From the Louise Taft Semple President/ CEO

Hello Friends,

Welcome to 2023 and to a new era at the Taft Museum of Art!

Since my arrival as the Louise Taft Semple President and CEO this past September, you all have been so warmly welcoming. I am truly honored to lead this gem of an institution as we head into our next chapter together.

It is with this spirit of community that we look to a new year of sensational exhibitions, programs, and opportunities to gather. There is truly no better place to kick off the new year and enjoy the rich cultural canvas of Cincinnati with family and friends than at the museum. This year feels especially important as we strengthen our commitment to better reflect the diversity of the community we serve.

Our first special exhibition of the year, Memories & Inspiration: The Kerry and C. Betty Davis Collection of African American Art, will be a special opportunity to engage with a very personal collection. Like the Tafts, the show’s lenders—Kerry Davis (a retired postal worker) and C. Betty Davis (a former television news producer)—created a collection and haven for art lovers within their home. This February, more than 60 of their works will be shared with the Taft, embracing a breadth and depth of 20thand 21st-century expression of Black American artists.

“I can’t imagine living without art. When I walk through our home, I don’t just see pictures on a wall. I see friends, memories, and experiences,” Mr. Davis says (The Inside Story, pages 10–11). Much like the Davises, I hope that when you visit the Taft this year, you’ll walk away experiencing not just art, but a richer connection to your own heritage.

During this time the Taft will showcase celebrated Cincinnati artist Terence Hammonds in our Sinton Gallery and throughout our historic house for his solo show, Universal Magnetic. We also eagerly anticipate the June opening of our summer exhibition, Modern Women/Modern Vision: Photography from the Bank of America Collection, highlighting the pioneering paths of female photographers.

This new year brings back our beloved members’ previews, holiday dining experiences, and musical performances, as well as Family Funday, after a two-year hiatus (page 9).

I am also elated to announce a new partnership with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, which will be collaborating with us on our 36th Duncanson Artist-inResidence. (Learn more on page 18). Summer Art Camp will return this spring for another year of in-person artmaking for kids grades kindergarten to high school in a renovated Dater Education Space. (Be sure to catch the Early Bird camp pricing this January!) Our award-winning Artists Reaching Classrooms outreach program is also underway, and we can’t wait to invite you all to join us in celebrating this year’s students at their opening exhibition. Members like you make this program possible! (Learn more on page 21.)

It is also thanks to our dedicated board of directors and staff that the museum is set up for a successful new year. I extend a heartfelt welcome to Jill T. McGruder, our new board chair. Jill has served 15 years with us and most recently led the museum’s multi-million-dollar capital campaign to preserve and protect our historic house. This new appointment comes with the utmost gratitude for Gerry Greene, who demonstrated commitment to the museum and the greater community in his decade as board chair. Both Gerry and Jill have shared their singular insights as I join the Taft community, and I look forward to continuing to partner with them—and with you all— as we embrace the future of the Taft Museum of Art.

Cheers to a bright and beautiful 2023!

Sincerely,

Rebekah (Becky) Beaulieu, PhD

THE
KERRY AND C. BETTY DAVIS COLLECTION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN ART

FIFTH THIRD GALLERY

Memories & Inspiration features selections from the private collection of Kerry and C. Betty Davis. For more than 35 years, Mr. Davis, a retired postal worker, and Mrs. Davis, a former television news producer, have collected with a focus on diverse 20th- and 21st-century approaches to the Black image. According to Mr. Davis, “Our goal is to preserve cultural memories and provide the community with a source of inspiration.” The exhibition features 62 works of art, including paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, sculptures, and mixed media by well-known African American artists Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Sam Gilliam, Loïs Mailou Jones, Jacob Lawrence, Gordon Parks, Alma Thomas, and others.

Organized and toured by International Art & Artists, Washington, DC, Memories & Inspiration provides an example of a private collection formed by a singular vision. The Davis residence has been called “a museum in a home,” offering an enlightening comparison to Charles and Anna Taft’s own collection. The Davises’ collection reveals their hopes and passions, infusing Memories & Inspiration with a tremendous personal power.

Admission is free for Taft members, guests of members with guest pass, military, and youth (18 and under); $12 for adults; $10 for seniors. Non-members save $2 by purchasing tickets online. Learn more at taftmuseum.org/Exhibitions/Memories.

THE KERRY AND C. BETTY DAVIS COLLECTION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN ART

ON THE COVER

Sedrick Ervin Huckaby (American, born 1975) She Wore Her Family’s Quilt, 2015 Oil on canvas

A woman appears deep in thought, a quilt wrapped around her shoulders. Multiple colorful quilts drape the wall in front of her. Thickly applied strokes of paint unite the woman and her surroundings. In his portraits, figure paintings, and abstract compositions, Sedrick Huckaby evokes themes of family, community, and heritage, often drawing upon quilt designs. Huckaby states, “I believe my paintings are done in a language more closely in tune with my soul than the language of my tongue.” Known mostly for his monumentally sized paintings, Huckaby here created a deeply personal moment on an intimate scale.

