chair’s message It is both an honour and privilege to Chair the Board of Directors for Autism Canada. This past year has been one of change, reorganization, policy development and great achievement. Award-winning Cogent/Benger Productions featured Autism Canada in the documentary The Autism Enigma on the Nature of Things with David Suzuki. It tackled one of the most contentious issues in medicine today: the various, and often conflicting, hypotheses about autism’s cause. I personally reached out to Members of Parliament, Senators and Ontario Members of Provincial Parliament encouraging them to watch it. In the end, more than 546,000 households tuned into their television sets to watch the premier. If you missed the documentary, it is still available on CBC’s website. This documentary may very well do more for the disorder than anything we have seen before. It was with great pleasure that I welcomed four new board members, each bringing real passion, commitment and skills to Autism Canada. New members include Steve Horner, from Calgary, Alberta, Bill Shin, from London, Ontario, Alex Stephens, from Toronto, Ontario and John Van Dyk, from Stratford, Ontario. All are established professionals and proud fathers of children diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
Dr. Luc Duchesne resigned from the board this year after serving for nine years. Luc was a founding director and a real visionary. We wish him much success and feel certain that he will continue to serve the cause of autism for years to come through his family and community.

executive director’s message It is a privilege to work and serve such a wonderful team of donors, volunteers, staff and board members, all believing that together we Change Lives through our work. As a result of donations, independent fundraising events and employment grants, we were able to reach more families looking for the latest information on treatments, research and stories of recovery. Over 95,000 people accessed our Family Support and Resource Program. This is up 16% from last year. Our goal is that every family that has a child diagnosed with autism receives information on the multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Thanks to grants from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and
Canada Summer Jobs, we were able to employ students and interns. These students worked in the areas of web and graphic design, public relations, fund development, marketing, media production and conference coordination. It was a wonderful experience for us to have such young, bright and talented minds working with us. A highlight of the year was reconnecting with a University of Western Ontario student, Simon Choy. After graduating, Simon started a company, ConnectAd Inc., and approached us to do a pilot project. He has been instrumental in us receiving an advertising grant for inkind services. He has since developed a unique ad campaign to ensure people looking for the latest information on autism will find us. Simon is an excellent example of how Autism Canada has been able to effectively utilize talented young professionals to access resources. Conferences have always been a way that parents, educators, professionals, researchers and individuals affected by autism can come together to share
and learn. This year for the first time our annual conference, which was in collaboration with KidsAbility, was web cast free of charge thanks in part to a SickKids Foundation’s National Grant Program. Our priority is to empower all Canadians, regardless of where they live in our vast country, with information so everyone has the opportunity to make informed choices. It is our intention to continue webcasting the conference in years to come. It was with great excitement that we were able to form a partnership with Leda Health. David Walt, CEO, has pledged a percentage of all sales from their Baby Works product line. Products range from disposable Potty Seat Covers to a riding toy. Autism Canada’s logo is proudly displayed on all items, so ask for them at your independent Baby Store. While I would like to thank everyone who supports Autism Canada, I would like to take a minute to mention the ongoing annual support of the HPG Group, Ellen Cowie’s Foot’s Bay Art Festival and Senti Rasa’s Changing Season Gala. These established, ongoing events are truly appreciated and we encourage others to get involved with them or consider starting your own. Working passionately for the cause of autism,

$15,000 research donation
In January, the Board of Directors met with professional counsel Holly Benson for a day of strategic planning. Together, we reviewed and revised our Vision, Mission, Values and Beliefs. All are proudly displayed on our website (www.autismcanada.org) and in this annual report. Strategic goals and a business plan were also established to ensure we stayed focused on our mandate. At the same time, we examined our committee structure and made some changes.
Governance
The Kilee Patchell-Evans Autism Research Group A donation of $15,000 was made to the Kilee PatchellEvans Autism Research Group directed by Dr. Derrick MacFabe at the University of Western Ontario. The group’s outstanding research is some of the most promising and novel research in the world. They provide a unique environment to study the basic mechanisms involved in the causes and possible treatments for autism.

As a result of the committee restructuring, a Governance and Nomination committee was struck. This committee worked diligently on the governance documentation around these committees, including Terms of Reference and Job Descriptions. This new committee structure will ensure we are well positioned to lead Autism Canada for many years to come.
Human Resources Thanks to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation and Canada Summer Jobs, we had two full time employees and four summer students working along side our Executive Director. Working with these wonderful young minds has been rewarding for both parties.

the autism enigma Autism Canada was featured on the documentary The Autism Enigma on The Nature of Things with David Suzuki, represented by Laurie Mawlam, Executive Director. More than 546,000 households watched the premier on CBC. Sixty days post premier, over 30,000 viewers had watched the documentary on the CBC website and there were 60,000 hits on The Nature of Things website for the film. A letter was sent to all English speaking MPs, Senators and Ontario MPPs asking that they watch The Autism Enigma documentary featured on The Nature of Things with David Suzuki so that they gain more knowledge and awareness of the disorder. We need our governments to see autism as a priority and this documentary may very well do more for the disorder than anything else we have done to date.

