‌Everyone in Montana could have guessed that Caleb Kidder, a 275-pounder who stands 6 feet, 5 inches tall and sports Montana’s No. 37 legacy jersey, would start in the middle of the Grizzlies’ defensive line this fall.

Kidder is huge, powerful and fast, destined for a breakout season unless injury steps in the way. For as obvious as Kidder’s starting call was, Jamal Wilson’s spot was that inconceivable.

And yet on opening day, as the Grizzlies entertained four-time defending national champion North Dakota State and more than a million Americans watching on national television, there was Wilson, his 5-foot-11 frame in stark contrast to the monstrous Kidder beside him in the starting lineup.

Last Saturday’s victory over the Bison marked the 20th career start for Wilson, though the prior 19 had each come at fullback on offense. Wilson hadn’t played tackle since his sophomore year of high school.

He’d never played defense at the college level before.

“Once I got the gist of it I started thinking more and more, ‘Hey, I could really be good at this,’” Wilson said. “Once I realized that, I thought it wouldn’t be crazy to think I could start when the season started.”

Not crazy to Wilson, though perhaps to everyone else.

When the University of Montana handed the keys to coach Bob Stitt last December,

Others opted to try and make the move.

“You always have the thought of, well, maybe I played my last down,” said Wilson, who along with fullback Riley Kack crossed the line of scrimmage to try out DT back in March.

Kack did not survive the round of cuts following spring ball.

This isn’t the first encounter Wilson has had with change in his time playing college football.

The Fontana, California native signed with Boise State in 2011, making three appearances as the Broncos’ blocking back as a redshirt freshman the following fall.

But with the 2012 graduation of Kellen Moore, the NCAA’s all-time winningest quarterback at the FBS level (50-3), and the implementation of a one-back pistol base offense, Boise no longer required fullbacks.

Wilson was left looking for opportunities elsewhere. The transition to defense at FBS would have been too steep, he figured.

“One of the biggest differences between this level (FCS at Montana) and that level is the line play,” he said. “I think it would have been really, really difficult for me to compete with five or six other guys on scholarship playing D-line.”

Over at Montana, the Grizzlies were one year deep into the Mick Delaney era. The head coach, who retired at the end of last season, making way for Stitt’s triumphant arrival, had replaced the spread offense put in place by former coach Robin

And while we’re on the subject of said comeback, Montana’s final play featured a familiar face in the backfield.

Wilson trotted out in the Grizzlies “jumbo” double-fullback offensive formation at the goal line, blocking out the NDSU defense to help running back Joey Counts find the end zone for the gamewinning touchdown with 2 seconds left.

going to be a bear for the Grizzlies and it could certainly go either way.

‌What a marvelously intriguing matchup.

Two distinctly different offensive schemes, both capable of thoroughly confusing the opposition. Montana plays fast and at times last week appeared unstoppable. Cal Poly tests your defensive discipline with a triple option that gave the Griz fits last season.

Expect a high-scoring affair on Saturday night. And don’t automatically assume just because Montana knocked off top-ranked North Dakota State that this Saturday will be any easier.

It’s worth looking over recent history between the teams. Two years ago, with two all-time great linebackers in the lineup in Brock Coyle and Jordan Tripp and a rare talent at defensive end in Zack Wagenmann, Montana needed a minor miracle to beat the Mustangs in an overtime thriller at home, using an unlikely Tripp blocked field goal.

Last year wasn’t so pleasant for the maroon and silver at Cal Poly. In fact it stunk.

Are the Griz any better on defense?

Probably not.

But they’re better on offense and they’re capable of outscoring the Mustangs Saturday.

“I think ‘Miah’s pretty good at it to tell ya the truth,” Wilson said. “I think he really is a natural.”

And though Stitt said Wilson may not be a natural yet, his transition exhibits the kind of gumption the

coach looks for in his players. And sure, it’s nice to have some guys who know how to block to toss in the backfield every once in a while.

“He’s just one of those guys that whatever situation, whatever adversity that’s thrown at him, he’s gonna come out on top,” Stitt

said. “You’re gonna see down the line once he leaves Montana that he’s gonna be very successful outside of football also.”

If Wilson has his way, he’ll continue to have success inside the game for a bit first. The 22-year-old has balanced his weight in an

area that allows him to succeed in his current role on defense without hampering his possible future at fullback.

At 265 pounds, he’s found the sweet spot.

