Common Hazards & Controls (OIMS 5.1) Housekeeping and Work Area Expectations (OIMS 5.1) Fire / Emergency Preparedness  Escape routes, hallways, stairways, doorways, access ways and ladders shall be kept clear of material at all times.  Emergency equipment such as: fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, emergency showers, Scott Air Paks, and emergency personal protective equipment shall be inspected verifying that they are functioning, and accessible at all times.  Fire doors must be operable and not blocked open or obstructed in any way.  Oily rags shall be disposed of in identified metal cans (where provided) and not placed with other garbage.  Empty aerosol cans shall be disposed of in appropriate bins.  Paper or other potential flammable materials shall be kept away from heat sources.  All chemicals, cleaning agents and flammable products shall be properly stored in appropriate areas.  Areas under stairways shall not be used for storage.  When using designated smoking areas, employees shall use the ashtrays and waste cans provided. Storage  All stacked materials shall be stable with heavy items on the bottom.  Shelving / cabinets must be secured.  Materials shall be protected against weather conditions.  Elevated work and storage areas are to have appropriate protection / safeguards to prevent materials from falling to lower levels, or moving during windy conditions.  When disposing of garbage / material from an elevated work site workers shall lower material in approved baskets / containers or install chutes to containers below (do not throw / drop garbage or material from elevations).
