message from the mayor

On behalf of City Council and the citizens of Greater Sudbury, I want to congratulate YES Theatre on celebrating their 5th anniversary. YES Theatre have brought art, creativity and professionalism to the youth in our great city. Over the years, the theatre group produced successful shows including “Spring Awakening”, “Rent”, and its most successful production, “Jesus Christ Superstar”. To commemorate this achievement, the group is presenting an encore presentation of the popular 2013 show, “Jesus Christ Superstar,” running from July 4 to19, and the debut of the show “In the Heights”, running from August 8 to 23. On behalf of City Council, I want to thank you for continuing to support this outstanding theatre group. I again would like to congratulate all of the members of YES Theatre on this accomplishment and wish them the best in this year’s productions. Yours sincerely,

M a r i a n n e M at i c h u k

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

daniele m u s co l i n o As President of YES Theatre, it gives me great joy to welcome you to our Fifth Anniversary Season! It is hard to process that five seasons have passed since our inaugural production of Hair in the summer of 2010. After reflecting on our first season, it was hard to picture then what the future of YES Theatre would look like, and it is absolutely amazing to see how our company has evolved and grown into what it is today. There are many accomplishments that I am particularly proud of over the last five seasons from YES Theatre. Our productions have left our audiences talking over the last five seasons, and especially the talented actors who have left lasting performances. Many of

06

our actors having had personally enriching experiences on our YES Theatre stage have gone on to pursue careers in the theatre world, and our YES Theatre family also shares in their success. The support of our community has been uplifting and has given us that drive to continue to challenge ourselves in bringing world-class theatre to our city stage. Our Fifth Anniversary Season has provided us the opportunity to expand our repertoire. Being accustomed to presenting one mainstage musical per year, we have grown by offering multiple productions throughout our season. “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “In the Heights” are must-see performances for the summer of 2014, and our venture in conjunction with the Sudbury Symphony Orchestra this coming December 2014 is a

Y E S THE ATR E ’ S JE SUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR & IN T HE HEIGHT S 2 014

first for both YES Theatre and the Symphony as we present a concert-only presentation of “Les Misérables”. These productions, together with the numerous concerts, cabarets, and our annual gala dinner have made it possible to showcase our local talent in many different capacities. Our success does not happen without the support of countless volunteers who provide thousands of hours of their time to contribute to our ventures, and to them I am ever most grateful. To the members of the Board of Directors who give of their time to ensure that our operations are dealt with efficiently, I am also grateful. I thank also the members of our Artistic Council who provide consultation to our Board of Directors as well as hundreds of volunteer hours. To our sponsors – some in particular who have been with us for our entire five seasons – we could not exist without

your support. Finally to our audience members for their continued support, words of thanks and praise, encouraging emails and letters, I sincerely thank all of you. As we asked ourselves five seasons ago, “What does the future hold for YES Theatre?”, the same can be asked today as we celebrate five years. If our past is any indication of where we are going, and the brilliant productions we have seen, I believe the future looks bright for YES Theatre. Yours in theatre,

Daniele Muscolino President, YES Theatre

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

alessandro c o sta n t i n i * Welcome to YES Theatre’s Fifth Anniversary Season! I want to thank you for your continued support over the last five years. Thank you for continuing to return to see the work of these fantastic artists – and if this is your first time at a YES production, welcome! Over the last four seasons we have seen some massive growth within our companyfrom the size of the productions, the skill of the artists and the numbers of patrons coming to see our work. When we started YES, we had no idea that we would even do another production after HAIR. Here we are now in our fifth season. We have had over fifty actors on the YES stage, and our company through our productions, fundraisers, concerts, and festivals have performed in front of 60,000, and we continue to grow.

08

This season has been such a radical experience. I am so excited to be remounting Jesus Christ Superstar! I am very honoured and excited to be bringing back a production that has touched so many people and created some new theatre lovers! Also, I have been able to work on one of my favourite pieces – In The Heights. This has been such a gift to work on., as it is a story about family and home. What better way to celebrate our five years as a company? I take great pride in our artists for bringing forth their stories, both good and bad to give this piece the depth and colour it calls for. The family we have created within our company is quite a remarkable one… formed of many different people, young and old. People who never thought they would call themselves an artist! Here we are, all involved, some in large ways and some in very small, but all incredibly significant and important.

Y E S THE ATR E ’ S JE SUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR & IN T HE HEIGHT S 2 014

I have been trying to search for the words to properly articulate why theatre is important. I struggle to do so because it is a very difficult question to find one great answer for. There is only the sensation. When you sit in the theatre and watch art happen in front of you, something happens. Marcel Proust, a French novelist once said, “Only through art can we get outside ourselves and know another’s view of the universe.” It truly is the one place where we can sit together and listen to the stories of the world in a sort of perfect peace. We learn from theatre…most of the time we do not know what exactly, but we know that it is significant and important. Please continue to go to the theatre. When you are travelling, see if that town has a theatre and go to a play, challenge yourself to step outside of what you think you may

like, challenge yourself to listen to the story of someone who you think you cannot relate to in any way and see how it shapes the way you may look at the world. We are here to communicate and to share. That is what the theatre does for us, and to us. It is a place where thoughts, feelings, and ideas are alive and flying through the air for you to breathe in. I would like to dedicate my work this season to Mr. David Savoy, a fantastic friend, mentor and colleague. Many thanks also to my family, my friends, and my team here at YES Theatre. I love you.

