We extend a warm welcome to you all. “The purpose of art is to wash the dust of daily life off our souls……” — Pablo Picasso So too is the purpose of music. A warm welcome to all of our wonderful WOMADers! To those of you who are joining us for the first time - woohoo, yay, you finally made it. To our beloved regular WOMADers who make the annual pilgrimage - we love you guys, welcome back! By the end of this weekend may you all feel like the dust of your daily life has been washed from your soul, and replaced with the incredible sense of celebration, creativity and community that WOMAD is known for. We are delighted to have you all at the 15th edition of WOMAD in Taranaki. Nestled under the watchful gaze of our majestic maunga Taranaki, and housed in the stunning Brooklands Park and the TSB Bowl of Brooklands, WOMAD truly is an event like no other, in a venue like no other! Our modern lifestyles are jam-packed with work, family, and general day-to-day commitments, and sometimes we need a bit of escapism. Our goal is to sprinkle the landscape with experiences that exist beyond our own, and our hope is that everyone at WOMAD will discover something new that moves them. For three days you can immerse yourself in a culture where you will discover new things, enjoy the things you love, and fill your senses with the sights and sounds of music and dance from far-flung pockets of the world. In this, the International Year of Indigenous Languages, the language of this land welcomes the languages of the world to Taranaki. WOMAD continues to embrace Te Reo Māori and weaves it into the festival environment. Keep an eye out for the bilingual signage around the site, pop into Te Paepae and have a go at learning the lingo and don’t forget to check out the Teach Me Te Reo section on the Womad app. This year’s WOMAD is going to be a dizzy cocktail of exhilarating Emere Wano Event Director & NZ Programme Manager, WOMAD NZ

experiences for all. From the upbeat afropsychedelic party vibes to the quiet moments of reflection and meditation featuring cellos, bagpipes and voices, WOMAD truly is the world’s festival. This year’s musical line-up sizzles with an eclectic mix of international and New Zealand artists, including a couple of talented Taranaki locals. Artists from countries as varied as Benin, Belgium, Ireland, Wales, Mexico and Greece will share their cultures, identities and heritage, while telling ancient, joyous and powerful tales through traditional and modern performances. For the ultimate WOMAD experience seek out one of this year’s exciting WOMAD firsts. The Craft Master Series is one of our new features. It’s an opportunity to learn the skills and techniques of jewellery making, and take something beautiful home with you to treasure forever. We’ve teamed up with The Jewel and the Jeweller to offer this inaugural workshop series. You can check it out in the Global Village Art and Craft area. The Kunming Garden plays host to the World of Words stage, which for the first time includes speakers and late night comedy. Get along to the Pagoda Bar for a gin or champagne cocktail (or if cocktails aren’t your thing you can grab a craft beer or a glass of fine wine) and enjoy the beauty of this revamped space. Grab a book from one of our World of Words authors from the WOStore and get it signed at the WITT Recharge Zone. Pack a smile, bring a blanket and enjoy refreshments in stylish chill out areas, watch a cooking demonstration or explore the stalls and workshops. The kids will be entertained at Kidzone with workshops especially for them spread over the weekend. There are plenty of things on site to discover — so soak up the joyous warmth of the WOMAD vibe. Finally, on behalf of the Board and Staff of WOMAD NZ, we offer a massive shout out to all of our partners for their incredible support. Kia ora and a very warm welcome to WOMAD 2019! From Ireland to India and Morocco to Mexico, this year’s Festival has artists from across the world plus some great home-grown talent. I’m looking forward to discovering new music and celebrating different cultures. Each year we don’t think it can get any better and then my family and I, leave with huge smiles on our faces. WOMAD and New Plymouth have been an incredible success story. This year is the 15th anniversary of the festival coming to what has become a perfect setting for the event, the TSB Bowl of Brooklands in our stunning Pukekura Park. It’s home to our Summer at the Bowl programme with Angus and Julia Stone still to come in this iconic 15,000-strong natural amphitheatre later this month. WOMAD’s continued success is down to the strength of the partnerships between private and public organisations, who have worked so effectively since 2005 in creating one of the best outdoor festivals in the world. This includes NPDC as a host city, corporate partners and working with the great people at TAFT. In New Plymouth, we’re building what we like to think is the Lifestyle Capital of New Zealand. While you are here, take the chance to explore the rest of our district. The WOMAD story Kōrero tuku iho WOMAD WOMAD is a celebration. A celebration of talented artists, of diverse cultures, of worldly flavours, and of the transformative power of music.

“Music is a universal language. It draws people together and proves, as well as anything, the stupidity of racism.”

