Black is back: TAG Heuer Carrera für Chinas Flug auf den Mond (Chinese Lunar Exploration Program), um die 5000 Franken.

Jean-Claude Biver ist immer für eine Überraschung gut. Dieses Mal nicht so sehr bezüglich der Uhr, sondern dem Sponsoring: Er hat es gescha!t, das beim nächsten Flug zum Mond der Chinesen eine TAG Heuer mit dabei sein wird - und auf dem Mondfahrzeug neben Chinas National"agge sein rot-grünes Marken-Emblem prangen wird. Für TAG Heuer, die vor 2011 auf dem chinesischen Markt fast nicht präsent war, ist das eine einmalige Chance, sich in den Köpfen von 1,4 Milliarden Chinesen zu verankern. Denn die Raumfahrt ist im Reich der Mitte ein Prestige-Projekt, dem ungeteilte Bewunderung zukommt. 2020 ist bereits der Flug zum Mars geplant. Die Uhr ist technisch nicht ganz so modern, ist aber in ein schwarzes, PVD-beschichtetes Gehäuse (43 mm) gepackt.

Passend dazu ist die Keramik-Lunette und das sandgestrahlte Zi!erblatt. Darunter arbeitet ein Heuer01-Uhrwerk. Es gibt Marken, die sind j체nger als der Stil ihrer Uhren: Bell & Ross wurde 1992 in Paris von Designer Bruno Belamich und Unternehmer Carlos Rosillo gegr체ndet, der 2018 lancierte Chronograph V2-94 ist jedoch deutlich von den Modellen aus den 1960er-Jahren inspiriert worden. Die beiden Jungunternehmer haben eine coole Marke aufgebaut und erhielten 1997 eine Kapitalspritze vom ber체hmten Modehaus Chanel, das seither als bedeutender Minderheitsaktion채r an Bell & Ross beteiligt ist.

Hergestellt werden die jährlich über 60'000 Zeitmesser im gleichen Betrieb in La Chaux-de-Fonds, der auch für Chanel-Uhren produziert. Bell & Ross zeigt, was man mit gutem Design aus einer Uhr herausholen kann: Hier stimmen alle Proportionen und Farben. Die Lunette ist sehr schmal gehalten, was den 41 mm grossen Zeitmesser elegant wirken lässt. Die creme-farbenen Indizes und Zeiger geben der Uhr mit dem gewölbten Saphirglas einen charmanten Vintage-Touch, die verschraubten Kronen und Drücker verweisen auf eine Instrumenten-Uhr. Sie ist bis 100 Meter wasserdicht, was man stolz in rot auf das Zi!erblatt geschrieben hat. Den sonst üblichen, separaten Stunden-Zähler und hat man der Klarheit des Designs geopfert. Die Gestaltung ist top, aber technisch ist die Uhr bloss Mittelmass: Sie basiert auf einem Standard-Eta-Uhrwerk mit automatischem Aufzug.

ein Begri!, weil sie vor Jahrzehnten für grosse Namen wie Breguet, Ulysse Nardin oder Girard-Perregaux Uhren herstellte. Heute ist Mathey-Tissot vor allem Tiefpreissegment aktiv - und für die billig wirkenden Kopien der Rolex GMT (allerdings ohne zweite Zeitzone) müsste man das Unternehmen abstrafen. Das ist phantasielos und albern. Aber Firmenchef Alberto F. Bonvicino macht noch anderes - sinnvolleres: Er hat den begabten Uhrendesigner Eric Giroud beauftragt, ein Modell aus den frühen 1970er-Jahren neu zu gestalten. Herausgekommen ist ein formschönes Gehäuse (42 mm) mit sandgestrahlten und polierten Ober"ächen - und fünf tollen Zi!erblatt-Farben: Rauchfarbenes Rot, Grün, Grau, Blau und Braun. Unter den bunten tickt ein Sellita-Werk mit automatischen Aufzug (SW200), das ermöglicht einen Preis von 1500 Franken. Originale aus der Zeit - damals allerdings mit einem Eta-Werk, kosten heute ähnlich viel (siehe Bild unten).