family support and resource program More people than ever before count on Autism Canada for information, with 95,091 accessing our Family Support and Resource Program in 2011. We hit a record 83,099 unique visitors to our site (up from 76,703 from last year), 3,458 friends on Facebook (up from 2,500 from last year), 439 followers on Twitter, 2,345 plays on Vimeo, 2,200 e-newsletter subscribers and 2,000 direct contacts via email and phone calls in addition to the 1,550 people who accessed our conference.
Changing the course of autism conference 2011 In collaboration with KidsAbility, we hosted our annual conference in Kitchener, Ontario with approximately 350 people in attendance and over 1,200 web-attendees. This was the first year that Autism Canada webcast our conference thanks to the support of SickKids Foundation’s National Grants Program.
Autism Canada’s Facebook page was picked and placed on the Babble. com Top 30 Autism Facebook Pages in the world recognizing it as among the most outstanding online resources for families affected by autism. Babble.com is the best online resource for parents, providing exceptional service content and incisive, honest essays about parenting. Autism Canada expanded its media outlets from our website, Facebook, Twitter, e-newsletter, Vimeo to include Youtube. While it was only available for the last two months of the year, almost 300 views have been recorded.
website relaunch For World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, we re-launched our website (www.autismcanada.org) featuring not only our updated resource section on treatments but a collection of free lectures from autism experts from around the world. These videos have been accessed by over 2,300 people.
Public library expansion Over 200 books were placed in the hands of parents and public libraries throughout Canada. Knowledge empowers people to make informed choices.
Media Autism Canada’s new radio Public Service Announcement was launched and distributed in Ontario through Astral Radio, Bayshore Broadcasting and The Haliburton Broadcasting Network with a reach of 1,000,000 listeners. We issued a national Press Release to all major media outlets on April 1st honouring World Autism Awareness Day with a call to action for governments and professional organizations to improve the quality of life for those on the autism spectrum. We launched a new project to research and summarize the long-term care facilities available for individuals with ASD.
Partnerships / affiliations Autism Canada collaborates with over forty other autism organizations and individuals across Canada, through the Canadian Autism Spectrum Disorders Alliance (CASDA), to meet with Federal Government policy makers. Laurie Mawlam sits on the Leadership Committee of CASDA and one of their goals is meet with federal government officials regularly to influence change. The results of these meeting are posted on the CASDA‘s website at www.ASDallaince.org •
Autism Canada is an active member of the Global Autism Alliance, which works to partner on specific programs, including conferences and translation of articles.

Autism Canada sits on the Leadership Committee of CASDA and plays a prominent role in that collaboration, influencing the Federal Government to implement a National Autism Strategy.

We built an excellent relationship with KidsAbility in Kitchener, Ontario, through our 2011 conference.

physician handbook The Autism Physician Handbook has found support from Starbucks and Bailey Metal Group to allow us to print the first 1,000 copies and make them available to healthcare professionals. This will assist physicians in detecting the disorder and assure that patients are referred appropriately.

On September 5, 2011, Joey celebrated his Bar Mitzvah with no accommodations or modification to the traditional ceremony. His parents had waited for this day since he was born but were told it would never be a traditional Bar Mitzvah when he was diagnosed with autism. Autism Canada was delighted to share this special day with Joey and his family. We were honoured to be able to write the remarkable story about his parents’ journey to help their son, which was published in the Jewish Tribune, Canada’s Largest Jewish Publication. Steve, Joey’s dad, shared that Joey’s Bar Mitzvah was not only a celebration of Joey’s coming of age, but it was also a celebration of his recovery.

FOOT’S BAY Art Festival over $33,500 raised Distinguished Canadian artist Ellen Cowie has hosted the Foot’s Bay Charity Art Festival for four years and raised over $33,500 with the support of fellow artists, family and friends. This event has featured over a hundred artists, including Eddie LePage, Andrew Benyei, David Ward, Pauline Thompson and Benita Lynch. Over the weekend of the Art Festival, hundreds of cottage owners on Lake Joseph and surrounding Muskoka visit to purchase one-of-a-kind artwork with at least 25% of all sales being donated to Autism Canada. We are eternally grateful to Ellen and her partners for their wonderful support over the years. Ellen Cowie specializes in oil painting. She currently resides in Peterborough, Ontario.

HPG and partners Over $52,000 raised Hydronic Parts Group and their partners have been true corporate champions to Autism Canada and the families we support. Since 2008, their golf tournament has raised $52,000, and the awareness they have raised is priceless. Starbucks change for Autism Starbucks Coffee Canada held their first "Change for Autism" campaign in uptown and downtown Toronto raising over $6,400. For the week leading to World Autism Awareness Day, April 2, customers donated their change which will be used to publish and distribute the Autism Physician Handbook. This handbook will ensure that no child is overlooked for autism pre-screening. It is essential that everyone knows the early warning signs of autism and gets a referral when required to ensure they receive treatment as early as possible.

treasurer’s message Each year, more people depend and count on Autism Canada. A challenging economic climate resulted in decreased donations. By prudently managing expenses, we maintained our Family Support and Resource Program and delivered another successful conference. One of our most important assets is our reputation in the community, and maintaining a strong and open relationship with our stakeholders is a top priority. To this end, in 2011 we enrolled in Imagine Canada’s Ethical Fundraising and Financial
Accountability Code Program to improve and monitor our fundraising and financial reporting practices. To help us raise and more effectively manage funds in the future, we have recently implemented an easy-touse and secure web-based solution for stakeholders to engage their own personal networks and communities in imaginative fundraising events to help us to continue to support those living with autism, change minds and change the course of autism.