The internationally acclaimed and award-winning event is one of the longest running cultural festivals on the planet, bringing together artists from all over the globe to celebrate, educate, inform and inspire.

Creating awareness of the worth and potential of a multicultural society has always been a core intention of WOMAD, and that ethos is more important than ever before, WOMAD Global Festival Director Chris Smith says.

Since its premiere in the UK in 1982 WOMAD has held more than 250 festivals, creating events in 27 countries and islands all over the world, including places such as Abu Dhabi, Japan, Singapore, Chile, South Africa, and Sicily, just to name a few. Renowned artist and humanitarian Peter Gabriel first dreamt of WOMAD nearly 40 years ago. It grew out of his pure enthusiasm for music from around the world and an authentic desire to offer an international platform to the non-western artists he loved. To him WOMAD festivals are “wonderful and unique occasions” that allow millions of people around the globe to hear the messages and enjoy the talent of intriguing artists they would otherwise not see. “The festivals have allowed many different audiences to gain an insight into cultures other than their own, through the enjoyment of music,” Peter says.

“At a time when the world seems to becoming less tolerant and more fearful, WOMAD has never been stronger as a force promoting the arts and intercultural understanding,” Chris says. Since 2003 that powerful force of WOMAD has been at home in the stunning TSB Bowl of Brooklands, a venue which helps make the event one of the best WOMAD festivals in the world, Chris says. “Everyone at WOMAD is very grateful to our supporters and partners in New Plymouth for making WOMAD the number one festival in New Zealand, and part of the cultural landscape of this amazing country.” This year is the 15th anniversary of WOMAD NZ being held at the stunning TSB Bowl of Brooklands and Brooklands Park in New Plymouth.

What's new Ngā mea hou Kunming Garden Pagoda Bar

The Pagoda Bar’s gin and champagne cocktails, fine wines and craft beers are a perfect accompaniment to another new feature of the Kunming Garden — the World of Words programme, which for the first time includes late night comedy sessions from some of New Zealand’s best comedians - Penny Ashton and Michèle A’Court. The sustainable and wellness stalls that were previously housed in the Kunming Garden have been given two new locations. The Village of Wellness has a new home in the Pinetum, and the sustainable stalls are located in the walkway between OMV Taste the World and the Gables Stage.

The gorgeous Kunming Garden is transformed into a bustling hive of activity. This charming area has been given an exciting revamp, and it’s now the home of an upmarket new festival feature, the Pagoda Bar.

Craft Masters Series A WOMAD NZ first! We’ve teamed up with The Jewel and the Jeweller to deliver the inaugural Craft Master Series. The Jewel and the Jeweller will host 45 minute workshops at WOMAD where you learn the technique and skill of jewellery making. WOMAD has a long and successful history of being eco-friendly. This year we’ve teamed up with TSB to bring you access to FREE water at the TSB Wai Water refill stations. Either bring your own non-glass, empty water bottle or purchase a reusable one on site. If you forget your bottle visit the TSB Wai Water stall and grab yourself a new reusable bottle with cool chilled still or sparkling water. The reusable globelets, now an established WOMAD staple will be available for purchase from any of the bars. WOMAD goes bilingual

To celebrate the ultimate cultural experience, make sure you visit Te Paepae workshops at WOMAD. Visit the Teach me Te Reo page on the official WOMAD app; simply click on the speaker icons to learn the correct pronunciation of kupu (words) like ‘Taranaki’ and ‘Tau kē! (Awesome!), spoken in the Taranaki dialect. There will also be a sprinkling of bilingual signage used in print and on our digital platforms.

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa and WOMAD are striving to bring more Te Reo to the festival.

You can use the app to build your own personal itinerary by adding performances and workshops to your schedule. Then you’ll get notifications 15 minutes before they start. AMJAD ALI KHAN (INDIA) Amjad Ali Khan is one of the undisputed masters of the music world. Born to sarod maestro Haafiz Ali Khan, Amjad is widely credited with re-inventing the technique of playing the sarod. Performing as a trio with his sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, both renowned sarod players themselves, their music is an exhilarating blend between East and West.

ANGELIQUE KIDJO (BENIN) In 1980 Talking Heads’ Remain in Light album, heavily influenced by the music of West Africa, caught the attention of a young Angelique Kidjo in Paris. Hearing it again years later sparked the idea of a full circle deconstruction that seemed only natural. Using Afrobeat horns and percussion, and infusing the lyrics with new meaning, Grammy Award-winning Angelique brings her stunning twist on a classic album to WOMAD in March.

