‌On a typical California spring day in 2012, Herbert Gamboa worked his cleats into the artificial surface at Cerritos College and waited for the signal.

Unlike in his next four years at the University of Montana, where his ferocity would rule the moments ahead of the whistle on the football field, the San Clemente High senior listened for the official’s sharp blast to unleash his potency on this day.

At the sound of the gun, the coiled viper exploded with a burst like none other in his running career, speeding to a 100HERBERT meter dash victory GAMBOA in the CIF Division No. 36 I Finals with a career best 10.51 Position: OLB seconds. Hometown: Sure the all-state San Clemente, sprinter was interCalif. ested in finding just how fast he could really be, but the athlete raised on the seaside between San Diego and Los Angeles was more intrigued by his quickness in a full suit of football armor.

Track was fine, but his intensity warranted a sport that allowed him more physical contact with his opponents, his single-serving enemies of the day.

“You flip the switch; you go into this mentality where you’ve got to be intense,” Gamboa explained. “You’ve just got to lose it. You’ve got to be a little crazy to play football.”

The Montana Grizzlies liked that sentiment.

Gamboa, the son of the elder Herbert and Rosalia Gamboa, drew interest from around the Big Sky Conference as his time at San Clemente neared its close.

A running back and linebacker for the Tritons, Gamboa pulled in scholarship offers from the likes of Cal Poly, Sacramento State, Eastern Washington and, of course, Montana.

His official recruiting trip to Missoula on a snowy weekend in January 2012 confirmed his inkling: he’d spend his next four or five years in the mountains.

“It was actually the first time I saw snow fall, on my visit,” Gamboa said at a recent Griz practice, a goofy grin crossing his face at the memory. “It was pretty exciting.”

Though he came to campus as a linebacker, a position where he’d eventually become a two-year starter, Gamboa’s speed and Montana’s shifting personnel pulled the Californian out of his comfort zone. The Griz needed him to play safety.

With a rash of injuries in the secondary and a linebacking corps that featured

future pros Jordan Tripp, Brock Coyle and John “JP” Kanongata’a, Gamboa slid his skills over to relief duties at free safety. For the next two years, he filled in behind stalwart Matt Hermanson.

“I think for the safety position you need to have a pretty high football IQ, because you’re pretty much the quarterback back there,” said Gamboa, whose 6-foot-1, 215-pound frame lent itself well to the transition. “You have to see See GAMBOA, Page A4

everything and get all the checks for the rest of the defense.

“Linebacker, it’s basically instinct, raw mentality. Just go hit.”

That’s not to say there’s no hitting involved from the back end. After appearing in seven games as a true freshman — mostly on special teams duty — Gamboa saw action in 14 as a sophomore.

But with the mass graduation exodus of Montana’s talented linebackers following the 2013 season, Gamboa got his chance to return to his true position.

He was one of three newcomers to the starting lineup at linebacker, along with fellow outsider Kendrick Van Ackeren and the “Mike,” Jeremiah Kose.

“He was fired up, fired up to come home, so to speak,” remembered Ty Gregorak, Montana’s defensive coordinator who also oversees the LBs.

The three linebackers burst on the scene in 2014, each totaling more than 100 tackles. Gamboa finished with 107, fourth-most on the team, with 10.5 of those for loss, third. He also ranked third on the Grizzlies with 6.0 sacks.

“You automatically have to say speed,” said Kose, when asked to describe Gamboa, “but he’s very physical too. Anybody, everybody — a lineman, a fullback — he’s gonna take ‘em on full force.”

Gamboa’s combination of speed and physicality, to the point of recklessness at times, makes him often the first to the ball from his weak-side outside linebacker position, Gregorak added.

“You see him a lot at the point of attack,” the coach said. “Receivers don’t like to block Herbert. Ask any of our receivers.”

The three-headed monster in the middle was set for its second campaign this fall — all three started at least 13 games in 2014 and are seniors for 2015 — before an off-the-field issue changed the course.

Just days before the Grizzlies opened preseason practices in August, Gamboa was picked up for disorderly conduct at a University neighborhood house party. He pleaded guilty to instigating a fight, paid $160 in fees and received a six-month deferred sentence.

The senior, a USA College Football preseason honorable mention AllAmerican, was forced to watch from the sideline as his teammates battled the Bison in a game that will go down as one of the greatest in Washington-Grizzly Stadium history. Montana pulled out the upset, 38-35, on Aug. 29 on a lastsecond touchdown from the 1-yard line, a fourth-down play.

“After that incident, my mind was just focused on doing the right things and being a part of the team, doing it right,” said Gamboa, visibly disappointed even

two months later about missing the game. “That next week, I just had all the wrong intentions to go (wild).”

The linebacker got in on seven tackles the following week against Cal Poly — he had a season-high 12 two weeks ago against Weber State — and has piled up 33 stops in five games this year.

“It was a tough deal at the start of the season and he knew he embarrassed himself and the program,” Gregorak said.

“He embarrassed me. It was frustrating, but he’s come back from it.”

