Interviewed by Warren Smart Elizabeth Knox is the author of thirteen novels, and a collection of Elizabeth Knox essays. Her best known are The Vintner’s Luck, Dreamhunter and Dreamquake. Latest were Mortal Fire (finalist in the LA Times Book Awards) and the horror/science fiction, Wake. When Malcolm and Melanie started ecostore in 1993 they had a dream to create a healthier more sustainable world and set a new model of how to fund a foundation, Fairground. They created ecostore, a leading range of healthier, eco friendlier household cleaners, body care and baby products with a focus on looking after the health and wellbeing of people as well as the planet. The Fairground Foundation looks at the hardest problems facing us today including city housing and our disappearing native wildlife and sets up social enterprises to solve them Sun, 2pm, Te Paepae Stage Interviewed by Alessandra Keighley Encouraged by her neighbour Salif Keita to sing with Bamako’s Super Rail Band, Inna Modja has gone on to craft her own unique style, mixing Desert Blues and Hiphop, becoming one of the most important Malian contemporary artists on the international scene. Her lyrics often focus on highlighting an injustice or an iniquity; she regularly speaks out against female genital mutilation and domestic violence and is an inspiring figurehead not just for feminism but also for all humanity. POETRY SLAM THE JUDGES Poet, MC, Comedienne, Actor, Social “Poetry is to life, what lights and music Commentator, TV are to the stage” - Charles Dickens. Presenter, Improviser, and Poetry Slams don’t leave poems on a page but bring them to sweaty, funny, moving, compelling, hysterical and captivating life. all round show off Penny Ashton will be hosting and judging this inaugural competition of prose. Penny Penny Ashton As part of the World of Words programme, we’re has represented NZ both in a celebrating the written and spoken word – poetry slam poetry tour of the UK and at the included! Come check out the inaugural WOMAD World Championships of Theatre sports in Germany. Her poetry slam which will see WOMADers solo Jane Austen musical Promise and Promiscuity has compete to win the title of Slam Champ! been performed over 200 times from Saskatchewan to Stewart Island. Penny is also a commentator on RNZ’s the Panel, Newstalk’s The Huddle and Breakfast TV. Ranked 4th in the world at the 2014 Women of the World Poetry Slam, Carrie Rudzinski has taught Spoken Word courses at California State University Northridge and Manukau Institute of Technology. Featured in Bustle, Huffington Post, and Teen Vogue, she has performed her work in 5 countries and almost all 50 of the United States. Mohamed Hassan is a poet, podcast producer and journalist at Radio New Zealand. He is a TEDx speaker, co-founder of the Waxed Poetic Revival, and the 2015 National Poetry Slam Champion. Last year he was NZ’s first representative at the Individual World Poetry Slam in Arizona, where he ranked 23rd in the world, and released his first collection of poetry ‘A Felling of Things’.

THE SCHEDULE

Saturday

Seven poets will perform original poems of 3 minutes or less in two round competitions for an audience and judging panel. Up for grabs is the title of WOMAD Slam champ and 2 x 3 day VIP WOMAD 2018 tickets! The audience will play an important role in cheering on the poets and attempting to sway the judges’ scores, so come along to join in on the cheering! Poets will be judged on: - execution - content - audience response

Sunday

The WOMAD slam champ will perform their winning piece followed by a slam session from our world renowned judges and seasoned slammers Penny Ashton, Carrie Rudzinski and Mohamed Hassan. Expect to be surprised and mesmerised by their bevvy of ballads, scandalous stanzas and rhythmic rhymes.