“That’s the weight I feel I can play my best at and still, because I do plan on playing fullback at the professional

level, that’s the easiest transition for me to lose the weight I’ll need to lose.”

And if that doesn’t work out? Well, Wilson is coming up on the completion of an undergraduate degree in political science. There’s always law school.

QUARTERBACK: Brady Gustafson played admirably in his first start. Despite throwing for 434 yards and three touchdowns, there is room for improvement. Last season, Chris Brown adeptly operated Cal Poly’s triple-option attack. As impressive as Gustafson was, Brown is one of the most dangerous athletes in the Big Sky. OFFENSIVE LINE: Gustafson got hit a lot last week and didn’t dress for a day of practice this week. However, Montana’s run game was effective when it needed to be. Cal Poly returns tons of experience and talent to a line that has paved the way for the country’s most effective rushing attack.

RUNNING BACK: John Nguyen was effective on zone runs and also useful in the passing game, even when used as a decoy: A 62-yard touchdown to Ellis Henderson was set up by a play-action fake just a play after Nguyen ran for a couple on a similar looking play. Poly’s Brown and Kori Garcia spearheaded an attack that set a Big Sky single-season rushing record.

WIDE RECEIVERS/TE: Montana’s deep receiving corps showed off its ability with a number of deep circus catches, but it was also effective on crossing routes that attacked NDSU’s linebackers. And Reese Carlson was reliable in the slot. That could be important again as Cal Poly is breaking in two and maybe three backers and two new safeties.

DEFENSIVE LINE: Montana gave up a pretty healthy 5.1 yards per carry last week. While NDSU attacked mostly with power, Cal Poly will cut block and try to confuse Montana’s gap assignments with motion and misdirection. It worked really well last season. While Cal Poly had some losses on the line and UM’s experience wins out, the loss of Caleb Kidder is a big blow.

LINEBACKERS: Montana’s linebackers are experienced.

Cal Poly’s are not and they’ll be challenged in different ways.

Montana’s LBs saw this offense last season, Poly’s did not. Bob Stitt said UM’s defense could benefit from schemes his staff used last season against triple-option offenses.

CB/SAFETY: Poly is strong at corner with returners Karlton Dennis and Chris Fletcher, but brings in new safeties. Montana’s DBs were shaky early, but didn’t give up any big plays against NDSU. They’ll have to balance their coverage and run-support responsibilities while not peeking into the backfield too often.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Daniel Sullivan was solid last week after a shaky fall camp and seems to have won over the support of Stitt, who labeled him a “gamer”. Poly was 52-56 on PATs, but the team attempted just two field goals last season.

INTANGIBLES: Poly abused Montana’s defense last season, rushing for 421 yards, and outscoring the Griz 27-7 in the second half. If Poly can control the line of scrimmage and the clock, Montana won’t get to the 90 plays it so badly wants. It’s an interesting contrast in styles, but Montana just topped the No. 1 team in the nation and the Griz are riding a waive of momentum — and they’re playing at home in what should be another electric atmosphere.

NDSU triumph has Naccarato excited for more JOSH THOMAS for the Missoulian

The Montana Grizzlies football team got their season off to a wild start last Saturday afternoon against the No. 1 team in the FCS, the North Dakota State Bison. The Griz finished the game with 434 passing yards behind new head coach Bob Stitt’s gun-slinging offensive scheme. What makes those receiving yards possible, of course, is the team’s experienced receiving corps.

Behind big games from Ellis Henderson and Jamaal Jones, Montana’s wide outs were on full display in front of ESPN cameras. But another player who knows a thing or two about Montana’s offensive attack is veteran receiver Chase Naccarato.

The redshirt junior played in eight games his true freshman season, and has seen consistent playing time since then, up until the 2014 season in which he managed to play in only three games due to injuries.

He is back this season with a thirst to contribute to a passhappy Montana team. Expected to compete for significant playing time at the “z” slot receiver — he started in last week’s game — Naccarato is eager to show Griz Nation he is back in full force. His next chance will come against Cal Poly this Saturday.

The Spokane native sat down with the Missoulian before an afternoon September practice.

Q: What is your major and why study that field?

A: I’m majoring in organizational communication, as well as a business minor. To be honest, I’m not really exactly sure what I want to do after college yet like a lot of people. My family has always been businessoriented so that made me want to look at that area.

