From the Louise Taft Semple President/ CEO
Hello Friends,
As we approach the end of a magnificent year of exploration, education, and collaboration, this season of celebration feels that much more abundant and exciting!
With the support of you, our community, we have integrated our new institutional plan, broadened our role as a leading Cincinnati arts hub, and have made significant strides toward increasing our presence nationwide (see updates on each pillar of the plan at right)! With the expansion of our Duncanson Artist-in-Residence program, our certification (through Kulture City) as a sensory-friendly venue, unique special exhibitions, new creative partnerships, and more, we have had a wonderful and memorable year with much to look forward to in 2025.
To close this year, we will bring two new special exhibitions to Fifth Third Gallery and the collection galleries this October: Posing Beauty in African American Culture, highlighting works by Black photographers and the relationship of African American beauty and culture, and Resilience: New Ceramic Works by Terri Kern, highlighting nature-inspired ceramic works by local artist Terri Kern.
In addition, we have a stellar lineup of festive celebrations for you and your loved ones to enjoy! New to the museum this year, we invite you to experience our special holiday installation in partnership with Over-the-Rhine’s creative reuse center, Indigo Hippo. Holiday Traditions Old and New will pair our traditional dining room set for New Year’s Day tea with a display in the collection galleries celebrating sustainability.
Alongside these new holiday happenings, we will welcome back our Holiday Tea Series and our free Holiday Family Fundays, which are themed celebrations for German Christmas, Festive Folk, and Hanukkah!
I hope to see you around the museum and the city this season and look forward to an exciting new year of sharing art, history, and festive experiences.
With gratitude,
Rebekah (Becky) Beaulieu, PhD

POSING BEAUTY IN AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURE
On view October 5, 2024–January 12, 2025
FIFTH THIRD GALLERY AND TAFT HISTORIC HOUSE
Posing Beauty in African American Culture traces the relationship between African American beauty and visual culture from the 1890s to the present through documentary, commercial, and fine art photography. Documentary photographs and portraits of Black Americans—some celebrities, some ordinary citizens— present the public face of African American beauty, while commercial photographs demonstrate how fashion and advertising have constructed beauty standards. Finally, contemporary photographers—some of whom use themselves as a subject— encourage consideration of how images of beauty impact mass culture and individuals.
Posing Beauty includes more than 100 works by photographers including Charles “Teenie” Harris, Leonard Freed, Anthony Barboza, Carrie Mae Weems, Hank Willis Thomas, Sheila Pree Bright, Renee Cox, Mickalene Thomas, and others. Organized by Curatorial Exhibitions and curated by Deborah Willis, PhD, one of the nation’s leading historians of African American photography and culture, the exhibition will challenge existing notions of beauty while encouraging consideration of race, class, and gender within art and popular culture.
EXHIBITION SPONSOR
Admission is free for Taft members, military, youth (17 and under), and FotoFocus passholders; $15 for adults; $12 for seniors. Save on tickets when you buy online. Admission is free on Sundays and Mondays! For more information and a full list of events visit taftmuseum.org/Exhibitions.

RESILIENCE NEW CERAMIC WORKS BY TERRI KERN
On view October 12, 2024–February 16, 2025
SINTON GALLERY AND TAFT HISTORIC HOUSE
What does nature teach us about the ability to embrace, resist, or recover from life’s challenges?
Local ceramic artist Terri Kern explores the theme of resilience in her latest creations.
Inspired by the natural world, her symbolic works of art tell stories of love, loss, triumph, and hardship: tiny portraits dangle from the mouths of dragons; birds cautiously perch upon spools of thread; cages enclose empty swings. For the pieces in this exhibition, Kern also sought inspiration from a variety of objects in the Taft Museum of Art’s collection, including Chinese porcelains, Italian maiolica, and European portrait miniatures.
Using wheel throwing and hand building techniques, Kern decorates her intimate narrative works, made from white earthenware, with layers of colors, creating vibrant glazed surfaces. Her award-winning ceramics have been featured in numerous publications and are held in public and private collections throughout the United States, Europe, and Asia. Kern’s works have also been exhibited internationally, including shows in China, Japan, and Germany.