And he’s been trying to make it up to his teammates — and himself — ever

since. With the Griz now on the back nine of their 2015 campaign, Saturday’s clash with North Dakota the secondto-last home game of the year already, Gamboa is more motivated than ever to get in on every play.

That includes some time on special teams — Gregorak has anointed Gamboa a “special teams warrior” — barreling down the field on kickoffs or punts to hunt skittish return men.

“Special teams is a huge part of the game,” Gamboa said. “It gives you more opportunity to make plays and as a senior. I want every snap.”

Iowan brings physicality to Griz O-line JOSH THOMAS for the Missoulian‌

‌When you leave your hometown for college, you leave a lot of things behind. Your family, friends and everything you once knew is thrown out the window temporarily and you forge a new home and plant your roots elsewhere.

When McCauley Todd left home from Iowa to join the University of Montana football team, he certainly had to say some goodbyes, but what he has found in Missoula is a new perspective. An avid fan of the outdoors, Todd has loved his time in the Rocky Mountains, picking up a new hobby in fly fishing over the past year.

While he didn’t see a ton of action for the Griz in his first few seasons — he’s now starting at left guard on the offensive line, though — Todd has been around the program for three seasons and knows how things go on the Montana sideline. Part of the offensive line, the Iowa native will continue to look to make an impact this season for new coach Bob Stitt in whatever way he can, be it on or off the field.

The Missoulian spoke with McCauley before an October practice that saw Montana preparing to right the ship against North Dakota. Having had a week off since their loss to Weber State, can Todd and the Grizzlies remain in the talks for playoff contention?

Q: Where did you go to high school and how would you describe your prep experience?

MCCAULEY TODD No. 69 Year: R-Jr. Height: 6-7 Weight: 295 Hometown: Cedar Rapids, Iowa A: I went to Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I loved my high school. My junior year I didn’t really play because I was hurt and I had some guys who were veterans in front of me. I played pretty well my senior year and here we are. I still keep in touch with a lot of my old teammates.

Q: What is your major and why’d you choose that?

A: I am a history major with an African-American studies minor. I chose that just because I’ve always been interested in history.

I knew it was something I could study and be interested in, not just work to get through it.

Q: In high school, I heard you finished with a 3.7 GPA and you’ve always been pretty focused in the classroom. What pushed you to have that education-first mentality?

A: I just wanted to work hard for my parents. I wanted to make sure I set myself up to do well later in life.

Q: Iowa and Montana are sort of similar in that they don’t get talked about a lot nationally. What have you noticed as some similarities or differences

in the two states?

A: They are both places, like you said, where people who aren’t from there say they wouldn’t wanna go there or whatever.

But once you get here, you realize it isn’t that bad. In Montana’s case, with the natural beauty of the mountains, rivers and lakes, you don’t have much of that in Iowa. As far as similarities go, the people are really nice and warm in both states and they have a lot of pride in where they’re from, be it an Iowan or a Montanan.

Q: You guys have completed a good chunk of the season, so what have been your takeaways thus far?

A: Obviously, things haven’t exactly gone as we envisioned it. We’re a tight team, we’re trying to work on coming together and building on what we’ve done and keeping our goals in mind. We control our own destiny and we have to do everything we can to be prepared to leave it all on the field.

Q: You guys had a week off to refocus and readjust, so what is the team looking to key in on against North Dakota?

A: We have to get back to solid assignments and being physical. We have to minimize mistakes, but at the same time we can’t hold back and we have to play fearless.

Q: What is the O-line specifically looking to build on?

A: We have to be physical, be the baddest guys out there. Get our assignments locked in so we can play fast football. That’s all we think about.

Q: Speaking of fast football, has it been hard

at all adjusting to the pace of Stitt’s new system where players are expected to be constantly moving?

A: It definitely took a lot of work to get in-shape for it. It’s fun. It’s great when we do get rolling because at our peak, defensive lines aren’t built to handle that and they need to rotate in and out a lot which creates confusion and they can’t get into rhythm or they’re playing 10 plays in a row and they get exhausted.

So we prefer to be 10 plays deep versus only a couple plays. As an O-line, we’re proud of the speed we’re playing at.

Q: Having been around the team for a couple years, what advice do you give to the younger guys to help keep their head on straight?

A: My biggest thing in my experience has been: don’t waste time to do the right thing. Get going right away and figure out what you want to do. Sometimes for guys it takes a year or two to figure out your place and your goals.

It’s a lot different than high school ball. Don’t regret anything, go at it and work your butt off and good things will happen.

Keep your head down and trust the process.

Q: You have above average size, being bigger than most O-line guys around the conference. How do you look to utilize your strengths as a player?

A: Gotta be physical.

I’ve never been the strongest or the fastest, but I’ve always prided myself on being physical and

technical with my movement. That’s what I focus on. Any scheme can be penetrated and that’s the mentality that I play with.

Q: Favorite television show? What is popping up in your Netflix queue?

A: The Office is my all-time favorite TV show, and I also like It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

Q: Favorite spot around Missoula?

A: I’ve really gotten into fishing the past year and I love hitting up the Blackfoot, the Clark Fork and just generally around the area. It’s something in Iowa I don’t normally have access to.

