YES Theatre demonstrates the exceptional talent found here in Greater Sudbury in every area of a production, including: acting, producing, directing, choreography, lighting, sound, music, set design, costume design, makeup, and more. Our directive is to enable local artists an avenue to share their talents in a professional theatre experience without leaving the Sudbury community. No previous theatre experience is necessary, as there are mentors and community leaders who will provide their expertise and support every step of the way to educate and explore the many talents of local artists. YES Theatre was founded by Alessandro Costantini, and is run by a Board of Directors. YES Theatre is a not-for-profit organization with charitable status and accepts both corporate and individual donations to continue its programs. YES Theatre became incorporated on June 18, 2010, and its current goal is to produce one annual main stage theatre production here in Greater Sudbury.

Congratulations on another great season! Brian & Sue

PRODUCER'S MESSAGE

dani e l e m u s co l i n o It is with great excitement that I welcome you to YES Theatre’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Now in our fourth season, we have much to be proud of at YES Theatre. It has been great to witness a number of our talented actors grow both personally and professionally, with many pursuing further studies in theatre. This was, after all, the initial vision for YES Theatre, to enable our young people in the community to have a chance to shine on stage in a professional theatre setting. The experience provided here helps our young people to chase their dreams of future careers and opportunities within the world of theatre. The support of our community over the past number of years has been exceptional. It is

06

always very exciting to see all of you gather at our numerous performances and fundraising events across the city. The encouragement you have all shown to our YES Theatre family continues to challenge us to make every effort to bring high-quality theatre and entertainment to our local community. This year’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar is a production that this company has been anticipating for many years. The ever-popular musical score from Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber is renowned around the world. The story of Jesus Christ is some 2,000 years old, yet has profoundly changed our world as we know it today. In Jesus Christ Superstar, we see the story of the last days of Jesus Christ shown through the political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus

Christ. Of course, this is not a theological representation of the passion narrative of Jesus Christ, but it does offer a different look at how some people struggled with the direction in which Jesus was headed. Together with an incredible rock musical score, the story presented in Jesus Christ Superstar can give us a modern way of looking at the person of Jesus Christ, while highlighting our own personal struggles with faith. This year’s cast of Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the most talented groups of young people I have worked with. All of you have such great personalities and energies that have made working with you this year a great pleasure. Bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to the stage would have been impossible without the support of the community, our sponsors, volunteers and well-wishers, and to all of them, I offer my deepest gratitude for allowing us to continue every year. To everyone who has contributed in any way to the success of this production, I sincerely thank you.

I also thank our production team: Mary Ann Belowos, Shirley Stenabaugh, Elizabeth Kenny, K.C. Rautiainen, Sean Perras, Amy Wilson, Janie Pinard, Mike Natti, Ronnie Spencer, Megan Lafleur, and Tim Stenabaugh. All of you have truly put in many hours over the course of this year to create something truly magical on stage. It is evident to see the genuine love from all of you for what you do. Many thanks also to our Board of Directors, and everyone who works behind the scenes year-round. Thank you all for your hard work and commitment to YES Theatre. To Alessandro, working with you this year has been another fun journey. You have an amazing talent for bringing people together and leading them to challenge themselves into working to their best potential. You have put an incredible amount of work into this show, and it is because of your passion and drive that YES Theatre is the success it is today. And finally to the audience, thank you for supporting YES Theatre. It is my hope that this performance will be one that you remember.

