About the Student Soloists

Logan Tec is a 7th grader at Narrows View Intermediate in University Place, WA. He has been playing the violin since he was five years old and is an active member of the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association. He was Concertmaster of the Tacoma String Symphony and is currently the Principal Second Violin of the Tacoma String Philharmonic. In 2021, he was selected to receive the “Most Influential Player” award from the Tacoma String Symphony and in 2022, he was a winner of the Tacoma Youth Symphony Concerto Competition. He has also been awarded grants for his musical achievement from the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association, the Lift Music Foundation, and Our Military Kids.

Logan has played in several chamber groups including a string quartet and a trio. He recently performed with the University of Puget Sound’s faculty trio (The Puget Sound Trio) as part of the Orchestra Recital Series Fall Trio Festival.

Logan’s summer music study has taken him to Fairbanks, Alaska; Cancun, Mexico; San Diego, California; and Seattle, Washington. He currently studies violin with Dr. Maria Sampen at the University of Puget Sound.

In addition to playing violin, Logan is an avid runner. Last year, he was in the top 10 West Sound League Championship for cross country. When he is not practicing the violin or running, he likes to play with his Pembroke Welsh Corgi named Forte. His future goal is to become a professional violinist and to be known across the country as a musician.

Caleb Richards began taking violin lessons at the age of five, starting with the Suzuki method. At age eight, he joined TYSA and was placed in TSS. That was the impetus for his real love for music! After working through Suzuki Book Four, his teacher, Gwen Taylor, moved him out of the Suzuki books, and into more etudes and concerti. Along with the G minor Bruch Violin Concerto, he is working on Paganini Caprices, a Bach Fugue, and he is looking forward to learning the Paganini Violin Concerto.

In the future, as he finishes his last two years of middle school and moves on to high school, he is excited to continue with TYSA. Eventually, he hopes to either attend the United States Naval Academy (USNA) or become a professional violinist. Caleb would like to take this opportunity to express his gratitude to his family, the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association, and his teacher for all their kindness, encouragement, patience, and support. Thank you so much!

This concert has been sponsored by the Florence J. Kilworth Foundation and TacomaCreates. TWPis sponsored by Symphony Tacoma; TYVP is sponsored by Applebaum Violin Shop. Additional support of the Tacoma Youth Symphony Association is provided by the Washington State Arts Commission and Tacoma Creates. In the best interest of the performers and audience members, please no flash photography or video recording. Finally, please remember to silence all electronic devices.