Streng geometrisch: Rado Tradition 1965, Damenmodell mit 35mm-Gehäuse und Automatik-Uhrwerk von Eta, 1900 Franken.

Mutig waren die Uhrenhersteller in den 1960er-Jahren, zum Beispiel bei Rado: Inspiriert von der Skyline von Manhattan gestalteten die damaligen Designer einen streng geometrischen, rechteckigen Zeitmesser mit markanten Index-Formen, welche die Zeiger aufnehmen. Der bewegliche rote Anker, das Markenzeichen von Rado, darf natürlich nicht fehlen. Diese Uhr wird in einer 44 und 35mm-Version hergestellt, wobei das kleinere Damenmodell deutlich besser proportioniert wirkt. Hübsch dazu ist das stark gewölbte Saphir-Glas und das silberne Zi!erblatt, das gut mit dem massiven Lederband harmoniert. Die Zeiger werden von bewährter Eta-Mechanik (Cal. 2671) angetrieben. Der Preis fällt mit 1900 Franken moderat aus, allerdings ist die Serie auf 1965 Stück limitiert. Zukunftsvision: Citizen Calibre 0100

Ein freundlicher japanischer Ingenieur hat am Stand von Citizen in Basel den Grund erklärt: Die üblichen Quarz-Werke verwenden als Taktgeber einen Oszillator, der mit einer Frequenz von 32,768 Kilohertz vibriert. Citizen setzt nun für die ultrapräzise Uhr einen Taktgeber aus der Computertechnik ein, der 256 Mal schneller vibriert - mit 8,4 Megahertz. Dank der viel höheren Frequenz arbeitet die Uhr viel präziser. Das grösste Hindernis, dass es dabei zu bewältigen gibt, ist der deutlich höhere Stromverbrauch des ultraschnellen Oszillators. Doch auch dafür haben die Japaner offenbar eine Antwort gefunden: Sie haben den Energiebedarf minimiert und setzen Solarzellen zur Speisung ein. Die Swatch Group arbeitet ebenfalls an einem ultragenauen, elektronischen Gangregler, der die Präzision herkömmlicher Uhren deutlich verbessern könnte.

The first thing that captured my attention on the 1886 is the slightly curved case, which is decidedly 1970s in shape.

Those years just happen to be among the most successful in the brand’s history. With a modest 42mm case diameter, the stainless steel case also sports a nice matte sandblasted finish.

At $1,500 for the mechanical version and $500 for the quartz version, with a design by Eric Giroud, this looks like a fairly priced watch. The total run, including quartz and mechanical variations, and all the dierent dials, will be 1,886 pieces.

La marque historique Mathey-Tissot confie au designer Eric Giroud la création d’une icône. Un retour dans l’actualité horlogère mondiale, légitimé par de précieuses archives retrouvées et par d’honorables performances sur eBay. Particulièrement déterminée en matière d’accessibilité grâce à son prix attractif, la nouveauté Mathey-Tissot «1886» s’érige en repère esthétique de l’actualité horlogère mondiale 2018. Pétrie de justesse, l’histoire de sa conception monopolise l’attention.

En effet, si les années 70 sont dans l’air du temps, si ceux qui s’en réclament et alimentent le courant vintage sont nombreux, peu comme Mathey-Tissot peuvent, en raison d’une production particulièrement riche et soutenue durant cette période de son histoire, brandir la plus absolue des légitimités.

Nouvelle «1886», célébration du trait et du dessin.

C’est au coeur de cet âge d’or patrimonial que le fameux designer Eric Giroud a planté la sonde de son inspiration. Il a su en extraire pour les transcender des codes esthétiques propres à Mathey-Tissot. Une rencontre avant tout, une découverte aussi. En résulte «1886» une montre qui, de manière totalement assumée, préfère incarner les valeurs de l’élégance universelle empruntées aux seventies plutôque d’en revendiquer un quelconque côté sportif. Trois aiguilles, un guichet date doté d’une virgule de subtilité graphique, une sobriété érigée en style. Il y a la douceur de ses formes, il y a ce sablé mat soigné et ultrafin qui transforme son allure en objet de caresse. Il y a enfin cette glace discrètement bombée, cette couronne remontoir élégamment lovée dans le pourtour adouci d’une carrure aux cornes protectrices. Une géométrie et un rapport à la lumière qui respirent avec force la douceur absolue, jamais l’effacement.