BALOJI (DR CONGO / BELGIUM) Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo but raised in Belgium, Baloji is a musician, film director and innovative artist. He infuses his heady cocktail of futuristic funk with soul, rap and Congolese soukous with a poetic political punch, that will appeal not only to your feet, but your head and heart as well.

DONA ONETE (BRAZIL) Known as the Grande Dame of Amazonian Song, Dona Onete released her debut album when she turned 73 in 2014 — yet she’s been singing all her life. Dona Onete is a vivacious storyteller who joyously sings of love, sex and her life in the Amazon. Her sound is a unique twist on Carimbo, a blend of rhythms from native Brazilians, African slaves and the Caribbean.

JAMIE SMITH’S MABON (WALES) Jamie Smith was brought up playing Welsh folk tunes, but quickly embraced traditional sounds from all the Celtic countries. Celebrating two decades of creating irresistible Celtic-inspired roots music, these are joyful, imaginative and bold tunes that are designed to move you.

JANIS CLAXTON DANCE (UNITED KINGDOM) “POP-UP DUETS (fragments of love)” is a series of exquisite contemporary dance duets designed for public spaces and ‘accidental audiences’. Borne of a desire by the late, award-winning choreographer Janis Claxton to make dance less intimidating, four dancers perform fleeting, romantic and playful duets, each centred around a different aspect of a relationship.

KORA (AOTEAROA / NEW ZEALAND) Regarded as one of New Zealand’s most electric and sonically powerful live bands, Kora are back to wow this WOMAD. The five-piece band is known for their huge live presence, with vocal harmonies that sail on a powerhouse rhythm section. This diverse and energetic group fuse elements of reggae, rock, dub, roots and funk.

LA DAME BLANCHE (CUBA) Singer, flutist and percussionist La Dame Blanche grew up in a strong musical family, her father is Jesus ‘Aguaje’ Ramos, trombonist extraordinaire and the artistic director of the Buena Vista Social Club. She moved to Paris to seek her own identity, exploring a world of sound and offers an explosive mix of hiphop, cumbia, dancehall and reggae.

LAS CAFETERAS (MEXICO / USA) Las Cafeteras fuse Afro-Mexican, hip-hop, folk and First Nations rhythms into songs of activism and celebration. Generating a genre-bending sound and electric live performance with four versatile vocalists, their lyrically rich storytelling shares the hidden stories of migrant life in Los Angeles.

MAARJA NUUT & RUUM (ESTONIA)

MAALEM HAMID EL KASRI (MOROCCO) The guembri is a distinctive instrument, a three-stringed bass lute found most in gnawa, the North African music of former black slaves. In the hands of Hamid El Kasri, the guembri travels the range of emotions, from mournful and melancholic to uplifting and celebrative. And as his fingers pick out their complex melodies, his deep, sonorous voice widens the emotion palette even further. Music that appears on the surface to be simple in fact boasts many layers and hidden depths. While Hamid is a maâlem, a master-musician charged with protecting a particular style, he also regularly shows ambition above and beyond, having collaborated with Austrian jazz legend Joe Zawinul, raï superstar Khaled and Justin Adams. He is a man at the peak of his powers.

The entrancing duo of Maarja Nuut & Ruum (Hendrik Kaljujärv) synthesises the soul of things; past, present and future. Playing with the murky zone between light and shadow, Maarja’s vocal experimentation, violin and looper complement Ruum’s abstract electronic soundscapes and envelop the listener. The Quietus called their 2018 collaboration “one of the year’s most beautiful journeys through inner and outer space”.

MY BABY (NETHERLANDS / NEW ZEALAND) This Amsterdam-based trio play roots-driven hypnotic dance music. Without using computers or samples, they are purveyors of a grooveheavy amalgam of swampy blues, dirty funk, EDM and general psychedelic freakery. With over 400 shows on four continents under their belts during the past three years alone, they are a commanding live force that easily sustains the “organic, building energy of the tribal gatherings they reference so often in their music” (Counterfeit Magazine).

MC TALI (AOTEAROA / NEW ZEALAND) New Zealand’s most famous drum and bass export MC Tali has become a prolific artist in the international electronic scene. Originally from a dairy farm in Taranaki, this multi award-winning MC is a fiercely talented freestyler and a soulful singer who has worked her magic with some of the biggest names in the drum and bass scene and toured the world several times over as both an MC and with a live band.

NADIA REID (AOTEAROA / NEW ZEALAND) Nadia Reid has attained global success and claimed her place as one of the most evocative and profound young songwriters of the decade. With a richness of voice, a depth of emotion and wisdom beyond her years, Billboard Magazine has hailed her as the voice “saving folk music.”

