téléchargent, alors que d’autres les barricadent à grands renforts de codes et d’inscriptions à confirmer donc à trier. Un open source de l’information, là encore, une petite révolution qui va dans la même direction que celle de jouer la plus totale transparence en révélant les identités de ses fournisseurs, subtilement transformés en

friends.

By the way, about promotion and in order to celebrate in 2019 the quarter of a century of the prize, a fourth category will be born that evening: Horizon Gaïa. It will reward an individual one-year project by the attribution of a grant financed by the Watch Academy Foundation. The closing date for registration is 21 March 2019. The Gaïa Prize, created in memory of the patron Maurice Ditisheim, is even more reminiscent of the Nobel Prize, with a financial allotment.

He’s a man who makes decisions, but he attributes them to serendipitous encounters, to the kind of curiosity-driven opportunism that transforms ideas and contacts into life goals and then into an entrepreneurial career. What he does not say, is that they are born of a vision, of planning, in short of some calculation. And yet his choices could be taught like case studies in the most illustrious marketing institutions. Was it not he who, after meeting François-Paul Journe in the halls of Baselworld, decided to launch the Opus saga for a brand he was in charge of? A brand that had long maintained a highjewelry image, before Büsser’s stroke of genius? In a twinkling of an eye, and disregarding the warnings from professionals in the sector against anyone who would so bold as to venture into the realm of co-branding, Büsser managed to endow Harry Winston with an ultra complex watchmaking dimension that has become highly coveted by collectors and those wishing to discover this world.

Another fact with high added marketing value was the launch of his own brand, adding to his initials the word “friends.” In some ways, he brought to watchmaking what street culture gave to hip-hop, a “featuring” aspect. He opened up his press pages where high-definition visuals are loaded and the latest press releases can be downloaded, while other brands barricade themselves behind codes and registrations that have to be confirmed and therefore undergo triage. He has applied the open source idea to information, and here too one finds a little revolution that is similar to the one of being totally transparent, because he also reveals the names of his suppliers, who’ve been subtly turned into friends.

l’Ecole d’horlogerie de Hambourg-Altona. Il exerce ensuite sa profession d’horloger à Eutin et Husum. A l'âge de 27 ans, il se spécialise dans la mécanique de précision à Schwenningen puis s'engage auprès des maisons Siemens et Telefunken. De 1973 à 1991, Reinhard Meis est assistant technique des Prof.

Bömmel et Dransfeld à la Faculté de physique de l’Université de Constance et s'active notamment dans le domaine de la physique des solides. Parallèlement, il rédige des ouvrages de référence : Die alte Uhr, Tas- chenuhren, IWC-Uhren, Das Tourbillon et Armbanduhren Chronographen – traduits dans plusieurs langues – ainsi qu'une soixantaine d'articles dans des revues.

En 1991, Reinhard Meis devient conseiller technique et concepteur de mouvements pour la maison Lange Uhren. Il

est à l'origine des premières collections de la Maison Lange & Söhne sous la Direction de Günter Blümlein. Il participe à la réalisation d'expositions pour les marques du groupe LMH (Les Manufactures Horlo- gères) : Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC et Lange & Söhne. Parallèlement pendant ses loisirs il poursuit son activité de chercheur et d'auteur en publiant notamment A. Lange & Söhne: eine Uhrmacherdynastie aus Dresden (1997) et A. Lange & Söhne, feine Uhren aus Sachsen. En 2004, il rejoint le Pôle Mouvement de Richemont à Neuchâtel en tant qu'ingénieur directeur pour le design de produits et la haute horlogerie et consultant pour les marques du groupe. Depuis 2011, Reinhard Meis bénéficie d'une retraite qu'il consacre à des travaux d'écriture.

Career Reinhard Meis was born in 1940 into a family of watchmakers, in Koppelow in northern Germany. He completed his apprenticeship as a watchmaker in Minden and Eutin and trained at the School of Watchmaking in Altona, Hamburg. He then began his career as a watchmaker in Eutin and Husum. At the age of 27, he specialised in precision mechanics in Schwenningen, before working with Siemens and Telefunken.

the University of Konstanz, specialising in the field of solidstate physics. At the same time, he wrote the reference works Die alte Uhr, Taschenuhren, IWC-Uhren, Das Tourbillon", and Arm- banduhren Chronographen – which were translated into several languages – in addition to around sixty journal articles.

In 1991, Reinhard Meis became technical adviser and movement designer at Lange Uhren. He was the man behind the first collections from Lange & Söhne under the directorship of Günter Blümlein. He helped to create exhibitions for the brands Jaeger-LeCoultre, IWC and Lange & Söhne in the Les Manufactures Horlogères (LMH) group. At the same time, he invested his leisure time pursuing his activities as a researcher and author, notably publishing the books A. Lange & Söhne: eine Uhr- macherdynastie aus Dresden (1997) and A. Lange & Söhne, feine Uhren aus Sachsen. In 2004, he returned to the Richemont Movement Centre in Neuchâtel as engineering director for prod- uct design and fine watchmaking and as a consultant for the group's brands.

