About the Brass Soloist

Carter Mitchell, euphonium

It is an honor to be selected as the soloist for this year’s brass choir performance at the Tacoma Junior Youth Symphony concert. I began my music career studying the euphonium in 5th grade, and the trombone in 6th grade. Through middle school and into high school I have performed euphonium for the concert and wind ensembles, and trombone in jazz ensemble. I have been a part of the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association since my freshman year of high school while performing classical trombone, as well as in recent years performing euphonium with the brass choir. I have a deep passion for creating music as it is a universal language which transcends the hearts of the audience, allowing us to share in a journey and connect emotionally with one another as a community. After graduating from high school, I will be attending Washington State University in Pullman, pursuing a double major in music performance and mechanical engineering. As high school graduation approaches, I look forward to where life and my music will take me in college. Please, enjoy the brass choir and Tacoma Junior Youth Symphony performance!

IN HONOR

About the Student Soloists

Leah Everling is 16 years old and currently a sophomore at Gig Harbor High School. She started studying the cello in 2nd grade and joined TYSA when she was in 3rd grade. At school, she plays French horn in the Wind Symphony, trumpet in jazz band, and mellophone in pep band. She has been a member of the Second City Young Chamber Players (YCP) program for 5 years and has won medals at the Seattle International Bach Competition and Virtuoso Competition. Her private teacher is Karen Hemming, her favorite cellist is Jacqueline du Pré, and favorite composers are Lalo, Schubert, and Rachmaninoff. Leah is a member of the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Racing Team where she races a sprint kayak and has competed at nationals for the past 2 years. Other favorite hobbies include skiing, making jewelry, cooking, and baking delicious desserts for her family and friends. In college, she plans to major in neuroscience and minor in music.

Violinist Lily Richards was born in Puyallup, Washington in 2008 to parents who first met in the Tacoma Youth Symphony in the early 1990s. Lily has played violin, viola, and piano since she was five. She is a student of Simon James, Chair of Strings at San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Lily has her sights set on a professional music career in the future. Outside of her music life she enjoys spending time with her family and close friends, is active in her church, adores playing with her dog Hank, and reading.

2022 2023 CONTRIBUTIONS: The Tacoma Youth Symphony Association is an independent nonprofit organization which is supported by the communities it serves. We are most grateful for the generosity of the following individuals, foundations, business firms and clubs who help ensure the continued artistic development of our youth.