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

alessandr o c o sta n t i n i * "What is Truth?" Working on a musical that is as epic as Jesus Christ Superstar has proven to be very challenging. Jesus Christ Superstar is one of the most loved and well-known musicals ever written. My question to the company when we started was “How can we make this our story?". We wanted to create a show that was not only a unique take on “the greatest story ever told” but a unique version of Jesus Christ Superstar. As young people, we live in a world today where we think we can do everything for ourselves and the biggest challenge for our actors was shifting that mindset, and trying to put all of our faith and hope into one man. We could have sat for years discussing

08

the various themes of this show. Everyone, regardless of religious background, have beliefs, opinions and ideas about this man and this story. We had to stay true to the story we were telling. I was very fortunate to be able to pull together a group of actors who each gave his or her own individual beliefs and thoughts to create our piece. This show is timeless because it will always be relevant. The story of the person of Jesus is almost like that of an overnight sensation, a story of one who comes and gives hope to an entire world. What you will witness in the show are the moments that define the world we live in today. Because of what happens here, all of history is shifted. Wars are fought, millions find religion, laws are made, some lands flourish while others are destroyed, people live and people die, for what I believe to be

Y E S T HE AT RE ’ S JE SUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR 2 0 1 3

the most talked about topic ever. What is truth? All we could do is to do our best to tell this overwhelming story, to dive in and allow it to be exactly what it is - super. I want to thank my wonderful creative team for their beautiful work throughout this process; Shirley and Liz for keeping my head on straight and being such a wonderful Stage Management team, Mary Ann for always being right by my side to help me through anything and giving our cast such wonderful insight into this world that seemed quite foreign at first, Daniele for being the best at everything he does - always, K.C., even though you have worked on this before thank you for giving us such a fresh and exciting take on this show, you continue to outdo yourself, Mike and Ronnie for the wonderful

set design, Tim for always giving us gorgeous lights, Sean and Amy, for making us sound beautiful, and also to our wonderful musicians, Lawrence for his insight and views on the piece, Diandra for your guidance and help, also to my dearest Janie, you can take my crazy unspecific dance moves in the living room and turn it into a masterpiece! To my cast, every day working on this show was a huge challenge for me and I want to thank each of you for pushing me to grow as an artist and a director. Your work in this show is beautiful and you should all be very proud. To the audience, I know you each have your own truth about this story, and tonight you will see ours. Thank you for coming and supporting YES Theatre.

(vocal director)

(CHOREOGRAPHER)

Jesus Christ Superstar is my favourite musical and it brings me much joy to be doing it with YES Theatre. Having directed and vocal directed it before at Theatre Cambrian I pushed myself to make this a new vocal show. Luckily for me this amazing cast was up for everything I threw at them. The talent, dedication and heart of this cast blows me away. It is such a privilege to work with youth who are there for the art and not the ego. Once again, under the beautiful guidance of Alessandro, the audiences will be amazed by what youth can do when given a chance. By purchasing a ticket for this show you, the audience, provide youth with the opportunity to shine and for that I thank you. I promise you won't be disappointed. Much love and thanks to Alessandro, Janie, Sean, Amy, SBM, the audience and the cast and crew of JCS. BĂśle!

Jesus Christ Superstar was a show I was not so familiar with at first. When Alessandro and I first sat down to watch it and start creating, I immediately felt the same energy that I had when working on HAIR. It has been a pleasure to work on this show that celebrates life. I want to thank my wonderful cast for all their hard work. I know at times it can be difficult but you all have put the time and effort in to making it specific and sharp! Thank you! To Alessandro, I love you, and I just want to create with you forever. Every journey I have with YES is a journey that changes my world.

been in a theatre production since she was a student at Sudbury Secondary School, where she played the role of Eponine in their production of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, directed by Ms. Witty. A solo musician since the age of 16, she has also performed as lead vocalist for several bands, most notably the dance/disco band DIVA and the rock band TRIXX. Her latest musical endeavour is as lead vocalist for the gypsy swing band, HUGH JAZZ. Her love of Jesus Christ Superstar began immediately when she was introduced to the 1971 concept album by a high school friend. She then bought the movie, the album, and multiple CD versions. This obsession has lasted years—from sitting in a tent at her high school graduation party and listening to Colin Eady singing “This Jesus Must Die”, to walking the streets of Stratford ten years later, shamelessly singing “The Last Supper” aloud. She would like to thank the YES Theatre company for giving her the chance to play her favoured role of Judas and for welcoming her with open arms. She is excited to learn more about acting and feels very lucky to be surrounded by such passionate and talented youth. She would also like to thank her boyfriend Colin, her parents and siblings, friends, and extended family for giving her all of their love and support. jenna d ay pu k (ensemble)