Q: Favorite song or musician at the moment?

A: I really like Isaiah Rashad (Top Dawg Entertainment rapper).

QUARTERBACK: Neither team will have its No. 1 QB this week with UND’s Keaton Studsrud banged up next to Montana’s Brady Gustafson and Chad Chalich. Still, the Grizzlies’ third-stringer (Makena Simis) might be better than UND’s backup (Ryan Bartels), who has helmed the last two losses for NoDak. OFFENSIVE LINE: UND linemen Sean Meehan (right tackle) and Brandon Anderson (left guard) are each riding starting streaks of 27-plus games. UND’s front five block as well as any unit in the Big Sky and it shows the way the ground game has been producing at 189 yards a game.

RUNNING BACKS: And speaking of ground game, NoDak back John Santiago leads the Big Sky in rushing yards — that’s right, even more than any of those Cal Poly runners — at 754.

He also has five 100-yard outings and has three times surpassed 150. And he’s just a freshman.

WIDE RECEIVERS/TE: The North Dakota passing attack is rather weak by comparison, Luke Stanley’s 16 catches for 212 yards leading the way. Montana’s Chase Naccarato got close to that in one game (13 vs. UC Davis) and Jamaal Jones could go off for 200 yards in just about any game.

DEFENSIVE LINE: The Griz may have finally gotten healthy across the line thanks to the bye week. Even with only partial service of the likes of Derek Crittenden, Zach Peevey and Nate Bradley, this is still an all-star unit.

LINEBACKERS: As close to a push as there is when comparing position groups. Montana has three returning starters and Kendrick Van Ackeren and Jeremiah Kose are each in the league’s top five in tackles per game. But UND has No. 3 on that list in MLB Will Ratelle and a pair of powerful sophomores to his left and right. You could write a textbook off these LBs. CB/SAFETY: North Dakota corner Deion Harris leads the Big Sky with 10 pass break ups and has a couple forced fumbles and an interception to pair ‘em with. The UND ball-hawk gets NoDak the edge in a matchup between two tough teams to pass against.

SPECIAL TEAMS: Need more John Santiago stats? The UND running back is also the top kick returner in the league, averaging 31.8 yards per return. Add that to his rushing numbers and he leads the Big Sky with 174 all-purpose yards a game.

INTANGIBLES: Saturday marks Montana’s fifth home game of the season, the most in the Big Sky thus far. And while Washington-Grizzly hasn’t exactly been the sanctuary of years past — the Griz have lost twice at home already — it’s a tough venue for any team to visit. UND has only one road win over a ranked opponent since joining Division I in 2008, coming three weeks ago at 16th-ranked Portland State.

AROUND THE BIG SKY ‌Portland State gets big home win over Montana State: Portland State running back David Jones rushed for a career-high 285 yards and three touchdowns, as the Vikings earned a home victory over nationally-ranked Montana State. Montana State quarterback Dakota Prukop scored 81 seconds into the game, and then Portland State responded with a 79-yard touchdown run by Jones to tie the score at 7-7 with 13:21 to go in the first quarter. While the two teams were tied at 14-14 going into the second quarter, Portland State went on a 21-7 run in the second quarter.

Vikings quarterback Alex Kuresa threw a touchdown, and then rushed for a touchdown to give Portland State a 35-21 halftime lead. Portland State finished with 682 yards, and Montana State finished with 440 yards. Montana State quarterback Dakota Prukop finished with three rushing touchdowns.      Weber State overcomes North Dakota late: Weber State’s mascot may be the Wildcats, but the football team may consider changing it to the “Cardiac Cats,� after this week. A week after beating Montana in overtime, Weber State came from behind to beat North Dakota, 25- 24, at Stewart Stadium in Ogden. North Dakota held a 24-10 lead with 14:53 left in the game, before Weber State scored 15 straight points to earn the win. It started with a Josh Kealamakia field goal from 43 yards. Then, Wildcats quarterback Jadrian Clark hit Tui Satuala on a 38-yard touchdown to trail 24-19. Then, as North Dakota quarterback Ryan Bartels was trying to evade a tackle on the following UND drive, Emmett Tela forced a Bartles fumble, which Weber recovered. The Wildcats responded with a game-winning score, as Cody Eyolfson caught a five-yard pass from Clark. Clark completed 21-of-35 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns.

North Dakota running back John Santiago rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown.     

Northern Colorado earns home win over UC Davis: Northern Colorado held a 42-3 lead at halftime, on the way to a big home win over UC Davis. Jacob Knipp ran for three touchdowns and threw for another, as the Bears held a 56-13 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Northern Colorado’s Brandon Cartagena rushed for three touchdowns, and finished with 112 yards.      Eastern Washington gets big road victory over Idaho State: Eastern Washington wide receiver Cooper Kupp had a record-breaking day, as the Eagles overcame an early deficit to earn a road win in Pocatello. Kupp finished the game with 14 catches for 161 yards and two touchdowns, breaking the Eastern Washington career catches record that was previously held by Eric Kimble, who finished his career with 253 catches.