Soudain les cadrans de la «1886», un festival de teintes fumées. La «1886», pétrie de douceurs arrondies et d’une contemporanéité visuelle faite de touchers organiques, se dote par surprise et sans complexe de couleurs vivifiantes. The famous designer, Eric Giroud, delved deep into the brand’s golden age for his inspiration. He was able not only to extract the aesthetic codes peculiar to MatheyTissot, but also transcend them artistically. Something of a mix between an encounter and a discovery, the resultant “1886” is a watch that prefers to abandon the sporty look in favour of adopting the values of universal elegance championed in the 70s. Three hands, the graphic subtlety of the date aperture, stylish sobriety.

Beyond these, the watch features gently rounded forms and matt sandblasted finish, transforming it into an exquisitely tactile object. And, last but not least, the gently domed crystal and winding crown nestling into the circumference of a powerfully graphical dial, its strong lines softened by the distinctive case-middle with protective horns.

The “1886”, with its soft rounded curves, contemporary visual appeal and organic touches, has suddenly and unabashedly opted for a lively colour scheme. The idea of using smoky shades would have been purely whimsical for designer Eric Giroud if Mathey-Tissot’s past had not already given them historical legitimacy. The legendary colour graduations, Mathey-Tissot’s focal palette, systematically call up and deviate from the customary Pantone colour chart in a bid to remain faithful to the bold aesthetics of the brand’s prestigious past. The smoky green, brown, blue and grey, and, likewise, the deep, reassuring black have been a feature of the brand’s DNA consistently throughout the 130 years of its uninterrupted industrial and manufacturing history. The unique new shades are all as many aesthetic sparks replete with powerful static charge and colour force to electrify the sombre darkness.

Quick Take When you see that acclaimed watch designer Eric Giroud has lent his talents to a new watch, it’s usually worth taking a closer look. Over a lengthy career, Giroud has worked with many of the major brands in Swiss watchmaking, from independents to major brands. Most often, Giroud’s work has focused on high-end models with limited production runs, with an emphasis on smaller marques open to exploring avant garde watch designs. His latest project is an affordably priced, retro-influenced wristwatch that references common watchmaking design cues from the 1970s such as integrated lugs, rounded, sloping contours, bold stick markers, and, most prominently, fumé dials.

Initial Thoughts Despite the 19th-century product name, the 1886 Limited Edition wristwatch actually references sports watches from the 1970s. 1886 is the year of MatheyTissot’s founding in Paris, France, and this important year is inscribed in a couple of places on this watch: directly to the right of the date window, which is located at three o’clock, and on the left-hand side of the caseband. For the price, the 1886 looks like an attractive and well-executed, if perhaps somewhat boring, timepiece. It’s as if you plugged 70s era wristwatch into a search engine and it returned this timepiece.

But of course, one has to consider the price. At $1,500 for the mechanical version and $500 for the quartz versionn, with a design by Eric Giroud, this looks like a fairly priced watch. The total run, including quartz and mechanical variations, and all the different dials, will be 1,886 pieces.

Cette année, il a travaillé avec Mathey-Tissot, une marque horlogère suisse de Genève, vieille de 130 ans, avec une montre « trois aiguilles-date » qui fleure bon le vintage –les seventies plus précisément- avec son cadran fumé.

Baptisée 1886, il s’agit d’une montre de ville ronde dotée d’un boitier acier sablé-mat de 42 mm (étanche 5 atm) accueillant un calibre mécanique automatique, le SW200 de Sellita, que l’on retrouve dans de nombreuses pièce montres. L’heure s’a!che par le biais de trois aiguilles et la date est située dans un guichet à 3h. L’ensemble est protégé par une glace légèrement bombée pour renforcer l’aspect vintage.