NIKO NE ZNA (AOTEAROA / NEW ZEALAND) Niko Ne Zna are a high-octane nine-piece musical extravaganza filled with wildly infectious rhythms and beautiful hypnotic melodies. It will be very hard to resist the urge to move and groove when this band starts playing their captivating original music, alongside beloved tunes from the Romani-soaked Balkan States.

REBETIEN (GREECE) Rebetien performs songs mostly derived from the Rebetiko and the Greek traditional music repertoire, as well as compositions of their own. SHANTEL & BUCOVINA CLUB ORKESTAR (GERMANY)

DJ, singer, musician and producer Shantel has been breaking down musical and cultural barriers for 30 years; taking things out of their usual context and putting them into new ones. He injects gypsy brass and Balkan music into modern electronica, along with dub reggae, Turkish melodies and Viennese waltzes. By tracing his Romanian family lines and avoiding the path of the ‘photocopy DJ’ he delivers catchy, unpredictable global pop music.

SHARON SHANNON BAND (IRELAND) This genre-defying accordion player has released 12 solo albums and from an early age was immersed in music, growing up with an all performing family in rural Ireland. She joined her first band at the age of eight and her first overseas tour at 14. It was joining The Waterboys in the late 1980s that ignited her career — her first solo album released shortly thereafter became the highest selling record by a traditional artist.

TAIWU ANCIENT BALLADS TROUPE SONA JOBARTEH (THE GAMBIA)

(TAIWAN)

Sona Jobarteh is the first professional female virtuoso of the Kora (21-stringed African harp) to come from a West African Griot family. A pioneer in a male-dominated, 700-year-old hereditary tradition, she is a remarkable instrumentalist and singer. Jobarteh’s eclectic and intoxicating style has triggered international success and in 2018 she was awarded the prestigious Africa Festival Artist of the Year.

It started with the visionary passion of teacher Camake Valaule and five students from Taiwu Elementary School, to document, perform and hold high the traditional songs of the Paiwan tribal villages. So far the troupe, now an 18-strong choir with band, has unveiled over 40 ancient songs that deal with love, work and ceremonies. They have been described as making “heavenly music that allows one to see the mountains and hear the breeze”.

One of WOMAD NZ’s most beloved performers of all time are coming back to wow us with their trademark sound of unique, genre-mashing alternative pop. The Correspondents – singer Mr Bruce and producer Chucks - create hi-octane, genreblending dance music. Mr Bruce scats rapidly and dances as though his life depends on it, whilst Chucks takes the audience on a journey through a smorgasbord of genres; from jazz and blues to electro and drum ‘n’ bass. THE ORIGINAL GYPSIES (FRANCE) The Original Gypsies, featuring key founding members of the celebrated ‘80s group, The Gypsy Kings, are reunited after more than 20 years. WOMAD is a festival that appeals to all ages. The festival caters to the young, the young at heart, and everyone in between. To make the festival experience more enjoyable and accessible, WOMAD provides elevated seating for over 65 seniors and wheelchair platforms at the three main stages – the TSB Bowl stage, the Todd Energy Brooklands stage and the Gables stage. These mini grandstands are supervised by helpful WOMAD volunteers. Volunteers are there to make sure things run smoothly, please follow their instructions so everyone has an enjoyable and safe time. Look out for the logo on the map for the location of the Over 65's Platforms. RNZ Bag Drop The RNZ music team will be on site again with a free Bag Drop*. They’ll also have photos, live sessions, stories and reviews at rnz.co.nz/womad throughout the festival. * Please note bags must be collected by 10.30pm each night. Site artists & installations Wāhi kai hanga toi The Golden Bearing In association with artist Reuben Paterson and Govett Brewster Art Gallery The hand-sculpted, gold glittered tree invites reflection on people’s magical relationships with nature in the seemingly natural, yet man-made, landscape of Brooklands Park. It questions what is artificial, real, or imagined. Artist Reuben Paterson (b.1973, Auckland; Ngāti Rangitihi, Ngāi Tūhoe, Scottish) found inspiration for this work in Taranaki’s gardens of national significance as Artist in Residence in 2015. Now part of the Govett-Brewster’s collection, The Golden Bearing combines this local inspiration with the mythology of trees and his Māori heritage as a reference point to navigate toward and from during the festival.

