Wholegrain-richfoodsareanimportantpartofyourmenuintheChildandAdult CareFoodProgram(CACFP).Foodsthatarewholegrain-richarefilledwith vitamins,minerals,fiber,andothernutrientsthathelpkidsandadultsstayhealthy.

HowoftendoIhavetoservewholegrainsintheCACFP?

Eachday,atleastoneofthegraincomponentsofamealorsnackmustbe“whole grain-rich.”Wholegrain-richfooditemsmustbeofferedatleastonceperday,not oncepermeal/snack.IntheCACFP,wholegrain-richmeansthatatleasthalf thegrainingredientsinafoodarewholegrains,andanyremaininggrainsare enrichedgrains,bran,orgerm.ThisisrequiredforCACFPchildandadult mealpatternsonly.Thereisnowholegrain-richrequirementforinfants.

Ifyouservemealsandsnackstothesame groupofchildrenoradultsduringtheday:

Servewholegrain-richitemsforthegrain componentatoneofthemealsorsnackeachday.

FruitsarearequiredcomponentforreimbursablemealsintheNationalSchoolLunchProgram(NSLP),the SchoolBreakfastProgram(SBP),thePreschoolLunchMealPattern,andtheChildandAdultCareFood Program(CACFP)lunchandsuppermeals.However,thisrequirementcanalsobemetwithavegetable(with theexceptionofNSLP).Fruitsmaybeservedaspartofareimbursablemealtofulfillthecombinedfruitsand vegetablesrequirementforPreschoolandCACFPbreakfasts,aswellasintheSummerFoodServiceProgram (SFSP).Theymayalsobeservedasoneofthetworequiredmealcomponentsforareimbursablesnack inallChildNutritionPrograms.

FruitRequirements

•Fruitsmaybefresh,frozen,dried,canned(packedinwater,fruitjuice,orlightsyrup),and/or pasteurized,full-strength(100%)fruitjuice.ExamplesofcreditablefruitscanbefoundintheFood BuyingGuideforChildNutritionPrograms(FBG)athttps://foodbuyingguide.fns.usda.gov/.

•Theminimumcreditableservingsizeforfruitis1/8cup.Note:minimumcreditableamountsdo notapplytotheinfantmealpattern.

•Pureedfruitscreditasjuicewhenservedinasmoothie.

•Fruitscredittowardsamealbasedonthevolumeserved(exceptfordriedfruit).

VegetablesarearequiredcomponentforreimbursablemealsintheNationalSchoolLunchProgram(NSLP) includingthePreschoolLunchMealPattern,aswellastheChildandAdultCareFoodProgram(CACFP)lunch andsuppermeals.VegetablesmaybeservedaspartofareimbursablemealfortheSchoolBreakfastProgram (SBP),andtofulfillthecombinedfruitsandvegetablesrequirementforPreschoolandCACFPbreakfasts,as wellasintheSummerFoodServiceProgram(SFSP).Theymayalsobeservedasoneofthetworequiredmeal componentsforareimbursablesnackinallChildNutritionPrograms.

VegetableRequirements

•Vegetablesmustbefresh,frozen,canned,dried(includingdriedlegumes),or100%full-strength vegetablejuice.ExamplesofcreditablevegetablescanbefoundintheFoodBuyingGuidefor ChildNutritionPrograms(FBG)athttps://foodbuyingguide.fns.usda.gov/.