Q: After finishing last season with a tough loss to EWU in the playoffs, what did it feel like to

‌ RIZZLIES UPSET BISON G For the Grizzlies, the tried-and-true story of home-field advantage held true, as Montana beat North Dakota State, 38-35, in front of 26,472 fans — a Washington-Grizzly Stadium record.

With 2 seconds left in the game, Montana tailback Joey Counts had a one-yard touchdown, capping a sequence that saw the Grizzlies drive 80 yards in 16 plays.

The game featured a quarterback battle, with Montana starter Brady Gustafson and Bison starter Carson Wentz combining for 632 yards and five touchdowns.

Gustafson owned the battle, throwing for 434 yards and three touchdowns in his first collegiate start.

WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE Montana’s Bob Stitt and Portland State’s Bruce Barnum are the newest head coaches in the league. Stitt was previously a head coach at Division-II Colorado School of Mines, where he led the Orediggers to the Division-II playoffs on three separate occasions. Stitt won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) title in 2004, 2010 and 2014.

NEW FACE, FAMILIAR PLACE Portland State’s Bruce Barnum is in his sixth season with the team, but is entering his first as the team’s head coach. Barnum was named the interim coach in November of 2014, taking over for former coach Nigel Burton.

Barnum previously served as the Vikings’ offensive coordinator and Portland State set several offensive records in his time as coordinator — total offense (6, 486 yards), rushing offense (3,330 yards) and rushing touchdowns (36) — all in the 2013 season.

BIG SKY VS. FBS Ten of the Big Sky’s teams will be playing FBS teams this fall. Every school except Montana, Montana State and Northern Colorado will play one FBS opponent, while Idaho State will face two Mountain West opponents in backto-back weeks (Boise State and UNLV).

Eastern Washington will open the season at 2014 national runner-up Oregon on Sept. 5. Weber State faced Oregon State on Sept. 4 in Corvallis, where Wildcats

FOUR TEAMS RANKED Four Big Sky teams were ranked in the initial STATS FCS Top-25 poll. Eastern Washington debuted at sixth, Montana State at 11th, Montana at 13th and Idaho State at 22nd. Cal Poly and Northern Arizona received votes in the poll. A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries selects

the STATS FCS Top 25. The Top 25 is released every Monday afternoon during the regular season, except for Sunday morning, Nov. 22, prior to the selection of the 24-team FCS playoff field. A final Top 25 will follow the FCS championship game, which will be held Jan. 9 in Frisco, Texas.

GRIZZLIES TOP ALL-TIME PROGRAM IN BIG SKY Montana has won the most Big Sky titles of any football program, with 19 titles all-time. The Grizzlies last won the Big Sky in 2009. Montana State is second in all-time titles, with 15.

Bobcats’ last title came in 2012.

COACH SPEAK NAU’s Jerome Souers and ISU’s Mike Kramer are each entering their 18th seasons as head coaches in the Big Sky. Souers ranks second all-time with 100 wins.

Kramer is third with 91. Souers has won 67 conference games, just one behind all-time leader Chris Ault (Nevada). Kramer has 61 conference wins and Cal Poly coach Tim Walsh is fourth in conference victories with 60 wins. Ault is the all-time leader in wins with 111. Walsh begins the season in fourth all-time in victories with 87. Eastern Washington’s Beau Baldwin ranks seventh all-time in winning percentage at .728.

Baldwin has compiled a 67-25 record in his six seasons with the Eagles.

‌EUGENE, Ore. – It’s certainly not lost on Oregon that Vernon Adams’ first game for the Ducks will be against his old team, Eastern Washington.

The No. 7 Ducks host the Eagles on Saturday afternoon. And while Adams may have some insider information on his former team’s tendencies, they also have an idea of his inclinations.

Either way, coach Mark Helfrich thinks the value of all this is a bit overstated.

“They’re not going to drastically change,” Helfrich said. “What they’ve done on film is what they’re going to do. By the same token, their personnel is a little bit different, just like our personnel is a little bit different. ...

There’s gonna be changes from year to year just like there’s changes for us.”

Last season, Vernon helped Eastern Washington to an 11-3 overall finish; the Eagles were 7-1 in the Big Sky Conference.

He threw for 3,483 yards and 35 touchdowns with eight interceptions, while also running for 285 yards and six touchdowns.

Vernon took advantage of an NCAA rule that allowed him to transfer as a senior after completing his degree at Eastern Washington.

There were a few tense moments in Adams’ move to Eugene when he had to pass one more class to complete his coursework.