Reinhard Meis has been enjoying his retirement since 2011, dedicating his time to his passion for writing.

Sa carrière A à peine 15 ans, Paul Clementi quitte sa Drôme natale pour fréquenter l'école d'horlogerie de Besançon. Dans cet environnement totalement différent, seule l'horlogerie lui rappelle l'arrière-boutique du magasin de son père, là où est née sa passion pour la mécanique.

Dès 1980, Paul Clementi entreprend une formation d'horlogerrhabilleur puis se spécialise dans la restauration d'horlogerie ancienne à La Chaux-de-Fonds, ayant comme professeurs, entre autres, Jean-Claude Nicolet, Pierre Willen et JeanMichel Piguet. Durant son séjour, il participe à l'analyse de la

pendule trois roues de Breguet, construit un échappement à détente, rédige un rapport sur Abraham Louis Breguet. En 1986, il entre chez L'épée à Ste Suzanne comme prototypiste, créant de nouveaux modèles de pendulettes et d'objets divers avant de rejoindre l'équipe de Michel Parmigiani à Fleurier en 1989.

Il y réalise notamment la restauration d'une pendule sympathique de Breguet et construit ex nihilo des objets d'exception. Curieux et ouvert d'esprit, il a acquis des compétences de très haut niveau dans des domaines variés et pointus (mathématique, technique, physique et artistique) en s'appuyant sur un réseau des meilleurs spécialistes de ces domaines.

Discret mais soucieux de transmettre ses connaissances, il s'est toujours orienté vers la transmission de son savoir, ce qui le conduit à l'Ecole Technique de La Chaux-de-Fonds (19941997), à former des apprentis puis à enseigner à la HE-ARC (2012-2016). Il est également l'auteur de plusieurs articles dans les revues horlogères spécialisées et réalise des recherches historiques. Il est actuellement directeur technique chez Bovet.

Craftmanship-Creation category The Gaïa Prize jury highlights Paul Clementi's extensive skills in craftsmanship and use of historical knowledge to produce inventive creations, with the highest standards of professional conduct.

Career At just 15 years old, Paul Clementi left his native Drôme to attend the Besançon watchmaking school. In this completely different environment, watchmaking was the only reminder of the back room of his fa- ther's shop, where his passion for all things mechanical was born.

In 1980, Paul Clementi trained as a watchmaker/repairer, later specialising in antique watch restoration in La Chaux-deFonds under the tutelage of Jean-Claude Nicolet, Pierre Willen and Jean-Michel Piguet, among others. During his training, he conducted an analysis of the Breguet three-wheel clock,

constructed a detent escapement, and prepared a report on Abraham Louis Breguet.

In 1986, he began work as a prototype maker at L'Epée in Sainte-Suzanne, creating new models of table clocks and other objects, before joining Michel Parmigiani's team in Fleurier in 1989. There, he restored a Breguet Sympathique clock and created exceptional objects from scratch. Curious and open-minded, he acquired very high-level skills in diverse specialised areas (mathematics, technology, physics and art), assisted by a network of top experts in these fields.

Reserved but keen to share his knowledge, he was always looking to pass on his expertise, which led him to the Technical College in La Chaux-de-Fonds (1994- 1997), to train apprentices, then to teach at HE-ARC (2012-2016). He also contributed several articles to specialist watchmaking publications and conducted historical research. He is now the Technical Director at Bovet.

Sa carrière Maximilian Büsser est né en 1967 en Italie, à Milan. Très jeune, il s’installe en Suisse, à Lausanne, où il passe toute sa jeunesse. Ingénieur de formation, il est titulaire d'un diplôme en microtechnique de l'Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (1991). Sa passion pour l'horlogerie, Maximilian Büsser se l'est forgée au sein de Jaeger-LeCoultre, qui décuple son chiffre d’affaires au cours des années 1990. Au sein de cette maison, il assume les fonctions de Responsable produit et de Responsable ventes et marketing pour l’Europe.

Entrepreneur dans l’âme, il n’est âgé que de 31 ans lorsqu’il est nommé Directeur Général de Harry Winston Timepieces.

Durant sept années, il transforme cette entité en une marque horlogère respectée, développant stratégie, produits, marketing et distribution internationale, tout en intégrant dans la structure le design, la recherche & développement et la fabrication. Le chiffre d’affaires de la société augmente de 900% et Harry Winston s’est positionné comme un acteur majeur de ce segment très concurrentiel.

En juillet 2005, Maximilian Büsser crée le premier Label créatif en haute-horlogerie – MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends) – dans lequel il est désormais associé avec Serge Kriknoff. Il réalise alors son rêve : celui de posséder sa propre marque qui se consacre au développement de concepts horlogers radicaux, au sein de petits groupes extrêmement créatifs, composés de personnes avec lesquelles il aime collaborer.