Janis Claxton Dance Based in Edinburgh and touring internationally, Janis Claxton Dance is a multi-award winning company with a reputation for bringing high quality works to new and diverse audiences. The company has performed to widespread critical acclaim in Edinburgh Zoo, Scotland’s National Museums and Galleries, and at the Edinburgh International Science Festival. Receiving 5-star reviews POP-UP Duets (fragments of love) was listed as one of the top dance works of 2016 in The Observer, it won multiple international awards, and has been recreated for the Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival in Taiwan.

WOMAD’s iconic flags are the brainchild of award-winning UK artist Angus Watt. The elegant creations are a feature of WOMAD festivals around the globe and are handmade with Japanese silk. Inspired by a landscape of flags in South Africa in the early 1990s, Angus creates the flags to help transform open, empty spaces into spectacular sights. “They are really just great big abstract paintings, painted in the sky, using the wind and the sun,” he says. The bewitching combination of colour and movement becomes an irresistible sight at music festivals.

These larger than life crosswords are a perfect way to have a quiet moment at the festival, or to battle your friends to see who has to buy the next round of mouthwatering food from the Global Village. “The flags get worn and they get a lot of sun – the colours change and I re-use the fabrics and reintroduce them with other colours, so you have more control over the level of palette,” Angus says. “There’s so many in-between colours that some don’t have any names.”

Zero Waste is all about planning for the future and caring for the environment now, so that our future generations can also enjoy our beautiful world. Each year we continue to beat the last. In 2017 we stopped 84 per cent of festival waste from ending up in the landfill and in 2018 this was increased to 90% of festival waste diverted from landfill. We won’t stop there though! Our ultimate goal is to become a festival that has zero waste going to landfill.

All of the food and drink products sold at WOMAD are served in recyclable, reusable or compostable containers. During the festival our Zero Waste stations are managed by a team of friendly educators, who will help you compost and recycle as much of your waste as possible. By doing this you enable us to achieve our goal of minimising any waste going to the landfill. Zero Waste is easy! Check out the newly revamped Todd Energy Zero Waste stations.

In recognition of 2019 being the International Year of Indigenous Languages, WOMAD continues to embrace Aotearoa’s uniqueness in the world through the integration of Te Reo Māori, Māori language into the festival environment. Keep an eye out for the bilingual signage around the site, and pop in for a visit to the Tui Ora Manaaki Lounge to have a go at learning the language or have a conversation with our Kaumātua (Elders). Whanau Ora Manaaki Lounge Māori Games — Hākinakina Join the Tui Ora team for traditional Māori games and action. Test your dexterity, learn new skills while having healthy fun. Appropriate for all ages and abilities. Fri 5.30pm, 7.15pm, 9.15pm Sat 11.30am Sun 11.30am Kaumātua kōrero — Whānau Ora So what’s it all about? Come and hear about whānau ora and why it matters to all of us, connecting language, culture, health and wellbeing. Questions about Taranaki, its people, its language and customs. Reflect with us and help create a taonga for the community. Or come along and join in the Teach me Reo sessions which will be an opportunity to learn basic Māori words and phrases. Sat 1pm, Sun 1pm Kaitiakitanga in Action — Māra kai ki Kātere/ Community Garden Glen Skipper is a local māra kai expert who is of Ngāti Tāwhirikura hapū descent. He is the driving force behind development and maintenance of the Māra ki Kātere community gardens - Te Moeone. Glen will talk about the reconnection of Ngāti Tāwhirikura hapū to their turangawaewae as they express and explore their kaitiakitanga through developing and implementing māra kai and other related initiatives aimed at restoring their social and environmental wellbeing. In these presentations he will focus on kūmara one of the main staple crops in Aotearoa from its beginnings the tipu (shoots). Sat 3pm, Sun 3pm

Aotearoa isn't as clean and green as we like to think. In fact, we rank 10th in the developed world for being most wasteful. We currently throw away 2.5 million tonnes of rubbish every year, wasting huge areas of land and filling the oceans with plastic. It never used to be this way and the New Plymouth District recently decided to go zero waste by 2050 so how do we get there? A Māori zero waste program called Para Kore is tackling this problem working with marae, kura, events and organisations. Come join our Taranaki kaiārahi Tuhi-Ao Bailey and her team for an informative kōrero and get your hands busy making upcycled t-shirt bags, a stick fork, toothbrush and cup, and eco toothpaste, deodorant and shampoo. Te Pae Taumatua Virtual pōwhiri Walk with us and experience a pōwhiri (traditional welcome) as if you were there on the marae. Hear the call of the karanga, listen to the whaikōrero (speeches) and waiata (songs). This 360 degree virtual pōwhiri is a cultural experience like no other! BCUC, from the buzzing township of Soweto, taps into the elusiveness of the spirit world of ancestors by which they are inspired. The Africa portrayed by BCUC is not poor, but rich in tradition, rituals and beliefs. This high-energy workshop will focus on the traditional rhythms of South Africa and the use of music as a weapon of change.