Born in North Carolina, Beverly Buchanan created expressive sculptures she called “shacks,” inspired by childhood memories of vernacular architecture in the rural South. This tall, narrow structure appears constructed with scraps, yet bears vibrant colors that hint at hope and resilience in the face of poverty. “I’m interested in [the shacks’] shapes and how they’re made and how they reflect the people who built them,” said Buchanan. “I consider my shacks portraits. It’s the spirit that comes through the forms.”

Monotype

Romare Bearden created collages, paintings, and prints that captured the daily lives of African Americans. Here, he chose the improvisational process of monotype as a suitable medium to portray a lively jazz quartet. Absorbed by their music, three horn players and a pianist emerge from the expressive, abstract forms. To create the monotype, Bearden painted directly onto a printing plate, laid a sheet of paper over the plate, then ran the two through a press to squeeze the paint onto the paper. The result is a one-of-a-kind image, rather than a series of multiples as produced by other printmaking techniques.

Two female welders pause during their work, the shields on their helmets lifted to reveal their faces. Gordon Parks photographed the women from a low vantage point, emphasizing their monumental and heroic stature. They were among workers at Landers, Frary & Clark in New Britain, Connecticut, which produced mounted machine guns for the war effort. During World War II, factories employed thousands of American women. These opportunities were expanded for Black women after an executive order signed in 1941 prohibited racial discrimination in the defense industry. A photographer, filmmaker, and author, Parks revealed the ravages of poverty and racism, and documented the struggle for civil rights.

THE INSIDE STORY

CONVERSATION WITH THE COLLECTORS

The special exhibition Memories & Inspiration features selections from the private collection of Kerry and C. Betty Davis. Here, the Davises share some thoughts with Taft Museum of Art Curator Tamera Lenz Muente.

TLM: How and when did you begin to collect art?

KD: I started buying art in the mid-1980s to decorate my first home. I never considered myself a collector early on—I was just buying works that pleased me. It was much later, in retrospect, that someone brought to my attention that I had assembled a cohesive body of work.

TLM: It has been noted that you collect art because of your desire to preserve cultural memories and to inspire your community. Can you elaborate on that a bit?

KD: I do have a desire to preserve these works of art created by people from the African diaspora. Many of the images reflect a sense of pride and document who we are as a people. I have a custodial responsibility to preserve these images for future generations. I also believe art is to be seen. Along our collecting journey, we have shared not only the works of art, but the artists who created them, with friends, family, parishioners, neighbors, and the community at large so they, too, can experience the myriad of emotions that these works evoke.

TLM: Tell me about your relationships with the artists in your collection. Do you have a favorite interaction you’d like to share?

KD: I know, and have known, many artists along this journey. I remember being so intimidated by how to approach artists that I read about in books or saw in the media.

To me, they seemed larger than life and unapproachable. It was the advice of my good friend, the late Mildred Thompson, that gave me the confidence that I carry even today. She said, “If these people are as great as you think they are, they will be approachable. Greatness is always approachable.” Since that day, I’ve never had any hesitation or reservation about approaching anyone for any reason.

CBD: One of my greatest joys of collecting is when we are graced with the opportunity to visit with artists in their homes, studios, or when they come to our home. During a trip to Philly we visited with Moe Brooker, a renowned African American abstract artist, educator, and printmaker (bottom right). We walked into a studio to the sound of jazz playing while Brooker painted. During our conversation, he shared two factors that have impacted his artistry: jazz and going to church. He said, “There is something important about rhythms and sounds that are relative to color that is very much part of the Black artist community.”

Many years ago we spent time with another great African American painter and lyrical abstractionist, Sam Gilliam. This was one of life’s greater pleasures. Engaging with Gilliam in his Washington, DC, studio was like being in an orchestra environment, where some pieces could be as simple and beautiful as a flute solo and as complex as the awe-inspiring sound of the full-bodied orchestra. Gilliam‘s works are rich and colorful with texture and movement. We acquired a 1974 painting during that unforgettable visit (see page 8), and he also gifted us a beautiful print.

Kerry and C. Betty Davis

TLM: Can you describe how it feels to live with these works in your own home?

CBD: Some days it feels like a museum. Each room carries its own theme which is thought-provoking, and when our works are traveling, I miss them. Art sets the stage in our home. It connects us with our ancestors and breathes inspiration, imagination, and an appreciation for those gifted creatives, some who have passed and others who are still with us today.

KD: I can’t imagine living without art. When I walk through our home, I don’t just see pictures on a wall. I see friends, memories, and experiences. We have/had relationships with most of the artists whose work is in the collection. The Jacob Lawrence drawing (right) is my most coveted work. I purchased it after my mother passed. I had worked as a carpenter for a short period, but was always a handyman. I was my mother’s handyman, and that particular work honors our relationship. It was the narrative paintings of Lawrence that got me interested in art.

TLM: Most people assume that you need to be extraordinarily wealthy to collect art. If someone asked you for advice on how to begin their own art collection, what would you tell them?