L'Horological Machine N°1, présentée en 2007, est la première pièce qui reflète l'état d'esprit de MB&F : conçue à l'image d'un être vivant, elle possède deux cadrans posés côte à côte qui donnent séparément les heures et les minutes, tandis que les quatre barillets, à l'instar des poumons, déploient une énergie commune faisant marcher le cœur de la montre.

Principales réalisations En 2007, MB&F a dévoilé la HM1, sa première Horological Machine. Avec son boîtier sculptural en trois dimensions et son mouvement merveilleusement décoré, la HM1 a donné le ton des Horological Machines qui ont suivi : HM2, HM3, HM4, HM5, HM6, HM7, HM8 et HMX — des Machines qui symbolisent le temps plutôt que des Machines qui donnent l’heure.

En 2015, c’est au tour de la Legacy Machine Perpetual munie d’un calendrier perpétuel complètement intégré. La LM Split Escapement a été dévoilée en 2017. A ce jour, MB&F alterne entre Horological Machines résolument anticonformistes et Legacy Machines inspirées par l’histoire.

En 2011, MB&F a lancé la collection des rondes Legacy Machines. Ces pièces plus classiques — classiques pour MB&F — rendent hommage à l’excellence horlogère du XIXe siècle, en réinterprétant des complications de grands horlogers novateurs sous la forme d’objets d’art contemporains. Les LM1 et LM2 ont été suivies par la LM101, la première Machine MB&F équipée d’un mouvement entièrement développé à l’interne.

A côté des Horological et Legacy Machines, MB&F a créé des boîtes à musique spatiales (MusicMachine 1, 2 et 3) en collaboration avec Reuge, Manufacture de musique mécanique et Maison de Luxe; ainsi que des horloges de table avec L’Epée 1839 : une horloge à l’apparence d’une plateforme spatiale (Starfleet Ma- chine), une fusée (Destination Moon) une araignée (Arachnophobia), une pieuvre (Octopod), ainsi que trois horloges-robot (Melchior, Sherman et Balthazar). En 2016, MB&F et Caran d’Ache ont créé un stylo mé-canique en forme de fusée appelé Astrograph.

MB&F s’est vu attribuée quatre distinctions au Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève : en 2016 la Legacy Machine Perpetual a été lauréate de la montre calendrier, en 2012 la Legacy Machine n°1 a été double- ment récompensée par des passionnés d’horlogerie avec le Prix du Public ainsi que par un jury professionnel avec le Prix de la montre Homme et, en 2010, HM4 Thunderbolt remporte le Prix de la montre design.

Last but not least, la HM6 Space Pirate a été récompensée en 2015 par un « Red Dot : Best of the Best » — prix phare de la compétition internationale des Red Dot Awards.

Career Maximilian Büsser was born in 1967 in Milan, Italy. As a very young boy, he moved to Lausanne in Switzer- land, where he spent the rest of his childhood. In July 2005, Maximilian Büsser created the first creative label in fine watchmaking – MB&F (Maximilian Büsser & Friends) – in collaboration with Serge Kriknoff. This enabled him to achieve his dream: to have his own brand dedicated to developing radical watchmaking concepts, within highly creative small groups, made up of people with whom he loved working. The Horological Machine No. 1, unveiled in 2007, was the first piece to reflect the MB&F state of mind: designed to look like a living creature, it features two juxtaposed dials showing the hours and minutes sepa- rately; meanwhile, its four barrels – like lungs – deploy a common energy which powers the heart of the watch.

In addition to its Horological and Legacy Machines, MB&F has created spatial music boxes (MusicMa- chines 1, 2 and 3) in collaboration with Reuge, a premier producer of mechanical music boxes; and table clocks in collaboration with Epée 1839: a clock which is designed to look like a space platform (Starfleet Ma- chine), a rocket (Destination Moon), a spider (Arach- nophobia), an octopus (Octopod), and three robot clocks (Melchior, Sherman and Balthazar). In 2016, MB&F and Caran d’Ache co-created a writing instru- ment in the shape of a rocket called the Astrograph.

MB&F has won four accolades at the Grand Prix d'Hor- logerie de Genève: in 2016, the Legacy Machine Perpetual won the calendar watch award; in 2012, the Legacy Machine No. 1 received a double accolade: firstly from watchmaking fans who awarded it the People's Choice Award and, secondly, from a professional jury who awarded it the Men's Watch Prize; then, in 2010, the HM4 Thunderbolt won the Design Watch Prize.

Last but not least, in 2015, the HM6 Space Pirate was awarded a "Red Dot: Best of the GAÏA PRIZE 2018 Best" award — the top prize available at the Red Dot Awards international competition.