Join beatmaker Marc ‘Babylotion’ Damblé as he composes, records, mixes and masters a beat live in front of the audience. Marc will give you an intriguing insight into the band’s tricks, and offer tips on the art of electronic music production. The whole chain of modern electronic music production process will be broken down and analysed — from the style, to the tempo, the harmony, the recording, the mixing and the mastering. Taiwu Ancient Ballads Troupe Young and Old, Hand in Hand — Paiwan Dancing It’s time to join in, relish and stomp to the beat of ancient songs! Paiwan are the indigenous people of Taiwan, whose beautiful traditional dancing is characterised by the holding of hands while singing resonantly. This workshop will be led by the founder and artistic director, Camake Valaule, who will be joined onstage by all 15 singers from the Taiwu Ancient Ballads Troupe. Congress of Animals Collaborative Songwriting Congress of Animal’s workshop will delve into the process of collaborative songwriting — writing songs with your mates with no agenda and what that means these days. The workshop will explore original songwriting, both independently and collectively and the pros and cons of each. Maalem Hamid El Kasri A master musician with a profound talent for complex melodies will teach you some of the rhythms of the Gnaoua People of Morocco and Algeria. With a guembri lute in hand Maalem Hamid El Kasri will perform for, and with, the audience, while weaving together stories about Gnaoua instruments and Gnaoua traditions. Team Azucar Dance Movement Zumba Dance Party Start Sunday off with a bang! Join Team Azucar Dance for a Zumba dance session, the Latin inspired dance fitness classes that have taken over the globe. Jamie Smith’s Mabon Meet the Band Enjoy witty banter, instructive outbursts and a relaxed rustle through some of the more sedate musical offerings of Jamie Smith’s Mabon. Discover what makes the band tick, who was a child actor, who is an award-winning line dancer, who can ride a unicycle and who has met the Queen. Experience a little of the Welsh language and its poetry, and learn about the country and Celtic music from this joyful and playful five-piece band. Sun, 2pm, Te Paepae

Ngā Purapura o Te Tai Hauauru Kapa Haka workshop Join members from the local Māori cultural group Ngā Purapura o Te Tai Hauauru as they sing, dance and explain how Māori culture influences them. Through these interactive workshops there’s opportunity to learn how to do the haka and swing the poi. This group have recently returned from representing the region at Te Matatini National Kapa Haka festival. Sun, 4pm, Te Paepae

Maarja Nuut & Ruum Recreating Traditions Singer and violinist Maarja Nuut will unveil the magic of her haunting landscapes. With live looping, storytelling and body percussion this unique artist pushes traditional Estonian songs into the 21st Century. In this workshop she will give you an insight into her creative process, the elements that have inspired her in traditional music and how she recreates songs with modern technology. Elizabeth Smither Elizabeth Smither is a multi-award-winning New Zealand poet, novelist and short story writer. Sonya Renee Taylor Sonya Renee Taylor is a bestselling author, activist and the Founder and Radical Executive Officer of The Body is Not An Apology, a digital media and education company that examines the intersections of radical self-love and social justice issues. Sonya has shared her awardwinning performance poetry and transformational work on countless stages and on major media outlets all over the world. Neil Silverwood and Marcus Thomas Marcus Thomas and Neil Silverwood are the team behind one of the most handsome books published in 2017, Caves: Exploring New Zealand’s Subterranean Wilderness. The book delivers a treat for cavers and non-cavers alike by showcasing the beauty of this country’s underground caverns and the mettle of those who explore them. John Tamihere has been one of our more colourful and provocative politicians (and broadcasters) over the last couple of decades. John lead Te Whānau o Waipareira as CEO and is also CEO of Te Pou Matakana (TPM), the North Island Whanau Ora Commissioning Agency in New Zealand.

Michael Donaldson is the award-winning author of Beer Nation – the Art and Heart of Kiwi Beer, and The Big Book of Home Brewing – a Kiwi Guide. As the editor of Pursuit of Hoppiness magazine, and a chair of judges for the New World Beer & Cider Awards, Michael and his taste buds are at the forefront of what’s hot in the beer world.

John will discuss the concepts of Whānau Ora family wellbeing and how it is a catalyst for positive change.