KD: I would say, “Get out and look.” Go to museums, galleries, neighborhood art centers, art fairs, internet, Instagram, university galleries, etc. Talk to others who buy art. There are several books that you can reference on art, artists, and collecting. First, buy what you like, then at some point educate that “Like.” Collecting doesn’t have to be expensive. There are several talented artists working today. Educate your eye and discover the next famous artist. Just have fun. Art is subjective: if you think it’s great, enjoy it.

UNIVERSAL MAGNETIC NEW WORKS BY TERENCE HAMMONDS

12

On view February 16–June 4, 2023

SINTON GALLERY & TAFT HISTORIC HOUSE

During the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, African Americans redoubled their long fight for equality. Their struggles and determination have inspired artist Terence Hammonds. His works in Universal Magnetic feature collages that combine historical images with decorative motifs that adorn and memorialize representations of racial identity in the United States.

For his paper collages, Hammonds incorporates illustrations of celestial bodies with images of Black and Brown figures cut from vintage magazines, such as Life, Jet, and Ebony, to create scenes that are simultaneously nostalgic and futuristic. He also recontextualizes the figures by removing them from scenes of pain and suffering and inserting them into spaces that celebrate joy and hope. While Hammonds takes the same approach to his ceramics in terms of subject matter, he uses a silkscreen process to transfer the collaged compositions onto the clay surfaces. The shape of several vessels in the exhibition, as well as his use of blue and white, is a nod to the Chinese porcelains in the Taft’s collection.

Hammonds’s work is included in the collections of the Cincinnati Art Museum, 21c Museum Hotel, the Newark Museum of Art, and the Ifö Center in Bromölla, Sweden, where his pieces form an outdoor public installation.

FAKES, FORGERIES, AND FOLLOWERS

IN THE TAFT COLLECTION

On view through February 5, 2023 SINTON GALLERY

Fakes and forgeries provide some of the most compelling stories in the art world. Did you know that, of the nearly 800 works in the Taft collection, a few possess their own mysteries of attribution—some solved and others still in question? This small exhibition will reveal the fascinating histories of selected paintings and works of decorative art normally kept in storage. Among them, portraits originally thought to be by Rembrandt van Rijn demonstrate how authenticating the great Dutch master’s paintings has evolved in the century since Charles and Anna Taft built their collection. Paintings previously believed to have been created by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya and English landscapist John Constable were later discovered to be works by their followers. Nineteenth-century carved stone plaques once masqueraded as Renaissance portraits of royalty. A pair of porcelain vases was made in France in the late 1800s rather than, as the Tafts believed, in China a century earlier. Follow along as we trace the detective work that uncovered the true identities of these works of art, many of which have not been seen by the public in more than 30 years.

Admission is free for Taft members, guests of members with guest pass, military, and youth (18 and under); $12 for adults; $10 for seniors. Non-members save $2 by purchasing tickets online. Learn more at taftmuseum.org/Exhibitions/Fakes.

Joan Hendricks, Chief Registrar and Collections Manager, and Mark Rohling, Senior Exhibition Designer and Chief Preparator, have dedicated a combined 37 years to the Taft Museum of Art (Hendricks for 16, and Rohling for 21). They will be greatly missed as they retire this winter. In looking back at her time with us, Hendricks recalled her fondest memory of the museum was “the feeling of being welcomed here on my first visit.” Rohling said the Bicentennial Infrastructure Project “gave me valuable insight into the structure of the historic house, which has helped me to solve problems as they arise.”

Thank you, Joan, and Mark—the Taft will not be the same without the two of you!

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

KAY HURLEY AND JENS ROSENKRANTZ

You have been members of the Taft since 2004. Why is membership important to you?

Belonging to the museum, especially one with such a rich history, is important to us for many reasons. It helps us be connected and up to date with what is happening. We appreciated the updates on the work being done on the house, for example. Most importantly, it is our way to support the museum, so we (and many others) can enjoy it for years to come.

You have both been involved in the Artists Reaching Classrooms (ARC) program for many years. Kay is a teaching artist and together you lend The Annex Gallery for students to display their works. Why is this a program you continue to support?

This is one of our very favorite programs the Taft offers. I (Kay) enjoy working with these high schoolers, teaching them about what a career is really like on a day-to-day basis. Seeing the hard work these kids put in to create

the beautiful pieces that are eventually displayed is a wonderful experience. I love seeing the excitement that their displayed art brings.

I (Jens) was thrilled to lend our space, The Annex Gallery at the Pendleton Art Center, last spring for the students to display their work. The ARC reception that was held in the spring was a great celebration. We were so happy to be a part of everything.

Do you have a favorite place in the museum?

Kay: I will always find myself in the Music Room. It may be my favorite place!

Jens: I can’t help but look at the watches. It is hard to pick a favorite.

2023 ARC EXHIBITION

Each year ARC immerses high school art students in Cincinnati‘s visual arts community and exposes them to careers in the arts through studio visits and other field trips. We invite you to celebrate this special program and the students’ future careers in the arts with their very own curated gallery show, on view at The Annex Gallery March 23–April 28.

Stay tuned for exhibition hours at taftmuseum.org/Events.

Artists Reaching Classrooms is made possible in part by state tax dollars allocated by the Ohio Legislature to the Ohio Arts Council (OAC).