Jenna is very excited to be taking part in YES Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar. This is Jenna's first production with YES Theatre. Most recently, Jenna was in her school's production of Godspell and is currently going into grade 11 at St. Charles College. She has had a fantastic time working with the incredibly talented cast and crew and hopes the audience enjoys the show!

jake m. deet h (herod)

This is Jake M. Deeth’s third production with YES Theatre; the first being the smash hit RENT. Jake has performed at his school, Sudbury Secondary School as Troy Bolton in High School Musical, and The Baker in Into The Woods, with UP Theatre in Musical Theatre for a Cause, and at Thorneloe in Macbeth. Jake also performed with Theatre Cambrian in their main stage musicals, The King and I, Bye Bye Birdie, and Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Jake’s most recent performance was in Black Dog: 4 vs the World at The Sudbury Theatre Centre. Sir Lord Jake M. Deeth XIII will be attending George Brown College come September to study Performing Arts. Jake would like to thank his family and friends for everything that he has been given. Enjoy the show.

Since returning to Sudbury just over two years ago, art, theatre, and creativity has been more prevalent in his life than ever before. Recently, Colin and his partner Jessica have founded Sudbury Burlesque which has been an amazing experience, with already one season of knock-out, hilarious performances under their belt and more to come this Fall! Such exciting times in theatre and performance is the motto/creed of Sudbury. Having been a major in Drama at Sudbury Secondary School, Colin shared in the experience as Javert in Les Miserables, Schroeder in You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, plus participation in many other productions, and musical groups. Because Jesus Christ Superstar is one of his all time favourite musicals, he is honoured to be involved with YES Theatre's production. "The history, music, and message that JCS brings has taught me more about spirituality, and respect for fellow beings, what a journey!" WWJD? "What's the Buzz?"

I also want to thank my beautiful inspiring partner Jessica; we got to share in this experience together and she is the best thing to happen to me. Victoria is excited to be hitting the stage for another season with her YES family! At the tender age of 16, she found her voice in a production of Footloose and continued on to perform in the shows Anything Goes, Bye-Bye Birdie, and Guys and Dolls. dante m u l l i n s a n t on e

Broadway are just a hop skip and a song away.

Dante has been in love with the arts since his early childhood and he’s been finding himself especially passionate for one field in particular; performing. During the past few years, music’s absolutely enthralled the young teenager to no end as he’s chased his dreams by singing in choirs and doing solos publicly whenever an opportunity’s presented itself. Thankfully, his parents have made sure to expose him to all sorts of song to cultivate his talent and in doing so made connections that led him to YES Theatre. Despite his age (which many cast members double), everyone there has accepted him like a sibling and he truly believes them to be his second family.

5 th anniversary season announcement Dear Patron, Thank you once again for your continued support of YES Theatre. As we forge ahead into our fifth anniversary season we are proud to announce our summer 2014 production;

By Lin Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegria Hudes. Nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 2008 as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

IN THE HEIGHTS tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind. IN THE HEIGHTS is the winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestration. We feel that the themes in this piece will strike a chord with the people of Sudbury. It is very much a immigrant story about celebrating family and your roots. It is the perfect show for our fifth anniversary season. If you have seen our productions in the past and enjoy the performance tonight then I ask you to continue to support YES Theatre and get your tickets for In The Heights; a musical not as well known here in our city, but celebrated world wide. We promise to continue to bring important, relevant and thought provoking work to Sudbury in order to keep our city’s Arts and culture thriving. See you next year!