Mais ce qui caractérise cette nouveauté, c’est bien évidemment son cadran fumé. Une grande tendance issue du vintage remis au gout du jour par Moser il y a déjà quelques années. Cinq couleurs sont disponibles : un classique noir, puis du vert fumé, du rouge fumé, du gris fumé, du bleu fumé et du marron fumé.

L’ensemble se porte sur un bracelet en cuir de veau italien imprimé croco sur boucle déployante. Compter dans les 1.700 euros. Mathey-Tissot produit environ 50.000 montres par an.

L’acte est plus que légitime puisque, à feuilleter les pages du Journal Suisse d’Horlogerie du siècle dernier ou à passer en revue les contenus d’autres publications de la branche, la marque neuchâteloise regorge de modèles iconiques, comme cette pièce dessinée avec Elvis Presley, comme cette ‘coin watch’ d’or ou d’argent, comme enfin cette ‘Type 20’ dont l’esthétique universelle, indéniablement associée aux «tool watches» de l’aviation, a fait l’objet de plusieurs tentatives récentes d’appropriation. Bref, côté pluralité de designs, dans les années septante, Mathey-Tissot est en pleine âge d’or.

Légitime, elle l’était également avec en 2016 le lancement de son calibre maison, une bien belle manière de célébrer ses 130 années d’existence ininterrompue et surtout, de «remettre quelques pendules à l’heure» puisque Edmond Mathey-Tissot, le père fondateur aux Ponts-de-Martel, dans le Canton de Neuchâtel, de la Fabrique d’Horlogerie éponyme, livrait ses calibres mécaniques ou compliqués à des marques dont les noms et le prestige donnent encore aujourd’hui le vertige: les horlogers Breguet, LeCoultre, Piaget, Henri Moser, Ulysse Nardin, Edmond Heuer, Louis Audemars ou Vacheron Constantin… (lire notre sujet historique) (https://www.watchonista.com/fr/articles/histoire/matheytissot-lhistoire-ininterrompue-dune-legende-horlogere)

Sablé ultra!n, douceur des formes, clin d’œil contemporain aux seventies A quoi un designer jouissant d’une présence médiatique et d’une notoriété indéniable peut-il penser lorsqu’il réalise, dans cette mission-là, qu’il ne se trouve pas face à un énième briefing créatif, mais en présence d’une immensité historique? Certes, Eric Giroud assure. Et c’est peut-être parce qu’il est en mesure de gérer ce genre de pression qu’il réussit avec la 1886 un coup de maître. Il parle de «ciment» lorsqu’il évoque l’assise historique. A première vue, et ce n’est que personnel, la pièce en photo, tout au moins sur le fond d’écran des actuels dirigeants de Mathey-Tissot, me touche. Indéniablement, elle respire l’équilibre intemporel d’une esthétique dont le simple effleurement visuel me laisse imaginer qu’elle pourrait se frayer un chemin vers les horizons enviés de l’îconisation.

Quelques jours après, je la prends en main, la tourne et la retourne. Il s’agit d’un prototype dont quelques détails stylistiques doivent encore être affinés. Là, j’avoue tomber dans une surprise quasi organique, prévue peut-être par le designer qui savait qu’au toucher des surfaces mates de la lunette et de la boîte en acier 316 L, comme arrondies par une érosion intemporelle aussi inexorable qu’un coulis de sable ultrafin au goulet d’un sablier, j’allais être envahi par l’émotion. Cette pièce d’un diamètre de 42 millimètres pour une épaisseur de 11.8 millimètres, étanche à 5 atmosphères, dispose d’une force que seule sa dose de classicisme et d’épure parvient à distiller. Le passé devient fissure qui filtre la lumière et la concentre.