Alessandro Costantini Artistic Director, YES Theatre

PRODUCTION TEAM MESSAGES

K .C . R au t iain e n

J ANIE PINARD

(vocal director)

(CHOREOGRAPHER)

K.C. has been the Vocal Director at YES Theatre since day 1. It was, and continues to be, a no-brainer to say YES to Alessandro. His enthusiasm, vision and love of theatre is infectious and he is an absolute joy to work with. Alessandro continues to give K.C. free rein in regard to her vocal arrangement creativity and a Vocal Director couldn’t ask for anything more. K.C. has nothing but love and hugs for the incredible cast and crew of In the Heights. A harder working group would be difficult to find. K.C. would like to acknowledge the support of the YES group that once again formed a team for the Cancer Relay for Life. To have a YES posse walking by her side during the survivor lap is overwhelming to say the least. Gracias al público por su apoyo continuo. K.C. sends out special love to SP, SBM, AW, JP, AC and WB. Böle!

I fell in love with In the Heights the first time I heard the Broadway Cast recording in Kelsey Tyson's car. I needed to choreograph this show one day… and do it justice I told myself. I need to capture the essence of this culture. I want anyone with a home, any dreamer, family man-women, lover, Rap/ Hiphop/Latin music fan, anyone proud of their heritage to be moved. The rehearsal process was quite the journey and started during my salsa adventures in Montreal. It continued during choreo rehearsals… the empowering Latin dance style made their hips move, made them embrace their bodies, explore their sexy sides and own it! I want to thank the cast for being patient, attentive and for believing in my work. Adding movement to the already powerful music and lyrics is one thing, but topping it off with your own style, soul, love and creativity is what this cast has done and is the secret ingredient to a tasteful show. I also want to thank Alessandro Costantini, his guidance, energy and creative thinking was the fuel that got me through this long and rewarding journey.

(assistant director)

The 2014 season of YES makes twenty five years of involvement with musical theatre, suggesting that escape is unlikely! For the last forty or so productions I’ve been at the wheel for sound and music and am as always hugely grateful for the contribution of the musicians, K.C. being at the top of that list. Amy and the casts are to be commended for their dedication to making the shows as good as they can possibly be- how much everyone cares is what sets YES apart. Remember of course that the key to all of this has been the indefatigable Alessandro’s optimistic insistence that it can get better and better. He believes… and we’re all happy to return the faith.

Gabriella (who plays Nina and is from Toronto) told me that we'd actually met once before we'd started rehearsals; we both happened to be in New York City on the closing weekend of Broadway's run of In the Heights in 2011, happened to see the show on the same night, and happened to chat in the cold at the stage door after the show while waiting to meet Lin-Manuel Miranda. Then we met again three years later and 1167 km away in Sudbury to stage the show together. That was a coincidence. This production didn't happen completely by coincidence, though. This show is a creation by people who are very good at what they do. Janie, KC, Shirley, Sean, Amy, and thanks especially to Alessandro for including me in this journey. I look forward to the future of YES Theatre.

Her latest musical endeavor is as lead vocalist for local gypsy-swing band, HUGH JAZZ. She fell in love with JCS when she was first introduced to the 1971 concept album by a high school friend. In many ways, she has JCS to thank for the relationships she’s made and for many events in her life—one very important event being her onstage proposal by fellow cast member (now fiancé!), Colin Eady last season. She would like to thank the YES Theatre company for giving her the chance to play her dream role, yet again, and for rejuvenating her love of the arts. Jessica is honoured to be surrounded by such

Back from her spectacular year and a half engagement at the eleventh street lot (aka Toronto), Sylvie is thrilled to be back on stage for YES Theatre’s fifth anniversary season. Her previous credits with the company include RENT and Spring Awakening. She would like to dedicate these performances to her father, Gilles, who has been a shining beacon of strength in her life and to her mom, Monique, who will always be her biggest fan. There is no place like home!

Dante is elated to return for his second season with YES Theatre; the group with which his passion for theatre and the arts really developed. Being part of the ensemble in Jesus Christ Superstar, his first show with the company and his first show ever was enough to spark a desire not only to act and sing but to be surrounded by the people who spend their time and effort to create art on stage. The people at YES and all the "theatre people" he's met while pursuing more theatrical excursions are the most loving, accepting and caring humans he's ever met. He's also taken part in the musical "Grease" at Theatre Cambrian as Danny Zuko, the lead male role. Thereafter he devoted himself to the Kiwanis music festival vocal competitions. In them he received no lower than 85% in each of his five competitions which allowed him to move on to the provincials where he placed third out of all grade seven vocal competitors of Ontario. Lately, the young teen has been kept occupied both by the return of JCS where he will now be playing a guard as well as a priest, and In The Heights as an member of the ensemble. When not taking part in a show of some sort he reads, plays piano and waits to finish grade 8 and move on to attend Sudbury Secondary School.

As a singer, DJ, rapper and beatmaker, "Willis" has had the privilege of working with various international artists. The 5th Season of YES Theatre presented an incredible opportunity to nervously shake the dust off. Thank you to the company, and audience, enjoy the show!

Film credits include "The Captive", "Anne Miller".