Penny Ashton Poet, comedienne, actor, TV presenter, improviser, and all round show off Penny Ashton is back to host Poetry Slam at WOMAD. Known as Ms Hot Pink, Penny is often found gallivanting around the world with her trademark red hair, clutching a microphone and busting out sassy rhymes. Marama Mullen In 1993 Marama Mullen contracted HIV from Peter Mwai. She was part of the case against him and had a long road to recovery in the wake of the trial and her diagnosis. Since then she has cofounded a support organisation, spoken at the UN and the World Health Organisation, and has received the New Zealand Order of Merit for her services to HIV. Danny KilBride Playing his first gig at age nine Danny has since toured internationally and recorded over 20 albums. Danny will discuss why in 1998 he founded “trac” the development agency for traditional music in Wales. Exploring the challenges, opportunities and the benefits for artists working in the traditional music environment and what role this plays in the preservation and revitalisation of the Welsh language.

Stand-up comedian Michèle A’Court has been on TV screens since 1987 and still manages to turn up all over the place. She’s an MC, an entertainer, an actor, a voice artist and a writer. Following on from her hit first book Stuff I Forgot to Tell My Daughter, her second book How We Met is about how real people fall in love and how storytelling helps them stay in love.

The judges Penny Ashton Penny Ashton is New Zealand’s own global comedienne who has been making a splash on the world stage since 2002. She has performed more than 600 solo shows and has sold out from Edinburgh to Adelaide to Edmonton. She has represented both New Zealand in The World Cup of Theatresports in Germany, and Australasia in a Performance Poetry Slam Tournament Tour of the UK. Dominic “Tourettes” Hoey Dominic Hoey, better known as Tourettes has crafted five critically acclaimed studio albums, written two books, a novel, four short films and a one-man show. As well as being an author and a musician, Dominic is a slampoetry champion who has performed in Australia, Europe, England, Japan and America. Sonya Renee Taylor Sonya Renee Taylor is an author, poet, spoken word artist, speaker, social justice activist, educator, and founder of The Body is Not An Apology movement. She has won multiple international poetry slams, and is a transformational leader who enlightens and inspires audiences everywhere from boardrooms and universities, to prisons and homeless shelters.

Kidzone Papa tākaro Welcome to Kidzone, a place where kids can let their creative spirit fly! As a safe and welcoming environment for families and children up to 12, Kidzone is where creativity, stories and entertainment abound. Kidzone has a magical, festival atmosphere and to top it all off it’s absolutely free. This year’s theme is “WOMAD Kids' Wishes for the World”. The theme will enable young WOMADers to express themselves and put their wishes and dreams on a visual pedestal — whether it’s world peace, or fluffy unicorns. Hit Kidzone this festival to explore and celebrate your wishes for the world amongst an explosion of creativity, stories and song.

Decorate the World and Friendship Chain

An oversized decorated world globe and larger than life sunflower and daisies will be made and turned into a giant friendship chain. This globe and chain will celebrate the unity of the children as they march through the festival together as part of the Kidz’ Parade.

Junk Jewellery Workshops

Express yourself by creating your own statement piece of junk jewellery. These workshops are where trash is transformed into treasure.

Creative Embroidery

Embroidery made fun with vibrant hand dyed cloth and iron on transfers. Your embroidery creation will be a festival memento to take home to hang on your wall. Ages 8–12 *

Come along to choir practice. You will learn the Make Every Word Count song as written and performed as the opening of WOMAD by children of Taranaki who took part in the 2019 WOMAD NZ Community Programme.

Kids’ Open Mic

Open mic sessions, whether it be a wish for the world, a song, poem or a friendly hello. Share something with others and celebrate your talents in a supportive, respectful and fun space.

Spin Art and Creative Workshops

You will create your own artwork using stationary Spin Art bikes. In workshops the Spin artworks created will be turned into flags, beautiful bunting or a creature or two.

TSB Community Trust

Through our partners Todd Energy, the TSB Community Trust and the New Plymouth District Council, our aim is to make WOMAD accessible through workshops, concerts and artist interactions with select communities. This year’s events included the ‘Make Every Word Count’ creative song writing workshops with some of our WOMAD NZ artists for Taranaki primary and secondary school children, and a free pop-up concert in New Plymouth’s CBD.