Couleurs vivi!antes au-delà du cadran noir A propos de lumière, de luminosités plutôt, Mathey-Tissot offre à Eric Giroud l’occasion d’assouvir un fantasme: certaines teintes de cadrans retrouvées dans l’histoire de la marque s’imposent à lui comme autant de légitimes invitations. Des incitations même, à faire pâlir ceux qui auraient été tentés d’en revendiquer l’antériorité mais qui se heurtent à ces traces marquées du passé. Faut-il se juste se baisser pour ramasser de tels éclairages? Non, c’est plus subtil. Eric Giroud offre à cette inattendue 1886, hormis son cadran noir façon gravité des grands sages, d’incroyables dégradés de vert fumé, de marron fumé, de rouge fumé, et gris fumé et de bleu fumé.

Bien que terriblement prolifique durant les années auxquelles se réfère ce modèle, la marque Mathey-Tissot respirait toutefois la cohérence en matière de codes visuels. Eric Giroud a su les capter. Son approche est basée sur une géométrie et un rapport à la lumière très doux, dont l’effet est de rendre la 1886 plus contemporaine, plus urbaine dans ses allures, plus lifestyle que sportive dans sa rondeur et ses ouvertures. Sa couronne s’encastre sans heurts dans l’arrondi de sa lunette, son verre facial est légèrement bombé, son fond ajouré suit les mouvements du rotor d’un Sellita SW200, un calibre automatique.

Le système d’attache à boucle déployante, s’installe à l’extrémité d’un cuir italien pur jus, imprimé de motifs de type croco.

The move is a wholly legitimate one, as a perusal of last century's Journal Suisse d’Horlogerie, as well as many other trade journals, will show. The Neuchâtel brand's history is brimming with iconic models, such as the piece commissioned by Elvis Presley, the gold or silver ‘coin watch’, and finally the ‘Type 20’, whose universal aesthetics, clearly in reference to the aviator's 'tool watch', have been subject to many recent attempts at appropriation. Ultra-!ne sandblasted beauty, curvaceous lines, a contemporary nod to the 70s What goes through a designer's mind, remarkable and renowned though they may be, when they find themselves face-to-face not with just another creative briefing, but history in the making? Eric Giroud was clearly the man for the job in this instance. Maybe it's because he can handle such pressures that he can achieve the masterpiece that is the 1886. Like an architect, he refers to the 'cement' of history's building blocks. I am personally moved at the mere sight of it, and that's just the photograph currently gracing the screens over at the Mathey-Tissot offices. For me, it exudes a timeless harmony of aesthetics, the merest glimpse of which leaves me convinced that it is poised to become a modern icon.

A few days later, I was able to get hands-on experience with the 1886 collection. I must admit, I was surprised (the intention, perhaps, of the designer) at the tactile matte surfaces of the 316 L steel case and bezel. They were as if rendered smooth by an erosion as constant and inexorable as the thread of sand flowing through the neck of an hourglass, the effect was emotional. Measuring 42 mm in diameter, 11.8 mm thick and water-resistant to 5 atm, this piece displays a strength matched only by its sheer classicism and purity. The past is a crack of time through which light is filtered and distilled.

Vivid colours alleviate a solid black dial On the subject of light, or rather luminosity, Mathey-Tissot gives Eric Giroud the chance to fulfil the fantasy of a lifetime: some shades of dial seen throughout the history of the brand positively invite, if not incite, experimentation. Anyone tempted to claim anteriority even with the proof of its past existence staring them in the face, would have to think twice in this case. Does one simply tilt one's gaze to discern the play of light? No, it's a bit subtler than that. Eric Giroud has succeeded, in this unexpected version of the 1886, in creating swathes of smoky green, brown, red, grey and blue across this blackest of sober black dials.

Although tremendously prolific in the year of the model's name, the Mathey-Tissot brand nonetheless ensured a consistent visual coding. Eric Giroud has captured those codes. His approach is based on geometry and subdued plays of light, the effect being to give the 1886 a more contemporary, urban look, making it more of a lifestyle watch than a sports model with its openwork and curves. Its crown melds seamlessly into the rounded bezel, its dial crystal is slightly domed, while its back leaves open to view the movements of the rotor winding the Sellita SW200 automatic calibre. The natural Italian leather crocodile-print strap is secured by a deployant buckle system.
