WOMAD’s wordsmiths bring their hypnotic rhymes to life in a battle to find the best poet at the festival! Expect a celebration of beats, verse, quips and rhythms in this symphony of spoken word. As a part of the World of Words programme, Poetry Slam will delight with downright epic performers in the spotlight. WOMAD audience members play an important role in the judges’ scoring - so get along and cheer on this poetic marathon.

The slam schedule Sat, 4pm, Kunming Stage Sun, 4pm, Kunming Stage Poetic festival goers will belt out their best original stanzas in the hope of being crowned the WOMAD Slam Champ. Also up for grabs are two, three-day VIP WOMAD 2020 tickets! Poets will be judged on: • Execution • Content • Audience response The WOMAD Slam Champ will perform their winning piece, Photo: Charlotte Curd followed by a slam session from our world renowned judges and seasoned slammers Penny Ashton, Dominic “Tourettes” Hoey and Sonya Renee Taylor! Expect to be surprised and mesmerised by their moments of lyrical genius, their passionate prose and their rhythmic rhymes.

The judges Penny Ashton Penny Ashton is New Zealand’s own global comedienne who has been making a splash on the world stage since 2002. She has performed more than 600 solo shows and has sold out from Edinburgh to Adelaide to Edmonton. She has represented both New Zealand in The World Cup of Theatresports in Germany, and Australasia in a Performance Poetry Slam Tournament Tour of the UK. Dominic “Tourettes” Hoey Dominic Hoey, better known as Tourettes has crafted five critically acclaimed studio albums, written two books, a novel, four short films and a one-man show. As well as being an author and a musician, Dominic is a slampoetry champion who has performed in Australia, Europe, England, Japan and America. Sonya Renee Taylor Sonya Renee Taylor is an author, poet, spoken word artist, speaker, social justice activist, educator, and founder of The Body is Not An Apology movement. She has won multiple international poetry slams, and is a transformational leader who enlightens and inspires audiences everywhere from boardrooms and universities, to prisons and homeless shelters.