Todd Energy Community Programme Todd Energy is a long term partner of WOMAD and through its valuable support WOMAD is able to extend its activities beyond the festival into local communities. This year, Todd Energy brought the international group Las Cafeteras (Mexico/USA) to St Patrick’s Primary School and Matapu School in South Taranaki, where they held some vibrant and interactive workshops with groups of students who enjoyed this once in a lifetime experience. While select students from North Taranaki’s Huirangi and Tikorangi primary schools got an equally incredible and invaluable opportunity to spend time exploring their creative song writing skills alongside the talented New Zealand singer songwriters Victoria Girling-Butcher and Charlotte Johansen as part of the ‘Make Every Word Count’ Song Writing Project.

This year TSB Community Trust offered a select number of interested students from all secondary schools in Taranaki the unique opportunity to take part in the ‘Make Every Word Count’ Song Writing Project under the wings of renowned NZ singer songwriters Victoria GirlingButcher and Charlotte Johansen. The programme was aimed at stimulating and engaging our young people in the process of creating and performing a song. With the gentle encouragement of Victoria and Charlotte, the students explored their inner songwriters, and collaborated together to create their own verses and contribute their ideas towards the chorus of a song. This was pieced together by the artists, along with the contributions made by students from Huirangi and Tikorangi primary schools. For the ultimate WOMAD NZ festival experience, the students from these workshops will take it one step further and join Victoria and Charlotte to perform the song on the TSB Bowl stage on Friday night as part of the official opening of this year’s festival!

New Plymouth District Council Community Programme New Plymouth District Council’s community programme provided an opportunity for the public to experience a free taste of WOMAD prior to the event and for WOMAD artists to get involved at a community level. The free WOMAD pop-up concert took place at the Puke Ariki landing the Thursday before WOMAD and included festival artists Las Cafeteras (Mexico/USA) and Charlotte Johansen (NZ) and a special one off performance from Victoria Girling-Butcher(NZ). 63

Festival Site It is important to be aware that half the festival site is on a hillside. We have viewing platforms at Todd Energy Brooklands and Gables stages which are fully accessible however the Village of Wellness in the Pinetum is very difficult for those with limited mobility.

Access to the Site We recommend access via Gate C: Kaimata St or Racecourse Carpark via Gate B: Coronation Avenue. You will need a WOMAD 2019 Mobility Parking Pass to park at either of these entrances. You can be picked up or dropped off at the Gate C: Kaimata St entrance — Parking Wardens will instruct you. To enter the festival you will need to have your WOMAD 2019 ticket or WOMAD 2019 wristband.

Accessible Toilets Are located at Gate F (racecourse-end) of the main Bowl Stage and at the top of the site behind the Global Village Retail Stalls.

Drop-off / pick-up — Kaimata St Access to Kaimata St is from Brooklands Rd. This is the only flat level access to the festival site.

Accessible Viewing There are two accessible viewing platforms connected to the Over 65’s stands. These are located at: Gables stage and Todd Energy Brooklands stage.

GATE C: Kaimata Street Golf Carts The inbound route is from Gate C: Kaimata St to the Information Centre. The outbound route is the Information Centre to Gate C: Kaimata St. The golf carts will leave every half hour. Racecourse Golf Carts The inbound route is the racecourse (top of the walking track) to the Information Centre. The outbound route is Information Centre to the racecourse. The golf carts will leave every half hour. You may experience waiting times therefore if you are able to walk unassisted we encourage you to do so. Licensed bars will be operating on site for the duration of the event. EFTPOS facilities are available at all bars. Non-alcoholic drinks are allowed onto the site, but please remember no glass! ATMs / Cashpoint / EFTPOS A cash machine will be operating from the Information Centre and EFTPOS facilities are available at the WOStore and at the bars. The camp manager’s office at the TSB Stadium will handle property lost and found at the campgrounds. All items found are held for seven days after the festival and can be collected from the TAFT office which is located on the corner of Brougham & Powderham Sts, New Plymouth. Phone 06 759 8412 between 9am–5pm, or email info@womad.co.nz. After seven days all items will be donated to local charities. Lost or found children The Information Centre is the place to look. We recommend that children have their parents/caregivers mobile phone number written on their arm or wristband. Please arrange with your children at the beginning of the festival to meet at the Information Centre if you are separated. For any lost or found children please contact the Information Centre. Noise complaints All noise complaints must be registered with New Plymouth District Council. Ph 759 6060. Pass outs You may leave the venue and come back if you wish to, however youth ticket holders are not allowed to enter the venue after 7pm. Seating Camping, sand and pod chairs are permitted into the WOMAD site however any chair with a seat more than 10cm off the ground must only be used on the side of stages. Sun shades Small sun shades are allowed but they must only be used on the side of stages. Smokefree venue Please respect New Plymouth District Council’s smokefree parks policy and refrain from smoking within the venue.