In addition to more than 100 works in the Fifth Third Gallery, the Taft Museum of Art’s fall exhibition, Posing Beauty in African American Culture, will highlight photographs installed alongside works in the Taft collection galleries. One of these works— Jean-Baptiste Belley (left) by Senegalese photographer Omar Victor Diop—will hang in the Taft’s Music Room next to a portrait by 18th-century English artist Thomas Gainsborough (center), encouraging conversation about how contemporary art can explore beauty in relationship to art of the past.
In his series Diaspora, Diop—employing himself as model—revisits portraits of Black figures who fought for freedom and liberty centuries ago. Diop’s subject, Belley (right), was born in Senegal and enslaved in the French colony of Saint-Domingue as a child. Upon enlisting in the French army, Belley was granted his freedom. He later participated in the 1794 convention that abolished slavery in French territories. See Diop’s photograph and others in dialogue with paintings throughout the Taft collection galleries.

Charles “Teenie” Harris, Mary Louise Harris on Mulford Street, Homewood, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Charles “Teenie” Harris photographed Mary Louise Harris in the African American neighborhood of Homewood in Pittsburgh. Standing on a curb next to a gleaming automobile, the woman is dressed in the height of 1930s fashion, including gloves and a jauntily cocked hat. As a photographer for the influential Black newspaper the Pittsburgh Courier, Charles “Teenie” Harris chronicled daily African American life from the 1930s through the 1970s.

MYSTERY AND BENEVOLENCE
MASONIC AND ODD FELLOWS FOLK ART
On view February 1–May 11, 2025
FIFTH THIRD GALLERY
Through compelling and cryptic works of art, Mystery and Benevolence brings to light the histories, symbolism, and beliefs of the Freemasons and the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows (IOOF)—two fraternal organizations with deep roots in American history. For decades, members across the country have come together to socialize, help others, and improve themselves and their communities. Textiles, regalia, sculptures, prints, and works of decorative art provide a glimpse into the enigmatic world of these secret societies.
Mystery and Benevolence was organized by the American Folk Art Museum, New York, NY, from the Kendra and Allan Daniel Collection and is toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC. Learn more at taftmuseum.org/Exhibitions.

Almost 400 people donned their best fascinators and fashions in support of A Race to the Taft, our 2024 Kentucky Derby–themed annual fundraising gala. The event grossed over $305,000, breaking an all-time museum fundraiser record! Funds raised from the gala help support the Taft’s many free educational programs such as Art for All, Artists Reaching Classrooms, and Family Fundays.
“The Taft Museum of Art provides crucial educational resources to schools, teachers, and students throughout the greater Cincinnati region each year. The museum’s annual gala in large part supports this critical work, developing the next generation of lifelong learners and creative leaders.”
–John Lawrence, Gala Co-Chair and Board of Trustees member
Guests celebrated by sipping mint juleps, enjoying southerninspired fare by Jeff Thomas Catering, dancing to lively selections by DJ Natalie Jones, and savoring the different bourbons at the barrel bar provided by Northside Distilling Co. SPOTLIGHT
Emily Reinhold
Visitor Experience & Events Associate
Meet Emily! When you arrive at the museum and enter our café or Museum Shop, you’ll likely see Emily Reinhold’s friendly face. As Visitor Experience & Events Associate at the Taft, she wears many hats, one of which is welcoming and assisting guests! In addition to her role on our Visitor Experience team, Emily assists our Events Coordinator in making each event happen the way our partners and clients envision them.
A Cincinnati native, Emily currently attends the University of Cincinnati’s (UC) College of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning, majoring in art history with a legal studies minor. Following her time at UC she plans to attend law school to study cultural heritage and art law. Emily’s favorite work in our collection is Changing Pasture by Anton Mauve, because of “his soft interpretation of the Dutch countryside.”
We are so grateful to have Emily as part of our team. Say “Hi” when you see her around the museum!
